Baby boom

Sea turtle nesting season officially began May 1, and they’re not wasting any time. On May 4, the first nest was found on Longboat Key, dug by a loggerhead. Longboat Key Turtle Watch patrollers Tim Thurman, Heather Sellers and Bridgette Clark found the tracks and staked out the nest. Nearby areas including Siesta Key have gotten nests already, before turtle season officially started. As waters get warmer, more turtles will show up in greater numbers. More than 1,100 were tallied in 2020.

Longbeach Village is among the 40 stops in a free watershed tour of Manatee and Sarasota counties. In April, a plaque with instructions on accessing an audio presentation was placed just south of Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant. Resident Rusty Chinnis narrates how citizens came together to protect the Sister Keys. “You could say that the Sister Keys are the crown jewel in an excess of islands that grace Sarasota Bay,” he said. The program is funded by Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Florida Beverage Association.
