After a long intermission during the COVID-19 pandemic, Longboat Key resident Bob Trisolini returned to the stage to play Norman Rockwell at Mara Gallery.

The longtime Longboater’s stage homecoming was a role as painter Rockwell in the play “A Final Impossibility” by Logan Gabriel Schulman. Trisolini’s job was to communicate the struggle Rockwell has when he is commissioned by NASA to paint the moon landing.

The reading was one night only at the Mara Gallery, and Trisolini’s performance received a standing ovation.

Thanking five heroes The family of Longboat Key resident Joseph Zampino didn’t want too much time to pass without thanking a team of town firefighters.

Family members credited Brian Kolesa, Trey Bowlin, Chase Bullock, Tanner Broxson and Lt. Jose Rivera for acting swiftly and correctly when their dad was having breathing problems.

The family relayed word from a cardiologist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital that their actions were critical to their dad’s survival.

Tennis center league play set to resume in the fall The tennis center reopened in May 2020 and has provided a haven throughout the pandemic.

ertified racket technician Jay Morgan is appreciative the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center is set to resume its league play in the fall.

“I’m usually the last to know,” Morgan said.

The U.S. Professional Tennis Association member began stringing tennis rackets in 1969 while he still lived in North Dakota. Morgan said he is happy to have work and for the chance to share his dry humor with tennis center Manager Kay Thayer and the facility’s members.

“Kay works me like a rented mule,” Morgan joked.

Thayer, Morgan and the rest of the staff are preparing for a lot more traffic and business as league play and tournaments return in the fall at the tennis center for the first time since before the start of the COVID-19.

However, the tennis center has provided a haven for many people since it reopened in early May 2020 after closing for nearly two months.

“We’re happy that things are moving forward because that’s a big, big part of the tennis center is our league play here,” Thayer said.

“I mean, people love the league play. They love playing on teams and competing.”

Thayer said the camaraderie and social aspect of the tennis center are as important as the oncourt play.

“People love watching their friends play,” Thayer said. “They come out and support them, so it kind of brings all the members together like a family.”

Morgan said it’s been nice to see familiar faces.

“A man told me, ‘The tennis center is the best bargain on Longboat Key,’” Morgan said. “I told him, ‘You’re right.’”

Data provided by the town of Longboat Key showed that tennis center membership was down from 265 members in fiscal year 2020 to 239 in the current fiscal year.

Town Manager Tom Harmer put together a presentation for the Town Commission that showed the tennis center has collected $455,210 as of March 31. The town had budgeted for $684,860 to be collected in the first six months of fiscal year 2021 to account for memberships, walk-on plays, script cards, lessons and merchandise sales.

people coming to the island that are visiting on vacation — that group of people is really important for our business,” Thayer said.

Revenues in March 2021 are $22,000 lower compared to March 2020. To account for the lower revenues, the tennis center’s expenses are also down $33,800.

Member Fanny Younger captains a few different teams as part of the tennis center’s league play and said she’s looking forward to the fall.

“Whenever there’s evidence of returning to some sort of normal life, that’s to be celebrated,” Younger said. “We’ve been very fortunate to have the tennis center available to us for so long now in spite of the pandemic, but returning to league play is definitely part of our normal life.”

The tennis center is planning to hold its men’s Senior Clay Court Tournament from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5.

“We’ll have people from all over the country coming to play in that,” Thayer said.

The tennis center is the main site for the tournament. Other courts are typically used throughout the island, such as at the Longboat Key Club and Cedars Tennis Resort.

Thayer said the tennis center is still working out an exact date for January 2022’s Observer Challenge.

RECENT STORM HISTORY ■ TROPICAL STORM DEBBY JUNE 2012 Debby brought wind, rain and damage, marking Longboat Key’s first brush with a tropical storm in about six years.

■ BILL COUGHLIN Longboat Harbour commodore “I sent an email out reminding [residents], like, we mandate four dock lines, but we recommend six during hurricane season if you’re not here [to secure the boats]. I also remind them that you need to have a friend who will be looking after your boat. I mean, we do it, but that’s also part of their responsibility to have someone.”

■ TROPICAL STORM ISAAC AUGUST 2012 The storm shifted direction and made landfall in Louisiana.

Although the town lost some sand, it also swept away much of the seaweed that had washed ashore in the area.

■ TROPICAL STORM ANDREA JUNE 2013 Andrea brought heavy rains and 40 mph winds to Longboat Key. There was minor flooding in the Longbeach Village neighborhood.

■ HURRICANE HERMINE SEPTEMBER 2016 Longboat Key leaders said there were no reports of homes flooding despite absorbing at least 16 inches of rain during a two-day span. The town did lose some sand as part of its $5 million beach renourishment job at New Pass.

■ HURRICANE IRMA SEPTEMBER 2017 Longboat Key leaders issued a mandatory evacuation for residents ahead of Irma, part of a record 6.5 million ordered to seek shelter. There was uncertainty with predictions that Irma could cause crippling damage as a Category 4 storm. However, Irma made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Marco Island. As it approached the SarasotaBradenton area around 11 p.m. Sept. 10, its intensity weakened to a Category 2 hurricane.

■ HURRICANE ETA NOVEMBER 2020 Eta’s storm surge and heavy rains brought floodwaters Nov. 11, 2020, to many north-end Longboat Key residents.

Many residents said the damage from Eta was worse than Irma, even though Irma was a more severe storm. Firefighters ended up helping fewer than a dozen people out of their homes and find shelter at a Manatee County facility. Neighbors also spoke of watching the water rise, powerless to do anything about it.

s beach work proceeds along Longboat Key’s shoreline, residents and town leaders are preparing for another hurricane season, this time with more sand in many stretches than in 2020.

The six-month season kicks off June 1 with independent long-range forecasts predicting an above-average year for Atlantic basin storms and hurricanes.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is expected to issue its first official season outlook this week.

Fire Chief Paul Dezzi led a discussion last week about hurricane preparations and what’s different in 2021. In 2020, COVID-19 concerns prompted emergency managers in Sarasota and Manatee counties to set aside more square footage per person than in years past, 40 square feet in Sarasota’s 11 shelters and 60 in Manatee’s 24 shelters. Capacity was down from previous seasons, when 20 square feet was the norm.

This year, with thousands of residents vaccinated, the capacities have returned to normal.

On the beaches, more than a million cubic yards of sand will have been deposited by the end of the summer, widening the shoreline townwide.

BULKING UP THE BEACHES

Since 1993, the town has added 7.7 million cubic yards of sand on its beaches. Beach Project Manager Charlie Mopps said that the figure will be closer to 9 million after its current projects are finished. The plan is to be completed

by August, but that’s based on optimal conditions.

“Beach projects are always subject to Mother Nature,” Mopps said. “That’s why when you look at our schedule, … it always says, … ‘This schedule is subject to change due to unforeseen things,’ and that happens to be weather in our case.”

Part of the design of the beachrenourishment work was to keep upland homes, businesses and streets safer in a storm, Town Manager Tom Harmer said.

Hurricane Eta in 2020 brought coastal flooding and storm surge effects to the island.

About a quarter-million cubic yards of sand were lost, though experts are adamant that such wash-aways don’t often result in permanent losses.

Hurricane Irma, in 2017, was a more intense storm but with less local damage.

“That’s why it’s important for us to have what we call engineered beaches that have a certain amount of protection and dunes because you just never know,” Harmer said.

Dredging companies are prepared to secure their vessels and equipment in case a storm or hurricane passes near Longboat Key, Harmer said, but each case and each storm is different.

“Hurricane Irma was a wind

event. We were fortunate it never reached hurricane-level winds in Sarasota County,” Harmer said. “Even though we had a lot of damage and power lines down and roof damage, it kind of goes to show you that, that was not that powerful of a storm for us, but you could start to see the damage that could occur.

“Whereas Hurricane Eta was completely different. It was much more of a flooding [and] water event.”

FUTURE ZOOM MEETING

At 3 p.m. June 24, the town is planning to hold another virtual hurricane preparation meeting with Dezzi, Harmer, Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino, the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, Manatee County Emergency Management Chief Steve Litschauer, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane and ABC-7 Chief Meteorologist Bob Harrigan.

Chamber of Commerce President Gail Loefgren said holding the meeting virtually allows people who have left their homes for the summer season to participate, unlike the group’s live events, last held in 2019. She said the chamber expanded its audience last year because it was a virtual event.

“I think it’s a good lesson maybe even for the future,” Loefgren said. “Once we get COVID totally under control, and we all have our vaccinations, we even could do — like next year — a virtual and an in-person [event]. We could do a hybrid, but I think keeping the virtual part would be really important.”

Here’s the other thing that I think is important: We take the patio furniture, which can become a weapon either [at] your own house or for people around you, and we secure that.”

Beach entrance could get a new look after work North-end residents asking for improvements to the gateway to the shore on North Shore Road.

Longboat Key residents advocating for a more attractive gateway to the town’s popular beach on the north end of the island could soon see their wish granted.

Longboat Key’s Public Works staff is planning to replace chain-link fencing at the end of 100 North Shore Road when the current north-end beach renourishment projects are finished, according to an email from Town Manager Tom Harmer.

“The other area where the fencing exists along the north side to the [360 North] condo properties will be evaluated after the overall townwide beach nourishment project is complete,” Harmer wrote.

Rock groin construction on the north end of Longboat Key is underway and set to continue into late August as a means of protecting the beach from persistent erosion.

Potential improvements to the North Shore entrance would come afterward.

The push comes after the Longboat Key North community group ran a beach volunteer pilot program from February through April.

“The chain link fence, I guess, went up the last time they did a beach nourishment, and then it just never came down,” volunteer group organizer Cyndi Seamon said.

“It does help keep the dunes and the sand off the road, which apparently they clean off every week.”

Commissioner Maureen Merrigan, who is also a beach volunteer, has advocated for improvements to the North Shore entrance.

“We’ve got beach volunteers that are communicating that we care about the beaches, and we have a beach entrance that’s communicating the opposite,” Merrigan said of the existing sight.

Seamon said an improved North Shore entrance is an important first impression for beachgoers.

“This is a really important place, and we want to keep it beautiful, so in order to do that, there’s something that needs to

get done,” Seamon said.

Seamon said the volunteer group walked 215 hours, patrolling the shoreline dressed in highvisibility vests. The volunteers answered questions about the beach and helped pick up trash.

“If we don’t care what [the beach] looks like, then [beachgoers] don’t care about how they leave it,” Seamon said.

Although the volunteer group is independent of the town, Merrigan said having an extra set of eyes and ears on the north end

helped from a safety standpoint.

Town police regularly patrol the area, often on foot.

“The beaches were cleaner as a result, and we were able to give some leads to police that allowed them to go out and address issues that they might not have been aware of,” Merrigan said.

Volunteers also helped answer questions beachgoers might have, such as where they’re allowed to bring their dogs in the nearby area and where the nearest public restroom is located.

Seamon said the group plans to meet again with Longboat Key leaders in the coming weeks to further refine the beach entrance proposal.

Before the volunteer program launched, the group met with Harmer, Public Works Director Isaac Brownman, then-Police Chief Kelli Smith and Support Services Director Carolyn Brown.

After meeting with town leaders, the group will determine how and when to operate its next beach volunteer program.

Longboat Key leaders have received an application for a property in Longbeach Village that would redevelop a six-unit apartment building at the corner of Broadway Street and Longboat Drive North into four single-family units.

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons said the application for 551 Broadway St. is the town’s first to seek approval under the Conformance Overlay Redevelopment District process, allowing developers to remake properties that once met density standards but were rendered nonconforming when the town lowered density for properties in 1984. Property records show the property, on 0.14 acres, was built in 1946, with a renovation in 1981.

Changes made by the town in the past two years now offer some flexibility for developers to rebuild properties to match up better with modern tastes and the marketplace.

Property records show Michael Kimball purchased the land at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive from Mote Scientific Foundation.

Kimball paid $1.5 million for the 1.87 acres of vacant commercial land.

In March 2019, Longboat Key voters approved a density change for the property. If the property is rezoned to residential, then a maximum of four residential units an acre, or a maximum of seven units for the entire site, would be allowed.

Mote Scientific Foundation is separate from Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. The nonprofit’s mission is the advancement of oceanography and marine research on Florida’s west coast, along with supporting local social organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Parsons said. “The town would allow the properties that were rebuilding only to build back to the exact same extent as to what they had before.”

Parsons outlined three options for nonconforming density properties, which are properties that have units per acre greater than what the current zoning code allows: ■ Build the property back to the specifications that had previously existed; ■ Keep the nonconforming density but redevelop according to

the zoning district standards; or ■ A CORD application.

“CORD allows someone to retain the nonconforming density and then redevelop the property, but they may not be able to meet all of the underlying zoning district standards,” Parsons said.

“In that kind of case, someone can present a plan that is showing improvement in the various nonconformities.”

Town Manager Tom Harmer explained how the Town Commission approved the CORD process a few years ago after years of discussion.

“It’s a way to recognize some of the grandfathered properties on the island but still allow them to redevelop in some form or fashion,” Harmer said.

Following the 1984 move to generally reduce density across the island, more than 100 properties remain nonconforming.

Parsons said he anticipates the Planning and Zoning Board will consider the proposed changes to 551 Broadway St. in September.

Parsons said the proposed development entails a futureland use map amendment, rezoning and a site development plan.

“At the end of the process, assuming the Town Commission approves the development there, that property will no longer be considered nonconforming for density,” Parsons said. “It’ll actually have a designation of being conforming for density.”

Records show Sarasota-based Cypress Cash LLC owns the property at 551 Broadway St.

Longboat Key Town Manager Tom Harmer and Mayor Ken Schneier earned recognition last week for advocating on behalf of the town during the Florida legislative session.

“I think it’s a team effort,” Harmer said. “The whole legislative session is so active with bills being proposed, being amended, moving forward, not moving forward, and so it takes a lot of eyes and ears on it.”

Harmer received his award in person. Schneier was out of town.

Other area leaders who won the award include Sarasota City Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch, Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy, Anna Maria City Commissioner Carol Carter, Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie, Holmes Beach Commission Chair Jim Kihm, North Port Mayor Jill Luke and North Port Commissioner Debbie McDowell.

“[For the Home Rule Hero Award], we ask people to get involved in the legislative process,” League of Cities Field Advocacy Director Scott Dudley said. “We ask them to stay in touch with their legislators, make phone calls, do all that. And then [there are] some folks that go way above and beyond.”

Dudley provided an update on the end of the Florida legislative session, mentioning: ■ How Senate Bill 522 died, which would have given the state sole authority over short-term rentals properties; ■ The possibility of House Bill 403 taking effect July 1. The bill would prohibit local governments from taking actions relating to the licensure and regulation of homebased businesses; and ■ Money that local governments could see as part of the federal American Rescue Plan. The town of Longboat Key is still reviewing the guidance from the U.S. Department of Treasury as to how much money it could receive and how soon it could receive the funds.

“On Longboat Key, I think it’s all about quality of life, and how do we maintain the quality of life on the island?” Harmer said.

“The home-based business one is a concern for us. The short-term rentals have been a concern every year.”

A gemstone for St. Armands Let the conversation begin, but perhaps this time, the ending will be happier than previous trips down this road.

e’ve seen this movie so many times. It belongs on Turner Classics.

Sometimes the ending changes, but up to the end, it’s always another version of “Groundhog Day.” You know how it goes: The opening scene is a peaceful, charming community, much like Garrison Keillor’s fictional town where everyone is above average and happy.

Then along comes, ugh, the developer. He wants to build on a vacant lot. And then all hell breaks loose.

What? More traffic? More noise? Block my view? No, no, no!

Our lives will be ruined! You can’t do that!

So here we go again. Groundhog Day on St. Armands Circle.

We knew the Roman candle would be ignited and spit out its first fireball as soon as we read in the May 6 Sarasota Observer that Gavin Meshad; his father, John; and Dennis McGillicuddy

wanted to begin discussions about a development idea for the asphalt public parking lot behind the Met, Alvin’s and the Crab & Fin on the southeast quadrant of St. Armands Circle.

And right on cue, it did.

Emails sizzled across the Ringling Bridge in the ether from St. Armands Key residents to Sarasota City commissioners, expressing concerns (in reality, opposition) to developing the parking lot.

They continued Monday night with nine speakers, including Longboat Key Mayor Ken Schneier and residents who live near or across the street from the parking lot.

There were no ad-lib departures from the script. The speak-

ers predicted the doom of more traffic, noise, trash and delivery trucks; too much density of people; and shadows of darkness from a 45-foot-high building.

But before you take any sides, we urge you to go online and watch the presentation of the Meshads and McGillicuddy (see the link in the box). “What we’re here for today,” John Meshad told commissioners, “is simply to start the game with a serve and see what the community response is. We don’t want to be contentious. We’re not trying to force this on anybody. We just think the Circle is not what it used to be. We think it needs a facelift and some injections of steroids.” (He’s right.)

Meshad went on to describe

the trio’s concept. They emphasized that’s all it is — a concept at this point: a 98-room, boutique hotel; a Morton’s Market (they have a letter of intent with Morton’s); six town homes; public restrooms; and a 270-car parking garage.

For anyone who doesn’t live next to the lot, what they presented indeed would add a badly needed gemstone to the Circle.

But like any proposed development in Sarasota, it’s a long, arduous, costly, contentious road to reality. We credit the bravery and vision of the Meshads and McGillicuddy.

Let the conversation and process begin.

Footnote: There is always an easy answer to these development proposals. If the neighbors don’t want that property developed, they can stop any development forever: Buy the property themselves.

Town’s role for EVs: Create the framework Longboat Key Town Commissioner Debra Williams suggested last month at the commission’s Goals & Objectives session that the town consider building infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles.

Whoa, there.

Everyone, of course, sees the increasing numbers of Teslas cruising up and down Gulf of Mexico Drive and everywhere else. What’s more, the world’s auto manufacturers all are making big bets on the future manufacture and sale of electric vehicles. They’re coming fast.

But with any disruptive innovation, positive and negative consequences and challenges are part of the trend.

In the case of electric cars, two of the more immediate challenges are charging stations and the electric vehicles’ effects on gas taxes.

CHARGING STATIONS

Like most things, as much as our elected officials feel the urge that government needs to inject itself in this emerging technology in a big way, they should resist the temptation to be in the charging station business, e.g., the building and installation of charging stations. For more than a century, the private sector has handled the production and distribution of gasoline for automobiles just fine. Left alone, it will accomplish the same for electric vehicles.

If governments are to be involved, their roles should be to create the frameworks to allow this industry to flourish as the market dictates. In the case of Longboat Key, for instance, town zoning officials can be researching and crafting proposed zoning

codes on where charging stations can be allowed. The Mobil station on the south end of the Key is an obvious location. But what about, say, in the parking lots of Harry’s Continental Kitchens or Ace Hardware — if their owners so desire? Or the Publix parking lot? Should residents be allowed to erect charging stations in the side yards next to their driveways?

Likewise, if the town itself decides to install charging stations at its public buildings, such as Town Hall, surely those stations would be equipped to charge the users a fee for the electricity used. They shouldn’t be free to the users.

And while we’re on the subject of charging stations in government parking lots or in municipally owned parking garages, what’s the deal with giving the electric vehicles the best parking slots? Why are electric

vehicle owners more privileged than gas-powered car owners?

Although electric vehicles might not spew gas fumes, as the sidebar below points out, they “are anything but clean.”

It’s forward-thinking for the town to address this growing trend. But let’s hope those who do keep these principles in mind: The less government involvement, the better; create a fair framework; and remember: Free enterprise is almost always smarter, more efficient and innovative than government fulfilling a need.

FREE USE OF ROADS

Another growing challenge for all levels of government with electric vehicles is the decline in gas taxes.

As electric vehicles proliferate, gasoline consumption will fall, and so will the gas-tax revenues used to maintain America’s

streets and highways.

But in addition to that effect, here is one of the comments you often hear about electric vehicle and gas taxes: Electric vehicle owners are using streets and highways for free because they are not paying for gas; gas-powered car owners are subsidizing electric vehicle owners.

State lawmakers are becoming increasingly aware of this, and throughout the country pilot programs are underway to test what are called mileagebased user fees. Such fees charge motorists for the miles they drive rather than the amount of gasoline they use.

That makes sense. It’s akin to paying for the amount of electricity or water you consume in your home.

But there are two main concerns about MBUFs: n That governments would just add these user fees on top of gas taxes. Many MBUF proponents say such fees should replace gas taxes, not be imposed in tandem. n The other concern is privacy.

No one wants his or her mileage usage to be public information or in the hands of the government.

Oregon has been testing MBUFs and has developed different methods for motorists’ driving data to be collected and stored privately. But we all know this: Whatever information is transformed into digital data is vulnerable to hacking.

Altogether, as policymakers begin to address the consequences of electric vehicles, their overriding charges are: 1) stay out of the way of private enterprise as much as possible; and 2) avoid subsidizing one group at the expense of another.

LETTERS Totalitarian crazies will lose again Great editorial on totalitarianism.

As a political science (government) college student in the mid-1960s, I saw everything covered in your editorial and in James Lombard’s government classes at Harvard.

The points the editorial makes reflect the modern American version of the totalitarian movement, not with the point of a gun as in the past, but a constant barrage of propaganda, repetitive condemnation and speaking great lies about the great country of America.

It’s like watching “The Manchurian Candidate,” starring Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Harvey, where the incessant brainwashing of captured American prisoners by the North Korean enemy results in them turning against each other and against their country.

I doubt many Americans have ever met any former residents of communist countries. The stories they tell will scare the hell out of any aspirant to totalitarianism unless they aspire to be a member of the ruling class — and yes, there is a ruling class in totalitarian countries past and present.

After World War II, my family and many others helped displaced people relocate to the U.S. We heard the stories. They were fleeing en masse from the newly formed communist Eastern European countries and witnessed firsthand what it was like then and imagined what it would become years hence.

I heard stories from my two Russian professors during four years of college classes and afterward from the many Chinese teachers I had while studying Chinese at the Defense Language Institute. All were natives of their respective countries and fled the nightmares they were living through.

Marxism sounds ever so friendly, but in practice it becomes deadly as witnessed by 70 years of Soviet Union government viciousness — destroy the family unit, forbid religious practice, encourage friends and relatives to report anticommunist behavior and expression to the authorities, and more.

Does this sound familiar to what is happening today?

Thought control results in behavior control. Constant repetition makes lies become truth.

This is not my America nor that for countless others. The U.S. is the wealthiest, most powerful, most generous and still the freest country in the world and has been the savior of the free world through two great wars. But the ignorance and self-guilt being perpetrated are destructive to the core of American society.

Who could have imagined that after centuries America would be debased by violent mobs aided and abetted by government authorities and the press? To be brainwashed by lowly idiots who want to destroy our self-respect and pride and not fight back is despicable. Our founding fathers fought the good war to make real the idea of America as a free country.

The 1960s and 1970s were a precursor to the chaos happening now. The crazies lost. And they will lose again.

I had a bad fall March 15 and later another illness that kept me hospitalized for a month.

This resulted in not watching television (I still don’t!) and not reading newspapers. Hopefully, my blood pressure has improved somewhat with not witnessing the political scene.

I heartily endorse “This is not the country that I knew and loved.”

Our family legally immigrated to the U.S. by choice, not birth.

We became U.S. citizens willingly, but it is not the country that it was even 20 years ago, despite changes in political leaders and parties.

Frankly, I am afraid for my adult children and grandchildren with the direction in which the U.S. is heading: It’s totalitarianism — by any other word or phrase.

Sarasota entertains St. Armands hotel plans Despite concern from Longboat Key officials, the Sarasota City Commission is considering a mixed-use project for the public lot.

here’s a long way to go before a proposed mixed-use complex anchored by a hotel and grocery store could possibly be built on St. Armands Circle, but the concept cleared its first hurdle at Monday’s meeting of the Sarasota City Commission.

The development team of John Meshad, Gavin Meshad and Dennis McGillicuddy presented their vision for a project on the site of the Fillmore Drive parking lot adjacent to the Circle. The concept plan includes a 98-room hotel, a 15,000-square-foot Morton’s grocery store, six town homes and 270 covered public parking spaces.

A majority of the commission expressed an interest in exploring the proposal further. In a 4-1 vote, the board directed the city manager and city attorney to work with the development team to clearly outline what steps would need to be taken for the project to

eventually become reality.

Commissioners made clear their vote was not an endorsement of the concept.

“This is very preliminary,” Commissioner Kyle Battie said.

“Extremely preliminary.”

Already, the concept has triggered concern from some Longboat Key officials and St. Armands residents. On Saturday, Longboat Town Manager Tom Harmer sent an email to Sarasota City Manager Marlon Brown about the proposal.

“The town is very interested in understanding the proposal and the ability to provide input to the City Commission regarding potential project impacts that may impact Longboat Key,” Harmer wrote.

Longboat Mayor Ken Schneier appeared at Monday’s meeting to expand on the town’s desire to mitigate any potential traffic issues associated with a St. Armands development.

“It’s a tremendous concern on Longboat Key,” Schneier said.

Residents raised questions about how a development might affect traffic, noise and other quality-of-life dynamics in the area. Commissioners encouraged the development team to meet with neighbors in an effort to address those concerns before the project gets any further consideration from the city, which the group pledged to do.

Paradise Center completes renovation NAT KAEMMERER STAFF WRITER

t’s been almost a year to the day that all The Paradise Center’s classes were moved outdoors because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes entirely stopped in March, and then May 17 was the day that Executive Director Suzy Brenner got the go-ahead from her board to hold classes outside.

Since then, every class has been in the center’s parking lot.

But on May 13, Zumba and Pilates were held indoors for the first time since then, thanks to the completion of The Paradise Center’s large recreation room. Students didn’t know they would be indoors because Brenner wasn’t sure if the room would be ready for

classes this week, but the change of scenery (and the lack of heat) was welcome. Brenner noted she was almost chilly indoors after so long exercising in the humidity.

“I can wear my Zumba shoes now, and my mat won’t get so dirty,” Sandi Love said.

The completion of the room, which will be used for exercise classes, movies, mahjong and more events, marks the end of the renovation of the building, which holds The Paradise Center and a set of medical suites. The Paradise Center has been operating out of the building since late 2019. Construction on the room started only four weeks ago, and the crew is just putting the finishing touches on everything.

“This was the final piece,” Brenner said. “The whole building has been renovated now and is all in use. The only vacancy is we still have a couple slots open in the medical suite.”

The first class filled the room almost to capacity with a dozen students. Brenner’s dog, Lahni,

who is the unofficial mascot of The Paradise Center, roamed the room and checked on students during class. Brenner is surprised at the still-high number of students this late in the season and said that if it continues, they might have to take some classes outside again or take reservations.

“It’s a good problem to have,” Brenner said.

Love is a frequent student of The Paradise Center’s classes and also teaches qi gong every week.

Many of her students still want to be outdoors if the weather is nice, but she appreciates the choice to come indoors. The room, painted blue and beige, is airy and calming, and Love said she is excited to teach class there soon. Qi gong ends with a meditation that’s normally done lying down, but because the pavement is uncomfortable, Love has been doing standing meditations.

“Now we can do Shavasana on the ground,” Love said. “The meditation at the end will be more relaxing for everybody.”

Town adjusts COVID-19 policies Mask rules for town facilities change, temperature checks no longer mandatory.

Like all local governments throughout Florida, the town of Longboat Key can no longer issue coronavirus-related orders or restrictions.

On May 3, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 2021102. It suspends all remaining local government mandates and restrictions based on the COVID-19 state of emergency.

The town continues to follow and support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for how to deal with COVID-19.

“On Thursday, the CDC issued updated guidance that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in most settings — both indoor and outdoor,” Town Manager Tom Harmer wrote in an email to commissioners. “The governor’s executive order also prohibits restrictions based on whether or not an individual has received the vaccine.

“Based on the executive order, the latest CDC guidance and the latest vaccine statistics on the island, the town has updated its recommendations and practices to be consistent with the governor’s order and the CDC.”

The town plans to put up signs outside municipal buildings that read: “The town of Longboat Key follows current CDC guidance related to COVID-19. For nonvaccinated visitors, masks are strongly encouraged in town facilities. We respect individuals’ personal choice to wear a mask as an enhanced protective measure.”

The CDC considers people fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving their second vaccines or from the date of their one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

More than 95% of Longboat Key’s residents are vaccinated, Harmer said.

As of Monday, May 17, the town is suspending visitor screenings at all of its facilities.

Temperature screenings at Town Hall and the Planning, Zoning and Building Department will remain but are optional for visitor use.

Masks are still available at all town facilities for visitors who request them. The town’s mask policy had been set to expire later this month.

The town is encouraging the public to conduct business with town staff virtually by email, phone or website. Meetings with the public can be scheduled in person if necessary.

Public meetings of the Town Commission and advisory boards will continue to be held in the Commission Chambers. The meetings are open to the public subject to space requirements.

Save Our Seabirds CEO retiring in August NAT KAEMMERER STAFF WRITER

he search has begun to replace Save Our Seabirds CEO David Pilston, who plans to retire and leave the position at the end of August.

Pilston has been the CEO since 2012.

Pilston took over an organization with deteriorating facilities.

He has helped make the center at 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway a high-functioning seabird rehabilitation and release station that rescues about 5,000 birds a year.

During his tenure, revenues have tripled, board Chair Jim Curtis said in a news release.

“We’ve got a good team in place, and we’ve come a long way in nine years,” Pilston said. “We’re financially stable now, the facilities are dramatically improved, and we have the capital campaign in place. When I joined in 2012, the treasurer of the board told me she thought the place had five months to live. We’ve been in the black every year since then.”

zation’s capital campaign, “Come Fly With Us,” that launched in 2019. The goal is to raise money for a renovated entry building, education center and rehabilitation facilities.

Although it has been put on pause because of the pandemic, it will be relaunched in the fall, Pilston said.

“Most of our supporters are up north now, so we’ll wait until everybody is back in town, but I’ll still be in touch,” Pilston said.

In late 2020, the organization

hired its first full-time veterinarian, Dr. Maria Passarelli, which has allowed Save Our Seabirds to become a fully functioning avian hospital. In the past, birds with more serious ailments had to be transferred to another facility.

“We are now considered by FWC to be the model facility of our kind in the state of Florida,” Pilston said. “I’m really proud of our team. We have a great group of people that are really smart and engaged and committed.”

Pilston will retire and move to Europe with his wife, according to a news release. He had been thinking of retiring in the next couple years but saw the pandemic as a good inflection point to make the move.

“I think it’s a really good time as we reopen and relaunch,” Pilston said. “I think it’s a good time to pass the baton.”

Save Our Seabirds is looking for a replacement with five years of nonprofit management experience, as well as five years of fundraising and marketing experience, according to the job posting on MBJGroup.com.

hat do Stephen King and All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church have in common?

For now, art from local painter JoJo Fusco hangs on their walls. Fusco is an oil painter who alternates between abstract and figurative styles, and for the rest of May, she’s the featured artist at the Longboat Key church.

Fusco cites King among her inspirations, so to have her piece “Annexed Wilderness” purchased by him was exciting.

“It’s a big abstract piece with a splash of white right in it,” Fusco said. “I called it ‘Annexed Wilderness,’ which means that humans have taken over the wilderness, so they can survive. I just get inspired by my surroundings and nature, and then I go from there.”

In the church’s gallery, Fusco has a mix of abstract paintings alongside scenes. The abstract ones are an eye-catching canvas full of thick paint that stands off the surface, with alluring names

including “Dancing Blue Moon over Myakka” and “Raging Fire.”

“I’m very interested in any kind of art,” Fusco said. “I kind of go by seasons and what people like or need or how I’m feeling or what kind of materials I have. I’m spontaneous when it comes to my art. I just wake up and try to express what I’m seeing that day.”

Like many artists, the creative gene has been active in Fusco since childhood, when she drew all the time — even on the walls.

She studied all kinds of art at

Dominion University and is also a photographer.

“I’ve been focusing on art because art is, I think, my forte,” Fusco said. “It puts me in my element and puts me in a world where I can just be creative, and the sky’s the limit.”

All Angels gallery director and church member Carol Doenecke recruited Fusco to the gallery because they had met through the local chapter of the National League of American Pen Women.

Doenecke was one of the board members who accepted Fusco’s application.

She and her family moved to Sarasota four years ago after picking the place out on a map and was delighted to find a thriving arts scene. She’s been in a dozen local art shows and started her own gallery business.

“Nature here inspires me to paint,” Fusco said. “Everything is so beautiful. I just became a person that likes to wake up in the morning and just jump into life and express myself through my art or photography.”

Lessons from a caregiver Caring for another is a trying task. Here are five tips learned from going through the process firsthand.

t its very core, caregiving is the embodiment of love and commitment to others.

If the past 15 months have demonstrated anything, it’s that we are all very human — vulnerable, fragile, prone to be frightened individuals who will need some element of care during our lifetimes.

Caregiving can range from assisting someone who is recovering from an illness that leaves them flat on their back to joining someone in the long road of a terminal illness. It often involves a spectrum of tasks spanning the occasional trip to the grocery store, lending a hand with laundry and grabbing the mail to helping transfer from bed to bath, ensuring medicines

are taken or even given, and holding hands while listening to memories of a life filled with blessings and regrets.

A PERSONAL JOURNEY

It has been a decade since I assumed care for my stepfather, who had been a loving presence in my life for 40 years.

He had been treated for prostate cancer eight years earlier and pronounced cancer-free; however, it had poked its ugly head up again, this time requiring the removal of his bladder.

My mother and he, both approaching their 80s, took this in stride, and he was again pronounced cancer-free. A few short years later, my mother had a brain aneurism and was dead within a few days.

My stepfather missed her terribly but resumed his normal activities with church and socializing with friends. But within six months he was hospitalized with a urinary track infection that ultimately was diagnosed as cancer.

Upon discharge from the hospital to a rehab facility, he was quite unhappy. I continued to ferry him to medical appointments, sorting out the orders and prescriptions. Following one appointment for a PET scan, we returned to his facility. He refused to leave the car. I tried reasoning with him, then cajoling him and finally realized this was the beginning of a whole new chapter.

My learnings?

Develop a plan. I had a pretty good sense of what his diagnosis might entail for care, but that quickly changed when the following week he decided he did not want to aggressively treat the cancer but preferred palliative care.

That shifted the care plan from me providing oversight for his meals and medications with the assistance of a parttime professional caregiver to reassessing his emotional, psychological and physical needs and figuring out a plan to meet those.

Reality check. I came to grips that change is one of the few certainties of caregiving. I learned that my master plan required re-evaluating our situation on a daily basis.

Turn to the experts. His decision for palliative care caused his dismissal from his original oncologist. I needed to find another one to assist me and ultimately refer us for hospice and palliative care.

And although I assumed what his life span might be, the palliative/hospice doctor who made a home visit shortened that span considerably.

Although that was heartbreaking, it did spur me on to look for more and different home health care.

This is not a solo act. You must involve the care receiver.

My initial tendency was to be very bossy, acting like I knew best. I ultimately recognized that behavior was spurred by

my fears, latent grief and, yes, a certain amount of anger.

Bottom line: Respond to the person, not the illness. This was an intelligent and highly accomplished adult, and I was treating him like a child.

Be honest. It doesn’t matter whether the recovery might spoil a long anticipated travel plan, breaking the news that you have to take away the keys to the car or the need to put someone in a long-term care facility, shading the truth is disrespectful. It’s better to get all the cards on the table and then deal with the emotions surrounding the situation.

In our case, that meant dropping the platitudes and focusing on what was important to him. Who did he want to see? What foods did he love?

Did he feel insecure staying alone at night? Where were the important papers? These discussions gave him a sense of comfort.

BUT WHAT ABOUT ME?

I would be violating my fifth step — honestly — if I told you care giving is easy. This is stressful stuff.

In a National Alliance of Caregiving study, 38% of the responders found it highly stressful. Another study found that 40%-70% of caregivers had significant symptoms of depression.

So how do you prevent being one of those statistics? There are many resources available to give you practical ideas for lessening the burdens. The greatest lesson I learned was to accept people’s offer to help.

Have a list of tasks needed to be done. Keep repeating to yourself: People do not offer to help unless they mean it.

CARED FOR, URGENTLY 1:03 p.m., 300 block of Shore Road Traffic: A woman who had been struck by a vehicle in a church parking lot called police following her return home, but only after being taken to an urgent care clinic by the person driving the vehicle. The victim and the driver both told police the victim was adamant about not calling first responders even though her ankle was likely broken. Once home, though, she was urged to follow up with police. The driver, contacted later by police, confirmed the victim’s version of events.

The driver was advised of the dangers of that course of action and was issued a citation for careless driving.

TRACKING THE TUNES 3:22 p.m., near Longboat Drive East Noise: Residents complained of loud music coming from boats moored nearby. Officers who responded reported hearing music and requested assistance from a Manatee County marine unit because no town marine unit was available. The Manatee unit reported it was unable to locate the source of the loud music. Another call was received 40 minutes later with a similar complaint.

After struggling with complications related to Vascular Parkinsonism, she is now at peace in Heaven. The youngest of eight, Lucia was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 7, 1936 to Raphael and Casper Marrazzo.

Lucia and Mark were high school sweethearts, marrying on September 7, 1957, three years after graduating from Nutley High School. Together they raised three children at their home in Clifton, NJ. Lucia worked as a bookkeeper until she and Mark retired in 1992, and moved permanently to Longboat Key, Florida in 1999. She loved the Gulf coast - it was her paradise - as well as enjoying long walks on the beach, outings on their boat, traveling to exotic places near and far by land or sea, exercising in the pool and playing cards or Rummikub with her friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a loyal and devoted friend.

Lucia is survived by her husband Mark and three children, Debra McNerney, Mark Longo and his wife Sharon, Karen Longo and her husband John Harrison, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and a loyal and devoted friend.

‘Pipeline’ lands emotional punch Dominique Morisseau’s searing play isn’t lost in translation to streaming video in WBTT production.

ominique Morisseau’s “Pipeline” is timely. (It’s a shame, but it’s a fact.)

The “Pipeline” of the play’s title refers to the school-to-prison “pipeline” for Black teenagers. For Black youth, an outburst of adolescent anger can be a “Go Directly to Jail” card in the Monopoly game of life.

Nya (Renata Eastlick) knows this pipeline all too well. She’s a recently divorced single mother who teaches in a public high school in the inner city.

She sees outbursts of violence every day — and knows that a few seconds of rage can translate to a life behind bars. To spare her son, Omari (Donovan Whitney), this fate, Nya and her ex-husband, Xavier (Joel P.E. King), sent him to a private boarding school.

But Omari has a temper — and just slammed a white teacher into a smartboard over a perceived racist slur. It’s Omari’s third strike. At best, the school will expel him. At worst, he’s on the prison pipeline. As the play opens, Nya’s circling the vortex of a panic attack after hearing this bad news. When Omari runs away, she gets pulled in.

rior reality. Patrick Russini’s soundscape, Jay Poppe’s video projections, and Alex Pinchin and Joseph Oshry’s lighting pull you into the characters’ interior lives. Their alchemy transmutes their stream of consciousness to sight and sound.

Now let’s get back to the playwright. She defies expectations, and I want to make sure you don’t have any before experiencing her work.

Morisseau is a master of language. Her play delivers several hypnotic soliloquies — disguised as long cellphone messages or angry monologues. Words matter in her play, and she frames the action as a counterpoint between two works of literature: Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem “We Real Cool” and Richard Wright’s novel “Native Son.” The poem is an incantatory ode to hopelessness: a prophecy of death for young Black males and Nya’s greatest fear. Wright’s novel revolves around the fear, loathing and killings of a 20-something Black man named Bigger Thomas. Omari’s white teacher repeatedly asks him if he can relate to the character’s “animalistic rage.” Omari asks the teacher to drop it. The teacher doesn’t and gets an answer he wasn’t ready for. As to the playwright — she refuses to give you the answer.

“Pipeline” is a political play but not a polemic. Morisseau lets you think for yourself and doesn’t do your homework for you.

Her strategy is empathy.

The playwright gets you inside the characters’ skins. But she goes for the head as well as the heart. She raises challenging issues, but that’s a side effect.

At the play’s end, Omari offers his mother a 10-point checklist to help Nya see his humanity. The 10th commandment is missing. Why? He’s still working on it.

In the end, there’s no final answer.

The playwright leaves it up to you to fill in the blank.

It all adds up to an incandescent script and unforgettable characters. It’s powerful on stage and isn’t lost in translation to streaming video.

Bill Wagy understands the logic (and magic) of film. What you’ll see is a three-camera video, edited from two live performances. Starting with this footage, Wagy created a subtle editing rhythm from different camera angles. It’s a record of a stage performance, but it’s also a movie, and it works on those terms. Nicely done.

rage. Morisseau doesn’t. Her play doesn’t even define “pipeline.” You either know it, or you get it.

Morisseau’s characters feel like real people. But they’re larger than life — and burn far brighter. It’s the difference between a flashlight and a laser beam.

L. Peter Callender’s direction honors the playwright’s hyper-reality. His approach to dialogue and physicalization seem natural, never stagey.

But he doesn’t shy away from the white-hot intensity of the play’s brightest and darkest moments. When it’s time to go big, he doesn’t play it small.

The actors don’t either.

Eastlick’s Nya is a powerful woman — more importantly, she’s real. Eastlick avoids the tropes of the saintly single mother. Her Nya is flesh and blood. She feels and she bleeds.

Whitney’s characterization of Omari also defies cliche. He’s an angry young Black man. His sense that others have reduced him to that stereotype explains much of his anger. Emerald Rose Sullivan is great as Jasmine, Omari’s fiery, fearless, eloquent girlfriend.

King is understated and wounded as Xavier, Omari’s father and Nya’s ex. Xavier pays for his offspring’s boarding school — but his bond with his son is broken. King is heartbreaking in the scene where Omari declares his hatred and total rejection of his

ounds from the great pipe organs of church halls past can now be

heard in All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, thanks to an upgrade in the electronic organ at the altar.

“This organ is unique in that every stop on the organ is the sound of a pipe organ,” Music Director Dale Hooey said. “It’s amazing, the technology. What you are hearing is a pipe organ sound.”

The church had an electronic organ for 26 years, but it recently wore out. The one in place now is made by Allen Organ to replicate the sounds of the great pipe organs of yesteryear.

It’s a huge update in organ technology, and Hooey said the All Angels organ was the first of its kind shipped out.

“It’s the ultimate right now in electronic organs,” Hooey said.

“But I suspect that they will come to be obsolete.”

This new model cost upwards of $125,000, Hooey said. The first Allen Organ he played in the 1950s cost around $3,000.

“That model is actually in their museum now at Allen,” Hooey said.

Hooey is still learning the new organ, even though he’s spent a few hours on it already. The organ is such a full-body experience to play that he doesn’t think he could have learned it without his previous experience.

“I’m getting to be familiar on it now,” Hooey said. “You should spend a few hours on it before playing in public.”

Hooey has been doing concerts most Thursday mornings since November.

The music is broadcast out on the church lawn, and recently, church members have been able to come inside. He’ll be doing “tours” of the new organ and all its stops and sounds throughout May, at 11 a.m. Thursday mornings.

For the first concert with the new organ May 6, a dozen members came to watch Hooey take them on a tour through the organ.

It’s about the size of a piano, but take a peek at the keys, and any person inexperienced with the organ might get a little dizzy.

There are three rows of keys, pistons that Hooey pulls on either side and pedals below that he taps for more sounds. According to Hooey, you’re not a real organist if you don’t play with your feet.

“What people don’t understand when they look at the organ, they say, ‘Oh, my word, how do you play that thing?’” Hooey said.

“The larger the organ, and the more buttons and pistons, the easier it is to play. All of these things help the organist. … If you put your fingers and feet in the right place, it plays itself.”

For his May 6 concert, Hooey showcased each set of stops on the organ — flute, reed, string and diapason — and played a piece that used each set of sounds.

After the concert, every church member in attendance came up to get a closer look at Hooey’s mastery. He played a few notes and noted what size pipe would be necessary on the instruments of the past to play that same sound.

One would have been a towering 8-foot pipe, while a higher note would have been just 3 inches.

“They call it the king of instruments, and rightly so,” Hooey said. “It’s just a fun instrument to play. It’s one of the joys of my life playing church music.”

wo Longboat Key creators greeted old and new fans during a May 14 book signing at the Longboat Key Club’s Tennis Gardens.

Julie McGue, whose book, “Twice a Daughter,” was released May 11, welcomed friends, family and fans as she signed copies.

“Twice a Daughter” chronicles McGue’s journey to find her birth family. Two of her discovered cousins also came to the event.

McGue started the bookpublishing process during the pandemic and said she was excited she was able to host her first book-signing in person.

Mary Lou Johnson, a photographer and artist who has published two books about Longboat Key and Sarasota, signed and sold both throughout the evening. After a spate of canceled 2020 art shows, Johnson said she is thrilled to showcase her art again. She has five art shows lined up and is doing book signings whenever she can, she said.

he Harbourside Ballroom has been expecting you, Mr. Bond, for more than a year, and the Danny’s Dream gala finally brought the British agent to Longboat Key. The gala, which raised money for Ewing’s sarcoma research, was postponed in 2020, and the third edition was held May 15.

Longboat Key residents Sue and Chuck DiNatale began the Danny Fund after their son died from Ewing’s sarcoma in 2016.

He had been in his last year at Savannah College of Art and Design.

The team at UF Health was in charge of Danny’s health for four years, and the Danny Fund was created to provide resources for those researchers.

The event began with a cocktail hour and plenty of mingling.

Tables were decorated in James Bond posters and spy gear, and Daniel Craig look-alike James Taggart posed for photos. Before dinner, the Rev. Robert Dziedziak from the DiNatales’ parish, St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, gave the benediction.

The evening continued after dinner as University of Florida researcher Dr. Elias Sayour, Chief of Pediatric Oncology Bill Slayton and pediatric oncology Dr. Joanne Lagmay discussed updates in their world.

he Republican Club of Longboat Key held its last dinner meeting May 11 at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Ballroom before the summer break.

Vice President Chris Sachs said the evening’s keynote speaker was David Jenkins, the president of Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, a national nonprofit that believes conserving the environment and the Earth’s natural resources are conservative ideals.

Jenkins began his presentation with Teddy Roosevelt and examples of Republican administration-led policies including the

ith their red bills, pink feet and black bellies, blackbellied whistling ducks are easy to identify. They are equally recognizable by sound: Their call is a distinct, high-pitched whistle, often compared to that of a squeeze toy. Whistlers form large, chatty flocks. As their name suggests, these are not quiet birds.

Whistlers are fairly recent colonizers in the U.S. that originated in Central America and South America. Unlike some nonnative species, which were introduced by humans, these birds are here on their own. They expanded north into Florida, Texas and parts of Louisiana.

Interestingly, the first report of this species in Florida occurred in Sarasota County, when six birds were spotted in 1943.

Unlike many other duck species, whistlers mate for life, more typical of swans and geese than ducks. Although they prefer to nest in tree cavities, they will use nest boxes. A day or two after hatching, their checkerboardpatterned yellow and black ducklings jump to the ground.

Because they do well in humanadapted habitats, whistlers are growing in numbers and expanding their range. As with all wetland birds, though, they are threatened by loss of habitat and poor water quality.
