Spring break at the beach There’s a lot more to do on Longboat Key’s beaches during spring break than splash in the water or build sand castles. Brayden, 8, and Andy Gold, 4, from Louisville, Kentucky, learned that while visiting their grandparents. They did a little clamming March 30 (top). Just up the beach a day later, another group of kids, cousins Grayson and Ellie Tester of Madison, Wisconsin, and Jacob Reyes of Naperville, Illinois, visiting their grandparents, spotted (but didn’t touch) a small shark (above).

A lot about the spring holiday seemed normal. SEE PAGE 1B

Public Works, public service Robert “Rob” Habedank of the town’s’ Public Works Department had a different kind of work day Monday. Habedank was on duty at Bayfront Park when a woman’s dog jumped off the seawall into Sarasota Bay at the south end of park. A nearby couple tried to help but couldn’t find a path through the mangroves to reach the pet. When the couple sought Habedank’s help nearby, he jumped into the water, made friends with the dog and lifted him out. “A wonderful Public Works employee who didn’t hesitate for a minute to help,’’ said Elaine Kaufman, who saw it all unfold.
