Mayor joins doctor in ribbon-cutting With the snip of a ribbon, Mayor Ken Schneier welcomed the only full-time doctor on Longboat Key into business. Reed Medical Group celebrated its official opening on March 24 with a ribbon-cutting and ceremony thanks to the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce. Attendees were given a tour of the building and the backstory of the business from Dr. James Reed, who opened the practice in February. A physician’s assistant will join the practice soon. Reed is getting his concierge medical group up and running and will be collaborating with other medical providers, like The Paradise Center, which has several providers in the Tidewell Building on a rotating schedule.

Helping the Reading Buddies As long as the Reading Buddies program exists at the 13th Avenue Dream Center, the legacy of Beverly Sutton will live on. The Christ Church of Longboat Key member and Reading Buddies founder was honored with a plaque and scholarship endowment in her name at the March CCLBK mission dinner. Sutton founded the Reading Buddies in 2007 and has organized mentorship for more than 1,500 children. Many CCLBK members also serve as mentors for the kids of the 13th Avenue Dream Center, also known as the United Community Center. In Sutton’s honor, church members and supporters donated more than $100,000 to start the Beverly Sutton Endowment Scholarship Fund to support children attending the program.
