But Longboat Key police are pursuing a lead on the suspect responsible for painting driftwood trees with slogans touting Sanders this weekend, said Chief Pete Cumming. If caught, the suspect would face misdemeanor charges.

Pension woes inflame fire contract negotiations The town offered salary increases but no concessions on retirement, which firefighter reps say is the sticking point.

Union representatives say the message from firefighters is clear: They don’t want to pay more than other firefighters in the state for retirement benefits.

At a negotiation session March 31, the town offered a contract that includes wage increases but maintains its 13% contribution cap on firefighters’ behalf to the Florida Retirement System.

That would mean firefighters contribute approximately 9% of their salary toward their retirement; typically, employees enrolled in FRS contribute 3%.

In the past, the town had a defined-benefit plan for its firefighters. That plan, along with the town’s general employee and

police pension plans were frozen nearly three years ago. But according to Town Labor Attorney Reynolds Allen, approximately $25 million of unfunded liability remains from the plans.

The town and firefighters agreed to split FRS required contributions and cap the town’s payment in 2013, as the town prepared to freeze pension plans.

They reached the compromise because firefighters wanted to maintain a defined-benefit pension plan, while the town sought

to limit its risk.

Allen told union representatives Lt. Jason Berzowski and Lt. Keith Tanner that the Longboat Key Town Commission would not agree to limit firefighters’ contributions.

“They would never have agreed to go to FRS if they believed they’d be back where we are today,” Allen said.

The town offered wage increases of as much as $25,000 over the life of the contract in some cases, with retroactive pay — which Berzowski said brings Longboat Key in line with nearby agencies. But firefighters said that even with those increases, the department still would not be competitive due to higher retirement contributions and a lack of cost-of-living adjustments.

“My guys will be 20% behind their peers,” Berzowski said. He added that 70% of his department has five or fewer years of experience, and he couldn’t justify their paying “for a pension plan they had nothing to do with and are not participating in.”

Berzowski said the department could be forced to hire firefighters without paramedic certifications.

“We had six people show up for six positions,” he said of the recent hiring process to replace six longtime firefighters whose mandatory retirement dates are approaching because they are enrolled in the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP).

Union representatives agreed to take the offer to firefighters for a straw vote but were skeptical it would garner support.

“To say I’m boiling inside is an understatement,” Tanner said of the proposal. “It’s very obvious this town does not appreciate its employees.”

BRIEFS Judge validates GMD bonds Twelfth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Rochelle Curley validated the issuance of bonds not to exceed $25.25 million that Longboat Key voters approved in November for a Gulf of Mexico Drive underground utilities project.

Curley approved the bonds approximately one week after a March 24 hearing during which she heard testimony from the town manager, town consultants and the public.

The town sought the validation hearing in case of legal challenges to the referendum.

Despite an early Easter, businesses expect to stay hopping into April.

Usually, year-round guests can expect the roads, beaches, shops and restaurants to clear shortly after Easter.

But despite the Easter Bunny’s earlier-than-usual visit this year, it seems tourists and snowbirds are here to stay.

“They’re still here, so it almost didn’t matter when Easter was,” said Chamber of Commerce President Gail Loefgren. “They just haven’t left. Last year, it was noticeable after Easter, and it seemed like everyone had gone home. This year, they’re staying.”

This year, Easter fell on March 27, the earliest it’s been since March 23, 2008. Last year, the holiday was April 5. Next year, Easter is April 16.

“I was thinking it was going to be bad for our April bunch, but we’re booked easily through the second and third weeks of April,” Casa Del Mar General Manager Mark Meador said. “I was worrying about an early Easter at first, but we’re going to have an April that’s equal to or better than last year.”

“Some schools aren’t even on their spring breaks yet, so I think we’re going to stay strong in April,” St. Armands Circle Association Executive Director Diana Corrigan said. “It’s been a super season.”

Mote Marine Aquarium is preparing for a busier April than usual, due in part to its popular new otter exhibit, which debuted in February. The aquarium experienced its busiest day on record March 21, with 3,768 people.

“We don’t see the early Easter affecting our numbers,” Public Relations Manager Kaitlyn Fusco said. “It’s not slowing down.”

Loefgren believes the crowds have remained because of the slow start to season.

“It started later this year because it wasn’t as cold up north as it was last year,” she said. “Last year, they had all of the horrible snow and storms in the Northeast, and that wasn’t the case this year.”

“You may complain about the weather being rainy and in the 60s, but it’s not snowing or freezing like up north,” said Maureen Florio, a reservationist at Florida Vacation Connection. “We’ve experienced some unfortunate bad weather lately, but it’s better than wherever they came from.”

Others aren’t currently expe-

riencing less business yet but expect a slower April.

“We had a huge, tremendous March and were completely sold out, but as a result of Easter coming at the end of March, our April bookings are not as strong as they have been,” said Maureen Florio, a reservationist at Florida Vacation Connection.

The Resort at Longboat Key Club has also seen decreased bookings this month.

“Generally when Easter falls early, we see fewer bookings through the first couple weeks of April as compared to last year, but the pace picks right back up as guests arrive to enjoy their spring vacations,” Director of Communications Sandra Rios said. “We are anticipating another busy summer season.”

Other businesses that require advance appointments are bracing for a slower April, especially later in the month.

“We’ve had a lot of people who are leaving soon,” Design 2000 co-owner Irina LaRose said. “Certainly we can see it has slowed down. We have more openings available this month, and it’s easier for someone to get in.”

LaRose believes traffic will soon reflect the slower pace.

“I was out on the road, and it wasn’t completely bumper-tobumper,” she said. “It’s a start at least.”

On April 1, the day Verizon FiOS transferred its local cable, Internet and landline phone operations to Frontier Communications, customers on Longboat Key and throughout Sarasota found themselves without service.

Frontier has said the problems were largely addressed the day of the transition, but customers extending from Sarasota to Tampa are still reporting service issues.

The company has suggested some of the issues residents are raising aren’t attributable to the switch from Verizon, but that’s not to say that the company believes it’s operating at full strength in the region. Frontier spokesman Bob Elek encouraged customers still experiencing problems to reach out to customer service to troubleshoot any ongoing issues.

“While every day brings service issues in this business, it’s too soon to say we are ‘normal,’” Elek wrote in an email to the Longboat Observer. “We aren’t seeing anything widespread, but we are still transitioning, so there could still be issues we cannot see at the moment.”

AllCare Medical Centers, a family-owned practice with offices in Lakewood Ranch and Venice, will provide primary and urgent medical care at the new facility.

The medical center will also include the Center for Brain Health and Fitness Quest Physical Therapy.

The Longboat Key Foundation provided $600,000 to assist with startup costs.

lage, sometimes drawing applause or jeers from the crowd of more than 60 attendees during a twohour discussion.

But citing the need to revitalize the properties that include an old gas station and bank building, both of which have been vacant for years — and the fact that it is still early in the development process — commissioners approved the project’s request for a referendum. The decision to allow more

density on 2.6 acres of north-end land will come before island voters Aug. 30.

“I think we’re in the first inning of perhaps an extra-inning game,” said Commissioner Armando Linde. “And until we get past this first inning, we will not know what will be worked out that will satisfy the Villagers, the developers and the entire town.”

Floridays Development Co. CEO Angus Rogers and project manager James Brearly unveiled new renderings for the proposed four-story boutique hotel during the meeting. The firm added an “Old Florida” style to the project that Brearly said would better fit the Village’s character.

Despite the new architectural look, as well as an expanded permanent buffer along Broadway and plans for a breakfast restaurant and poolside grill to alleviate traffic concerns, many north-end residents remained opposed to the plans.

“It seems to me that one positive from this whole thing is that we’re concerned about it taking us an hour or two to get to Bradenton,” said Joe Iannello, who lives on Bayview Drive. “Don’t worry about it — Bradenton is coming to us. We are becoming Bradenton.”

Indeed, most of the project’s opponents who spoke at the meeting cited traffic as a factor in their opposition. In December, Floridays asked for a referendum to allow the firm to apply for more density on a cluster of properties southeast of the intersection of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive. If voters approve the measure, the firm could then ask for 105 additional tourism units from the town’s pool of voter-approved rooms.

But, the firm will also have to file for a rezone and comprehensive plan amendment to change the property’s future land use in September if the referendum passes, said Alaina Ray, Longboat Key director of Planning, Zoning and Building. Those proposals would go before the Planning and Zoning Board in November for recommendations, and the Town Commission would consider the plans the following month.

“That is a rough estimate,” Ray said.

Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force Chairman George Spoll, a former mayor, said commissioners should not consider arguments against the project, because the hearing was only to put a referendum on the ballot — not to rezone the property.

“The arguments are just so frustrating to sit here and listen to,” said Spoll, who has worked for more than five years on that task force. “I compliment the commission on their patience.”

Commissioner Phill Younger, who cast the sole vote against the referendum, wanted more clarity in the ballot language. He proposed citing within the referendum the 46 units per acre Floridays will seek through the multitiered development process.

But, Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale warned commissioners that Younger’s proposal and another from Commissioner Jack Daly specifically citing the long-term plans for 120 rooms, could violate state laws against rezoning through referendum.

Commissioner Irwin Pastor appealed to Floridays to reduce the number of proposed units at the hotel. He said with the right design, rooms could yield more

than $400 per night.

“When I look at your project the way it is right now, the demographics, the parking and more so the aesthetics are really not in line with Longboat Key at all,” Pastor said. “You said originally when you came here you would be building a boutique hotel. That is not a boutique hotel.”

In an interview with the Longboat Observer, Rogers said he doubts those rates were possible.

But he said a project can evolve as it works through the development process.

“The development business for this kind of project is not for the faint of heart,” Rogers said.

Floridays officials said they will take all the criticism into account, as they have so far in the process.

“Any time we hear anything from the Town Commission, we take it into serious consideration,” Brearly said.

Trucks ready to rumble for beach project The mid-Key beach project begins Wednesday and will bring about 65 sand-filled dump trucks.

With permits in place, a contractor chosen and Mote Marine Laboratory staff ready to relocate sea turtle nests, the town will start a long-awaited beach renourishment Wednesday.

But the shoreline expansion project, which the town received Florida Department of Environmental Protection permits for eight months ago, could also bring traffic headaches.

Roughly 65 dump trucks will traverse the roadways and beaches once or twice daily while the town places about 200,000 cubic yards of new sand mid-Key, said Town Manager Dave Bullock.

The vehicles will deliver sand from a mine in Immokalee using a route that snakes through St. Armands and continues up the south end of the Key. Contractor Olsen Associates Inc. aims to finish the $10 million, 4-mile project, which is broken down into four segments,

by October.

“I think everyone wants it to have a minimum of disruptions, but there will be some inconveniences,” Bullock said. “That’s what it takes to build the beach back.”

To mitigate traffic issues, the town has included a clause in the contractor’s agreement prohibiting trucks from lining up on Gulf of Mexico Drive if there are backups at work sites.

“Sure, you have to be concerned with any potential impediments to traffic flow, particularly now when we’re still in the high traffic season,” said Commissioner Jack Daly, who represents the town on

the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization.

But, with traffic likely to wane soon as part-time residents head back north, Daly is more concerned about the effects of a Florida Department of Transportation project that will temporarily reduce the westbound side of the Coon Key Bridge, near St. Armands, to one lane. The state is replacing two segments of the bridge as part of a project that will continue through July.

Meanwhile, town officials are prepared to tackle issues related to the project as they occur.

“We’ll have our police completely aware and involved with what’s going on,” Bullock said.

Police Chief Pete Cumming said he would have one or more officers visibly stationed at the south end to ensure traffic flows at its normal rate and trucks don’t linger on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“Our strategy is essentially to see how it unfolds, and if there are issues, (address them),” said Cumming, who will have additional officers on call during the renourishment. “We’re expecting a little bit of a learning curve.”

Mote will provide sea turtle biologists to patrol the beach every morning to relocate nests before work begins, and ecologists will monitor the activity of protected shorebirds and rope off nesting areas, according to a town news release.

Except for holidays, the dump trucks will be used from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

ect is the first of three pending renourishment projects in development on Longboat. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved one of two permits for the town to dredge the inlets on either side of the island for more than 550,000 cubic yards of sand.

“These have gone out to bid, and the bids are due later this week,” Bullock said.

The contractor chosen for those projects will begin dredging about 200,000 cubic yards of sand from New Pass by July, then move to Longboat Pass to renourish the north end of the island with the same amount of sand by September.

“Dredging passes or out in the gulf is always weather dependent,” Bullock said.

The city is still conducting negotiations with a private vendor proposing a series of upgrades for the Lido Beach pool and pavilion area, but a survey of Lido Key residents shows significant neighborhood opposition to the plans.

A group led by Daiquiri Deck co-owner Troy Syprett submitted plans for a revamped pool and pavilion, seeking to assume operational control of the city-owned property. The proposal included plans to improve the bathrooms, replace the concession stand with a 305-seat restaurant and add a mini-golf course.

Before searching for a private operator, the city had considered closing the pool and pavilion for half the year, citing a $100,000 loss for running the facilities. Lido residents united against that idea, submitting recommendations for a viable year-round operation.

Both city staff and Syprett say the residents’ suggestions, which included “enhanced food

service,” guided the selected proposal. The city’s survey of Lido residents, however, echoes opposition shown at an earlier workshop. More than half of the respondents say they disagree with the city’s decision to partner with a private vendor to develop and manage the pool and pavilion.

Not all of the results paint the proposal in a negative light.

Although 22% of respondents endorsed the proposal as-is, 54% said they would plan to visit more often with the proposed enhancements.

Residents said they’d be least likely to use the mini-golf course — which Syprett said is a concept his group isn’t married to. Syprett has said only one part of the plan is a potential deal breaker: the restaurant.

As the city continues to vet the proposed plans, the survey suggests that restaurant will remain a point of contention.

TRAFFIC PART II: COSTS MOUNT Prospective homebuyers express doubts. Beach Bistro lost 22 Longboat patrons in one night because of traffic. The horror stories on traffic are replacing our airline stories.

T

o continue to flog the congested-traffic horse — that our traffic congestion is becoming an economic crisis — here are a few anecdotes to buttress the point: n A new resident in the Water Club condominium voiced to her new neighbors that she now is not so sure she made the right decision to buy — if traffic congestion is going to keep her from getting on and off the Key. n A Realtor told us she’s hearing prospective buyers wonder out loud about purchasing here because of the traffic. n Sean Murphy, owner of the Beach Bistro on Anna Maria, said 22 patrons from Longboat Key were unable to make it to his restaurant in time for their reservations the Monday after Christmas. He subsequently implemented a policy: no reservations from Longboat Key until after 8 p.m. from January through March. n A Longboat resident reported taking an hour and a half this week to go from U.S. 41 and Bahia Vista to Longboat Key. n And last but not least, a Sarasota banker told us this week his commute from the north side of Lakewood Ranch to downtown Sarasota has become unpredictable — anywhere from 35 minutes to 90 minutes. Twice last week: 90 minutes each.

These tales are becoming our airline stories. Everyone has one.

And just to buttress and flog the point even more — that our traffic congestion will increasingly produce adverse economic consequences — it doesn’t take much to compile research results illustrating the costs of congestion.

One of the best places for this information is the California-based Reason Foundation, a nonprofit think tank that specializes in transportation issues.

Indeed, going back to 2009, Reason’s transportation specialists produced “Gridlock and Growth: The Effect of Traffic Congestion on Regional Economic Performance.” The director of that project was Adrian Moore, a Reason vice president and current Sarasota resident who writes occasionally for our Sarasota Observer.

That study demonstrated how reducing congestion in central business districts, airports and suburbs can improve gross regional product from 2% to 30%.

The study concluded: “Smart infrastructure investments that produce free-flowing road conditions will more than pay for themselves in future years by boosting the region’s economy.”

In that same year, Lee County officials to the south of us (Fort Myers, Cape Coral) engaged Reason’s transportation experts to help that county address what was then a severe congestion problem. At that time, Lee County residents were wasting $122 million a year stuck in traffic, according to Reason.

What’s more, when you read Reason’s study of Lee County, it’s as if you’re reading about every traffic issue in Sarasota. For example: “When visitors were asked what they disliked about their experience in Lee County, ‘traffic delays’ was the No. 1 response. In fact, it was mentioned as a negative by almost 20% of respondents. This is more than three times more often than the next most common answer (red tide and its effects).”

And consider this part of the Reason study on Lee County: “With the roads gridlocked, emergency vehicles may be seriously delayed, meaning the paramedic may not get there in time to save a life, or the firefighters may not arrive

in time to knock down a fire and save much of the building.

“If after-work hours are seriously congested, people may avoid restaurants and theaters that become too much of a hassle to get to.

People’s circles of opportunity are shrunk by congestion not just when it comes to employment. Congestion also shrinks their possibilities in entertainment, recreation and social life.

“Even computer dating services report many participants being unwilling to be matched up with people who live more than a certain distance away, because congestion simply makes it too much of a hassle to try to develop a long-distance dating relationship.”

Surely, you get the picture. You live it.

What did Reason Foundation recommend as the answer for Lee County?

It proposed a variety of strategies.

Among them: n Grade-separated intersections; n Managed lanes during peak hours n Variable toll pricing n Ramp metering (light signals managing the flow of cars merging onto freeways) Altogether, Reason’s comprehensive strategies for Lee County totaled $5.7 billion. But it estimated the reductions in vehicle costs and fatal accidents would total $13.5 billion over 20 years.

Lee County officials have implemented some of the strategies. As Reason’s Adrian Moore told us: “Dealing with congestion is in fact a very, very painful process. It is possible, though … But it entails a lot of tough choices and tradeoffs.”

Actually, there is no choice. Our traffic congestion must be confronted — now.

Her greatest contribution to the family legacy Longboat Key lost its connection to a great family legacy last week with the death of Celia “Cee” Edmundson.

Cee died after a tough struggle with cancer, a battle she fought quietly, humbly and valiantly.

She was her father’s daughter.

Cee was best known on Longboat as the daughter of the late Lt. Gen. James V. Edmundson. It was a blessing and, to some extent, a curse. He was a remarkable patriot and Air Force war hero — flying 107 combat missions in World War II, 32 in Korea and 42 in Vietnam; honored with 24 war medals; survivor of Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway and Guadalcanal.

After he and his wife, Lee, retired to Longboat Key in 1973, he continued his distinguished service as a private citizen, serving on town boards for 12 years, eventually becoming mayor in the mid-1980s and one of the town’s most revered citizens.

He, too, struggled with cancer — quietly, humbly and valiantly, dying in June, 2001, at age 86. Cee was 69.

Despite living under the wide shadow of her father, Cee made her own life. She had a career as a doctor of education in California. But in the late 1990s, she answered her ultimate calling, to move to Florida to help care for aging and ailing

Meanwhile, one reader sounded off on consultant Jamiroquai Anthony Miller’s comments in the Longboat Observer and Sarasota Observer, writing in an email: “Does Miller even have a driver’s license? Traffic flow is a series of math equations and basic logic.

Neither of which Miller seems to have even a clue.”

The reader realized it was an April Fools’ joke — and that there are no plans to reduce each side of the John Ringling Causeway to one way — and wrote: “We enjoy your April 1st editions and fell for it. Unfortunately, some of our other city planning should be April’s fools stuff too.”

Meanwhile, staffers at Visit Sarasota County enjoyed the story about commissioners rebranding the agency as “Don’t Visit Sarasota County” so much that they requested the image of the phony billboards for the office.

Another Sarasota Observer reader called in response to a county program that would allow beachgoers to reserve special “Sea Suites” — i.e. luxury plots of sand that came complete with champagne and a cabana boy. The reader wanted to reserve a Sea Suite for July.

Fortunately, the sand is still free — but you’ll have to bring your own champagne and cabana boy.

After fielding dozens of questions from concerned residents about the story, the community posted a sign on a bulletin board informing residents, “Observer plays a trick on the residents of the Preserve.” The note ended with this admonition: “The Board of Supervisors is not laughing.”

Another reader had harsh words for us for not investigating the fake double-decker desks more thoroughly, citing the potential for danger and chaos in the classroom.

“Whatever idiot in Manatee County thinks this is a good idea for our kids needs to be stopped,” the caller said.

On Longboat Key, we got calls from readers about Nik Wallenda’s wire walk — supposedly planned as part of a “Strip the Poles” celebration in honor of voters’ recent decision to bury the island’s utilities. Some readers wanted details so they could watch the walk; others were irate that power would be shut off for 12 hours to accommodate Wallenda’s stunt.

Meanwhile, many readers were relieved that Trump is not investing in the Colony — although one reader’s main regret was that we included the “Gotcha!” “...in a panic mode (many) would have called their realtors with sell orders saying, ‘I didn’t

Susanne and Wolfgang Pieken spent Christmas on Longboat Key and left with a fondness for the island, lots of memories — and a new restaurant.

“We were looking to start a new restaurant and fell in love with Longboat Key,” Susanne Pieken said. “We just knew it was the right place.”

Simply Susanne’s opened March 24, at 3172 Gulf of Mexico Drive, the former location of the short-lived Fresh & Fresh that opened in October.

“We liked the location,” Wolfgang Pieken said. “There’s an outdoor space. It fit what we’re looking for.”

The restaurant serves coffee drinks, smoothies, locally sourced bagels, hot dogs, sandwiches and Big Olaf ice cream.

“With the beach so close, we’d love to be a grab-and-go spot,” Susanne Pieken said. “There was a need for it.”

The Piekens are originally from Boulder, Colo., and spent a year in Massachusetts before coming to Longboat Key. Although Susanne Pieken has managed restaurants in the past, this is the first one the couple has owned.

“We want to be a casual morning and afternoon spot,” Wolfgang Pieken said. “We’re open to suggestions, and we want to try to explore with things to see what people like.”

The restaurant is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

Celia ‘Cee’ Edmundson led with courage, compassion Cee Edmundson, of Longboat Key, died March 31. She was 69.

Cee Edmundson lived a life of service, whether it was in her career as an educator or her work with the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key

as its first woman president.

She reminded family members and friends of her father, the late Lt. Gen. James Edmundson, who served in 181 combat missions in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and earned 24 medals. He also served as Longboat Key commissioner and mayor.

“He was a man of great guts, and she was very similar to him,”

retired Longboat Observer Senior Editor Dora Walters said. “She was a very fine person and took so much after her dad.”

Celia “Cee” Edmundson, of Longboat Key, died March 31, after a battle with cancer. She was 69.

Born Dec. 15, 1946, in Washington, D.C., she moved to Irvine, Calif., in 1980 and worked at a school for the deaf.

In 1982, the Irvine School District hired her, and she taught various grades. In 1988, she began administering the Computer Education for Language Learning program for students with limited English proficiency. The state-ofthe-art program became a model for schools across the country.

She earned her doctorate in education from Pepperdine University in 1996.

“She was a leader and a gogetter in whatever she was doing,” friend and neighbor Pam DeFratus said. “If she had a goal set, she plowed right through it. She was a very focused person.”

Edmundson moved to Longboat Key in 1997 to assist her father in taking care of her mother, Lee. Two years after her father’s death in 2001, she found a trunk of letters he wrote to his wife throughout their lifetimes. She published the letters in a book, “Letters to Lee,” in 2010.

She was a member of the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club from 1998 to 2007, serving as president from 2001 to 2002.

“She took her job very, very seriously, and certainly she always had my admiration for the person she was and the fact she was dedicated to her position and whatever endeavors she had,” Kiwanis Club member Vince DeLisi said.

When Edmundson wasn’t leading, she was spending time with her pets, dog, Darby, and cat, Tessa.

“She loved animals,” Lea Edmundson said. “She even had a pet rat at one point. She had bunnies and cats and dogs and birds, and they all got along. Darby and Tessa were her joys.”

Edmundson also enjoyed her time on Longboat Key — even when it was too cold.

“She was always up for anything, and at one point after coming to Longboat, she really wanted to try a Sea-Doo,” her sister-inlaw, Lea Edmundson, said. “It was pretty chilly, and I remember telling her it was too cold. She said, ‘Cold is temporary, fun is forever’ and just took off.”

“What an inspiration she was,” longtime friend Janet Hunter said. “She was an absolutely loving person. She was always concerned about others and rarely talked about herself. She rarely ever complained.”

She is survived by her brother, Edwin James Edmundson, and his wife, Lea, of St. Cloud; nephew, Scott James Edmundson, his wife, Haley West, and their two children, of Chimacum, Wash.; uncle, Clem Turner, of Portland, Ore.; and seven cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. April 23, at Durante Park, 5550 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Memorial donations can be made to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, the Longboat Key Garden Club for a dog park or Tidewell Hospice.

“Something she said was, ‘Sadness won’t last, but just the sweetness will remain,’ and we know she’d want us to remember that,” Lea Edmundson said.

Larry Marthaler built bridges in community Former Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Larry Marthaler dies at 81.

On Oct. 17, 1983, Longboat residents faced a transportation dilemma when the New Pass Bridge became stuck in open position.

Suddenly, for drivers who used the bridge to travel between Longboat Key and Sarasota, a 10- to 12-minute drive took more than an hour as they were forced to drive through Manatee County.

Larry Marthaler, then one year into his 16 years as executive director of the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau, made the drive twice, then said to himself, “There has got to be a better way.”

He thought back to his time in Saigon, Vietnam, in the 1970s, when he sold airline tickets for Pan American World Airways to soldiers going home on leave.

Ferryboats were a standard part of transportation there.

Within 48 hours, Marthaler had worked out a plan with LeBarge Tropical Cruises to ferry passengers between Longboat Key and the Old Salty Dog on City Island, with Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) buses carrying passengers to stops.

Suddenly, frustrated commuters were starting their days with a cup of coffee on board the LeBarge and ending it with a beer

while heading home. Within a few days, live music was added to the boat, and some passengers felt such camaraderie that they stuck around for a second beer at the Old Salty Dog. “It was a nice little party on the boat,” Marthaler told the Longboat Observer in 2008. “There was a common inconvenience.”

Marthaler, a former Longboat Key resident who served as executive director of SCVB from 1982 to 1998, died March 29, in Nashville, Tenn., where he had moved recently.

The bridge reopened exactly two weeks after it became stuck with its north and south spans welded together. Nearly one year later, Marthaler received the Golden Gavel Award for “Outstanding Community Service” in recognition of his novel solution.

“He wasn’t going to let it go being a problem no one solved,” said former Longboat Key Vice Mayor Dave Brenner, Marthaler’s neighbor at the Islander Club.

Born Feb. 1, 1935, in Chicago, Marthaler graduated from the University of Illinois in 1957 and began his 16-year career with Pan-Am the following year. He was stationed in New York, Denver, Miami, Chicago, South Vietnam and Atlanta.

Marthaler first visited the Sarasota area when interviewing for a position at Florida Airlines, where he worked from 1975 to 1982.

“We were knee-deep in snow while he was stationed in Denver, so it didn’t take much to sell us on a move to the Sarasota area,” said

Marthaler led a successful campaign that persuaded voters to pass a tourist development tax in 1988, which voters had rejected twice.

“He must have gone from the Rotary Club to the Kiwanis and all over,” Mary Marthaler said of her husband’s effort. “He made a lot of speeches.”

In fiscal 2015, TDT funds generated more than $19 million for beach renourishment, arts and cultural activities and tourism promotion.

Marthaler also created the Sarasota Circus Ring of Fame at the center of St. Armands Circle

Park in 1988 to showcase Sarasota’s circus history. The Ring of Fame currently honors 125 individuals and groups for their contributions to the circus and inducts new members each year.

“He felt very strongly that tourism, done the right way, would have a significant impact,” Brenner said. “And he was right.”

Marthaler is survived by his wife, Mary, of Nashville, and brother, Kent, of Evanston, Ill. A celebration of life will take place at a later date in Sarasota.

Part-time Longboat Key resident Thomas Hecht first heard Hitler speak when he was just 5.

“I heard him screaming on the radio,” he said.

He would soon experience firsthand the persecution Hitler and his Third Reich would inflict on European Jews when his family fled the Nazis.

Now, Hecht teaches history and works to teach educators how to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive.

“I think it’s important to know history,” said Hecht, who also teaches and lectures at the Longboat Key Education Center and the Al Katz Center for Holocaust Studies & Jewish Learning Inc., in Bradenton.

Born in 1929 in the former Czechoslovakia, Hecht remembers living in relative peace until March 1939, when Germany invaded. His family remained there until September that year, when they fled to Budapest, Hungary.

“We were kicked out of our homes,” he said. “I was kicked out of school.”

His father, who worked in the international pharmaceutical

business had fled to Paris that July and arranged for visas for the family.

They stayed in Paris until the day before its occupation in 1940 and spent the next two months on the roads of France.

They moved to Portugal in an attempt to find areas that would absorb Jewish refugees. The family moved to Canada after the Czechoslovakian government intervened on behalf of 28 of its citizens.

Hecht’s family lost approximately 70 members to the Holocaust.

In Montreal, he said, he felt safe for the first time. He attended Sir George Williams University and McGill University, where he earned his master’s in political science.

He worked with his father in the pharmaceutical industry for the better part of a decade while teaching college courses, as well.

Hecht worked closely with him and founded the Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies in 1993, which served an advisory role to the Israeli government and foreign statesmen.

As a child survivor of the Holocaust, Hecht received restitution from Germany. He used it to establish Teaching the Holocaust to Educators, to carry on the awareness of what happened.

Hecht said he felt bitter about his persecution for part of his life, but he’s made peace — both with his experiences and the fact that he survived.

“I feel very bad for those that didn’t survive and that innocently died,” he said. “I am at peace with myself at various levels. I’m happy that my family is happy, I see an absence of totalitarian threats in the world — not that we don’t have totalitarianism — but they’re not out to conquer the world like Hitler. He was the epitome of evil.”

OBITUARIES ROBERT COHEN

Robert Cohen, 83, of Longboat Key and formerly of Boston, died March 30.

Born April 13, 1932 to Evelyn and Julian Cohen, in Boston, he was educated at the Roxbury Latin School, Harvard College and Columbia Business School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and afterward ran Blackstone Mills, the family upholstery fabric manufacturing company. He moved to Longboat Key in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Laurel; three nieces; and one great-niece.

SCOTT PALMER

Scott Douglas Palmer, 51, of Bradenton, died March 16.

Born in Detroit, he moved to Bradenton in 1983. He served as a golf pro in Longboat Key for 15 years and most recently worked at Bradenton Country Club.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his two daughters, Hailey and Nickie, both of Sarasota, and his mother, Shirley Schuller, of Bradenton.

Services were held April 1.

merica grew up in a ranch house, and Sarasota was no exception.
