Commission hangs up on dispatch discussion

TOWN CENTER Plans for a concept hit a speed bump as the town seeks consensus.

Commissioners Pat Zunz and Irwin Pastor requested that other Longboat Key commissioners to discuss the town’s in-house 911 dispatch service Monday at the regular workshop. But a majority of commissioners blocked the call. That means town staff will continue with the direction the commission gave in March, when a majority agreed to abandon its in-house police dispatch service and use the 911 service the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office first offered more than two years ago. At Monday’s workshop, Zunz took advantage of an agenda item seeking a $25,000 budget transfer to pay for additional overtime funding for Longboat Key police officers to provide dispatch services. Uncertainty over the future of town dispatchers has led dispatch staff to seek other jobs. As SEE DISPATCH PAGE 2A

Goodwill still shopping for Longboat Key location The nonprofit’s interest in the Key hasn’t dropped off. Now, it’s seeking goodwill from the town in hopes of building a donation center.

Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key member Robert Kromer, 87, was presented with the Walter Zeller Fellowship award for his service to the community at the club’s April 16 weekly breakfast meeting. The Zeller award, which comes with a lapel pin and medallion, is one of Kiwanis’ top two awards. Kromer was eligible for the award by donating at least $1,250 to the Kiwanis International Foundation Eliminate project, which vaccinates mothers and their babies against maternal and neonatal tetanus. “Dr. Kromer is a very generous Kiwanian that has made multiple donations to the international foundation and our foundation that are above and beyond the recommended contributions,” said Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key Secretary John Wild.

Goodwill Manasota Inc. isn’t coming to the former Longbeach Chevron gas station on the north end of Longboat Key, but it still wants a presence on the island. “Donations are being missed out there because of the lack of an attended drop-off donation center on the island,” said John McKay, a Bradenton businessman and former Republican state legislator who donates his time as a Goodwill Manasota ambassador. “Our primary goal is to get an attended donation drop-off center out there somewhere.” Three weeks ago, Goodwill SEE GOODWILL PAGE 6A
