EGGS-TRA SPECIAL EASTER
Though the telecommunicators of Sarasota County’s dispatch office are pretty good at communicating from afar, the Longboat Key Fire Department wanted to take an opportunity to thank them in person. In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which started April 11, Hunter the therapy dog trekked out to Sarasota. He was accompanied by his mom, Longboat Key’s Deputy Chief Sandi Drake, who brought bagels and a note from Chief Paul Dezzi to the Sheriff’s Office to thank the telecommunicators for all they do. Longboat Key doesn’t have its own call center, so calls are handled by the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office. Dezzi thanked them for handling often-panicked calls and bringing useful information to first-responders. Hunter thanked them with some fluffy hugs.

Easter lilies were planted at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church.

Of course, the classic Easter flower is the lily. The Easter decorating team at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church had plenty of those surrounding the sanctuary steps on April 17, but front and center stood dozens of sunflowers. While they added a pop of brightness to the church’s display, there’s a deeper meaning behind the blooms. The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and has been used as a symbol of peace in the country for decades. Throughout the current war, they’ve been used across the world in protests against Russia’s invasion. At home on St. Armands Key, they took center stage on Easter Sunday. Music Director Michael Bodnyk said the decorating team added them as a show of solidarity with Ukraine’s people.
