Crosswalk examination Town commissioners have found consensus on the controversial crosswalk issue — get rid of them.

A Longboat Key Town Commission workshop discussion about a new crosswalk at North Shore Road Monday ended with commissioners agreeing that they would like all of the controversial traffic features removed — at least in their current form.

At their next regular meeting, board members will vote on whether to send a letter to the Florida Department of Transportation requesting the removal — or substantial modifications — on all four crosswalks on the 11-mile stretch of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Commissioners don’t want the state’s proposed north-end crossing unless it comes with a

reduced speed limit, though they said they would still support an expanded sidewalk on the roadway.

“I am very willing right now to say let’s take them out,” said Mayor Jack Duncan, who led the push for an informal agreement on the move after about an hour of discussion. “Lock, stock and barrel.”

Town Manager Dave Bullock in an interview Tuesday said he would speak with FDOT officials, and present potential options for improving the crosswalks.

Commissioner Phill Younger called for larger red flashing lights on signage at the workshop.

But the impact of Monday’s consensus is unclear.

“We can’t give opinions on possibilities,” said FDOT spokesman Robin Stublen. “We have to have stuff cut in stone.”

The agency declined to comment on the issue until the Town Commission adopts a formal position at a regular meeting.

“It’s a very bold decision,” said Duncan, who acknowledged he was in favor of the idea when commissioners pushed for them three years ago.

Since FDOT installed the crosswalks in December, a vehicle has struck a pedestrian, and residents — including several commissioners — have complained of cars refusing to stop when the lights are flashing and pedestrians crossing near, but not on, the crosswalk.

“I wasn’t a big fan of putting in crosswalks in the first place,” said Vice Mayor Terry Gans. “My belief is that people cross where they want to cross.”

walk on the north end of Gulf of Mexico Drive and install a new crosswalk with more intense signage than the others on the island.

“My fear is that someone is going to cross that street, and at 45 mph, they’re going to get hammered into oblivion,” Duncan said.

An interactive video designed

by IT Specialist Barry Gaines — which took roughly a day to make — explained how the crosswalk would function.

But the video didn’t convince commissioners, who remained opposed to the crosswalk.

Commissioners remained in favor of reducing the speed limit from Boardwalk to the Longboat Pass Bridge, with some calling for a reduction for the entire stretch of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said FDOT keeps lighting uniform throughout the state, so red flashers are unlikely. But the state is conducting a study that could support lowing the speed limit on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Commissioners asked Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming what he thought of the crosswalks during the meeting.

“I honestly don’t believe personally that crosswalks on a 45 mph-speed highway are a good idea,” Cumming said.

Town staff aim to explain land use policies as development proposals trickle in.

ongboat Key voters may decide on three separate requests for increased density for island projects this year — a town record, according to Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray. And with the increase in project proposals comes a backlash from many residents. At a meeting April 4, more than 10 residents spoke out against a referendum that could ultimately allow Floridays Development Co. to increase density on a group of eight parcels at the north end.

But a successful referendum won’t automatically give Floridays permission to build the hotel.

If voters approve the Aug. 30 referendum, which town commissioners agreed to put on the ballot at the April 4 meeting, the developer will still have to get Town Commission approval for more density to allow 15 units on the north end property, a zoning category change and a site plan approval, which would include the request for 105 tourism units from the pool of 250 tourism units voters approved in 2008.

That means Floridays would need three decisions from town commissioners to proceed with a proposed 120-unit hotel, as Ray explained during a scheduled discussion of the town’s referendum process at Monday’s workshop.

“Because of the frequency and some of the misunderstanding is out there what the referendum does and does not do, we just felt like its an opportune time,” she said of the timing of the agenda item.

Along with Floridays request, Whitney Beach Plaza owner Ryan Snyder also received consent to move forward toward a November referendum during the workshop.

Commissioners also approved a request from Harbour Square office complex owner Oscar Parsons to begin working on ballot language that could allow him to add a residential unit to the property at 4143 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Town staff refer to these referendums as “Mother, may I?” initiatives, because if passed they don’t automatically guarantee changes.

“Think of it as a gateway into the land use process,” said Bullock during the workshop. “That’s all it is: a gateway.”

Longtime town employee Harvey Hill dies Harvey Lee Hill, a contract employee for the town, died April 5.

Hill, 63, worked for the town as a plans examiner and building inspector for 19 years ending in 2006, according to Planning, Zoning and Building Director Alaina Ray. He was hired on as a part-time contractor roughly a year ago, to help while the department was shorthanded.

“He loved the town, he loved working for the department, and he just enjoyed being out and seeing the contractors and residents,” Ray said. “He was just a real conscientious person.”

Manasota Memorial Park and Funeral Home, in Bradenton, is responsible for arrangements.

Aria condominium receives certificate of occupancy Aria condominium, 2251 Gulf of Mexico Drive, received its certificate of occupancy last week, allowing residents to begin moving into the 16-unit condo.

Construction on the $64 million project began in June 2014. The condominium was developed by Sarasota-based Jay Tallman and built by Suffolk Construction. The project also included preserving the property’s historic Villa Am Meer estate, which will be used as a residents’ club.

of Mexico Drive or, as Mayor Jack Duncan called it, the “main trunk” where problems manifest.

Still, he expressed optimism that an upcoming Florida Department of Transportation study will put solutions within reach.

Some organizations asked the commission to consider longterm solutions for beach erosion.

But Town Manager Dave Bullock explained the limited alternatives to beach renourishment.

“I don’t know of a solution other than placing sand,” he said.

Here are some specific requests Longboat Key organizations placed before the commission.

Beach renourishment, which has already begun between the Colony and the Islander Club, was a hot topic at the workshop.

The Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums asked the commission to mitigate traffic problems by forming a committee of residents, business owners and city officials to weigh in on the issue. It also endorsed the use of public transportation, including a trolley.

To improve cellular service, the federation suggested Longboat Key install “dark fiber” and select providers that will develop a distributed antennae network.

It asked the commission to create a town center that will include a cultural center and the recently announced medical center and to redevelop Bayfront Park in a timely manner and include a recreation center.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce asked the commission to streamline the town’s regulatory and permitting process. It also asked the commission to oppose possible legislation allowing use of tourist tax revenue for purposes other than promoting tourism.

The Longboat Key Estates Club sought dredging for some of the neighborhood’s canals.

Sleepy Lagoon homeowners asked the commission to improve the landscaping in front of the Public Works building on General Harris Street.

Longboat Key Education Center Executive Director Susan Goldfarb said she’d been given the OK by Ringling College of Art & Design President Larry Thompson to tell the commission that the Education Center would be a part of the town center that Ringling recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with the town to develop.

irginia Sanders, the doyenne of all things environmental and artistic on Longboat Key, died Sunday morning. She was 93.

“There was nobody who cared more about our world and about Longboat than Virginia,” said friend and fellow Longboat Key Garden Club member Susan Landau. “She was unique.”

“She always had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her lips,” said longtime friend Jeremy Whatmough.

Sanders died after battling a series of illnesses over the past few years.

Dubbed “the conscience of Longboat Key” by Garden Club member Vicki Lyons, Sanders for nearly four decades was a force on the island. She was known as the Key’s leading environmentalist.

But she also was deeply involved in the community.

“She was just an amazing lady, and very devoted,” said Kumar Mahadevan, former CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory.

Sanders, up until her death, had been a volunteer at Mote for nearly four decades, where she helped develop the programming for monthly meetings for the volunteers.

“She was a big cheerleader for everything Mote did,” said Mahadevan.

Not long after she and her second husband, the late Jack Sanders, moved in 1976 to Longboat Key, Sanders volunteered for Turtle Watch, a volunteer group that monitored sea turtle nests on Longboat’s beach. It wasn’t long before that group teamed up with Mote’s turtle programs

— which led to more involvement for Sanders.

A prolific artist and writer in her own right, Sanders began illustrating and editing one of Mote’s publications. And that led to her becoming a longtime columnist in the Longboat Observer. With Dwight Davis, Sanders authored and illustrated the monthly column, “Marine Scene,” in which they educated the newspaper’s readers about any and every subject pertaining to marine life.

“What I remember about Virginia was her big smile, her red lipstick and she was always cheerful,” said then Longboat Observer Executive Editor Lisa Walsh. “She also always had her column in on time.”

Sanders became involved in the Garden Club, serving multiple years as president. A year and a half ago, the club bestowed its “emeritus member” title on her.

there to support it. Last year, at age 92 and in ill health, she rode in the Longboat Key Freedom Fest parade as the grand marshal.

In the midst of all of this community involvement and volunteerism, Sanders filled her home on Hideaway Bay with her own colorful oil, water color and penand-ink paintings. She was prolific.

Mahadevan said when he retired a few years ago, Sanders

sketched a portrait of him on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico.

If you didn’t know Sanders, from the looks of her you likely would not have guessed the depth of her influence on Longboat Key. Diminutive, petite and softspoken, Sanders was always chipper, ready with a smile. “She was such a nice lady, and so funny,” said Madelyn Spoll, another Garden Club member.

But she was determined in her environmentalism. Her proudest legacy on Longboat Key was the preservation of Sister Keys. From 1989 to 1992, Sanders teamed up with fellow Longboaters Rusty Chinnis and Anna Miller to form the Sister Keys Conservancy.

They fought a developer’s plan to develop Sister Keys. In 1992, thanks to their efforts, the town purchased the islands, ensuring their preservation as mangrove wetlands. Sanders said this was her proudest accomplishment.

Sanders went on to attend and graduate from Montclair State Teachers College in Montclair, N.J. Afterward she became a junior high math teacher.

Sanders and her first husband, Edward D. Rosenberg, moved to Chicago in 1950 when he enrolled in law school. They divorced in the early 1970s.

In 1977, Sanders married another Chicagoan, Dr. Jack Sanders, and the two moved to Longboat Key. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Jack. She is survived by her daughters Nina Burke and her husband, Brian; grandsons Casey and Ryan Burke; and Beth Rosenberg Brewer and her husband, Scott; and granddaughter, Marjorie Brewer.

The family plans a memorial service in August on Longboat Key. Contributions can be made in Sanders’ name to Mote Marine Laboratory, the Longboat Key Garden Club and Sarasota Baywatch.

The subject of traffic just won’t go away. That was clearly evident Monday at the Longboat Key Town Commission’s annual goals and objectives session.

Doing something about traffic was one of the dominant themes of the requests from town organizations and homeowners’ associations.

Not to the deflate their hopes, Longboat commissioners reminded attendees the town has no control over the traffic originating off the Key or of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Nonetheless, it was good to see Mayor Jack Duncan at the same day’s Town Commission workshop vow to address what has become another critical traffic issue: Longboat’s four Gulf of Mexico Drive crosswalks.

Thanks to Mayor Duncan’s passion and persuasion, he won the consensus Monday of his fellow commissioners to pressure the Florida Department of Transportation to remove the four death-trap crosswalks installed six months ago on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

It’s difficult to find anyone who has lived on Longboat Key for two years or more to think the crosswalks are an improvement to pedestrian safety.

Why, even Longboat Key’s chief of

police, Peter Cummings, told town commissioners they are a safety hazard.

Consider this latest near tragedy: At the southern crosswalk near a Country Club Shores entrance, a family of four, including two small children, started crossing Gulf of Mexico Drive. A northbound motorist slowed for the family as he approached the crosswalk.

But just as he did this, the motorist behind him veered into the center of the Gulf of Mexico Drive and accelerated to pass the slowing motorist.

Thankfully, a horrible tragedy was averted.

Unfortunately, that was not an anomaly. Near misses and confusion are the norm.

From the day the crosswalks were installed, we have argued they clearly have achieved the opposite of what was intended. They have made Gulf of Mexico Drive more dangerous than ever.

Indeed, we have always questioned why they were needed, especially when you consider that for the town’s previous 60 years of incorporation, the vast majority of Longboat Key residents and visitors have managed to cross Gulf of Mexico Drive safely by employing that tried-and-true method of common sense: ambulator

emptor — walker beware.

It works.

We could not — and still do not — understand what changed so dramatically that the crosswalks suddenly were a necessity. Longboat Key has fewer hotel visitors than it had two decades ago. Longboat Key has fewer year-round residents than it had two decades ago. And Longboat Key has fewer retailers and businesses than it had two decades ago.

There was no obvious demand for them.

But it likely won’t be easy removing the crosswalks. FDOT is a gigantic, slow-moving organization. (It is responsible for more than 40,000 miles of roadway in this vast state.)

And you can imagine FDOT officials won’t be anxious to throw away the $1 million invested to design, purchase and install the crosswalks.

Good luck, mayor. Be persistent.

And while the mayor is at it, why not go all the way? Here’s another suggestion to lay on FDOT’s table: An offer to purchase Gulf of Mexico Drive from the state.

Own it and control it.

Just imagine what good that could mean … toll gates at both ends; limited pass-through motorists; maintenance when and how the town wants it.

An old idea resurrected: a bridge to Longboat Key To continue on the subject du jour, when we recently spoke about the region’s traffic challenges with Adrian Moore, a transportation policy expert at the Reason Foundation and a resident of Siesta Key, he was definitive on the way to solve the backups extending from the Ringling Bridge to Longboat Key: “Sorry,” Moore said, “you have to build another bridge.”

Ah, yes, the Longboat bridge idea. It’s not new. It has been around since the 1960s. Check out what the late Ralph Hunter, founder of the Longboat Observer, chronicled in his 2002 history of Longboat Key, “From Calusas to Condominiums.”

Hunter, an advocate for a bridge to Longboat Key, probably would make the same conclusion today that he did when he wrote this entry in his book:

Cross-Bay Bridge

Longboat Key commissioners and residents as early as the late 1960s felt there should be a fixed, toll bridge across the Sarasota Bay linking Longboat Key to the mainland. In 1969, the commissioners authorized the Longboat Key Bridge Committee, which prepared a documented study saying that such a bridge was “urgently needed and feasible.” At the time the population of longboat Key was close to 3,500 residents, many of them seasonal. The study languished at the county level.

In 1973, another study was authorized, and representatives were named from the Florida Department of Transportation, Sarasota and Manatee counties, Longboat Key and the cities of Bradenton and Sarasota. After more than a year, the final report was issued naming 14 possible locations for the bridge. The recommendation was for a fixed bridge to be built near the center of Longboat Key to a place on the mainland.

The plan ran into objections from

Longboat commissioners, economists and environmentalists, who thanked everyone for his work and ignored the study.

In 1978, the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) recommended a mainland bridge to Longboat Key and a fixed bridge replacement for the New Pass Bridge in its long-range planning.

After lengthy and acrimonious debate in Longboat Key, Lido Shores and the city of Sarasota, two hold-out Longboat Key commissioners, Sam Seegel and Sid Ochs, agreed to a bascule bridge for New Pass, provided the cross-Bay bridge was put on a fast track. The bascule bridge was built, but the mainland bridge idea died.

In 1980, the Sarasota-Manatee Area Transportation Study (SMATS), which replaced the MPO, did a financial analy-

sis of the cross-Bay bridge question and declared that tolls would not be enough to pay for the bridge.

In March 1981, a Town referendum was held on Longboat Key to vote on whether the residents were in favor of a fixed, crossBay bridge. Surprisingly, the vote was yes: 1,505, and no: 440. The favored location was mid-Key. In 1985, Commissioner Ochs suggested the alternate location for a crossBay bridge from Bradenton Beach on the south end of Anna Maria Island to an extension of 53rd Street in Manatee, the direct route to I-75.

Opponents claim a crossBay bridge would cost too much, would be ecologically destructive and would necessitate making Gulf of Mexico Drive a four-lane highway. Proponents claim the savings in human life in case of a hurricane makes the idea mandatory, that the bridge would let people off the Key as well as let them on. They claim that it would actually reduce traffic on the Key, since many would go directly to the mainland for shopping and the airport rather than drive over the draw bridges at either end of the Key. Every few years the idea comes up again. The need for a bridge is apparent to all, but the objectors have won out over the years. Perhaps someday a bridge to the mainland will be a reality, but the odds are against it any time soon. nnn

Here’s where new bridges should go: An offshoot of the east end of the Ringling Bridge to City Island. Make it a toll bridge that bypasses St. Armands Circle. And the North Bay Bridge depicted in the map.

It is an error to refer to this proposed hotel as a boutiquetype small hotel, as you seem to imply. The fact is that it is a basic hotel of 120 rooms for $200 or less, not $400 per night. That is a significant difference that needs to be made clear.

Because of many environmental concerns many people on the north end strongly oppose this ill-conceived idea.

It is not just the “Villagers.”

The sewers in the area can barely handle the community as it is. What do you suppose another 120 units will do to that? What about traffic?

What about the beautiful public beach across the street?

Try adding 120 units worth of people to that without any facilities. These are clearly environmental concerns that are not being addressed adequately by anyone. If the current commission will not protect our unique neighborhood then we must do so ourselves.

To characterize our neighborhood as opposing any change is unfair. You need to ask yourself what would you do if your neighborhood was constantly being threatened? The Village is a “historic” landmark and needs to be preserved. If the town will not adequately protect us, then who will?

As a Village resident I resent the fact that we are often portrayed as constant complainers. If the town government

would do its job to protect us, it would not be necessary.

This hotel is a horrible idea on many levels. I would appreciate it if in the future you would factually report this hotel as what it is, not some cute little expensive boutique hotel with a few rooms.

Floridays project is a white elephant Why would we put 105 of our coveted, voter-approved tourism units on a non-beachfront, land-locked piece of property?

This Floridays project is bad for the community — for many reasons mentioned at the latest Town Commission meeting (and continue to be ignored).

No one has mentioned the fact that our commissioners are leading us down a path that will result in the allocation of 105 tourism units on a less desirable piece of property.

When the community approved these additional units by vote, it many voters believed they would be applied to existing tourism-zoned properties, not to new zones.

The vast majority of the existing tourism-zoned properties on the Key are located on the beach!

I understand the current issue is only a referendum for density increase, but we all know where this is going.

Hotel would detract from Key’s character As new residents on LBK, we were very concerned to learn about the scheduling of an Aug. 30 referendum that, if passed, could result in the construction of another hotel on LBK. Because the hotel would be built on a location that currently imposes zero vehicular or beach traffic on LBK and contains considerable green space, the hotel would be certain to worsen, markedly, our in-season traffic congestion, to result in a material change in the wonderful character of the Key, and to impose a substantial increase in the human load on our precious environment.

We urge our fellow residents to be sure to acquire ballots to vote against the Aug. 30 density referendum.

Beach does not belong to you Longboat Key does not keep its beaches clean, and so it has a terrible record of turtles being injured.

What is wrong with this town? I suspect that my love of the beaches here is not shared by many, judging by the way the beaches are ignored and abused.

So now the commissioners are going to ask all the other beach communities what they do so that Longboat Key can do the least and keep its “worst” title?

First, you must know that no one owns the beach from the water to the highest tide. That is a law of the land. So you cannot leave your belongings there ever. It does not belong to you.

Apparently, different areas have different rules for their particular condominiums.

Except during turtle season when the rules are written everywhere: All chairs and other beach stuff must be removed from the beach, curtains must be drawn to keep

any light from getting out.

Light poles must not shed light (ours have red covers to reduce the light so they will not draw the baby turtles away from the moon over the water, which is what they are supposed to follow for safety).

Above the high tide, it is not wise to leave your stuff on the land because the turtles can still get disoriented and try to push their way through to the light in your house.

Every condo management should be sure that these rules are well-known to all residents.

I prefer to have everything off the beach so I can take beach and sunset pictures without other people’s stuff in them. But it is important that Longboat Key have its own rules that apply to all so that new people, especially renters, will be held to a standard which will keep us off the “worst” list.

A Sooners ring ... 60 years later

Sixty years ago, on Dec. 1, 1956, Woody Wolverton stood on the field after his University of Oklahoma Sooners beat Oklahoma A&M 53-0 to clinch its second consecutive national championship.

“It felt joyous,” said Wolverton, who played for the Sooners from 1953 to 1956 under legendary coach Bud Wilkinson, who coached 47 consecutive victories from 1953 to 1957. “It was overwhelming. We didn’t know if we could do it or not.”

Woody Wolverton’s new national championship ring brings the University of Oklahoma’s back-toback victories full circle.

The previous year, Oklahoma beat University of Maryland 20-6 in the Orange Bowl for the national championship, and winning back-to-back titles is something Oklahoma has yet to repeat.

“In those days, we were from a dry state where all we had was six-point beer,” Wolverton said.

“So I think we celebrated by drinking beer.”

The University of Oklahoma football team continues to be one of the most successful collegiate college football programs in the history of the NCAA, and Wolverton attended a 60-year reunion at a game in September. The reunion honored the team’s 1950, 1955 and 1956 national championship seasons.

“It was quite a deal, and we were asked to go out on the field at halftime, and we were awarded rings because back in the ’50s, they didn’t give out rings,” Wolverton said. “They gave away jackets and blankets. They started giving rings in the ’60s. I’ve been asked a thousand times where my ring is, and now I finally have one.”

Ten of Wolverton’s family members attended the reunion, including some of his children and grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

“The athletic director made speeches at this big party we had,” Wolverton said. “He said, ‘You guys are the ones who started our reputation at Oklahoma.’ It was neat. It was a great time back then. It was unprecedented.”

Wolverton believes the team’s record will never be beaten.

“We were the fastest, quickest team in the nation,” he said. “On any given day, our fourth string could beat the other team’s first string.”

Football players then played

both offensive and defensive positions, and Wolverton played both center and linebacker.

“My most thrilling memory was probably when we beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame in 1956,” Wolverton said. “We beat them 40-0, and their quarterback, Paul Hornung, went on to win the Heisman that year.”

In the 60 years since he’s played, Wolverton believes football has evolved.

“I think it’s changed a lot,” he said. “Kids are bigger, faster, stronger. The equipment is more sophisticated.”

Wolverton hopes further technological advances help prevent the issue of concussions and brain damage among football players.

“One horrible thing is half of the 180 kids who played on the team with me are dead now, and half of them died of Alzheimer’s disease from getting hit in the head so much,” he said. “It’s becoming worse and worse even. Now, you’ve got a 300-pound running back coming at you that’s 6-foot4. It’s like a train rolling over you.”

Wolverton, now a financial adviser at Ameriprise Financial Services, still cheers on his Sooners and enjoys the camaraderie with other teams.

“My favorite fight song of all the schools was University of Texas,” he said. “We have rivals, but we don’t have anybody we hate. We all respect each other. It was just being part of a group of guys that loved to play football.

It’s been my life.”

The Promise With his mom’s legacy close by, entrepreneur Patrick Bismuth brings an agile approach to the crowded senior living sector.

T

he lump-in-the-throat poignancy of working with seniors who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease has been front and center in Patrick Bismuth’s business life since 2009.

It ranges from conversations with a 90-year-old woman about long-deceased love ones to buying sweatpants with a drawstring for an elderly man who struggles with incontinence.

In this work, Bismuth, a onetime IT consultant who ran his own business working with Fortune 500 companies worldwide, sees a significant business opportunity. It comes through Lily’s Promise, a residential senior care company. One five-bedroom house in Sarasota, east of Interstate 75 near Laurel Oak Country Club, opened last year. Another house in east Manatee County, in GreyHawk Landing near Lakewood Ranch, is scheduled to open later this spring. If the first two homes prove successful, Bismuth, 50, hopes to open three new homes a year in the region going forward.

Bismuth has already invested nearly $1 million of his personal savings in Lily’s Promise, mostly to buy the homes. In addition to the investment, Bismuth has also regularly confronted his biggest

obstacle: industry understanding and acceptance. Florida laws, through the Department of Elder Affairs and the Agency for Health Care Administration, oversee family care homes in private residences. The homes are maxed out at five residents per house, but otherwise follow rules for bigger competitors.

Yet the idea of a home for seniors smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood can be jarring to residents, and can also project what Bismuth calls a false sense of un-sophistication.

“There is a stigma attached with small homes that make it hard to market directly to the consumer,” Bismuth says. “They envision small homes being less professional.”

Lily’s Promise is a counterintuitive venture in multiple other ways.

Part of the model, for instance, to pay higher wages with a smaller patient-to-caregiver ratio,

runs counter to the pack-’em-in model prevalent in senior care.

Lily’s Promise also makes a point to seek out patients with a higher medical acuity, people who can be more difficult to work with.

Because of the high-end model and tougher patients, Lily’s Promise only accepts private pay residents, with no Medicare or other programs.

“We want to take the residents who fall through the cracks of assisted-living facilities,” says Bismuth. “It’s smart business, but it’s also necessary for society.”

OPEN SPACE

Another differentiating factor in Lily’s Promise is going small at all. A current senior living industry trend, particularly in memory care, is to build a series of complexes that make up a neighborhood. That replaces the old way, of building large towers that house residents in dorm-style quarters.

Either way can be costly: Construction of a senior living home runs up to $250 a square foot. Bismuth says his housing costs are considerably lower, around $120 to $130 a square foot.

But Bismuth will spend more on labor. The industry average is around 33% of revenues go toward payroll. At Lily’s Promise, says Bismuth, his labor costs are closer to 60% of revenues. The company has seven caregivers, mostly certified nursing assistants, and four managers. Bismuth, in an effort to attract top CNAs, upped the standard starting wage, from around $9.75 an hour to $10.50 an hour.

He also offers caregivers a 10% bonus for meeting work attendance and care goals.

the 2,400-square-foot house in Sarasota and $450,000 for the 3,000-square-foot house in Manatee County. He’s spent at least $100,000 more on renovations and upgrades.

The floor plan of a home is a big part of what drives the homebuying decision for the company, says Kim Brownstein, head of business development for Lily’s Promise. Open space is essential for both residents and caregivers.

“It’s nice to be able to see everything at once,” says Brownstein.

The Greyhawk Landing home, with residents expected to move in by May, is a standing example of the high-end approach Bismuth covets. The décor is Florida Keys style, with neutral colors and soft tones. The kitchen is open, with space for multiple employees to prepare meals. “The residents are spending a lot of time indoors,” Bismuth says. “So why not make it as luxurious as possible?”

Other parts of the home have been modified, to meet with industry safety codes, senior living facility regulations and common sense when working with a memory loss population.

Doorways, for example, were enlarged to make room for wheelchairs. The home also has a hightech alarm system, with a voiceactivated announcement when an unauthorized door opens. The bolt on the front door is commercial grade. The expense is a business necessity, say Lily’s Promise executives, in a niche of senior living where residents walking out unwittingly is a major worry.

areas: his entrepreneurial background and life lessons learned from his mom.

The entrepreneur side started back in his native Montreal, when a 7-year-old Bismuth went door-to-door selling boxed cereal his dad bought in bulk. He later moved to California, where he earned an MBA from UCLA’s Andersen Business School. By the time he was 28, he was running his own IT consulting business, traveling worldwide for clients. In 2000, then living in Ohio, Bismuth got into real estate and built a company that bought and rehabbed apartment complexes.

It was through that work that in 2008 Bismuth took over operations of a struggling 200unit retirement community in Columbus. He helped turn the complex around, and in doing so found a new life passion: working with elderly. He had relatives in the Sarasota area, and, with the obvious demographic lure of the region to his industry, he decided to open Lily’s Promise.

His passion, he says, also comes from his mom, Lilian Sarfati, who Bismuth says was “always more concerned for those in her care than herself.” Farsati, who didn’t suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia, died in 2012. Lily’s Promise is named after her.

Brownstein, who worked in memory care and senior living in Ohio and relocated to Florida for Lily’s Promise, visits other area senior living facilities to introduce the business. Through those relationships and other marketing efforts, Brownstein and Bismuth aim to get in front of their target audience — adults in their mid40s through mid-60s. Those are people who might have parents at a stage in life that makes them a fit for Lily’s Promise.

Another challenge, past marketing, is to create systems and processes that will save time and costs when the business expands beyond two homes. Bismuth has already begun to address that, from payroll software to grocery deliveries. Bismuth believes there’s a way to maintain the personal touch he strives for without neglecting the systems that make a bigger operation successful.

Bismuth, so far, is both the numbers guy and the one who helps out with operations, branding, hiring and everything else, down to fetching Amazon packages and mail. His mom’s legacy and his business spirit motivate him to push forward on Lily’s Promise.

“We’re excited about making a difference,” he says. “We are excited about helping people who have no other place to go.”

From the basement of the league to the top, the women’s U.S. Tennis Association 3.0 team at the Longboat Key Club is going to the state championship tournament this weekend, in Daytona Beach.

“We’ve been at or near the bottom every single year until now,” co-captain Cynthia Craig said.

“But we finally won our league this year, and it’s been an amazing team effort. We’ve gotten so much support.”

The team went 9-1 this season, which began in January. Twenty

women play on the team, and nine are going to Daytona Beach.

“It’s been a great experience,” co-captain Marcia Gutridge said.

“We have women from all over the world coming together to play on this team. Some of us didn’t even start playing tennis until we were 60.”

Although the team is proud to have qualified for the state tournament, the players also have their sights set on the national tournament in July, in Arizona.

“We’re going for the win,” Gutridge said. “We’re going for the big one.”

Rotary Club helps steer drive to end summer hunger KRISTEN HERHOLD COMMUNITY EDITOR

As Longboat Key snowbirds head north, most clear out their cabinets of food before they leave. Instead of throwing the food out, however, you can donate it to feed hungry children this summer.

The Rotary Club of Longboat Key is working with All Faiths Food Bank’s Campaign Against Summer Hunger program, which feeds children who otherwise would go hungry.

“Once school ends and summer begins, there is no way for these meal-deprived kids and their younger siblings to get food,” said Gene Luca, who, with Jane Hunter, is spearheading the Rotary Club’s involvement with the campaign.

The campaign kicked off April 1 and will run through May 15.

Last year’s campaign fed 27,000 children more than 2 million meals, and this year’s goal is to feed a total of 30,000 children.

“School ends, hunger begins,” Hunter said. “It’s important for us with the Rotary to support the school system. I believe that a lot of people on Longboat just aren’t aware that ... there’s a lot of kids who go hungry. These people are going to throw out their food anyway. Why not donate it?”

The Rotary Club picked up 700 pounds of food last year but is hoping for more this year.

GAS LEAK 12:40 p.m. — 5400 block of GMD Fire/Gas Leak: Police responded to a call about a possible natural gas leak. Firefighters were already at the scene and said there was initially a slight smell of gas near the gas marker, but the smell had disappeared.

WHO FITS THE BILL? 11:10 a.m. — 500 block of St. Judes Drive Fraud: A restaurant owner received a $50 bill that police determined was counterfeit. He said the bill came in sometime during the day, and he had no description of the suspect.

DOG GONE 8:05 p.m. — 3800 block of GMD Dog on the Beach: Police responded to a report of a dog on the beach but found no evidence of the dog.

“A lot of condos don’t allow any boxes or flyers to be put up,” Luca said. “These kind of things need board approval even though it’s for charity. We’d love for that to change and for other associations to make an exception.”

The Rotary Club of Longboat Key currently runs a food pantry at Tuttle Elementary School,

in Sarasota, on a biweekly basis, and also sponsors a backpack program that sends children home on weekends with food.

“Doing this is just an extension of some of the projects that we have been working on with Tuttle,” Luca said.

TAMPERING TROUBLES 7:52 a.m. — 400 block of GMD Suspicious Circumstance: A gas station employee called police because he suspected someone had tampered with the security tag on a pump. Police obtained two partial fingerprints but did not find any skimmer or other device on the pump. However, the day before, police found a Bluetooth cable from the same pump. Police believed whoever placed the cable attempted to remove it overnight.

Chix with Stix group knits for charity

ast winter, expert knitter Ronda Roth received requests to offer a beginner’s knitting session at her winter home at Sutton Place.

She assembled a group of interested women, who became “Chix with Stix.” At the first meeting, the group took a field trip to a local knitting supply store to pick out yarn, needles and other essentials.

“Our first project was to make

‘chemo caps,’ the headwear worn by female cancer patients who have lost their hair while undergoing chemo treatments,” Roth said. “The gals, who mostly had a little experience learning to knit from their moms and grandmas, did great, and everyone earned a diploma for the class.”

The home, called Acqua Vita — which means “water of life” in Latin — is at 5050 Gulf of Mexico Drive and held its soft opening April 15.

Five bedrooms are en suite, and the master suite has more than 2,000 square feet with a bonus room that can be a sixth bedroom.

“The idea in this house was to create areas that are very, very private,” Perrone said. “There’s a vestibule before each room, and none of the bedrooms are next door to each other. It’s the ultimate privacy.”

The house will include a fourcar garage, an elevator, a kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, an outdoor pavilion area and deeded beach access.

Sue Wolverton tackles new challenge MARK GORDON BUSINESS OBSERVER

After two decades in regional executive roles with Coldwell Banker, Sue Wolverton is ready to do something different.

But the Longboat Key resident isn’t retiring. At least not yet.

Wolverton, 67, instead, recently took a high-ranking executive position with a rival firm, Naples-based Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. At Coldwell Banker, Wolverton was the senior vice president of the Southwest Florida region, where she oversaw 950 sales associates in nearly 20 offices from Naples and Marco Island to Bradenton.

At Premier Sotheby’s, Wolverton is an executive vice president, with a focus on the Sarasota, Tampa and Orlando markets.

“I personally worked with Sue for many years and consider it our great fortune to have her on our team,” said Premier Sotheby’s President and CEO Judy Green, who made Wolverton an offer a few months ago.

The biggest challenge Wolverton faced was the actual leaving.

Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate President Clark Toole told employees and managers about her departure on a Friday in late March, after Wolverton had left.

“It was a difficult decision,” Wolverton said. “I’m extremely close with the management team and employees.”
