Richard Solorzano

So long, Solorzano After 44 years, Sands Point maintenance man Richard Solorzano has retired. The 67-year-old been with the community since 1977. He had worked at the Sarasota Kennel Club and at Columbia Restaurant on St. Armands Circle, but stuck around Sands Point for the area and the people. Solorzano was recognized at the April 9 board meeting with a bonus and gifts. “He deserves all the honors he can get,” condominium board President Julian Hansen said. “He was always there when he needed him.” Other residents showed up to the board meeting to recognize the man who has been there longer than just about any of them, though several said it was the first time they’ve seen him without his trademark hat and sunglasses.

Shells stand up to storms Bob Dreyfus, who maintains artwork of shells and beach objects by Banyan Bay Club, won’t let the wind and rain stop his creations. After years of maintaining them through early spring, Dreyfus is well-versed in brushing off the annoyance of a windblown beach. After April 11’s storms, the bottom row was washed out, but Dreyfus recovered it and brushed off the rest. He’s been working on this year’s design for months and regularly added to it. Despite Dreyfus’ careful ministrations to the shells and sand, it won’t last much longer. He’ll dismantle it by the beginning of turtle season, which starts May 1.
