‘The end of litigation’ at Colony? ROBIN HARTILL MANAGING EDITOR
Could the end of litigation surrounding the shuttered Colony Beach & Tennis Resort be near? The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association’s board will hold a telephone meeting Wednesday night to discuss negotiating a development agreement with Unicorp National Development that will “end all remaining litigation and finally put us on a firm path to redeveloping the Colony” if unit owners approve it, according to an email association
President Jay Yablon sent to unit owners Friday. Unicorp President Chuck Whittall’s offer includes a global settlement of litigation between the association, Unicorp and Colony Lender LLC, which owns a 95% interest in a 2.3-acre recreational property at the center of the 237-unit resort. His Orlando-based company seeks to build 360 units — 180 condos and 180 hotel rooms — a project he estimates will cost nearly $1 billion to complete. Unicorp is under contract to purchase Colony Lender’s resort
assets. The offer includes $31 million in compensation for unit owners. Most owners would receive $130,800 per unit, although owners of 15 midrise units would each receive an extra $100,000, and owners of 13 beachfront units would each receive an additional $200,000. Unicorp would also pay approximately $15.2 million to satisfy unit owners’ loans and pay for real estate taxes, insurance and other obligations. SEE PAGE 14A

On Feb. 19, Harold Ronson and Milton Harr, U.S. Marine Corps World War II veterans, enjoyed lunch at the Lazy Lobster. Exactly 71 years ago on that day, the men both landed on Iwo Jima, launching Operation Detachment. The ensuing five-week battle was one of the fiercest and bloodiest of the Pacific during World War II. General Manager Erick Flanagan led a toast with the entire dining room joining and giving an emotional standing ovation. “Harold and Milton had a great time,” Flanagan said. “Many guests went over, shook their hands and conversed with them. It was very touching. The staff all had chills.”
Kristin Chenoweth commends Cheryl Loeffler
When Kristin Chenoweth performed at the Van Wezel Feb. 27, she gave a special shout-out to Longboat Key resident Cheryl Loeffler. “People know me in this town as a very active Realtor or a philanthropist or through the works I do at the Ringling College as chair of the board of trustees, but very few people know my history of being a very involved mother,” Loeffler said. “When Kristin said from the stage I had produced a wonderful daughter who was a true friend, so I must be a good mother, I really appreciated it. It was great fun.” Chenoweth and Loeffler’s daughter, Samantha Brenner, spent time as children at the same ballet school in Tulsa, Okla., and have been close friends since meeting again in Los Angeles more than 10 years ago.
