Town, Ringling College announce partnership TOWN CENTER TALK

For the past eight months, Town Manager Dave Bullock and Cheryl Loeffler, chairwoman of the Ringling College of Art & Design board of trustees and Longboat Key resident, have been engaged in a not-so-secret discussion about a future Longboat Key cultural center.

But Bullock and Loeffler finally confirmed their ongoing discussions at the Longboat Key Town Commission’s regular meeting Monday night.

They announced the Jan. 29 signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ringling College President Larry Thompson and Bullock “on a partnership for the purposes of achieving various aims and objectives relating to the establishment and maintenance of a Longboat Key Art and Cultural Center.”

Bullock said the purpose of the memorandum is to provide the framework for a future contract between the town and Ringling for the cultural center.

The town will work on potential site plans for a cultural center while Ringling develops plans for building, funding and operations/ maintenance.

“This stops short of contractual negotiations but lays out the framework we can work toward,” Bullock said.

The concept calls for the town owning the future building and Ringling operating it under a long-term lease.

The center’s future spot sits

Eight months ago, talk of a future town center between Bay Isles Road and Bay Isles Parkway ceased.

That’s because Town Manager Dave Bullock received permission from the Longboat Key Town Commission in April to cancel a town center workshop, along with a design process consultant Tindale Oliver was spearheading, after hearing complaints about the process.

Bullock said he needed time to review concepts and meet privately with property owners and potential stakeholders, such as the Ringling College of Art & Design.

Bullock said the past eight months of discussions with Ringling College and other stakeholders was a worthwhile endeavor and led to the memorandum of understanding for a new cultural center.

A report by the Urban Land Institute ignited plans for a town center concept in 2013, when a panel wrote that the town was fractured and needed a town center for all residents to congregate in a central location.

between Bay Isles Road and Bay Isles Parkway on a 2.8-acre parcel behind Longboat Key Publix and SunTrust that the town purchased for $1.5 million in 2014.

Loeffler said the center will likely offer diverse art classes, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, jewelry and photography.

“It’s also possible the center could serve as a hub for lifelong learning and may include a small performance space for a variety of productions, exhibitions, film screenings and concerts,” Loeffler said.

Discussions are also ongoing about a potential partnership with the Longboat Key Education Center, but Bullock and Longboat Key Education Center Executive Director Susan Goldfarb said it’s too early to discuss ways in which

the current education center based at the Centre Shops could be incorporated into a new cultural center.

Also unknown is what the plans mean for the Longboat Key Center for the Arts in the Longbeaach Village, which is a division of Ringling College.

“It’s just too soon for comments on those issues because decisions haven’t been made yet,” Loeffler said.

The next step is for the college to draft a case statement about what the potential project and partnership would entail. That case statement will be further refined by the Longboat Key Foundation and the Ringling College Office for Advancement because there are significant opportunities for Key residents to contribute.

tunity for cultural and civic involvement,” Loeffler said. “Key residents known for contributing to arts and cultural activities on the mainland soon will have an opportunity to give back locally, and that’s exciting.”

Burglarized cars share common theme Like 84% of break-ins that occur Keywide, the 13 vehicles that were recently burglarized in the Longbeach Village had unlocked doors.

hen Michael Valentino and Laura Gomes woke up Jan. 22, they discovered both their cars had been rifled through, and they were missing approximately $10 in change. Their 8:38 a.m. call was among the first of 10 calls and reports the Longboat Key Police Department handled Jan. 22 and Jan. 23, for a total of 13 vehicle burglaries.

All of the vehicle burglaries have one common theme that frustrates Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming: Every car that was burglarized was unlocked, while other cars that were locked weren’t touched.

“Every annual report I’ve done indicates that approximately 84% of our break-ins each year are because of unlocked doors,” Cumming said. “It’s frustrating, and we ask all residents to lock their doors because it’s a simple theft deterrent.”

The report filed by Valentino and Gomes was the only one that noted a suspicious dark blue car parked on Reclinata Drive.

“My neighbor thought I had an overnight guest, and I thought he had an overnight guest,” Valentino said.

Valentino said he believes the burglar(s) were only interested in easy cash.

“I had $10,000 worth of kitesurfing equipment in the car that wasn’t even touched,” Valentino said.

Stephanie Claussen and Todd Cunningham were the first north-end residents to report that someone broke into their two vehicles.

Just before 5 a.m. Jan. 22, Cunningham heard the horn in his Ford Expedition SUV go off in their driveway.

When he went to a front window to look at his vehicle, he saw what he described to police as a “tall, lanky man” run north to the alley behind their home and disappear.

Police believe the suspect accidentally bumped the horn while rifling through the vehicle, which was missing $20 in change and had papers taken from the open glove box strewn about its interior.

Police couldn’t lift fingerprints from many vehicles because it was a rainy morning but found size 11 or 12 footprints they believe were boots leading to and from Claussen’s and Cunningham’s vehicles.

While Cumming has reported that weather events like tropical storm flooding can sometimes lead to an increase in burglaries, he doesn’t believe that’s the case with the recent crimes.

“It’s possible, but not likely in this instance,” Cumming said.

“This was a classic case of someone looking for easy cash.”

All 13 cars that were burglarized had papers from glove boxes scattered through the interiors and were missing loose change under $50 and some other miscellaneous items.

Longboat Key Sgt. Detective Robert Bourque said he is following up on some “loose leads” and has been unable to find the suspicious dark blue car that Valentino reported seeing through the license plate camera recognition cameras.

A few latex prints were also lifted from vehicles later reported as burglarized over the next two days and are being analyzed.

Police also obtained a key chain and key labeled for a bank safety deposit box that the owner claimed didn’t belong to him in one of the cars that was burglarized. But that key later was discovered stolen from one of the other cars and was dropped by the suspect in another burglarized vehicle.

One police report also states that video footage obtained from a neighbor reveals a “tall man, wearing possibly shorts and dark shoes and a hoodie-type jacket that was concealing his head and face” walking toward a Lexus in the 6500 block of Bayou Hammock Road before disappearing from the video. The unlocked Lexus was burglarized, and a letter the suspect touched in the car was processed for fingerprints.

A Mercedes-Benz car parked across the street from the Lexus was locked and was not burglarized.

Another resident on Longboat Drive South informed police he believes his former lawn service man could be involved in the burglaries.

Bourque believes all break-ins occurred Jan. 22.

“We’re asking all residents to call us if they see anything suspicious and to please lock their cars,” Bourque said.

A home at 3475 Gulf of Mexico Drive closed this week for $7 million, the highest price paid for a home on Longboat Key in nearly five years.

The five-bedroom, five-anda-half bath home was built last year and has 7,586 square feet.

“The home has a water view in every room, which you can’t find many other places,” said Gabe Buky, of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate’s the Buky Team, which also includes his son, Charles.

The home was designed by architect Mark Sultana and built

by Voigt Brothers Construction.

The sellers of the house were businessmen Joseph Acebal and Rick Mikles.

The home features 150 feet of beachfront access and has a sixcar garage, game room, exercise room, an elevator and a walk-in wine cellar that holds 500 bottles. The house was sold fully furnished and was originally listed for $7,395,000 in October.

Lori Cashi, also of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, represented the buyers, a family from Wisconsin.

“It’s so private and beautiful,” Cashi said. “It’s very contemporary and streamlined and was the perfect floor plan for a large family.”

It was the largest sale on the Key since April 2011, when the home at 825 Longboat Club Road sold for $12.5 million.

Is the Colony ‘the place to be?’

Is it possible that the shuttered Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, which has been closed for more than five years, is now a popular hangout spot for a new — and younger — clientele?

A Jan. 24 Longboat Key Police Department incident report states that four juveniles admitted to attempting to enter the closed resort after an anonymous caller reported the group crawled under the fence at the front of the property at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Police observed a smashed door at the south entrance of the midrise building that’s in need of structural repairs and contaminated with black mold.

They found two males and two females walking southbound on Gulf of Mexico Drive to Aquarius Club, where they had parked and claimed they were visiting a friend.

When they couldn’t provide the name of the Aquarius owner they said they were visiting, they admitted they were going to the Colony to “hang out” but said they never made it inside because police arrived.

The report states: “They further advised that it (the Colony) is known to many juveniles in Sarasota as a place to go and ‘hang out.’”

Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming, though, said he doubts the Colony is a popular hangout spot for Sarasota’s youth.

“That place is completely fenced and secured by locks,” Cumming said. “The juveniles made statements we don’t have any evidence for.”

Sue Klauber, wife of longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber, is worried about the recent break-in.

“If they’re in the midrise building, they’re breathing that terrible air, and that’s a serious concern,” Klauber said. “There’s serious mold in there, and I wish people understood how dangerous that building is.”

Klauber said she also heard from an Aquarius resident who saw people standing on the midrise building’s roof not long ago.

Cumming, though, said there have been no reports of any other issues or break-ins at the property since the Jan. 24 incident.

“I sure wish people would call the Police Department if they see criminal activity at the resort, like people standing on roofs,” Cumming said. “My advice is to call the police.”

Cumming said his department “is ramping up patrolling” in the area and at the Colony because of the recent incident.

In the more than five years since it closed, police have recorded 88 incidents at the Colony.

A fight over landscaping left one resident in the pool and another facing possible battery charges.

The video appears to show Tatreau hitting Gray with his forearm, knocking him to the ground.

The video then shows Gray getting up and punching Tatreau in the face. Additional punches follow. There’s more scuffling before Tatreau apparently delivers a final blow, sending Gray sprawling and splashing backward into a newly installed swimming pool in his backyard.

“There’s no question he came onto our property and assaulted my husband,” Ruth Gray said.

“Bob had a right to defend himself.”

Christopher Tatreau’s wife, Cheryl, told the Longboat Observer Monday that she and her husband decline to comment.

Gray described himself as “absolutely dumbfounded.”

A fistfight in the backyard of Bob and Ruth Gray’s home at 791 Broadway led Bob Gray to pursue battery charges against his neighbor, Christopher Tatreau.

as back pain. Tatreau sustained a black eye to his left side and a swollen and bruised face, according to the incident report.

The report states that the Grays were having landscaping work done around a newly constructed swimming pool in their backyard when Tatreau began yelling about landscaping trucks blocking the alley between Broadway and Russell streets, preventing him from getting home.

The Grays insist that trucks never completely blocked the alley for any period of time.

Gray wants Tatreau prosecuted

for battery, and the incident report states “the video corresponds to both the victim and the suspect’s accounts of the incident.” At press time, charges against Tatreau had not been filed, according to the Manatee County Clerk of the Court’s website.

The Grays and the landscaping company that took the video of the fight on a cellphone declined to provide footage. Deputy Chief Frank Rubino said the video can’t be released until the state attorney’s office reviews the case and the video evidence and decides whether to press charges in the

coming weeks.

Village resident Shirley Beachum said news of the brawl “spread like wildfire” in the community.

“Only on Longboat Key,” Beachum said. “We heard about it at a board meeting and couldn’t believe it.”

Gray said he is in remission from lung cancer and has a pacemaker.

“This is the last thing I needed,” Gray said. “I came down here to retire and relax and enjoy paradise. Not to throw punches in my backyard.”

North-end residents have been waiting to raise a glass once again at a watering hole in Whitney Beach Plaza since 2010, when Tiny’s of Longboat closed.

But after five years and countless rumors, the plaza is finally ready to celebrate the opening of Giacamo’s Bar and Lounge this Super Bowl Sunday.

Owner Ryan Lugo has been working since 2014 to open the bar. Dr. Giacamo “Jack” Guggino, owner/founder of Tampa-based Giacamo’s Cigars, is no longer a partner, but his cigars are being offered at the bar as he, Lugo and an undisclosed co-owner work out what Lugo hopes is a longterm agreement for future bars.

A soft opening for the bar is scheduled for Friday night, and the first official opening day is Sunday, Feb. 7. Hours are noon to 2 a.m. daily. Super Bowl specials are still being worked out, Lugo said.

The 1,500-square-foot bar, located where the former Tiny’s liquor store operated, with 65 seats has what Lugo calls “a rustic look that reminds me of a classic wine bar while also making you feel like you’re hanging out in your dad’s man cave watching the game.”

The bar will have five high-definition televisions and 15 beers on tap. Although obtaining a liquor license is still an eventual goal,

Longbeach Café, a breakfast and lunch eatery at Whitney Beach Plaza, is now offering dinner from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

Longbeach Café co-owner Colleen Collandra said six dinner entrees are available in addition to the lunch menu.

Lugo, a former deejay and record producer, has never run a bar or restaurant. He announced a plan for a future pizzeria and separate cigar bar smoking area two years ago and said those concepts are still in the works.

Lugo said he’s negotiating lease space for an additional 1,600 square feet (the site of the former Tiny’s bar) with half of that space taking up Giacamo’s Pizzeria in the front and the other half in the back taking up a cigar lounge.

Lugo also hopes to obtain outdoor dining seats from the town for an outdoor beer garden.

Lugo declined to disclose the amount of money he and Giacamo have invested in the bar but said the amount “is in the six figures.”

Longbeach Village resident and former Tiny’s patron Shirley Beachum said many residents are excited to hop back on bar stools at Whitney Beach Plaza.

“Everyone has been waiting for so long to get a bar back in the area,” Beachum said. “I’ll raise a glass there when it happens, and I think a lot of other people will, too.”

Lugo is hopeful many Tiny’s regulars come and check out the new watering hole.

“When we talked to local residents, we discovered the old bar was a real piece of history,” Lugo said. “This is about bringing back a piece of that history and making new memories.”

CHANGE THE LIGHTS TO RED

Classic: Longboat residents are worried someone will be killed at the new crosswalks.

But rather than change yellow lights to red, the state wants to conduct forums.

Ever since the now-infamous crosswalks have been installed on Gulf of Mexico Drive, one of the conversations you hear from just about every Longboat Key resident is how the yellow flashing lights at the crosswalks need to be converted to red.

Every driver understands red. It means stop. Yellow lights, we are all taught, mean caution, slow down.

They don’t mean stop.

Simple thing to fix, right?

But the Florida Department of Transportation’s Bicycle/ Pedestrian Safety Specialist David Jones told the Longboat Key Town Commission the all-knowing, all-governing state requires certain criteria must be met before the state will replace the yellow lights with red lights.

One of those criteria is whether there are enough pedestrians to warrant the change.

This is idiotic.

When our own Commissioner Lynn Larson tested one of the crosswalks recently, she said about 10 cars from either direction drove through the yellow flashing lights before motorists finally figured out they were to stop for pedestrians.

So how does FDOT propose to fix this problem? With “WalkWise” educational forums.

That is a joke. It’s one thing to try

to educate all of Longboat Key’s residents how the new crosswalks work.

But it is completely unrealistic to think the FDOT’s WalkWise forums are going to attract hordes of motorists who use Gulf of Mexico Drive as a pass-through to and from Sarasota and Bradenton to sit through a crosswalk safety forum. Not to mention the thousands of tourists who come from around the world.

Save the time and money producing the forums.

Just change the color of the plastic shielding the lights from orange to red. Or better yet: Install a traditional red flashing light and a sign that says stop for pedestrians. Problem solved.

Some lawyers probably would argue otherwise, but commissioners committed a taking.

It was an egregious example of legislative overreach. Don’t be surprised if Petland Sarasota owner Brad Parker will soon be standing before commissioners seeking his just compensation.

TRAFFIC JAMS

On Monday, a caller around noon to the Longboat Observer commented on his cellphone that he was creeping ever so slowly toward the Cortez Bridge, coming from Bradenton to Longboat Key. Traffic, as usual at this time of year, was backed up at the Gulf Drive-Cortez Bridge stoplight in Bradenton Beach.

This past Saturday and Sunday, traffic lines stretched from the Gulfstream Avenue-John Ringling Causeway intersection all the way into St. Armands Circle at midmorning and vice versa at late afternoon, thanks to an art festival on St. Armands. Traffic also backed up at Fruitville and Tamiami Trail.

Drives that typically take five minutes took 30 minutes or more.

Inexplicable is why none of the municipalities, the Florida Highway Patrol or Department of Transportation ever assigns officers to improve the flow of traffic.

It’s like the change of seasons. We all know at this time of year traffic is going to back up on the bridges leading to and from the barrier islands.

You would think, then, government officials might — just might — be able to think like private-sector business operators and plan for such events.

At Christmastime, retailers and package shippers — to keep their customers happy and coming back — increase their employee counts to handle the increase in volumes of sales and shipping. Why can’t government do the same?

It would be unreasonable, of course, to expect traffic cops to eliminate backups. There clearly are more cars than street capacity at those times. But surely traffic officers could improve the flow.

Tuesday’s speeches were defining moments We can’t ignore it …

A 32-minute speech? … It was only Iowa.

OK, Sen. Ted Cruz won the Iowa Republican caucuses, jumping over the Donald, while, to little surprise, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio far outdistanced the pack of establishment-dubbed Republican governors.

All the experts say there is still a long way to go; that New Hampshire will be different; and the South different still. So don’t jump to conclusions.

Nonetheless, the speeches of the top three Republicans were as telling as all of the speeches they’ve made heretofore and clearly define the Republicans’ top three: “To God be the glory,” Cruz began, stroking his evangelical benefactors. At the same time, you could not ignore that he projected a combativeness that has tapped the vein of frustrated Americans. He appeared to relish rebuking his list of bad guys

— the media, the Washington Establishment and the lobbyists.

“Tonight,” he said, “is a victory for millions of Americans who have shouldered the burden of seven years of Washington deals run amok. Tonight is a victory for every American who has watched in dismay as career politicians from both parties refused to listen and failed to keep their commitments to the American people.”

Remember, it was only Iowa.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, actually seemed humbled, an energy notch lower. But still a great spinner. “I love you people. I love you people. I absolutely love the people of Iowa. Unbelievable.

Unbelievable … I was told by everybody you could never finish even in the top 10. But I have friends in Iowa. I know a lot of people in Iowa. I think they really like me …”

And then there was Marco Rubio. In 12 minutes, he delivered what sounded to be his nomina-

tion acceptance speech, an ode whose tone pinched emotions and carried a Kennedy-esque call to all, not just Republicans.

“In America, there are only two ways forward for us now: We can be greater than we’ve been, or we can be a nation in decline … Now the moment has arrived for this generation of Americans to rise up to the calling of our heritage. Now the time has come for us to take our place and do what we must … When our work is done, here is what history will say of this generation … We rose up to the challenge of our time.”

If history is a guide of how voters will go, you can detect in these three speeches a likely outcome for the Republicans.

Oh, the Democrats. Bernie Sanders, socialist, reinforced what everyone already knew.

Hillary Clinton’s coronation as the Democrat nominee won’t be regal.

That is, if it happens at all.

In August 2013, the Longboat Key Police Department activated Automated License Plate Reader cameras (ALPRs), adding a new dimension to enforcing laws and preventing crime through automation.

This technology assists law enforcement agencies in detection, identification and recovery of stolen vehicles, wanted persons, missing and/ or endangered children/adults and persons who have committed serious and violent crimes. It can also assist in developing and pursuing leads in criminal investigations and locating suspects, witnesses and victims by identifying vehicles in the vicinity at the time of a crime.

ALPRs scan, capture and compare optical license plate information to vehicles associated with crimes or criminals.

Within seconds, a match results in an alert notifying the patrol officer of all relevant information necessary for the officer to take action. ALPRs also store the digital image of the license plate and vehicle, and the time, date and location

Although ALPRs can scan more than 3,000 plates per hour, the system only generates alerts on license plates that match the criteria, ignoring plates not associated with a crime.

From July 1, 2015 through Dec. 31, 2015, the system produced alerts on 24,800 license plates crossing the field of cameras. This represents an average of 2,066 monthly or

66.6 alerts per 24-hour period.

These alerts indicate violations associated with the registration of the vehicles passing the cameras. The nature of these violations was as follows: n 4,397 expired drivers licenses; n 6,325 expired license plates; n 11,057 suspended drivers licenses; n 2,555 alerts related to state and national notifications;

ALPR technology has been accepted as admissible evidence in Florida courts and has become an important tool in fighting crime nationally.

Longboat Key detectives rely on ALPR technology for investigations involving burglaries, thefts and other serious crimes.

In these cases, ALPR databases are used to determine whether the image of the suspect’s license plates had been captured entering and leaving the island during the timeframe under investigation.

To date, ALPR evidence collected in more a dozen investigations have successfully led to prosecution and conviction in every case, and the recovery of stolen property valued in excess of $100,000.

Bayfront Park bridge matters to many Longboaters The Jan. 14 issue of the Longboat Observer neglected to mention the bridge group that meets and plays at Bayfront Park Recreation Center every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Larry Auerbach directs the games that provide a great service to those duplicate bridge players who do not want to fight the traffic into Sarasota.

Auerbach has been providing this service to Longboaters for the many years in which I have owned here.

I expect that there will be appropriate plans in place to accommodate the needs of all the people who enjoy Bayfront Park and its recreation center.

Now, to a retired CEO or VP, $826 might not mean much, but if just one person has to sell or move out because of this unreasonable assessment, that is one person too many.

Therefore, my opinion: LBK seems to be for millionaires only.

Referendum is taxation without representation As a taxpayer and resident of Longboat Key for several years, I am extremely upset with the recent decisions the Town Commission has made regarding the underground power lines.

I live in Spanish Main Yacht Club and was already annoyed when the first vote was scheduled at a time when many residents were not here. (No doubt, this was deliberate.) But the evaluation process of EBUs (equivalent benefit units), where most people benefit equally from the main lines on Gulf of Mexico Drive, seemed somewhat reasonable.

However, this second vote and the manner in which it is being determined is simply outrageous. I attended the very long meeting Jan. 4, sat through hours of speakers from the north end making very reasonable observations about the inequity of this proposal only to have members of the board

smile, say thank you and proceed exactly as they intended.

The Jan. 14 issue of the Longboat Observer did an excellent job of laying out the problem. The disproportion of Manatee and Sarasota voters is bad enough, but there are even more taxpayers in equal disproportion, who do not even have a vote on the proposal.

Ladies and gentlemen, 300 years ago, our young nation went to war with England over this. It is taxation without representation. Do we need another revolution? Or perhaps the Manatee portion of Longboat Key should secede from the Sarasota portion of the island, where there would be a more equal distribution of votes.

We are being asked to pay almost 80% of the cost for this second proposal due to the manner in which you are determining the individual cost. Spanish Main already had all of its lines underground, but you are charging us for aboveground installation.

A $6 million mansion will, by your codes, pay a mere $500, while our homes valued at less than $350,000 are being assessed at nearly $5,000 each, and there are 212 of us. There are other Manatee residents who will be assessed $10,000 or more.

This is madness. It will cause these home values to depreciate, become unsellable and certainly force some residents who live on reduced incomes to flee. Do we need the north end to become another Colony eyesore?

Haven’t any of you learned from all the businesses fleeing the island? Stores and services have left Longboat in droves.

The north end still looks like a ghost town.

I, for one, hope you can’t get the $25 million bond, and the whole thing can fall apart. But I am afraid we are simply a voice crying in the wind.

County erred in excluding rabbits from pet sale ordinance

It was a mistake for Sarasota County commissioners to delete rabbits from their recent retail pet store ban on the sale of dogs and cats. The usual and original ordinance prohibits the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits.

Rabbits are very sweet and social animals but are very fragile and high maintenance.

I have been a rabbit owner for more than 20 years now and spent several years as a volunteer with the NYC Rabbit Rescue.

There is a new trend for communities to ban the retail store sale of pet dogs, cats and rabbits in favor of adoption from rescue groups.

The exclusion of rabbits in Sarasota County is a direct blow to the species and to all the very hard-working rabbit rescue groups.

Unfortunately, people in Orlando are now trying to

mimic the Sarasota ban put in place with dogs and cats only.

In retail pet shops, rabbits are sold for live food for snakes and are always sold not spayed or neutered. In pet stores, there is zero screening of what kind of situation they are going to.

Rabbits that are not spayed or neutered are prone to relentless territorial spraying of urine, and females are at high risk of uterine cancer.

They breed extremely quickly, and due to these avoidable behaviors, they often get dumped quickly in the streets, where they have no protection, or in overburdened rescues.

Rabbits are the third most common house pet in America, often bought on a whim, like a toy.

I have reached out to the 501(c)3 House Rabbit Society asking them to get involved to try to stop this horrific error trending.

I am hoping the public will understand, and future efforts will also protect them.

Pet rabbits should be adopted and not bought in stores.

The Surf Ballroom held 2,100 guests in the town of Clear Lake, Iowa, home to fewer than 5,000 people.

It was Feb. 2, 1959, and Longboat Key resident Alan Mitchell, then 15, was attending a Buddy Holly concert with his girlfriend, Donna. He was a Holly fan; she liked the song with which she shared a name, “Donna.”

The next morning would mark a tragic moment in music history, when Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were killed in a plane crash on the way to Moorhead, Minn., the next stop in their Winter Dance Party tour. It became known as the day the music died.

“At the time, you don’t know you’re at a historical event,” said Mitchell, now 72. “It’s my accidental claim to rock ‘n’ roll history. At the time, it was just another fun time at the Surf.”

Mitchell didn’t learn about the plane crash until the morning after the concert.

“I came to school, and everybody was in the cafeteria crying,” Mitchell said. “They pulled out the newspapers, and it said the three rock ‘n’ roll singers died.

Television would cover it later that day, but back then, there was no way to find out more other than that article.”

“The real impact of it hit 20 years later,” Mitchell said. “With (Don McLean’s) ‘American Pie,’ it was probably when I really began to understand the depth of that day and its significance to the history of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Mitchell eventually became a deejay in Chicago.

without a license,” he said. “I was already on that path, so this particular night didn’t push my interest, but this fit right in.”

In 2009, Mitchell attended the 50th anniversary of the concert at the Surf, when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dedicated the ballroom as a historical rock ‘n’ roll landmark. He and his date, Donna, were both on a panel of those who were there at the final concert.

“It was a very unique experience because the two of us stood in the exact same spot we had been 50 years ago, watching a recreation of that night,” Mitchell said. “There was a momentary feeling of wondering if this is 1959 or 2009.”

Last month, the musical “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” was performed at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. There will be a Buddy Holly-themed concert in Venice at the end of February.

“It’s been 57 years, and Buddy Holly still lives on,” Mitchell said.

“I just went to a concert and ended up going to something that was incredibly significant to the history of popular music.”

SCAT (Sarasota County Area Transit) and MCAT (Manatee County Area Transit) work together to provide bus transportation on Longboat Key approximately every hour from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The most affordable option featured at Transportation Awareness Day, a single ride fare is $1.25 for both MCAT and SCAT. Those older than 60 pay 75 cents on MCAT and 60 cents on SCAT, and those older than 80 ride both MCAT and SCAT for free.

“We can take you as far north as Palmetto and as far south as North Port,” SCAT Chief Executive Rocky Burke said. “You can take it down to St. Armands and do your shopping and go to Lido or, of course, Sarasota.”

Phyllis Dworkin, 95, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key, died Jan. 28.

She grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Goucher College in 1941 and married Albert in 1942.

After initially living in Manhattan, N.Y., they settled and raised their family in Roslyn, N.Y. In 1986, they moved to Longboat Key, where they spent many of their happiest years.

Mrs. Dworkin was an active volunteer in her community and a lifelong Democrat.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, 99; son, Peter, of San Francisco, five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Richard Erickson, 83, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 25.

Born June 7, 1932, in Winthrop, Minn., Mr. Erickson attended country school and graduated from the local high school in 1951. As a youth, the Erickson siblings were expected to help with chores on the family farm, a time during which he developed his lifelong enthusiasm for hunting and fishing.

After serving in the U.S. Army as a supply sergeant in Puget Sound, Wash., he joined his brother Clif’s territory in Michigan in 1955 and went to work as a school photographer for National School Studios, a precursor to Lifetouch. He also enrolled in Michigan State University, where he met his wife and love of his life, Nancy.

His solid work ethic earned him his own territory in 1960, which eventually became one of the most profitable in the company at the time. In 1972, he was invited to join the Lifetouch corporate management team in Minneapolis.

Mr. Erickson spent his entire career at Lifetouch, one that spanned six decades, encompassing all facets of management. He integrated the company’s first acquisitions and gave unwavering support to the development of an innovative camera system that in 2011 was inducted into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. He was a major force in Lifetouch becoming an employee-owned company, and he served as president and CEO, and later, as chairman of the

Fanny Grossman died Jan. 17.

Mrs. Grossman was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Grossman, and her son, Gerald Grossman.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Alan Schottenstein, of Longboat Key; son and daughter-inlaw, Mark and Barbara Grossman; daughter-in-law Judith Grossman Lazarus; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service took place in Montreal.

Though he retired as board chairman in 2002, Mr. Erickson remained an active board presence within Lifetouch until recently. He completed the executive education program at the University of Minnesota, now the Carlson School of Management. He was recognized

by Photo Marketing Association International for his contributions to the industry and was a member of the Minnesota Business Partnership and a past president of the Professional School Photographers Association.

Richard and Nancy Erickson spent their summers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. They established the Erickson Center for the Arts in Mrs. Erickson’s childhood hometown of Curtis, Mich., to serve as an epicenter for the artistic, educational and cultural pursuits of community members.

Mr. Erickson was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; brothers, Clif and Douglas Erickson; and sister, Meridee Erickson McCray. He is survived by his daughter, Marcy Justice; son, Stuart Erickson; four grandchildren; brothers, Roger and Curt Erickson; brother-in-law Fred Gowan; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 3, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Road, Edina, Minn.

Longboat Key resident Michael Hunter won this year’s raffle grand prize, a trip for two to New York City Fashion Week, including airfare, accommodations, theater, dinner and shopping money.

“It was just a terrific surprise,” Hunter said.

“That never happens to me. I bought a ticket at the last minute, and lo and behold, it was a winning one. What a nice thing it was for Team Renick to have donated this prize.”

Hunter will take his wife, Susan, on the trip.
