Ringing reminder Mary Drugan is dedicating her daily walks to fitness and — even though she’s on foot — bike safety. After close calls with sidewalk cyclists, the Longboat Key resident made a drawstring backpack she carries on walks with the message “Please ring your bell” for cyclists coming up behind her to see. Drugan hopes to draw awareness to the fact that signaling fellow sidewalk users is not only courteous but also a town law. “We’re all sharing, and you have to consider your neighbors,” Drugan said. “It’s an accident waiting to happen.” So far, Drugan has made another bag for a neighbor and is planning to restock her supplies to make more as requested.

New way to cross As renovation work continues on the New Pass Bridge, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to use the protected sidewalk on the west side of the span. Structural, mechanical and electrical work on the drawbridge is expected to continue until summer on the structure built in 1986. Traffic will maintain two lanes, but shifts are already in place. The sidewalk on the Gulf side of the bridge is protected by a wall. Total cost of the project is about $2.8 million.
