Myrtle’s day out Save Our Seabirds hosted a Sip and Shop at J. McLaughlin on Feb. 11. Although the event wasn’t unusual in itself, one of the volunteers was new to the situation. A tiny Eastern screech owl was among those educating people about the work the organization does. Minuscule Myrtle was the star of the Sip and Shop. She was a little grumpy at being away from home, said Operations and Outreach Manager Jessica Caryll, but when interested passersby stopped or cameras came out, she was happy to preen in the sunshine. She brought inquisitive observers over to the table, and her human counterparts were happy to give out stickers and information to those who stopped by to shop. Caryll said plenty of foot traffic came by from Publix visitors and those who had come from the Market on Longboat Key. Myrtle has been an up-toscratch mascot for Save Our Seabirds for years, for she is one of its permanent residents.

Changing of the guard The Longboat Harbour Condominium complex hosted its annual Change of Watch ceremony recently to swear in officers of the complex at 4454 Gulf of Mexico Drive. “We all wear our little captain’s hats and our yacht club shirts, and so we have 15 minutes of formal stuff, and the rest is all having fun,” condo commodore Bill Coughlin said. Coughlin said Longboat Harbour has hosted many of its recent events outdoors, with an average of about 130 attendees. He said the boater camaraderie is a huge aspect of living in Longboat Harbour. “Most yacht clubs are kind of formal, and we’re not,” Coughlin said. Coughlin has served as the condo’s commodore for years. “The party was great,” Coughlin said. “I mean, we had 120 little bottles of wine, and those were gone.”

It’s not uncommon for the three regulation pickleball courts and two temporary courts on one of the tennis surfaces to be in use simultaneously at Bayfront Park.
