The WrightWay to save an event
AT LAWN LAST Kiwanis Club’s big event a big hit on the grass. PAGE 16
The Kiwanis Lawn Party on Dec. 4 could have easily turned into the Swamp Party if not for the work of sponsor WrightWay Emergency Services. In the days before the Lawn Party, the Town Center Green was more damp than it should’ve been in preparation for 800 people. An irrigation line that had been inadvertently stabbed was the culprit, and Darrin Caldwell and his WrightWay team worked to remove 300 gallons of water from the green Dec. 2. And another organization came to the rescue, as its name implies: Lawn Party Chairman Michael Garey was a couple restaurants short of his goal, so before the party, he reached out to the Longboat Key FireRescue Department. They agreed to serve up their Red Tide chili, which was a hit throughout the day.

It takes a village
Michael Drake remembers the days when the Longbeach Village had a beautification committee. “We had quite a few committees, actually,” Drake said. On Nov. 12, Drake was among a group of nine Longbeach Village residents who spruced up the vegetation near the neighborhood’s welcome sign on Broadway Street just east of Palm Drive. “Long story short, I had done that same thing about 12-14 years ago,” Drake said. “A group of us redid it, and it hasn’t been really touched since then.” Village residents Casey Lamb, Becky Parrish, Benny Parrish, Carla Rowan, Pete Rowan, JoAnn Schwencke, Tony Roberts and Patti Lopez, though not exactly a committee, joined Drake to help improve the area around the Village entrance sign. “It brought the old memories back, certainly for those of us that have been there for a while,” Drake said. “But even the newbies that were basically helping out, it just brings in the spirit of a community and neighborhood.”
