YOUR TOWN Anonymous givers save day
Four days after Longboat Key Mayor Jack Duncan resigned his District 2 seat following a quadruple bypass, the Town Commission on Monday selected his replacement. Vice Mayor Terry Gans was voted in unanimously to succeed Duncan. “I appreciate the confidence of my fellow commissioners,” Gans said. Commissioner-elect George Spoll was sworn in to fill the District 2 commissioner vacancy left by Duncan’s resignation. Spoll was nominated to be mayor, too, but “respectfully declined” in favor of Gans. Commissioner Phill Younger was voted in to succeed Gans as vice mayor on a 5-2 vote. All officials named Monday will serve until their replacements are chosen in the March election. The 67-year-old Duncan addressed his resignation letter dated Dec. 1 to Gans and the Longboat Key Town Commission.
Michael Garey’s daughter Alex made a 16-page booklet for the Kiwanis Club Gourmet Lawn Party highlighting the 32 participating restaurants and explaining what the club does with the money raised. On Dec. 2, Garey went to pick up the 800 booklets only to see the pages printed out of order. Garey reached out to an anonymous couple asking if they would help pay to have the booklets reprinted. They said yes, and the booklets made it to the lawn party on time.
