Pick of the parish
When Mary Elizabeth Carey asked how many of the more than 100 St. Mary, Star of the Sea, parishioners knew the late Rev. Edward Pick, nearly every hand went up. “He had a best friend in so many of you,” Carey said. “There’s not much I need to do to bring him into this room.” On Dec. 8, the 48th anniversary of the church that Pick founded, Carey did her best to summarize the life and impact of the man who was known to be gruff at times but also to always be kind and have a dog with him. She read from a speech he gave more than 10 years ago on the 50th anniversary of his ordainment. Pick died in March 2020 at the age of 86, and the parish had not had the chance to celebrate his life yet, so they took the opportunity on the church’s anniversary to come together and share a meal and their best memories.

Caroled away on St. Armands Circle
No easy solution
Beach access issues hard to solve.. SEE PAGE 3 Mark Bergin
With new sand in front of the seawall at the Longbeach Condominiums at 7065 Gulf of Mexico Drive, beachgoers now have a place to navigate around the private property.
Silver bells and Christmas carols are some of the most iconic sounds of the season, and on Dec. 9, St. Armands Circle was alive with both. Songs on the Circle, a summer event in which buskers set up music around the Circle, came back with a Christmassy twist. The main music event was close to the St. Armands Key Lutheran Church Salvation Army bell ringers. Ernest Collins set up a piano keyboard and speaker and caroled the night away. He said it was his first time playing on the Circle and that he was enjoying the evening. As night fell, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” could be heard from several spokes.
