Toys for Tots closes Dec. 11
Cars are parked on the street along Broadway in the Longbeach Village neighborhood.
The deadline to donate to the town’s Toys for Tots drive is Friday. Toys, books and other new, unwrapped gifts suitable for children are accepted at two drop-off locations: Town Hall at 501 Bay Isles Road and the police department at 5460 Gulf of Mexico Drive. “I love the holiday, so it’s nice to see people in the giving spirit,” said Michelle Lowe, the town clerk’s office administrative assistant. Anyone dropping off a donation is required to wear a face mask inside Town Hall. No toys that resemble weapons or food items are accepted.

Floridian finalist
Longboat Key’s Mary Lou Johnson became a finalist in the 2020 American Book Fest for her recent photography book, “The Lure of Sarasota and Her Islands.” The book, Johnson’s second, broadens the artist’s focus from Longboat Key, which her first book featured. Johnson takes photos of the area’s landscapes and edits them herself, sometimes also adding a bit of digital painting. There were more than 2,000 entries across all the fest’s categories, and those were narrowed down to about 400 finalists, according to a news release from the American Book Fest.
