SILVER PLATTER As Mike Gowan and Mike Quillen look toward the future, their strategy shifts to the land beneath their restaurants.

The acquisition of the Dry Dock a year ago is a perfect example.

Mike Quillen remembers the days, sometimes wistfully, when he and his longtime friend and business partner, Mike Gowan, ran their fledgling restaurant business out of their trucks.

That was in 1992.

Now closing in on 25 years in business, Sarasota-based Gecko’s Hospitality Group long ago outgrew its gritty startup days. The company has six locations under its flagship Gecko’s name, plus three other restaurants under other brand names and one bar and package store.

The company has more than

500 employees, making it one of the largest privately held companies in the Sarasota-Bradenton region.

“That’s what I’m most proud of,” said Gowan. “We have given a lot of people a lot of opportunities.”

Gowan and Quillen also have been given a lot of opportunities — from restaurant owners across the area.

Some want to get out of the industry, others want to be part of the community-service minded business model Gowan and Quillen have refined over the years.

The duo fields calls at least once a week for potential partnerships or acquisitions.

The partners recently bit on two calls. One, in October 2015, was to buy the Dry Dock Waterfront Grill, a mainstay on Longboat Key since 1989. A second, in April, was for Marker 4 in Venice, part of the Fisherman’s Wharf Marina complex. The company rebranded Marker 4 as Dockside Waterfront Grill, and it kept the name the same for the Dry Dock on Longboat.

Quillen, 57, and Gowan, 58, decline to discuss terms of the deals, only to say being on the water was a big factor.

“When you have an opportunity to buy something on the water you have to pounce on it,” Quillen said. “They aren’t making any more of it.”

Gowan, a Sarasota native, and Quillen, who moved to town with his family was a young boy, met when they were 10, and have been good friends since.

In 1992, they opened the first Gecko’s, in the Landings, a commercial plaza about five miles south of downtown Sarasota. The partners, with a $120,000 loan from Quillen’s dad, wanted to make the debut Gecko’s a friendly, neighborhood Cheers-like place.

Fifteen-hour workdays were the norm for the first few years, and they worked on everything from menus to supplies to setting up weekly bingo games.

Growth since then has come every four years. A second store came in 1998 and a third store in 2002. Those locations are in Manatee County. A fourth Gecko’s, on Clark Road in Sarasota, debuted in 2006. Locations five and six came in 2010 and 2014, respectively.

In 2013, they launched another concept, S’macks Burgers & Shakes. While Gecko’s offers table service, S’macks is in the

fast-growing quick-service segment. The first S’macks is on Bee Ridge Road, near U.S. 41. A second planned S’macks, in downtown Sarasota, is part of a mixeduse project that broke ground in September.

EXPANSION STRATEGY

Gowan and Quillen are driven to do deals and expand not only by the restaurant’s potential, but also by the possibility of owning the land. They’ve financed purchases with their own money and bank loans, working with a small handful of local community banks.

The land holdings portfolio the pair controls includes the S’macks on Bee Ridge Road; the Red Barn Bar, also on Bee Ridge; a Gecko’s on Fruitville Road and a Gecko’s on Hillview Road; and the Dry Dock on Longboat Key. The pair paid $1.8 million for the Fruitville Road Gecko’s in 2014, according to property records, and it paid about $500,000 for the S’macks location, a former gas station.

Buying land in addition to the eatery is counterintuitive to bigger restaurants chains, where the strategy is to put money into the locations, not the dirt.

“You obviously tie up a lot of capital,” Quillen says. “If you are going to open 20 locations one after the other it doesn’t make sense.”

But Gowan and Quillen, thinking about the time far off into the future when they aren’t in the restaurant business anymore, want to have something else tangible. That’s why land is a focus of deals.

“We want to have something we own besides the restaurants,” Quillen said.

he roof is ready.

And it’s a major component of the $2 million renovation of the Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub in the Longbeach Village.

“It’s a big milestone considering we went through a tropical storm and a hurricane,” said project manager Mark Anderson, a seven-year veteran with Chiles Restaurant Group, which owns Mar Vista.

Anderson was referring to named storms Hermine and Matthew, which opened and closed September, respectively.

Anderson said the fact the project, which began Aug. 3, remains on track to complete its first phase in January is a tribute to general contractor Whitehead Construction of Cortez. Anywhere from six to 20 tradesmen have been employed at the job site, dependent on the work being done, Anderson said.

Mar Vista General Manager Anthony Cucci expressed excite-

ment about the new state-ofthe-art kitchen coming online soon. The restaurant has operated since August using a portable freezer and kitchen.

“It’s going to be phenomenal,” he said last week as outdoor tables started filling up.

The temporary kitchen and walk-in freezer will go away after the new kitchen is finished, he said. A new fireplace will add a warming touch, too.

Blocking out Mother Nature with a new roof removes a variable that could have brought complications, he said.

“We’re dried in pretty much,” said Cucci, referring to the fact his business is no longer open to the elements. “We’re very operational now.”

Despite the renovations, Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub is still serving 300 to 400 meals per day, he said.

Once the kitchen is finished, the project’s focus will be on installing a new bar and dining room in the second phase.

The number of seats will stay at 169, but the new facilities will offer an overdue upgrade while retaining the Old Florida charm of Mar Vista, Cucci said.

“We’ll still have the cypress siding and the tin roof,” Cucci said.

Architect Barron Schimberg, whom owner Ed Chiles hired for previous multimillion-dollar renovations of his Beach House Restaurant in Bradenton Beach and Sandbar Restaurant in Anna Maria, has included a water tower at Mar Vista.

After the first phase of work is completed in January, it will halt, then resume after season. Completion is planned for December 2017.

SPRING-SUMMER 2013 Longbeach Village residents rallies around a third application Chiles submitted that included renovating the historical Rufus P. Jordan House on the property to use it for events.

JUNE 2013 Chiles withdrew his application and pursued a fourth application to build the secondfloor dining area similar to his original plan and the additional 11 seats.

OCTOBER 2014 Chiles submitted a fifth plan after a Village resident filed a challenge stating that the special exception the commission approved in 2010 allowing for 11 additional seats had expired in 2011.

EARLY 2016 Chiles stood on the roof of Mar Vista and decided the second-story view wasn’t as spectacular as he’d hoped due to the growth of surrounding trees. He decided to nix the second-floor dining plan and nix the request for additional seats.

AUGUST 2016 Construction began on a $2 million upgrade that will add a second story office and storage area, a new interior and a 37% larger kitchen.

The plan will reconfigure seating, but the total number of seats will remain at 169.

Town removes sunken sailboat from Sarasota Bay A 40-foot sailboat that sank in 8 feet of water in Sarasota Bay after Hurricane Hermine Sept. 1 has been removed to a landfill.

The town paid a contractor $5,200 to remove the vessel over two days Oct. 25-26, according to Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino.

Rubino said police have been in contact with the last listed owner, who said he sold the boat but has no paperwork to prove it.

“We charged the last person with a misdemeanor for that and are looking into the process for pursuing criminal charges,” Rubino said. “The town would go after him for restitution.”

Commissions seek to stop traffic Driving into another tourism season, Longboat Key and Sarasota County officials say it’s time to find real answers.

Florida’s white sand beaches on the Gulf Coast beckon vacationers from around the world. But as the region’s prominence as a tourist destination has grown, traffic problems for barrier islands such as Longboat Key have mounted.

At a joint meeting Oct. 26 between the Sarasota County and Longboat Key commissions, representatives discussed the need for action.

“Let me try, perhaps a little desperately, to find some positives here,” said Sarasota County Commission Chairman Alan Maio. “This issue is not going to go away.”

Maio said disparate regional factions must unite to effect change on the state level. He called for the formation of a regional group of mayors and leaders to lobby at the state level for transportation funding.

Longboat Key Mayor Jack Duncan, who has four months left before he leaves office due to term limits, said he hopes Maio follows through on his suggestion.

“Alan Maio is the key to this.

He’s got the leadership and connections to do it,” Duncan said.

Duncan said leadership is what is needed from the Legislature.

He said the intractable transportation problems on Longboat Key have to be solved by changes in infrastructure.

“In my opinion, this is a state problem,” Duncan said. “They should be telling us what we

need. They should be telling us demographically what we need: a bridge here, a road there. But they are not doing any of that.”

Longboat Key Town Manager David Bullock said thousands of new residential units and about 1 million square feet of commercial space will eventually add traffic pressure from Sarasota to the south.

Roughly 10,000 new units and 2 million more square feet of commercial space along Cortez Road will bring more vehicles from the north.

“For about 20 years, I was on (the Sarasota side) of the bay, and I used to get a kick out of it when Longboat Key complained about traffic,” Bullock said. “They only complained about it for three months. And then they went quiet.

“Now, I’m on the other side of the bay and have been for about five years. You can see the traffic progression. The congestion is incredible.”

Sarasota County Commissioner Carolyn Mason said county and city officials are at odds throughout Florida regarding traffic problems. She urged unity in lobbying the Legislature for relief and said the polarizing aspects of traffic studies should be resisted.

Longboat Key Vice Mayor Terry Gans said significant physical and fiscal hurdles must be overcome to enact comprehensive traffic solutions for barrier islands.

“We’re spending millions of dollars to get people here,” Gans said. “When they get here, if

we’re abusing them in the sense that they can’t go anywhere, it will be a waste of millions of dollars eventually.

“For Longboat Key residents, the issue is quality of life. As for the surrounding jurisdictions, we have a real economic incentive to see this thing through.”

Duncan said solving the Longboat Key traffic issue requires leadership from municipalities and business associations.

“The reality is, this area is overwhelmed by pinch points where traffic comes to a standstill no matter where you are,” he said.

Bullock said it’s time to come to grips with the issue. Barrier islands statewide face the same traffic crunch, a problem that, left unresolved, could start to harm their economic health.

“It is a real issue that is beginning to affect the way people view Longboat Key, Lido, St. Armands, and I suspect you can just take that up and down the coast: Anna Maria, Siesta Key and so on,” Bullock said. “People are saying, I don’t know if I want to come to your island if I have to sit in traffic for two hours.”

Suggestions for improving traffic flow in recent years have included building a third bridge over Sarasota Bay to Longboat Key, implementing a water taxi system, better timing for traffic signals and roundabouts.

Not only did Sawyer maintain his position according to his candidate questionnaire, but many other candidates share his opinion. That includes his opponent for the District 1 seat, Arlene Sweeting.

“It gives citizens a voice in how county government operates and gives them a meaningful way to participate,” Sweeting said.

Although the issue has been settled for now, it seems the majority of candidates would stand by the current board’s decision in the future.

“Sarasota County government works,” said District 4 candidate Jody Hudgins said. “I do not see a compelling reason at this time to change how we do things.”

Still, nearly half of the candidates vying for seats on the board — four of the Democratic challengers — say they would come to the governing body with immediate plans to change the county’s charter.

Specifically, they would change the way the County Commission is elected from a countywide vote to that of single districts. That would mean voters would only cast ballots for candidates within the geographic district in which they reside.

he Sarasota County Charter Review Board has already denied a proposal to make the board an appointed body, and according to responses to the candidate questionnaires submitted to the Longboat Observer, the majority of candidates for the board stand by that decision.

But, a crop of Democrats vying for the seats that usually lean Republican have said they have other changes in mind for what is usually dubbed the county’s “constitution.”

Twenty Florida counties are governed by local charters.

Sarasota’s Charter Review Board members have been elected since the county established its charter in 1971.

Of Florida’s 20 charter counties only Sarasota’s Charter Review Board is elected by the public. The other 19 counties rely on an internal appointment process.

Despite the majority of Florida charter counties opting for appointment rather than election, earlier this year, Sarasota’s Charter Review Board unanimously decided to continue allowing the public to elect members to the board.

PRAY FOR NEW ROLE MODELS

Our republic has survived plenty of strife in our polity. Out of this election, let’s pray the pendulum swings to elected officeholders pledged to lifelong honesty and decency.

W

e will survive … We made it through Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson and the Civil War. Surely we can make it through whatever and whoever are next.

The people of the United States are far bigger and better than any one individual in the White House.

But out of this tragedy and travesty of the 2016 presidential election, let’s hope and pray that it serves as a lasting lesson to all current and future elected officials and office seekers: lifelong integrity, morality and propriety matter.

With the swearing in of every new elected officeholder, so help them God, they pledge their behavior in office to be that of role models of honesty and decency.

ST. ARMANDS’ CHAMP

For a guy from New Jersey, Marty Rappaport broke the mold. You know the stereotype: the gold-chained, pushy huckster.

Mind you, Rappaport certainly was no pushover himself, and you can find people who have done business with him who will vouch that he is a shrewd, tough entrepreneur and negotiator.

But when it came to the health, vitality and future of St. Armands Circle, Rappaport for the past 30 years was its uncontested champion.

Not in words, but in his actions. No one in that period worked harder for the benefit of Sarasota’s No. 1 retail and tourist center.

Rappaport recently announced he has sold his property interests on St. Armands and would be stepping down from the St. Armands Business Improvement District, the taxing district he birthed.

Sure, Rappaport had a self-interest as a St. Armands property owner. But instead of sitting back as a sideline complainer, Rappaport poured his heart, energy and persistence into

SORRY, NO DO-OVERS If you already have voted and now change your mind because of events, as one supervisor of elections told us, you are “SOL.” There are no do-overs.

making St. Armands Circle a better place for all — property owners, merchants, shoppers, surrounding residents and visitors.

The parking lot behind the Met; redesigned medians; new landscaping; the statues; and one day soon, a new parking garage. All of these physical enhancements are the result of Rappaport leading efforts among St. Armands property owners and merchants and Sarasota city officials.

But he also brought people together. Rappaport was among the organizers of the St. Armands landowners, merchants and residents group.

Thanks also to Rappaport’s efforts, St. Armands Circle became the first retail district in the state to form a Business Improvement District, which taxes property owners to raise funds for improvements. Rappaport served until recently as its unpaid administrator and chair.

We saw Rappaport at work.

Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown of Sarasota was correct when he told the Longboat Observer that Rappaport always approached the city

with an attitude of how the city and the improvement district could work together, not with demands of what the city could do for the Circle.

“I don’t think there’s a single person who has done more for St. Armands than you,” Gavin Meshad, current chair of the improvement district, told Rappaport.

For sure Rappaport can stand alongside the Circle’s founder, John Ringling, for his lasting contributions.

ANOTHER STUDY?

So the Florida Department of Transportation has budgeted up to $1.5 million to study barrier island traffic.

Hey, we’ll make a deal. We’ll do the study for half the amount, and we already can tell you what the results will be: There is not enough road capacity to accommodate all of the cars trying to leave the islands at peak hours or trying to motor through and around St. Armands Circle.

Everyone has known this for at least three decades. And numerous studies already have said the same thing. What’s more, some of the studies — in particular, a 2007 study by the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Floria — have made sensible recommendations to improve the frustrating conditions.

But no one does anything.

Talk, talk, talk. Study, study, study.

This next round — not expected to begin until January — likely will be no different.

What’s the point?

Perhaps state and island officials might go back to that 2007 study and use that $1.5 million to implement some of its sensible suggestions: • At Gulf Drive and Cortez Road: “Add an additional lane on the south leg of the mini-roundabout, and extend it up to the intersection where the outside lane becomes a right-turn only lane.”

• “The major recommended strategy to alleviate traffic congestion at St. Armands Circle is to establish North Adams Drive and Madison Drive as an alternate route …”

Taxpayers, residents, visitors and businesses don’t need another study.

They need tangible actions … traffic managers in the streets at peak times; redirecting traffic to alternate routes; public campaigns to discourage driving during peak traffic times; tapping local transportation funds to add turn lane capacity at key intersections.

Season is here. But still no plans or strategies to address the urgency.

We oppose Amendment 2 on the grounds that medical marijuana, specifically, should not become part of the Florida Constitution. Beer, alcohol and cigarettes are not in the Constitution. Medical marijuana should be addressed statutorily.

In your Oct. 27 editorial, you lamented the country’s drift away from the Constitution and how bleak things look for future generations. You also mentioned the inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence.

If a person is suffering from excruciating pain from cancer or any other cause, don’t you think his desire to be pain-free qualifies as pursuit of happiness? If so, how do you justify advising readers to vote against legalizing medical marijuana?

Obviously, no one in your circle of family and friends has experienced that sort of pain; otherwise you wouldn’t be so indifferent/cavalier/callous about their suffering.

Here’s the real irony: In the present election, we are using a ballot question to amend the Florida Constitution to overturn an inherently unconstitutional statute. I challenge you to address that dichotomy in this week’s column.

Twenty-four other states already allow medical use of marijuana. And four of truly enlightened ones — Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Colorado — even allow recreational use. Those states understand what inalienable rights mean. Even if someone isn’t using drugs for pain relief but merely wants to get a high, or as a temporary escape from life’s problems, so what? That’s

still constitutionally protected pursuit of happiness.

Supporters of bans on recreational drugs rely mainly on two arguments: The government must protect their kids, because they are too irresponsible/lazy/incompetent to do the job; and drugs like marijuana can become a gateway to stronger, potentially deadly drugs.

And by the way, the war on drugs has caused more deaths, misery, gangs, decline of neighborhoods, etc. than users have.

Passage of the sales tax referendum will provide the necessary funds for infrastructure rebuilding so badly needed, along with preservation of our parks and public safety, and to continue to ensure smart growth.

The barrier islands have been a microcosm of what is happening in the county — and in Florida. Florida has overtaken New York as the third most populous state. The county has 50,000 new residents, $47 million less in the budget, 300 fewer employees, and our infrastructure is failing. As a successful businessman and legislator, I was able to balance the budget, have the lowest taxes in Manatee County and successfully address the needs of my growing city.

Providing for mobility to avoid gridlock in key areas of the county. This issue is not new, but we need to move road construction and alternative transportation options forward to construction. We also need to adopt a fiscally stable, predictable budget that does not rely on reserves.

What are the biggest opportunities within your district?

The proposed update to the land development code and the Tax Increment Financing district provide opportunities for urban core redevelopment, maximizing use of existing infrastructure, an alternative to greenfield development, as well as affordable housing.

Working with the SarasotaManatee Metropolitan Planning Organization and Florida Department of Transportation, we will prioritize and fund the long-needed transportation improvements identified in the network area analysis.

What are three issues you deem most important not discussed above?

1. The commission, prior to 2012, watched the indigent care fund expire and provided no leadership to address the issue. Today, through partnerships with nonprofit agencies, the budget for indigent care has been reduced to approximately a third. Local government cannot and should not be the provider of health care.

2. The comprehensive plan was adopted in 1989 and has not been modified since its adoption. The plan should be simplified so the community can rely on the regulations in the land development code, and not interpretations.

3. Phosphate mining. Mining is a property right, subject to stringent regulations.

The Manatee County mining ordinance has been updated.

We need to ensure the regulations remain up to date and are enforced.

Why are you running for office?

I am deeply critical of how the board runs the finances of our county, and I am deeply concerned about unbridled growth. We must manage our budget so we do not have to increase taxes. We must provide an atmosphere to encourage attainable housing.

We must control the unbridled growth which affects everyone and everything around us. We must fund our critical services.

We must truthfully explain the ramifications of the 44th Avenue extension. We must start to address the water issue, as well. None of this is happening with the current regime.

What will be the biggest issues that arise due to growth?

Traffic is one of the big ones.

Also, growth as we know it today does not pay for itself; hence the reason for the proposed half-penny sales tax increase. Additional problems created are a burden on drinking water and a burden on services, such as the underfunded sheriff and EMS. What are the biggest opportunities within your district?

The Tara Bridge is part of the grid pattern the board and developers are laying for massive new development out east.

If their plans come to fruition, residents of Tara and Creekwood will find a major artery in their backyard.

Myakka City is under threat of development, mainly because it has the last source of “free” water.

Attainable housing is a high priority, along with promoting culture and development in the downtown and urban core. We also need a viable noise ordinance and an entertainment district.

What’s on the Lawn Party menu?

The sixth annual event will take place Dec. 3 at the Longboat Key Club.

The menu is nearly set for this year’s Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key’s Gourmet Lawn Party.

More than 30 restaurants will be serving up their signature dishes at this year’s event. The sixth annual event, previously known as the St. Jude’s Gourmet Luncheon, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Islandside driving range of the Longboat Key Club.

“It’s a great event,” said Michael Garey, event chairman and owner-operator of the Lazy Lobster.

“I think at this point, it’s Longboat Key’s signature event, probably the only that draws people to a singular event on the island.”

Raffle tickets will be sold for $100 apiece with a maximum of 500 tickets available. The grand prize is $20,000 in cash. The second prize is a Universal VIP Experience. The third prize is a staycation at the new Zota Beach Resort for two, and the fourth prize, a “year of delicious dining,” which includes 52 gift cards from area restaurants. The fifth prize drawing will be for a Longboat Limousine excursion and lobster dinner for 10 6:28 at the Lazy Lobster.

Tickets for the event are $50.

Tables for 10 are available for $450.

The event is the Kiwanis Club’s biggest fundraiser, and last year it netted $60,000. Garey hopes to be in that range again this year, despite lighter sponsorships. The event will benefit Manatee and Sarasota area youth.

Every August, the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key awards scholarships to local students, and this event aids the group in that effort.

Behind the scenes, James Linkogle, a project manager with the Longboat Key Public Works Department, helps with the staging, sound and other intricacies of the event.

He will, however, come out from behind the scenes and perform with the Blues Pig Band.

“He’s been an asset to us for so many years on this event,” Garey said.

Tickets are available at Longboat Key Sun Bank, the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and at the Lazy Lobster.

At 91, Levitt’s past sculpts his artwork today Retired art teacher Marvin Levitt seeks to get his hands dirty every day by sculpting and drawing.

Levitt says you need a certain amount of dexterity to create papier-mâché sculptures. It usually takes him two to three weeks to finish a sculpture.

Levitt’s paintings are drawn from his life. The beach is a popular subject for his paintings. But

he also draws on his past. Levitt grew up in the 1930s and ’40s, the Depression years. He uses symbols from those years as inspiration — old trucks, broken down houses and debris.

Today, he enjoys going to

museums and seeing what other artists have done.

“I don’t copy artists or anything like that,” he said. “But for some reason it’s like plugging in and getting vibes and seeing what people did in the past.”

Marvin Levitt holds his wire cutters with just enough force to twist the chicken wire into the right position.

His wrinkled hands move swiftly and gently, like this is what they were made to do.

The wire is strong and steady enough to resemble a pair of legs.

Levitt soaks a ripped piece of a brown paper bag in water, then weaves it around the wire in what he calls a butterfly pattern.

And although he’s unsure of what it will be exactly, it’s destined to be his latest masterpiece.

Levitt spends time in his home studio each day working on papier-mâché sculptures. He repeats the process of soaking brown bags or magazine pages and weaving them in and out of the wire until he has about five layers. The top coat is either a magazine page or a layer of acrylic paint.

“I have to get my hands dirty every day, otherwise my DNA has a problem,” Levitt said. “I feel that I’ve lost something. Something’s wrong with my day because my fingers didn’t get dirty and they have to be used.”

Levitt had a nearly 70-year career as an art teacher at Philadelphia’s Temple University, Bucks County public schools and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences in New Jersey. Now, at 91, he continues his love for art through sculpting.

Levitt said that at this point in his life, he does things that make him feel good. He spends his summers on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, and the art he creates there is on display at m.t. burton Gallery in Surf City, N.J. The art he creates at his winter residence on Longboat Key stays there.

Over the years, Levitt has collected candy wrappers, stamps and postcards to use for his papier-mâché work. His partner, Sue Gordon, is used to holding onto old wrapping paper.

“They’re interesting. They have texture and color and variations.

Some have gold, some have silver, and so when she says, ‘Can I throw it away?’ I say, ‘No, I think we have to use it,’” Levitt said.

It takes him about two or three weeks to finish one papier-mâché sculpture, but when one is completed, it’s placed among the other items Levitt has made in his home.

He calls his house a small museum. His paintings adorn the light blue walls of the living room, and his sculptures rest on tables and counters around his home.

“But it’s amazing to see the finished products because it’s a lot of work,” Gordon said. “It looks like nothing, and all of a sudden it’s a person.”

Levitt calls himself an innovator. He can’t recall exactly how he got into art, though he remembers being able to draw what he saw and taking lessons in elementary school.

Levitt got in trouble for doodling in class while his history teacher was talking about George Washington crossing the Delaware River. It wasn’t until Levitt’s mother was called to the school that the teacher actually looked

RICHARD BARIBAULT

Richard Baribault, 92, of Longboat Key, died Oct. 19.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., to Harry and Marion Baribault.

He graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1942 and attended Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the military in 1943 and served for three-and-ahalf years as a P51 fighter pilot.

He was stationed in Colchester, England at Wormingford Air Base and flew B-17 bombers over Germany.

He married Jule Jones in 1948 and was married to her for 49 years until her death in 1997. He graduated from Yale University in 1949.

He had a 40-year career in engineering and management with Alcoa and served in many roles from sales engineer to purchasing manager. From 1970 to 1974, he served as president of Alcoa of Great Britain, and from 1979 to 1988, he was the company’s vice president of procurement.

He was a past president and board of trustees member for the Westchester Condominium Association. In 1999, he married Elfriede Kovesdy.

Mr. Baribault was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jule Jones; and his brother, Harry Baribault.

He is survived by his wife, Elfriede; brother, Peter Barib-

Mary Louise Gorman, 86, of West Roxbury, Mass., died Oct. 24.

She was born in Philadelphia to Linus and Nelly Kelly.

She was raised in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Trinity College. She married the late James “Lou” Gorman, the former executive vice president and general manager of the Boston Red Sox. While following Lou’s baseball career, she became involved in many charities in Baltimore, Seattle, Kansas City and Boston. She was a volunteer for the USO in Newport, R.I. She enjoyed reading and spending her winters on Longboat Key. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nephew, Robert LaRoche. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Virginia Gorman and Tina Gorman; eight nieces and nephews; and several cousins and great-nieces and nephews.

Ralph ‘Jack’ Jaret, 94, of Longboat Key, died Oct. 19.

He was born in New York City to Frances and Joseph Jaret. He attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he met his future wife, Ellen Freeman. The two married in 1943 before Jack enlisted in the Army.

Following his time in the military, he graduated from Pace University in business administration. In 1984, Ellen died. He married Sally Ward in 1985, and the couple moved to Longboat Key. After retiring, Jack became active in the community. He was part of the Sarasota Community Foundation, briefly ran for mayor of Longboat Key and was commodore of Bird Key Yacht Club. He also served on the vestry of the Church of the Redeemer for three years and was treasurer for one year.

Jack is survived by wife Sally; sons, Michael and Peter; daughter, Susan; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and brother-in-law Greg Ward.

A requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota.

He was born in Amboy, Ill., to Leroy and Mabel Zierke.

He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1952 and married Ellen Bender Sept. 15, 1953.

Donald served as staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

In 1993, he retired from Amcore Bank, formerly American Bank, and become co-owner of Anderson Underground and owned Village Grocery on Longboat Key. He was a member of the I.O.U. Club, the Jaycees Club, Belmar and Mauh-Nah-TeeSee clubs and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a past president of Noon Lions Club in Rockford and part of Rockford Crime Stoppers. He was on the First Presbyterian Church elder board and served on the Rock Valley College Ad-Hoc Committee.

Donald was a Chicago Bears and Belvidere Bucs fan. He enjoyed golfing, painting and spending time at this beach house on Longboat.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, the Rev. Allen Zierke.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Zierke; sons David and Mark Zierke; their spouses; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Lee Zierke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald Zierke, 82, of Belvidere, Ill., died Oct. 12.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John and Margaret Salvo.

On Aug, 17, 1957, she married Philip Mylod. After Mylod’s death in 1968, she married William Sherry on Oct. 9, 1982.

He died in 2006.

In 1982, she retired as a paymaster at Western Printing Co. Inc. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, reading, theater movies, crossword puzzles and golf. She was a former member of The Dutchess Golf and Country Club and St. Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie, N.Y..

was most excited to collect candy, and her friend, vampire Maya Andreu couldn’t have agreed more. They weren’t the only ones. Markell Humphrey, 7, said his favorite part of Halloween was collecting candy and junk food. Cornelius Smith, 4, who dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, said he liked getting candy and wearing a costume.

But for those handing out the candy, the celebration meant a little more. Danny Williams and John August, both of Michael Saunders & Co., have been

handing out treats on this night for the past six years.

“We just love seeing the people and the kids, and they’re happy,” Williams said. “They make the world happy.”

While Williams refilled the candy bowl, August handed it out to kids passing by. Every year, he volunteers to be the one passing out candy. His favorite part though, isn’t handing out treats.

It’s what comes after that.

“The little kids that say thank you,” he said.

Heroes, villains haunt Bird Key

A

classic battle between good and evil took place last weekend in the form of a Halloween party for Bird Key Yacht Club.

Eighty-four club members got in the Halloween spirit Oct. 29 for the “Heroes vs.

Villains” celebration.

Heroes, like Clark Kent, and villains, like Cruella De Vil, gathered for a cocktail hour, costume contest and dinner.

Some members got creative with their outfits. Jim Rogue got his idea from his walking group. He dressed as

a “special investigator” — a detective’s outfit topped with an alligator head. Lee Duffey was disguised as Moses with some rejected commandments, such as “thou shall remember your attitude determines your altitude.”

Both competed in the costume contest, along with many other members. There were three categories: staff, heroes and villains. In the end, it was narrowed down to three contestants who were voted on for the people’s choice award.
