It’s that out-of-focus nature of photos that makes the mystery, right? You’ve never seen a sit-down portrait of Bigfoot, now have you?

And so it is with photos sent to us by Longboater Jane Sikorovsky, who swears they show an alligator in the surf near the 4600 block of GMD. (She has three witnesses, for the record.)

Police were called, but an officer who scanned the waters with binoculars didn’t find anything. Wildlife experts say the freshwater beasts do, from time to time, visit saltwater but can’t really thrive there.

It is, after all 2020, and there was a monster truck driving in Sarasota Bay recently, so pretty much anything is possible.

Sailboat debris removed from beach

RESIDENTS CONTINUE STORM CLEANUP Cleanup is continuing in the Buttonwood Harbor neighborhood even though Tropical Storm Eta passed through a two weeks ago.

Bags filled with debris and downed tree limbs lined the streets waiting for trash collection. Sherry Nikolich’s Buttonwood Drive home was among those with piles of refuse at the curb.

“We were up until 1 a.m. [while the storm flooding] was dumping into the doors,” Nikolich said. “One thing about this neighborhood, we were all calling each other.”

It was a neighbor who tipped off Nikolich to check on her garage.

“If she wouldn’t have called me, I would have still been sitting in there, [and] I’d never have known to run out and at least start to get some belongings out of there,” Nikolich said.

The sailboat that washed ashore on the beach is gone.

Tropical Storm Eta destroyed the boat in the 4200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, and a crew came for the pieces last week.

“It was no match for the storm,” Longboat Key police officer Chris Skinner said.

Debris from the boat was scattered across about half a mile of shoreline following Eta’s waves.

Owner Mark Sternal had already been cited for failure to remove a derelict vessel, a firstdegree misdemeanor.

On Nov. 19, crews from Sea Tow Boat Towing Service brought a skid steer on the beach to dismantle and remove the pieces.

West Coast Inland Navigation District Executive Director Justin McBride put out bids to have the remnants of Sternal’s sailboat removed.

McBride said it cost WCIND $3,800 to hire Sea Tow for the job.

Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino said beachgoers should be safer after Sea Tow removed the sailboat debris but should still take care.

“It’s usually a very lengthy process to get a derelict vessel removed,” Rubino said. “As far as that process goes, this was a rather quick one.”

Kamila Nowak, whose company, Coastal Properties and Management, manages La Playa Rental Condominiums at 4425 Gulf of Mexico Drive, said she had concern for her guests.

“We were afraid that they might hurt themselves or kids, whoever, especially at night,” Nowak said.

“That’s why we put the caution tape around.”

Nowak said she was not surprised the boat’s wreckage wound up in front of La Playa around 4 p.m. Nov. 11 as Tropical Storm Eta was passing through the Gulf of Mexico.

Rubino said every tropical storm and hurricane he’s seen in

his career has been different.

“The fact that we had high tide and the fact that we had the winds right at the same time, I’m sure, was a contributing factor to where it was spread around the beach, but all in all we were pretty lucky with that storm,” Rubino said.

Nowak said she is relieved the town and WCIND had Sea Tow dismantle and remove the sailboat debris.

She said she’ll remember how people liked to take photos of it.

“It was the most popular item photographed on Longboat Key,” Nowak said. “It was incredible.

People were coming every day taking pictures.”

The flooding also caused a construction site bathroom to float down Buttonwood Drive.

The town of Longboat Key is asking residents to leave yard waste in 32-gallon cans, bags or small bundles.

Residents and businesses can arrange for special pickups of large items or piles by calling Waste Management at 753-7591. Longboat Key has its normal waste collection on Wednesdays.

Town Manager Tom Harmer said the town is finalizing its damage assessment to determine any potential long-term impacts.

ight real estate inventory has driven up prices on Longboat Key and elsewhere, but the town remains concerned about the effects of an aging stock of condominiums.

Median sales prices on Longboat Key have been higher in seven of the first nine months of 2020 than in 2019. The region’s highest-ever sale was recorded in July when a gulf-front estate in the 6000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive sold for a dollar more than the previous record of $13 million.

In the Manatee and Sarasota region, as well, the overall median sales price rose to a record of more than $351,000 in September.

Longboat Key Commissioner Sherry Dominick, who works as a Realtor for Michael Saunders and Co., said she’s noticed people wanting to move from the Sarasota County mainland to the barrier islands, where there is a lower population density, which also adds upward pressure to prices.

“It’s almost a reversal, we notice, of what had been going on in the prior year, and I would think that would help somewhat,” Dominick said. “Also, we really shifted into a seller’s market, and we’re getting multiple-offer situations. A lot of full-price and over-price contracts, so I would certainly hope that, that would help in next year’s valuation.”

Data from the Florida Realtors research department shows Longboat Key’s active inventory of available homes and condos has steadily decreased from 370 active listings in February to 197 in September.

economist Brad O’Connor said.

Although immediate market trends seem to be encouraging, another economic blip has the eye of town leaders.

Longboat Key saw its yearto-year taxable property values decrease for this budget year, something that hasn’t happened since 2013.

“This was a bit of a surprise to us this year,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said. “As you look at Sarasota County in general and all the other municipalities in Sarasota County, they all saw growth, in some cases pretty significant growth in their tax base.”

The town hired John Tuccillo, president of a economic consulting company, to examine property values in town.

He reported to comissioners that older condos, traffic issues, and mainland competition were concerns moving ahead but that it’s likely the dip of 2.81% in Sarasota County’s portion of town was a one-time event.

rose by 3.6%, resulting in a overall drop of less than a percentage point.

“I think that very clearly, there will be an uptick in valuation for Longboat Key properties based on the excess demand for properties here in general,” Tuccillo said of the 2021 valuation process, which begins in January. “You will benefit from that.”

Of the 27 gulf-front condominiums in the Sarasota County portion of the Key, 18 were built in 1990 or before, records show.

Two new projects are on the drawing board. Unicorp National Developments’ The Residences at the St. Regis Longboat Key Resort, to be built at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive, is taking deposits on 69 units starting at $2 million.

Groundbreaking is set for 2021.

Developers also announced plans for 16 units to be built under the banner of Sage Longboat Key at 4651 Gulf of Mexico Drive, the site of Sun ‘n’ Sea Cottages & Apartments. Prices are expected to start at $4 million. Completion is expected in 2022.

Ellen Paris, who writes about luxury real estate for Forbes, recently published a story about the Longboat Key real estate market, said the newest condos will satisfy a new breed of buyer.

One important takeaway? Million-dollar or more sales remain strong, indicating an interest in Longboat’s luxury mindset.

“If I were somebody within that $4 million to $6 million price range, yeah, I want to have an elevator that goes straight to my unit. I want to have my own private garage,” she told the Longboat Observer in an interview.

“If I’m spending that much money, I want that.”

Longboat moves forward with beach projects The town is working on four renourishment projects throughout the island.

and shape 810,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand from offshore borrow areas to Longboat Key’s Gulf of Mexico shoreline. A typical dump truck holds about 10-14 cubic yards.

The town is planning to advertise for bids in December with bid opening in January 2021.

The notice to proceed is expected in February or March 2021. Construction time will take at least six months because the winning bidder must complete the project outside of turtle season, which is March through October. Mopps thinks the town could move up the project.

“We need to buy as much time as we can for our contractor to work outside of turtle nesting season,” Mopps said.

“They’ve indicated that there are some areas of concern,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said.

“When you do this assessment, you have to look to look at, not just which sand may have been impacted through the erosion from the storm, but they look at the entire beach profile, which goes out into the water to see, where did that sand go?”

Harmer said in some cases sand might have moved on the island, and in others the sand might still be in the water.

“You can look at it a day or two after the storm, but you have to kind of take a little longer view to see where that sand may end up,” Harmer said.

yards from the spit, which is north and east of Longboat Pass Bridge.

Mopps said the town wants to restore this area to the 20032006 conditions.

The permitting application process takes up to a year, Mopps said. Construction on this portion of the project would start around December 2021 and take about four months.

This project is to permit, maintain and repair the groin at New Pass on the south end of the island.

The plan calls for dredging about 200,000 cubic yards of sand out of New Pass. The material would be placed on the beaches just north of New Pass and fill southern segments of beach not nourished during the current project.

Design and permitting are scheduled for fiscal year 2021 with construction in the winter of 2022. It will take about four months to complete this project.

Mopps said the costs of this project would be “minimized” because of the short distance where the sand would be put into place.

Kiwanis brings out the bells on Friday Volunteers begin annual fundraiser at Shoppes of Bay Isles.

ells will be ringing the glad, glad news — of the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key’s 2020 Salvation Army Bell Ringing. The club will begin collecting donations Nov. 28 at the Shoppes of Bay Isles.

Kiwanis is keeping with the tradition this year, and members hope to bring in a lot of money as in years past — the club is consistently one of the highest fundraisers in the Sarasota area and often has a paint-stirring stick on hand to stuff bills farther into the kettle to make room for more.

“People really get into the spirit of things,” former organizer Ed Krepela said. “That’s just the kind of generosity we get in our kettles.”

In addition, all $20 bills donated in the greater Sarasota area will be matched by an anonymous donor, a match that’s been going on since 2017.

The logistics of bell-ringing won’t change too much with the ongoing pandemic, organizer Chris Sachs said. Bell-ringers will be strongly encouraged to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. (Club President

RINGING IN THE SEASON The club kicks off its bellringing at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28 and will close up shop for the season at 5:45 p.m.

Christmas Eve. Volunteers work 75-minute blocks, which total 196 hours over the course of the campaign.

In 2019, the club raised $24,094. In 2018, it raised $19,508.

Larson and Sachs said they will wear masks, and Sachs is going to bring the Christmas cheer with his.

“I’ve been on Amazon looking for Santa Claus COVID-19 masks,” he said.

Sachs takes over the organization from fellow Kiwanian Krepela, who has coordinated the volunteer schedule for years. This year, Krepela is passing the torch to Sachs and taking time to meet the youngest of his nine greatgrandchildren in New York.

efore getting down to code enforcement discussion, Chris Kopp first addressed what was on everybody’s mind: Yes, he is Officer Kopp. No, it’s not a new joke.

Kopp, the town’s code enforcement officer, attended the Nov. 19 Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key meeting to share his story and what code enforcement actually is.

Kopp is a former Marine and police officer and had started his own business when the pandemic began. Like many, his plans changed — and he actually saw the listing for the code enforcement job while visiting Longboat Key with his family.

There’s only one town code enforcement officer and thousands of little code violations all over the island, he said, but he loves his job and making a difference in a small town.

“I always tell people, if you have a problem that can wait 24 hours, I’m your guy,” Kopp said.

Southwest adds flights to SRQ Southwest Airlines Co. has published initial flight schedules for Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Sarasota-Bradenton service will begin Feb. 14, 2021, according to a news release.

Southwest will initially serve passengers through four nonstop routes from the airport: Baltimore/Washington, Chicago (Midway), Houston (Hobby) and Nashville.

Midway and Houston are new nonstop destinations for the airport.

Throughout his tenure as sheriff, Knight enacted many programs, such as jail recovery pods for inmates who are veterans, have mental illnesses or have addiction. He said he’s looking forward to continuing that work with First Step.

“It’s an opportunity to take an organization and grow it and do something that affects a lot of people,” Knight said. “Most everybody, at some point in time, has been affected by substance abuse or mental illness, whether it’s with themselves or a family member.”

Knight will leave his position as sheriff Jan. 5 and begin at First Step on Jan. 25. He will take over the job from interim CEO Gwen MacKenzie, who a former CEO of Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System.

TIRES, BEWARE 1:30 a.m., Gulf of Mexico Drive Traffic hazard: While on patrol, an officer spotted a black bag on the roadway. After stopping to remove it, the officer noted the bag contained carpet tack strips.

MISSING MAN FOUND 3:40 a.m., 1600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Assist other agencies: An 86-year-old man, reported missing to the Sarasota Police Department, was found safe following a traffic stop. An officer on patrol was alerted by the town’s license plate recognition to the presence of a car connected to missing person case heading north on the island. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, who said he believed he was on a road in Michigan. The man’s identity was confirmed, and an officer from Sarasota came to pick up the man and bring him home. The car was picked up later in the day.

WASHED ASHORE 7:38 a.m., 4200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen assist: A resident called police to report an apparent piece of boat debris on the beach. The debris appeared to be part of a motor, with several cables attached. The responding officer contacted the Public Works Department.

DAMAGED 6:03 p.m., 6600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen assist: A beachfront homeowner called police asking for assistance in marking a damaged seawall to prevent injuries to pedestrians in the area. An officer helped by rolling out yellow tape and marking the location. The next morning, officers returned to the site and further marked the hazardous area.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE, PART I 10 a.m., Gulf of Mexico Drive Animal complaint: An officer who was northbound on Gulf of Mexico Drive spotted a raccoon that had been fatally hit by traffic. With the help of a private citizen, the animal was moved to the side of the road.

GOTTA GO 3:43 p.m., 3000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Disturbance: A resort guest who caused a disturbance with profanity and then broke a room door that wasn’t operating properly was asked to leave by a manager who called police. An officer explained the manager’s wishes to the guest, who said he understood and apologized. Three other people with the guest were also asked to leave.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE, PART II 4:37 p.m., 1000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Animal complaint: A resident alerted police to a dead raccoon that had washed up on the beach. An officer confirmed the former raccoon’s location and relayed the information to the Public Works Department. Foul play was not suspected.

HELPING OUT 1:15 p.m., 4000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Rescue assist: While on patrol, an officer saw a man lying in the grass near the entrance to a park. The man told the officer he had fallen from his bike while trying to avoid someone not wearing a mask. Initially the man thought he was OK but subsequently realized he was injured. Fire rescue was called and took the man to the hospital. Before embarking in an ambulance, the man asked that

his cycling gear be taken to the police station for safekeeping.

BOOKED 4:40 p.m., 4000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Wanted person: An alert about a vehicle belonging to a wanted person from Monroe County led to a traffic stop and the driver being taken into custody. An officer spotted the car, stopped it and confirmed the driver was the individual named in an arrest warrant. The driver was taken to Sarasota County Jail.

IT’S OK 2:10 p.m., 6100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Security check: An officer on patrol found the door of a shop unsecured, though there was no sign of a break-in. As he was finishing up, the officer encountered a repair technician who said he had been working in an adjacent building, was moving now to work on this building and that the proprietors had left doors open for him.

With no one around, the officer brought the money back to the police department for safekeeping.

CIVIL, BUT NOT CIVILIZED 4:37 p.m., 4400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Dispute: A resident called police to make a report about a dispute with a contractor. The resident said the work performed was not up to expectations, and she fired the contractor and ordered the contractor to leave. The contractor reportedly yelled at the resident with profanity. The officer said the matter was civil in nature.

YOU’RE FIRED 5:01 p.m., 4700 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Dispute: A manager of a business called police to report a dispute with a just-fired employee. The manager said the employee became upset, yelled and then said someone had stolen her purse. The manager reported the stolen purse to police.

Triumph of a noble cause On the 400th anniversary of the Puritans settling in the New World, the story of the repatriation of Williams Bradford’s history of Plymouth Colony is a vivid reminder of why our nation exists.

ere’s a likely picture in millions of homes across this Great Land on this Thanksgiving

2020: Smaller than usual numbers are gathered around the festive table. The tone and atmosphere are less jolly than previous years — muted, almost somber.

It has been a tough year.

When the Thanksgiving blessing begins, heads bowed, there is likely to be gratitude — deep, sincere gratitude for the blessings, however great or small, that the good Lord has bestowed on the family members present and afar.

We can also be sure that in these prayers there will be many pleadings to the Almighty that he look with favor on our nation and bring peace, understanding, tolerance, protection, healing, good health and love of neighbor and country during this time of strife, division and fear.

When the blessing ends, and after a heartfelt toast, someone probably will announce: “Let’s not spoil our Thanksgiving dinner with any talk of politics.”

Hear, hear. Let’s not.

Instead, we want to tell a different story, one that is seldom told, if ever. It is not the story of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock — that extraordinary story of 102 courageous Puritans aboard the Mayflower falling to their knees when they stepped on land and their settling at New Plymouth 400 years ago. Yes, 400 years ago!

With remarkably little fanfare, this year marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims laying the bedrock foundation for what would become the U.S. Nor is the story we’re about to tell that of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians coming together in 1621 in peace and thanking the Almighty for a bountiful harvest at that first Thanksgiving celebration.

MOST PRECIOUS MANUSCRIPT

The story we’re about to tell occurred 276 years after that first Thanksgiving — on April 29, 1897. On that day in Boston, Thomas Bayard, the U.S. ambassador at the Court of St. James in London, handed over to the governor of Massachusetts, Roger Wolcott, a manuscript that one of the dignitaries present at the ceremony described as “the most precious manuscript on Earth, unless we could recover one of the four gospels as it came in the beginning from the pen of the Evangelist.”

Bayard had traveled from London to Boston carrying the

original 270-page manuscript of Gov. William Bradford, one of the leaders on the Mayflower and longest serving governor of Plymouth Colony. The manuscript was Bradford’s firsthand account and history of our nation’s first settlers.

Entitled “Of Plimouth Plantation,” Bradford chronicled in vivid detail life among these separatists from the time they fled religious persecution in England and Holland; to the creation of the Mayflower Compact, the document that served as their constitution and later as a foundation for our existing Constitution; through a period of discovering how self-interest in property ownership saved them from starvation; to the signing of treaties with Native American tribes. In all, his manuscript covered nearly 30 years — from 1620 to 1647.

Bradford’s manuscript is the only authentic, comprehensive, firsthand account of the real birth of this nation.

On that April day in 1897, when Bayard delivered the manuscript to Wolcott at a ceremony of dignitaries from England and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, U.S. Sen. George Hoar of Massachusetts delivered a 4,000-word speech, explaining the complicated route of Bradford’s manuscript coming home to its roots in Massachusetts.

LOST FOR 90 YEARS

Historians for nearly 90 years believed Bradford’s manuscript was lost — last seen in 1767 in the hands of the last British governor of Massachusetts. But in 1855, when an American historian was in England doing research for a book on the history of Massachusetts, he came across a copy of Bradford’s manuscript in a London bookstore.

As Hoar explained, the historian contacted a noted British historian to help him find the whereabouts of Bradford’s original manuscript. The Brit began his own search and eventually discovered Bradford’s manuscript had been stored all these years in the Bishops of London Library at Fulham Palace, the residence of British bishops.

Over the next four decades, American and Massachusetts officials made several attempts to have Bradford’s manuscript returned to its origin. But the Brits refused, saying it required an act of Parliament and Queen Victoria.

Hoar himself spent months in 1895 pursuing the manuscript’s release. Finally, he won an audience with the Bishop of London, who agreed with Hoar that Bradford’s manuscript belonged in the U.S. But he told Hoar: “I think I ought to consult the archbishop of Canterbury.

I think I ought to speak to the queen about it. We should not do such a thing behind Her Majesty’s back.”

Hoar returned to Massachusetts to tell the governor, other state officials and officers of historical societies of his success, urging them to send letters to the bishop of London in support of

the manuscript’s return.

Time passed, during which the bishop of London whom Hoar befriended became archbishop of Canterbury. The archbishop then advised Hoar and Bayard that a formal petition for the manuscript be presented to the Episcopal Consistorial Court of London.

On March 25, 1897, the court issued a decree, published in the London Times, ordering the manuscript be returned to Massachusetts.

OF PERIL AND TRIUMPH

As Hoar concluded his speech describing the efforts to bring Bradford’s manuscript back to Massachusetts, he put into perspective the importance of Bradford’s manuscript: “Wherever it shall go, it will be an object of reverent care. I do not think many Americans will gaze upon it without a little trembling of the lips and a little gathering of mist in the eyes, as they think of the story of suffering, of sorrow, of peril, of exile, of death and of lofty triumph which that book tells, which the hand of the great leader and founder of America has traced on those pages.

“There is nothing like it in human annals since the story of Bethlehem. These Englishmen and Englishwomen going out from their homes in beautiful Lincoln and York, wife separated from husband and mother from child in that hurried embarkation for Holland, pursued to the beach by English horsemen; the 13 years of exile; the life at Amsterdam ‘in alley foul and lane obscure’; the dwelling at Leyden; the embarkation at Delfthaven; the farewell of Robinson; the terrible voyage across the Atlantic; the compact in the harbor; the landing on the rock; the dreadful first winter; the death roll of more than half the number; the days of suffering and of famine; the wakeful night, listening for the yell of wild beast and the war-whoop of the savage; the building of the state on those sure foundations which no wave or tempest has ever shaken; the breaking of the new light; the dawning of the new day; the beginning of the new life; the enjoyment of peace with liberty. …

“Of all these things, this is the original record by the hand of our beloved father and founder.

Massachusetts will preserve it until the time shall come that her children are unworthy of it; and that time shall come — never.”

To underscore the significance of Bradford’s original manuscript returning to its rightful home, Wolcott followed Hoar with his interpretation of this historic event, equally profound: “On the sloping hillside of Plymouth, that bathes its feet in the waters of the Atlantic, such a voice is breathed by the brooding genius of the place, and the ear must be dull that fails to catch the whispered words. For here not alone did godly men and women suffer greatly for a great cause, but their noble purpose was not doomed to defeat but

was carried to perfect victory.

“They established what they planned. Their feeble plantation became the birthplace of religious liberty, the cradle of a free commonwealth.

“To them a mighty nation owes its debt. Nay, they have made the civilized world their debtor. In the varied tapestry which pictures our national life, the richest spots are those where gleam the golden threads of conscience, courage and faith, set in the web by that little band. May God in his mercy grant that the moral impulse which founded this nation may never cease to control its destiny, that no act of any future generation may put in peril the fundamental principles on which it is based: of equal rights in a free state, equal privileges in a free church and equal opportunities in a free school.

“In this precious volume which I hold in my hands — the gift of England to the commonwealth of Massachusetts — is told the noble, simple story ‘Of Plimoth Plantation.’

“In the midst of suffering and privation and anxiety the pious hand of William Bradford here set down in ample detail the history of the enterprise from its inception to the year 1647.

From him we may learn ‘that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties and must be both enterprised and overcome with answerable courages.’

“The sadness and pathos which some might read into the narrative are to me lost in victory. The triumph of a noble cause even at a great price is theme for rejoicing, not for sorrow, and the story here told is one of triumphant achievement, and not of defeat.

PRICELESS GIFT

“As the official representative of the commonwealth, I receive it, sir, at your hands. I pledge the faith of the commonwealth that for all time it shall be guarded in accordance with the terms of the decree under which it is delivered into her possession as one of her chiefest treasures.

“I express the thanks of the commonwealth for the priceless gift. And I venture the prophecy that for countless years to come and to untold thousands these mute pages shall eloquently speak of high resolve, great suffering and heroic endurance made possible by an absolute faith in the over-ruling providence of Almighty God.” A truly magnificent story.

While we give thanks for all our blessings on this Thanksgiving Day 2020, the story of the recovery of William Bradford’s manuscript gives greater meaning to this special day. It affirms forever the bedrock of our nation’s founding — that of the birthplace of religious liberty, a free people and our faith in God. God bless America.

Pilgrims learned socialism doesn’t work The first colonists at Plymouth, Mass., almost starved until they switched to private property and ownership.

hanksgiving is a wonderful time to remember the roots of the American “experience.” It is a great

story.

The Puritans, a group of deeply religious people, left their native England during the early 1600s after negotiating a land grant and passage on the Mayflower for the New World.

They arrived in November 1620 off the coast of what is now Plymouth, Mass. Seeking stability for their new colony, before landing, they agreed to a compact with general rules of conduct. That came to be known as the Mayflower Compact, or

the first attempt at organized self-government in America.

Among the dreams of this Christian community was a common storehouse of food, clothing and other supplies, available to colonists as needed.

Theoretically, this tight Christian community should have cooperated and prospered. The colony, however, suffered during that first winter, using up the supplies. The original leader died and was replaced by William Bradford in spring 1621. Bradford in 1623 wrote of the experience of the colony in “History of the Plymouth Plantation.”

Bradford noted some of the colonists didn’t work or contribute to the colony’s well-being, so he and other elders determined to amend the general rules of the community. Among other changes, instead of an open storehouse, now only those who worked in some form were to be offered access and supplies.

Soon after, the colony prospered, and with the help of the local Native Americans, it thrived within a few years. Or, as Bradford told it: “The failure of this experiment of communal service, which was tried for several years, and by

good and honest men proves the emptiness of the theory of Plato and other ancients applauded by some of the later times — that the taking away of private property, and the possession of it in community, by a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing, as if they were wiser than God. “For in this instance, community of property (so far as it went) was found to breed much confusion and discontent and

retard much employment, which would have been to the general benefit and comfort.

“For the young men who were most able and fit for service objected to being forced to spend their time and strength working for other men’s wives and children, without any recompense.

The strong man or the resourceful man had no more share of food, clothes, etc., than the weak man. … This was thought injustice.

“The aged and graver men, who were ranked and equalized in labour, food, clothes, etc., with the humbler and younger ones, thought it some indignity and disrespected to them.

“Let none argue that this is due to human failing, rather than to this communistic plan of life in itself. I answer, seeing that all men have this failing in them, that God in his wisdom saw that another plan of life was fitter for them.”

The resulting success story we call Thanksgiving and America.

Socialism or communism (even “democratic socialism”) has never worked as a human economic system and never will.

‘Twilight’ shines in virtual reality The pandemic closed the curtain at the Asolo Conservatory. Virtual reality turned on the lights.

heater holds a mirror up to life. But life isn’t fair, and life sometimes punches live theater in the face. Sometimes, the show doesn’t always go on. The pandemic was this year’s showstopper.

Theater troupes everywhere faced hard choices. The FSU/ Asolo Acting Conservatory was no exception.

On March 12, even Broadway went dark. A few days later, Asolo Repertory Theatre and Asolo Conservatory did too.

Greg Leaming is the conservatory’s director. He needed a Plan B. The stage was off-limits. Virtual theater was the only alternative. Which play?

Director Benny Ambush suggested a short list of relevant plays. Anna Deveare Smith’s “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992” was at the top. Her play focused on the LA riots following the acquittal of the police officers in the Rodney King beating.

The city burned for six days.

Why? What were the underlying issues? To get the answers, the playwright recorded interviews with 300 Angelenos of all descriptions. Smith distilled that to 40 transcripts of real-life

individuals and performed each character in her virtuoso, onewoman show.

Leaming instantly saw the possibilities. The second-year student-actors could play the roles. With that change, Smith’s play translated nicely to Zoom.

But format wasn’t the deciding factor. History was.

In 2020, the repetitive litany was ugly. In the spring and long, hot summer, the nightly news was a weird echo of 1992.

Different cops, different Black victims, different riots. But the script was familiar. “‘Twilight’ really speaks to our strange days,” Leaming said.

“I knew we had to do this play. I didn’t know how at first. I just knew we had to.”

Leaming knew the perfect director: Benny Ambush.

The play’s tough-minded topic was in his wheelhouse. But directing an ensemble of actors on stage is one thing; assembling a mosaic of solo performance recordings in the editing room is another. Zoom was a different animal for Ambush. It was for the actors too.

Thanks to Zoom, the world really was a stage. They rehearsed in scattered meetings on computers in apartments, offices and picnic tables.

time. He repeated the process for their final performances.

Ptah Garvin and Dayna Playa shared similar experiences.

Zoom was fun, frustrating, challenging — all of the above.

It might be the future of theater.

It might vanish with a vaccine.

Who knows? Who cares?

Zoom is a means to an end.

The play’s the thing. Period.

Both actors care for their characters. Playing Hamlet is one thing. But the people they play are real. Most are still alive.

“I feel incredibly responsi-

ble for my characters,” Garvin said. “The words I speak are the actual words they said. It’s their perspective, not mine. I try to honor that.”

Zoom offers great teaching moments. Student-actors (and two alumni) get to stretch their muscles and try out different accents and attitudes.

“If we were doing a different play, this Zoom thing might feel like a weird, grad school experience,” Playa said. “But ‘Twilight’ is so weighted and so timely. I take it very seriously.”

Ambush said there is no big lesson. And that’s the lesson.

“The LA riots was such a huge historical moment,” he said. “It’s hard to wrap your mind around it. What’s the big picture? The truth is there is no big picture. History isn’t made up of big moments. It’s a lot of small moments that were big to the people who went through it.”

As Ambush sees it, the truth is a mosaic of experiences. Conveying that truth is his goal. And the playwright’s as well.

“Anna had no preconceptions about the LA riots,” he said.

“She didn’t start with the big story. She got the story directly from the people. She pieced all their little stories together.”

Individuality also informs the director.

“I made a decision on day one,” Ambush said. “Actor and character will always share the same origin. If you’re Black, so is your character. Or Chicano, or Caucasian … and so on. Each actor always stays true to their unique identity. That’s the heartbeat of this play after all.”

With America’s entry into WWII in 1941, Shirley joined the Women’s Army Corp. (WAC). She initially served as a link instructor in Pueblo, Colorado where she met and married a pilot, Lt. Grady Hunt.

She was later assigned to the Army Airway Communication System and transferred to London enduring the dangerous and continual German bombing assault. While there she received the tragic news that her husband and his entire crew were killed when his B-24 was shot down over Holland. Upon Germany’s surrender, she was sent to Wiesbaden, Germany until her discharge in November, 1945.

After her return to the U.S., she moved with her mother to Sarasota, Florida where she married Stanley Given. Together, they owned and operated the Tail O’ The Pup Restaurants in Sarasota and Branchville, NJ. In 1963, the family moved to Deland, FL where her husband served as Executive Vice President of Ardmore Farms, the citrus division of the H.W. Given Company.

Andy was a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School (‘87) in Sarasota, and the University of West Florida (‘93). He also attended and made life-long friends at Loyola University in New Orleans and Florida State University. Andy was a long time resident of Sarasota, Florida. Andy loved adventures small and large. From study and travel in London and Europe, to the simple pleasures of hanging out with his friends, Andy’s mischievous grin always signaled fun was about to begin. Andy enjoyed fixing and making things, ranging from his first car as a teenager (a Z28), to a DIY go-kart that was a huge hit with the neighborhood kids, to other quirky fixes for his friends. Andy was a consummate sales person, and worked as a manager in Atlanta and Sarasota in financial services and consumer home products. In his free time, Andy loved golfing, spending time with friends, and fishing and boating around Sarasota Bay. We will treasure the memory of Andy smiling, joking, and laughing, on his way to his next adventure.

He prided himself on living life his way and generously shared his wisdom and passion for life with each of us leaving every life he touched in a better place for having known him.

Ronald Mark Greenbaum, 85, of Sarasota Florida, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, passed from this world peacefully on October 30, 2020.

Born October 19, 1935, Ron was the only son of his beloved parents, David and Sylvia Greenbaum, who predeceased him.

Ron graduated from Cleveland Heights High School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University Of Toledo in 1958. He was president of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, a member of Alpha Phi Gamma fraternity and a lifetime member of Blue Key National Honor Fraternity. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1956-1961. In 1958 Ron married Sheri Wexler (deceased) and they had two children, Lisa and Dana.

Ron learned early the importance of hard work and paying attention to detail.

He used his talents to build a successful chain of Friendly Discount Drugstores in the Cleveland area, which he ultimately sold to Revco in 1994. His ‘Friendly’ brand lived on in the Friendly Pool Service he later established in Sarasota. He served as Vice President of Brith Emeth Temple, and volunteered his time as a Big Brother for many years.

After the unexpected passing of his mother, Ron decided to take a different path when he saw the waves lapping up on the white sand at The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort on Longboat Key, Florida.

A short distance across the bridge into

Sarasota, Ron met Rita Caton, the love of his life, and his destiny was sealed. They were married for the happiest 35 years of their lives.

Through Ron’s compassion and leadership, he inspired and guided many others on their own path to success. He gave generously of his time and effort to support numerous nonprofit organizations. He had no bounds when it came to giving back.

Ron and Rita philanthropically supported: The Sarasota Opera, Florida Studio Theatre, The Ringling Museum, New College, The Sarasota Ballet, The Sarasota Film Society, The Humane Society, Animal Rescue Coalition, Girl’s Inc, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Foundation, Florida West Coast Symphony, Sarasota Community Video Archives, The Alzheimer’s Association, West Coast Black Theater, and The Asolo Theater.

Ron has been a dedicated Asolo Rep Board member for over three decades having joined the Board of Directors in 1989, serving as Board President for two terms.

He continued to provide leadership on the Executive Committee through his tireless efforts to increase co-producer support for Asolo Rep productions. Ron and Rita’s warm and generous hospitality at their home for the annual Season Announcement Party was legendary.

Ron loved a Wednesday men’s game of tennis and a Sunday mixed doubles with Rita and friends. He was an avid chess player and played with whoever would dare to challenge him. His mind was always three steps ahead, not only in chess, but in the way he lived his life, with focus and a well-designed plan of action.

Ron will be forever remembered for the example he set for his daughters, grandchildren and Rita’s extended family, who adored him. He had an enduring love for family and friends, excitement for life, integrity, strength of character, courage, and a wonderful sense of humor. He prided himself on living life his way and generously shared his wisdom and passion for life with each of us leaving every life he touched in a better place for having known him.

His love for his wife, Rita, his children

and grandchildren extended from Heaven on the Gulf of Mexico to the community around him. Through his generosity and giving spirit, Ron Greenbaum made a difference.

Ron is survived by his wife Rita; his daughters Lisa (Mark) Durbin, of Cleveland Ohio; Dana (Craig) Douglas, of Saint Pete Beach, Florida; and four grandchildren: Marissa, Liam and Kiara Durbin, and David Douglas.

A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at Asolo Rep Theatre in March, 2021.

riday nights at Temple Beth Israel look a little different than they used to, when a hundred or so people would gather for Shabbat dinner. But there’s still plenty of friendship and compassion to be found. On Nov. 20, the temple hosted a food drive in its grass parking lot, and volunteers gathered food and caught up with friends.

“We needed to do something, and this is a fun way to get people together,” membership committee chair Karen Gary said. “We’ve all been so isolated.”

Gary was one of the minds behind the Friday afternoon food drive, having contacted social action committee chair Alice Blueglass earlier in the summer to get things moving. All donations will go to Second Chance Last Opportunity, a Sarasota organization that offers life management skills and food pickup. Member Arlene Skversky has been active in bringing in donations for the organization.

“It’s good for socializing since we haven’t seen each other in so long,” Maxine Tauber said. “And it’s nice seeing how generous and kind people are.”

The group chatted about their best-fitting face masks and how long it had been since they had needed to wear makeup in between donors. When the donors rolled up, a team descended upon the car, lifting out groceries and making small talk. Several donors tried to get out of the car and help, but to no avail.

As the dinner pickup wound down, Barbara Pressman was the first to lead the donation caravan to the mainland. Three cars had filled up their trunks and backseats with Publix bags, cracker tins and cases of water.

“It was great, and I got to see people,” Gary said as she left.

Traditional recipes use crumbled cornbread as the base, Phillips said, and dressing is always cooked outside the turkey. Phillips adds lots of seasoning, turkey drippings and turkey gravy. The written recipe has crumbled away, and each year the dressing is made from memory.

There are classic dishes you can’t forget and can barely do without. So we asked some of your neighbors to share theirs. And if your menu is already set for Thanksgiving, we have a little secret. These dishes will bring a smile to anyone’s face any time of year. Enjoy!

BELLE OF THE (BUTTER)BALL Donna Sharp Blaney and her husband, Brian, have a turkey tradition going back to when they started dating in 1987: attaching sausages with toothpicks (only Jones breakfast sausages, Blaney noted) all over the bird before it’s cooked to help with basting. “These crunchy, yummy morsels are then served as a fun appetizer while the turkey is being carved,” Blaney said.

DON’T MARSH MY MELLOW Arlene Skversky’s mother always insisted on sweet potatoes at the table — made even sweeter. Her version included pineapple, brown sugar and orange juice mixed into the potatoes and poured over the top. The mixture was then baked and topped with baby marshmallows. “We feel that my mom is still with us, … [so] I am not brave enough to not make this dish,” Skversky said. “In fact, this year we are ordering dinner from Sol at the Embassy Suites, and he does not put pineapple in this dish, so when I get it home, in goes the pineapple.”

■ 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes ■ 3 tablespoon butter, melted ■ ½ teaspoon salt ■ ½ can of crushed pineapple, drained ■ ¼ cup orange juice ■ ¼ cup brown sugar ■ Mini marshmallows

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Peel and boil sweet potatoes, then mash. Add butter, salt and orange juice. Beat with mixer to combine. Add brown sugar and pineapple, and stir well. Bake for 40-45 minutes.

For the last 10 minutes of baking, add marshmallows on top.

For the flavors to marinate together and make the sauce the boss of the meal, the dish is made three to four weeks ahead of time, but it might be the best stuff you’ve ever had.

Catherine said she got it out of a falling-apart heirloom of a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. “It’s been a Thanksgiving staple at our house for years,” Michael said. “Honorable mention goes to her brother Mark’s wonderful apple pie with apples picked fresh from the north Georgia mountains.”

GINGERSNAP CRUST: ■ 1¼ cups finely crushed gingersnaps ■ 1/3 cup melted butter PIE FILLING: ■ 1½ cup sugar ■ 2 packets gelatin ■ ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ■ ½ teaspoon ground allspice ■ ½ teaspoon salt ■ ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ■ ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ■ ¾ cup milk ■ 2 egg yolks ■ 1 cup canned pumpkin ■ 1 cup whipping cream ■ 2 tablespoons sugar ■ Whipped cream ■ Chopped toasted pecans

■ Gingersnap crust: Coat a 9-inch nonstick pie plate with cooking spray, then combine gingersnaps and melted butter. Press into pie plate.

Cover and chill about 1 hour.

■ Pie filling: Stir together ½ cup sugar, gelatin, cinnamon, allspice, salt, ginger and nutmeg in a medium saucepan. Add milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until gelatin dissolves.

■ In a medium bowl, beat egg yolks. Stir about half of milk mixture into eggs, and return to saucepan. Stir in pumpkin, and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat, and cook and stir for two minutes. Transfer to a large bowl, cover, and chill about 30 minutes.

■ In a chilled medium bowl, beat whipping cream and sugar with chilled beaters until soft peaks form. Fold into pumpkin mixture.

■ Transfer filling to crust. Cover and chill about four hours or until set. Garnish with whipped cream and pecans.

hen looking for jobs online, Rev. Brock Patterson tried “beach pastor” as a hopeful search criterium, not knowing exactly what he’d find.

The Longboat Island Chapel came up, and after a few months, Patterson packed his truck and moved to Longboat Key from Little Rock, Ark., to live out his beach

pastor dreams. He’s the new lead pastor at the church, replacing Rev. Bill Friederich, who retired.

Patterson got quite a welcome, as Tropical Storm Eta bore down just days after he arrived. He spent one of his first mornings here packing sand bags.

“I understand tornadoes; I understand accumulation of ice and freezing rain and snow,” Patterson said. “But I do not understand what all this means.”

Patterson comes to Longboat Key at the urging of his youngest daughter, who sat him down the night before she left for college.

thing you want to do. You should do something for you [now that] you don’t have to take care of us,’” Patterson said. “I thought about it overnight, and I woke up the next morning, and … this came up. … Longboat is where God brought me.”

Patterson was once a corporate banker, but from 2009-2019, he was the founding and lead pastor at a United Methodist church but had been feeling God calling him to something new, he said. He stepped out of his position, planning only to take a sabbatical.

Of the two “beach pastor” jobs he applied for, Patterson heard from both. He came down in September for a visit.

From the first, Patterson felt a connection to the chapel, not only because of its volunteers and the congregation but also because of its leadership. Having led a church of his own, he knows what the process of replacing a pastor is like. There’s strong leadership here, but Patterson is looking forward to making his way.

“There’s a lot of opportunity here,” Patterson said. “The people are so knowledgeable, and they are so experienced, but most of all, they’re very, very faithful. I was excited about that and excited about working with that kind of leadership.”

Key Niners swing into new season he Key Niners opened their season Nov. 17 just like nearly everything else in 2020 — in a bit of a different fashion.

Instead of golf at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside course and lunch in the ballroom, the women played at the Islandside course and ate lunch under the oak trees in the club’s front lawn.

Green heron S

hould you spot a green heron that, at 1.5 feet long, with a wingspan of 2 feet, is one of our smallest heron species, you’d be justified in thinking that it really is not that green.

However, closer examination of this common, if elusive, bird, reveals its namesake glossy green back. Unlike their larger cousins, green herons usually hold their necks pulled in tight against their bodies, which makes them look stocky and compact. And tougher to spot.

A green heron’s diet includes insects, spiders, snails, crustaceans, frogs and fish. And like other herons, an agile neck is their most important foraging tool. But, perhaps due to their size (and short legs), instead of wading through the water to forage, green herons utilize a sit-andwait strategy. They’ll perch on low-hanging branches or rocks at water’s edge, sitting very still until prey is spotted. Their neck then snaps into rapid action, with their sharp bill seizing their prey.

Green herons are one of few birds that use tools to lure prey.

They drop both natural and artificial bait (including ants, flies or

Unfortunately, we are still limited on indoor class size due to the coronavirus, but we are holding exercise classes outdoors, weather permitting.

A gentle yet enlivening class designed to restore balance with your body, mind and breath. Certified Yoga instructor Cheryl Kaiser guides students through a sequence of yoga postures and movement designed for seniors of all levels. Poses can be modified safely using blocks and chairs.

Mats provided if you don’t have one.

We have a wonderful group of medical professionals practicing out of our suite: Connexis Medical Services – a sister company to Tidewell Hospice – is offering primary care two days per week, and will grow as needed. Silverstein Institute is not only providing audiology services, but also ear and sinus health on Mondays and Thursdays. Advanced Foot & Ankle Care is our podiatry provider every Wednesday. And Dr. Cary Dunn’s team from Luminary Dermatology is with us on Fridays.

Our vision for an all-encompassing wellness center is coming together! Fitness Quest Physical Therapy has a big, beautiful facility in the building. JFCS offers weekly support groups and other services for seniors.

Youthful Aging Home Care will help those who want to age in place. And, of course, The Paradise Center’s year-round activities are designed to keep us engaged with others, keep us active both mentally and physically and keep us from becoming isolated and lonely. This has become even more important during this challenging year.

Florida Red Tide has been destroying marine life and adversely affecting coastal Floridians for decades, with little understanding of its potential health risks to those in our community.
