Peafowl fugitives remain on Longboat Just how big is the current Longbeach Village flock?

A distinctive white, albino peafowl was the first to go.

Now, 10 months after it began in earnest, the thinning of the peafowl flock is nearly finished on Longboat Key. Nuisance Wildlife Removal was hired earlier in the year by Longboat Key to do the job, which once was estimated to mean catching as many as 150 peafowl.

The Bradenton-based wildlife removal company's personnel caught 61 peafowl — 28 peahens, 19 peacocks and 14 peachicks — to date. The last one was removed Oct. 21.

Three peahens and one peachick remain free, so far, but have not escaped exile entirely.

“We’re just letting the peachick get a little older,” said Nuisance Wildlife Removal Vice President Christy Norris. “We’re not sure which of the remaining females is the mother.”

Norris said the removal was a lot harder than others her firm has done, which have included bats, snakes, rats, armadillo, bees, opossum, squirrels and moles.

Some people were attached to peafowl they fed and treated like pets.

“Yes, it makes it a little bit tougher when you have people interfering, for lack of a better term,” Norris said.

Longtime Longbeach Village resident Kim Kessler said the birds came on the island as gifts when her high school classmate, Lark Pazling, married Bo Hunter.

The couple let the birds loose in advance of a hurricane, Kessler said, and nature took its course.

Kessler said the worst of the removal came July 7 during what she calls the “Great Fox Street Massacre.” She said more than one peafowl was manhandled and probably harmed during the roundup, and some people were traumatized by the incidents.

“To see the animals and the people treated they way they were was just horrific,” she said.

After the July 7 conflict between the trappers and residents, the Longboat Key Police Department was tasked with keeping the peace during subsequent roundups.

After all females are gone, as many as 12 males will stay.

“It’s been a long process, but we’re close,” said Mark Richardson, Longboat Key streets, facilities, parks and recreation manager.

In January, Longboat Key

decided to remove all peahens because they were loud, particularly during mating season, and caused property damage with their feces and talons. Traps, nets and tranquilizer darts were employed by Nuisance Wildlife Removal to catch the flighty birds beginning in June.

Some Longbeach Village residents still wonder whether any peafowl were killed in the process, which is a risk with tranquilizer guns, Kessler said.

The trappers say the darts were necessary.

“We began to use tranquilizers when they got trap-shy and human-shy because they grew to understand we’re the people taking them away,” Norris said.

The hunt became more difficult as the flock was pared down to its wiliest 10%, Richardson said.

“Now they know what our truck looks like and they won’t come near it,” Richardson said.

“They won’t go into the traps anymore, either.”

Norris emphasized none of the animals was harmed.

“We did not kill a single peacock,” Richardson said. “I was there the entire time to make sure it was done properly.”

Six of the peafowl are living at the Birds of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue in Bradenton. The rest of the flock was distributed among several private sanctuaries, Norris said.

“No one sanctuary was going to take all 61 peafowl,” she said.

Kessler said she still wants proof the peafowl have survived “their ordeal.” She said she has asked for pictures, but no one has provided any.

“We just don’t know what happened to our birds,” Kessler said. “They ate out of our hands.

They showed us their tails. They showed off their chicks. (The trappers) could at least produce photographs. There’s no proof at all our peacocks survived the onslaught.”

Landau said traffic issues peak during the season from January through April.

He notes traffic backups occur at the bridges – not in the middle of Longboat Key. One of his most important immediate solutions, Landau said, is scheduled bridge openings should be prohibited during peak traffic periods, except during emergencies.

“We should not tolerate undemanded bridge openings,” Landau said.

Landau said island residents can use several approaches to reduce traffic aggravation: n Consider alternatives to offisland trips by patronizing island businesses or not going at all. n Plan off-island trips during nonpeak periods before 10:30 a.m. and after 6:30 p.m. n Use real-time traffic tools such as Google Maps Traffic before leaving home to avoid getting stuck. n Car pool. n Shop online or on the phone. n Schedule annual and semiannual appointments outside season.

Landau also had some ideas businesses could implement, including: n Extend early bird hours to encourage eating at local restaurants by people with event tickets. n Expand medical services available on island. n Establish a park-and-ride service for Sarasota and St. Armands Circle venues. n Change work schedules to redistribute traffic through earlier start times and four-day work weeks.

He also said government could help test traffic ideas by using police, better traffic light timing and traffic cones.

“It seems so simple,” Landau said. “It’s not a new subject. But nothing is happening.”

Landau is not working alone to find traffic solutions.

Carol Soustek, of Holmes Beach, is heading a small group trying to jump-start a water taxi operation with stops at Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key and Lido Key.

uggestions, ideas and even a possible petition are gearing up as Longboat Key residents and stakeholders grow irritated with traffic again this season.

“We know many things that could be done very quickly to dramatically improve traffic flow,” said Lenny Landau, of the Longboat Key Revitalization Task Force, who frequently analyzes data pertaining to town issues.

Landau was the speaker at a Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums meeting attended by about three-dozen people Saturday at Westchester condominiums.

“Stop wishing,” he urged.

“Start doing.”

Landau called the series of increasingly costly traffic studies conducted since 1980 — which have generated 581 pages total — a “placebo” for Longboat Key. He said nothing was done after any of the studies and is pessimistic the $675,000 Florida Department of Transportation study now underway would change the pattern.

“We don’t need any other studies,” Landau said. “We know what has to be done.”

Commissioner Jack Daly agreed that past traffic studies have been shelved with no action or followup.

“I suggest that does not have to be the case with the Metropolitan Planning Organization-sponsored $675,000 FDOT Barrier Island Traffic Study,” said Daly, the town’s MPO representative.

The study was unanimously approved by MPO members from Sarasota and Manatee counties and nearby cities.

Soustek said the water taxi makes sense because it takes traffic off the road.

“The trolley works great and we’ve tried other stuff, but it always ends up on the road and you have more traffic,” she said.

“There are two other ways: water and air.”

Soustek said she wants to find a way for people to move more pleasurably around the islands.

She’s knitting together a coalition of business and community leaders to do it.

“We’ve been meeting for the last two months. The boats are lined up, and some of the sponsors are lined up,” she said. “We’re nailing down the details on it.”

She said serving Bradenton would be ideal, but doing so increases the amount of commitment and financing required to intolerable levels.

Another big issue for a water taxi operation is parking.

“The problem is where do the people park?” she said. “That’s a big part of where you have to have your access points. Parking is at a premium.”

Resort at Longboat Key Club General Manager Jeff Mayers said he, too, has a few practical solutions that could be implemented immediately.

Traffic onto and off of Longboat Key is always aggravated when the New Pass Bridge goes up at the wrong time, Mayers said.

“New Pass Bridge goes up at certain times during heavy traffic,” Mayers said. “Can we change the schedule based on the traffic we have? That’s a Coast Guard issue. If we could modify that schedule, say from 4-6 p.m., that would help traffic flow as well.”

He said the new parking garage that will be built on St. Armands Circle and the use of crossing guards on the Circle would help a lot in regulating traffic flow. He believes the guards worked well in last year’s experiment, although feedback about their effectiveness has been mixed among other stakeholders.

“Any time someone wants to cross the street, traffic comes toN a halt,” Mayers said. “That further backs up the traffic. For the pedestrians’ safety and the flow of traffic, having some type of crossing system in place based on timing would help.”

He would also post a police officer at the intersection of Tamiami Trail and Gulfstream in Sarasota, which is a gateway to the John Ringling Causeway into St. Armands Circle and eventually, Longboat Key. He said traffic lights break up the flow of vehicles, and the human ability to assess how traffic flow is best maintained would help.

“We know what times of day this is going to occur,” Mayers said, citing morning and evening rush hours. “We should add traffic control such as a police officer.

“That’s what we need to do.

We know season is upon us so it’s incumbent upon us to at least take steps to mitigate traffic.”

But the improvements don’t mean the work is done for Bayfront Park, said former Longboat Key Mayor Jim Brown, a longtime advocate for a community center on the property.

Brown, a retired architect who serves as chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board, is dissatisfied that what he describes as a dilapidated 1,500-square-foot recreation center remains on the property.

He chaired a community center advisory board committee beginning in 2003. Voters rejected a referendum that, if approved, would have allowed the town to issue bonds not to exceed $6.4 million for a community center.

The property’s future has been the subject of debate ever since.

“I’m grateful we are finally getting some work done in the park,” said Brown, whose home in Longboat Key estates overlooks the park. “I’m disappointed we’re not doing everything we wanted to do.”

The recreation center is popular and heavily used in the morning during season, Brown noted.

“There is a need for a rec center and, as long as I’m here, I’ll push for it to happen,” Brown vowed.

He believes Sarasota County added too much to the end project. The county, which owns a 3.88-acre parcel adjacent to the park, provided $2 million for the project.

“I think we’re spending money we don’t need to spend,” Brown said. “It’s a little more grandiose than we need.”

Longboat Key planners want to ensure there will always be a restaurant at 4120 Gulf of Mexico Drive, where the former Pattigeorge’s Restaurant operated from 1977 until it closed in June.

The former 7,241-square-foot waterfront restaurant soon will be torn down. The Columbia Restaurant Group is redeveloping the site as a 200-seat eatery yet to be named.

On Thursday, in the first Longboat Key Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting of 2016, the board unanimously granted two variance requests for the site with one condition: The approval applies only to restaurant uses.

Any other proposed commercial ventures would start over in obtaining town approval.

The variance requests the board granted: n The 52 parking space lengths were shortened from 20 to 18 feet long. n The required 50-foot rear setback from Sarasota Bay was waived. The building will be set right on the waterfront. The dock now hangs 20 feet over Florida state waters.

over the water,” said Senior Planner Steve Schield.

Columbia Restaurant Group President Richard Gonzmart, 63, said the new 7,184-square-foot restaurant would cost up to $4 million to build.

The four ZBA members lauded the plan, which means an aging, nonconforming 54-year-old building with foundation problems will be replaced by a new eatery with improved water access.

Schield said the Shore on Longboat Key, a restaurant under construction at 800 Broadway in the Longbeach Village, and Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and Pub next door to the Shore, are the only other commercial uses on

the island with the same zoning as the Columbia property.

Gonzmart has not yet released a name or a concept for his new dining space. He bought the property for $1.9 million in June.

Site plans have been filed with the Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Department, according to Director Alaina Ray. LBK Real Estate Holding LLC, of Tampa, filed its application for the variances Oct. 6.

The new facility will be flood protected, promote public access to the waterfront and offer pedestrian and bicycle access to Bayfront Park, according to Matthew Campo, of Campo Engineering in Tampa. Bayfront Park is set to

open in 2017.

Campo did not say when construction would begin.

In other action: n Larry Linhart was reappointed to the board. n Chairman Gaele Berthold and Vice Chairman Linhart were reappointed to ZBA leadership posts, while board member Ann Roth was appointed ZBA secretary. n The ZBA will meet next at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15 if required. If no agenda item surfaces, the meeting could be canceled. Before Thursday, the last ZBA meeting was Oct. 15, 2015.

GRATITUDE FOR OUR LIBERTIES The persecution of the Pilgrims before they celebrated their first Thanksgiving has many parallels to today’s events. They make us thankful for the liberties we enjoy.

T

hanksgiving Day, as it is meant to do, kindles in us great gratitude for what we have — for our families and friends and the blessings bestowed on us. And it’s a day many of us pray that God continues to look with favor on us and especially on those who are less fortunate than we.

Thanksgiving is also a time to take stock. To look beyond the moment and the golden turkey and reflect.

We do this every year here. We like to retell the story and roots of Thanksgiving because this story of our forefathers — the Pilgrims — helps reset our compass. It reminds us how we came to be — the New Hope in the New World. It reminds us of who we are. And it reminds us of the price our ancestors paid to be free.

PERSECUTION OF THE PILGRIMS

The roots of Thanksgiving Day go far deeper than the story of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony in 1622. Yes, they were thankful to God for their bountiful harvest and their newfound Indian friends. But if you can imagine yourself in the shoes of any of the original 102 Pilgrims who sailed from Leyden, Holland, for America, a land unknown, and who survived that tumultuous journey, followed by two years of near starvation, your gratitude simply for being alive would put a whole new perspective on Thanksgiving. It was far more than being thankful for a big fall harvest and feast.

Seldom, if ever, do we focus in our history texts on the details that compelled the Pilgrims — also known as Separatists, Puritans and Calvinists — to set sail. The textbooks typically mention they fled religious persecution. But especially today, in this world of widespread and horrific religious persecution, it’s instructive to remember the details of why the Pilgrims mustered the courage to cross the Unknown Ocean for freedom — for religious freedom.

In his 500-page, handwritten account of Plymouth Plantation, Gov. William Bradford wrote how his fellow Calvinists in England became “hunted and persecuted on every side, so as their former afflictions were but as flea-bitings in comparison of these which now came upon them.

“For some were taken and clapped up in prison, others had their houses beset and watched night and day, and hardly escaped their hands; and most were faine to flee and leave their houses and habitations, and the means of their livelehood,” Bradford wrote.

After a year of this and meeting in secret to practice their worship of God, they saw “they could no longer continue in this condition,” and “resolved to get over into Holland.” The people of Amsterdam, they had heard, accepted the free practice of religion.

MISERY WORSE THAN DEATH

But sailing 200 miles to Amsterdam was no small matter. It was a monumental ordeal. Bradford describes the fear many of the Separatists had of leaving England, as bad as it was, as “a misery worse than death.”

“But these things did not dismay them — for their desires were set on the ways of God and to enjoy his ordinances,” Bradford wrote.

The trip to Holland was horrible for many. Chartered ship operators, once at sea with the Separatists, robbed them; ransacked their belongings; molested many of the women; and then sailed back into the original port and turned over the Separatists to local authorities, who then imprisoned them.

Amazingly, the Separatists didn’t give up. “Some few shrunk at these first conflicts and sharp beginnings,” Bradford wrote, “yet many more came on with fresh courage and greatly animated others. And in the end, notwithstanding all these storms of opposition, they all got over at length.”

For 12 years, the Calvinist-Separatist-Pilgrims lived and practiced their religion in freedom and peace in Leyden, an area within Amsterdam where many of them became weavers.

And then the trouble began again.

Bradford wrote of “Arminians, who greatly molested the whole state”; and university professors and other preachers who began to slander the Pilgrims’ religious practices. The tormenting rose to such a level that Bradford said some of his neighbors preferred being in prison in England

than “this liberty in Holland, with these afflictions.”

Distressed by the increasing abuse, the Separatists’ elders began to look ahead. They believed within a few years they “were fearful either to be entrapped or surrounded by their enemies” and unable to flee.

What’s more, they worried about their children. It was common for them to labor long hours in the mills, “their bodies bowed under the weight.” Many children also were falling to the temptations of youthful “licentiousness” and being drawn into “extravagant and dangerous courses,” Bradford wrote. Parents saw “their posterity would be in danger to degenerate and be corrupted.”

At the same time, many of the Separatists looked outward and spoke among their neighbors of “advancing the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in those remote parts of the world,” Bradford wrote.

All three of these influences — persecution, the well-being of their families’ future generations and spreading God’s word — combined to motivate the Pilgrims to seek a new beginning. As they discussed their options, Bradford wrote, “It was answered … the difficulties were many, but not invincible.”

So they set sail to a land unknown.

Bradford wrote of “winds so fierce and the seas so high,” and the Mayflower “shroudly shaken” and leaky, raising the constant fear the ship would sink and they would perish at sea.

When they finally stepped on land in the Cape Cod harbor, Bradford wrote, the Pilgrims “fell upon their knees and blessed the God of heaven, who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof.”

FEW GRASP OUR GOOD FORTUNE

This story of extraordinary courage and religious persecution has its parallels today all over the world, albeit worse than it was for the Pilgrims: public beheadings; corpses hanging from scaffolding; children forced to use severed human heads as soccer balls; girls taken as sex slaves; Christians burned alive in churches.

Sadly, too few Americans — especially those protesting the president-elect — seem to grasp just how fortunate we are. Let them protest; it’s their right. But on this Thanksgiving weekend, we will be grateful for the many and precious liberties we enjoy.

pleased to confer upon us.

St. Armands Circle businesses and property owners remain eager about plans for a new parking garage in the area.

City staff is working on finalizing an agreement with a project architect and contractor.

After reviewing proposals, the city is negotiating with KimleyHorn and Associates to design the project and Jon F. Swift Construction to build the structure.

Parking Manager Mark Lyons said staff hopes to present contracts to the City Commission for final review Dec. 5, though the process is subject to delay. The St. Armands stakeholders involved with selecting the companies were happy with both firms.

The last segment of John Ringling Boulevard to be improved is the Coon Key Bridge, which is set to be replaced in 2020.

Ohrenstein said the City Commission likely won’t consider the final plans until next summer.

Staff hopes to begin construction in fall 2017, ideally completing the project in the winter and avoiding major impacts during season.

The Florida Department of Transportation is providing a $1 million grant toward the project costs. Ohrenstein said it’s too early to know finer details about the construction but said the city would be in touch with residents when plans are finalized.

“We’ll have a traffic plan developed that will help address the access issues,” Ohrenstein said.

“There’s always going to be some inconvenience when there’s construction, but what we do is coordinate with property owners to make sure access is maintained during key times.”

he city of Sarasota is designing a $1.7 million project to make John Ringling Boulevard walkable from the mainland to St. Armands Circle.

The city held a public workshop Nov. 3 to discuss plans for the Coon Key Multi-Use Recreational Trail, or MURT. The project involves adding 10-foot-wide sidewalks between the Coon Key Bridge and Washington Boulevard, connecting the Circle to the segment of the MURT already in place on Bird Key. Assistant City Engineer Daniel Ohrenstein said the MURT was a top-ranked project when the city asked residents to prioritize multimodal improvements last year.

“We’ve developed our bicycle and pedestrian plans, and the goal is for this to be that missing link,” Ohrenstein said. “To connect one of the major segments along that portion of roadway.”

The audience gathered to hear the presentation at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church expressed

an interest in improved walkability, but the group was not without its concerns. The plans include the removing a series of Australian pines along the John Ringling Causeway, an invasive species that some residents say provides much-needed shade.

Ohrenstein said the plan was to plant a mixt of native trees with the intent of providing the same level of coverage as the Australian pines, though some in the audience expressed skepticism about that claim.

“It should be similar,” Ohrenstein said. “I don’t think the trees we’re proposing will grow quite as tall, but I think they’ll grow to about 40 feet at mature height.

One of our major goals for the new landscaping is to help shade the path and shade the bus shelters.”

The city isn’t going it alone when it comes to creating the new sidewalks. The Sarasota Yacht Club has already constructed a wider walkway in front of its property, and Plymouth Harbor’s plans for expansion mandates that the retirement community do the same.

Before the youngsters met Josh, they read the book and took an oath to always stay safe around the water. They discussed what they learned, and then they danced with Josh the Otter to the song “Learn to Float,” a tune that reinforces the lesson.

Josh was greeted with squealing, giggling and jumping. The kindergartners hugged him, petted him and danced. But behind their wide eyes and big grins, a serious lesson was being engrained in their minds.

For Tuttle Principal Tomas Dinverno, combining water safety with education is important.

The school’s second-graders participate in a swimming program through Girls Inc., but starting water education earlier enhances safety awareness, he said.

Not only is Josh the Otter helping students learn about water safety, he’s pairing it with reading at a time when the kindergartners are learning about decision- making and how to sound out letters and words.

“It’s combining the mission of Josh the Otter with what we’re trying to do with literacy and realworld examples,” Dinverno said.

The Longboat Key Rotary Club and Tuttle have a strong relationship. The club does a food pantry, reading program and backpack labeling program for the school. It was at a food pantry event during the summer that Rozance reached out to Dinverno about Josh the Otter. Rozance said she hopes the Rotary Club can bring Josh the Otter to other schools.

“What an easy message to deliver in a place that has so much water,” Rozance said.

Out with the ‘old’ for 50-plus fitness The newest vocabulary and thinking is all about active aging for those ages 50 and up.

T

he fitness industry is devoting ever more attention to the age 50-plus market. It is certainly not a new segment.

That great, big baby boom generation started to turn 50 some 20 years ago. Today, more than 10,000 people in the USA alone celebrate a 65th birthday daily, and there is growing recognition and response to their special needs.

One example is the new Active Aging Certification offered

by SCW Fitness Education, a Chicago-based company that trains fitness professionals. It was summer school for me this year, and without trying to cram eight hours of classroom time and a 150-page manual into a half page newspaper column,

here are some of the most useful concepts from the program.

NEW VOCABULARY

You may notice the absence of the word “seniors” from the lead paragraph. It seems that folks just don’t like being called “seniors.” (Recall that Sarasota’s Senior Friendship Centers changed its name to just Friendship Centers a couple of years ago.) The trick has been to find a substitute. SCW is attempting to establish “active agers” as the term for people 50 and older, and “Active Aging Movement Coach” or “AAMC” for personal trainers and group movement leaders who specialize in their needs.

Is this a good and necessary change? Would you prefer to think of yourself as an “active ager” rather than a “senior?”

Whatever you call it, we know for certain that physically and mentally active individuals live longer, healthier, happier lives.

And it can’t hurt to be reminded of that on an ongoing basis.

SCW would also like to banish the word “old.” One proponent is Bernadette O’Brien, an 85-years-young AAMC. She is SCW’s oldest certified trainer.

The classes for active agers that she teaches in her home state of New Jersey routinely sell out.

O'Brien says, “We are not old but ‘chronologically enriched,’ and I only want to be called a ‘senior’ when it involves receiving a discount.”

It isn’t easy changing language, but if it helps change attitudes and awareness, it is worth a shot.

EMPHASIS ON BALANCE

The holy trinity of fitness has always been cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength and endurance and flexibility – and trainers have had to struggle to get clients to pay attention to the third. For the over-50 population, we need to add balance.

The physical and mental changes of chronological aging include everything from osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and sarcopenia (the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function) to memory loss and what we jokingly call adult attention deficit disorder and more, and they make active agers more at risk of falling. The NYC Mass Transit Authority reported in January, “74% of accidents in and around New York City subway stations are not from trains at all but from falls, trips and slips of people over 50.”

Studies also show that older people have the highest risk of death or serious injury arising from a fall, and the risk increases with age. Bottom line: If you are over 50, you should include movement specifically directed at improving your balance in your exercise routine.

STAY HYDRATED

For whatever reason — simply

forgetting to drink, worrying about incontinence, a decrease in the sensation of thirst – active agers are often less than adequately hydrated. This is especially risky because dehydration can contribute to joint and muscular instability, leading to increased risk of falling. Your water bottle is your friend; don’t leave home without it.

The physical changes associated with chronological aging also put a premium on warming up properly. To do otherwise is to increase your risk of injury. In a class, that means one-third to onefourth of the class time, or 11 to 13 minutes for a 55-minute class. The same proportion applies to any kind of workout.

Ted Weiller remembered as friend, philanthropist

Between the Sarasota Ballet and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, Ted Weiller’s passion was felt throughout the community.

“If he believed in you or the organization, he didn’t just throw a check down,” said family friend Melvy Lewis. “He gave up his time and wanted everyone else to love the organization like he did.”

Weiller, 85, of Bird Key, died Nov. 17.

Weiller and his wife, Jean, were involved in a car crash in October in Massachusetts. Weiller died of complications from injuries suffered in the crash. Jean Weiller remains hospitalized.

The passion he had for many community organizations translated into friendships as well.

Lewis said Weiller was a philanthropic man who laughed easily and always tried to help friends in any way.

Family friend Mary Lou Winnick remembers him similarly.

“He would try to intervene in one way or another to make life easier for people,” Winnick said.

Through Winnick, Jean Weiller said her husband always supported and contributed to the arts, but his true passion was to help children with anything that would make their lives easier.

That’s why he was a supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. He joined the corporate board of directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County in 2015.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County is devastated to have learned the news of Ted Weiller’s passing,” said Jaime DiDomenico, Boys & Girls Club board chairman. “Ted was a board member, longtime supporter and truly had a heart for the children we serve.

He will be deeply missed.”

Weiller was in his second year on the Sarasota Ballet board, serving on the investment committee. He was a donor and supporter of the ballet for more than 20 years.

He was instrumental in making it possible for the company last summer to appear at Jacob’s Pillow, a dance center, school and performance space located in Becket, Mass.

“Ted was one of the first people to pick up the phone and welcome me to Sarasota and has been a supporter of the ballet in so many significant ways,” Sarasota Ballet

Director Iain Webb said in a statement. “Margaret (Barbieri, assistant director) and I are deeply saddened at his passing and our hearts go out to his wife, Jean.”

Born in 1931 in New York City, he graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1952 after majoring in business administration. For 30 years, he was the owner and president of Weilwood Industries, a textile converting business, which he sold in 1990.

Weiller was a sponsor to several students at the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

In October 2014, the Ted and Jean Weiller Rehearsal Hall was dedicated to the couple in recognition of their gifts to the Asolo.

In addition to his wife, Weiller is survived by brother, Peter; sons, Bruce and his wife, Shari, and Jeffrey and his wife, Melissa; stepdaughter Donna Pickup; and four grandchildren.

A memorial will be announced at a later date.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT St. Mary members start their holiday shopping early at Christmas Bazaar.

S

t. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church brought the Christmas spirit to Longboat Key a little early this year.

The church hosted its annual Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 19.

The bazaar featured items ranging from homemade baked goods and Christmas trees to clothing and stuffed animals. All the money raised from the event goes to various local charities and Catholic schools.

About 50 members of the church’s Women’s Guild volunteered their time Saturday morning to work the event. The ladies began preparing for the bazaar in June. They met once a week to go through the donated items. A week before the event, they began organizing and pricing the items.

Throughout the months of preparation, the ladies formed some strong friendships. Carol Fischbein, an event organizer, said her favorite part of the bazaar was the women with whom she worked.

“We just have some really delightful women,” Fischbein said.

Dee Tornillo, who helped organize the bazaar, said the camaraderie of those involved is one of her favorite parts as well. Her other favorite part?

“Seeing all these people and putting a smile on their face,” she said.

Whether you’re a tennis pro or new to the game, the Observer Challenge tennis tournament is an opportunity to take part in some friendly competition.

The tournament will kick off with a cocktail party beginning at 4:30 Dec. 8 at the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center, 590 Bay Isles Road. The cocktail party will be catered by Harry’s Continental Kitchens and will feature an exhibition game, though who will be playing it is still undetermined.

The tournament usually brings about 100 players to the courts, mostly Longboat Key residents.

Tournament action officially begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

Games will go until 4 p.m. the first day and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday. Finals will be held Sunday, Dec. 11.

Players can compete in singles and mixed matches. It will be up to each team to decide who plays what match.

Bird Key Yacht Club celebrates its commodore

W

ith Chanel-themed vases on the tables, Eiffel Tower replicas placed throughout the club and light pink umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, Bird Key Yacht Club brought its members to Paris.

Bird Key held its annual Commodore’s Ball Nov. 12 to honor its current commodore, Lynn Smith.

For the past 10 months, Smith has been a head figure for the club’s leadership board.

“This is a special night, and I feel appreciated,” Smith said.

After enjoying a cocktail hour, the 140 members moved to the dining room where Vice Commodore Charlie Wilson greeted them.

He spoke of Smith and her time as commodore. He said the biggest legacy she’ll leave is her warmth and hospitality.

Smith took to the podium recalled when she and her husband, Kendall, joined the club four years ago without knowing anyone.

Smith said when she looked at all the faces around the room she was reminded how grateful she was.

“I’m reminded of the honor it has been to be your commodore for the last 10 months,” she said.

eason is here, and the Longboat Key Club Women’s Golf Association is teeing up for some busy winter months.

The association held its opening luncheon Nov. 8, but not before its members enjoyed a round of golf at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside golf course. Eighty-four members played the course before chowing down on pasta, salad, cold-poached salmon and dessert.

Association President Suzanne Reiman welcomed the members back and reminded them to be thankful they had the chance to all be together.

Janet Love, Becky Smothers, Arlene McKitrick and Uschi Cooper won first place with a gross total of 61.9.
