Happy 100th!

Longboat Key resident Mildred Clark turned 100 on Nov. 15 and said she just wants to keep going.

“If you don’t have anything wrong with you, you’ve got to be happy for that,” Clark said.

Clark spends a lot of time with her great-granddaughters, who are 12 and 17 years old.

She said they keep her on the go. Every morning, Clark spends time playing the Wordscapes app, which makes the day go by fast. However, when you’re 100, everything starts going faster, she said.

The family will celebrate with some other loved ones in town and a Roaring ’20s themed party to match the decade of Clark’s birth.

Happy birthday, dear town There are a lot of things older than the town. Sports Illustrated, electric drip-brew coffee makers, Tupperware, Silly Putty and about 60% of the town’s own residents.

Still, the town on Sunday celebrated its 66th birthday.

At the time the town was incorporated, about 215 people lived on the island, and only about a third of it was developed. Also at the time it was incorporated, which was also when it changed its name from Longbeach to Longboat Key, the average current resident was entering kindergarten.

Today, nearly 7,000 people call Longboat home on a permanent basis. And their average age is 71.

Town delays cell-plan discussion until 2022 Verizon Wireless proposed building nine small-cell poles and antennas to improve Key’s cell signal.

Concerns about the placement of nine small-cell system poles on the north end of Longboat Key prompted the town’s Planning and Zoning Board to put off discussion until 2022 to allow Verizon Wireless to respond.

Planning and Zoning Board Chair David Green had heard hours of discussion on Tuesday about whether to approve Verizon’s plan to erect the poles to improve the north end’s cell service. Aesthetics and concerns about potential health effects drove the opposition.

Green, a north-end resident and Verizon customer, said he had to balance finding a solution to address spotty cell service on the north end while considering residents’ concerns.

“To not have a live cellphone coverage in today’s world on the north end of the island is unacceptable long term,” Green said. “That’s where I come down.”

Green suggested continuing the P&Z board’s discussion once Verizon makes some changes to its initial plan. He said the work product was “not complete yet.”

“I don’t want you to feel like you’re not wanted on the island,” Green told Verizon representatives on Tuesday.

“We need you. You’re the only carrier who stepped up so far, so I commend you for that.”

On Tuesday, the P&Z board voted 6-0 to continue its public hearing with Verizon. The board is set to address the issue again at 9:15 a.m.

Feb. 15.

P&Z board member Paul Hylbert recused himself from the vote because he lives within 40 feet of one of the nine proposed pole locations.

Verizon senior network consultant Kerry Burrows acknowledged a “domino effect” if the company begins moving proposed pole locations.

“When we start moving them around, it changes things,” Burrows said.

Sea Pines treasurer and board member Matt Schroeder didn’t believe Verizon’s claim.

“Verizon might say, ‘Well, they’re

all interdependent,’” Schroeder said.

“This is the vaunted Verizon network. I’m sure Verizon with their vaunted network can figure out how to do this on the north end.”

The poles would help improve coverage for Verizon users only, which the town uses for public safety purposes.

“We have spoken to T-Mobile, and we have spoken to AT&T,” Public Works Director Isaac Brownman said. “At this point, T-Mobile has not shown any interest to come out and do any enhancements at this point.

It’s not to say that they wouldn’t.

“AT&T has shown some interest, but those negotiations, those discussions are still in progress.”

Burrows said Verizon did not intend to let other carriers use Verizon’s poles.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney denied that approving Verizon’s proposals could create a monopoly.

“Any provider could come in,” Mooney said. “I mean the availability … for a provider to come in still exists under our code. They just have to decide to do it, and obviously, we can’t make providers come to the town of Longboat Key.”

Schroeder said he was pleased with the P&Z board’s decision Tuesday.

“The Planning and Zoning Board struck the right balance,” Schroeder said. “There is a need for this, but they weren’t convinced. I think the public wasn’t convinced, and I would hope that Verizon would use the time to focus on coming up with a structure that puts it in commercial places and not residential ones.”

Earlier this month, Schroeder said, he was walking home from dinner when he saw a posted notice of plans to build a Verizon pole near his condominium.

Schroeder’s proximity to one of the nine proposed poles prompted him to write an email to Town Hall.

Schroeder wanted to see Verizon reconsider its pole placements.

Specifically, he wanted to see the proposed pole nearest his condo get moved across the street. It would put the proposed pole closer to Whitney Plaza.

“I am the closest unit to this tower,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder was also among residents who claimed the poles’ placement would adversely affect their property values. Another consistent

complaint residents had was the proposed poles are not consistent with the area.

“I am much more hopeful than I was even a week ago,” Schroeder said. “A week ago, I was pessimistic.”

Before the P&Z board considered agent Shane Thorson’s proposal on behalf of Verizon to build the nine poles, the Town Commission voted unanimously Monday to approve changes to the Town Code about regulations to pole-mounted equipment. The commission approval was necessary to allow equipment that doesn’t meet town size standards for installation on poles.

The changes allow the town to increase the maximum size of equipment attached to utility poles to 6 feet in height, 2 feet in width and 2 feet in depth. Before Monday’s changes, the code has the following dimensions: 4 feet in height, 1 foot in width and 1 foot in depth.

The changes also address how close poles can be from each other.

Poles can now be no closer than 60 feet from adjacent lighting built by the town or another free-standing wireless pole.

ONE COUNTY Shifting all of Longboat into Sarasota or Manatee has been talked about for years. Two county commissioners and a new state report make clear the difficulties.

S

arasota County Commissioner Christian Ziegler and Manatee County Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge each said they would love to see all of Longboat Key in their counties.

And why not? Longboat Key is one of the state’s most affluent towns, racking up about $6.5 billion in property values in 2021, which was up nearly 6% from 2020. An $800 million condo and hotel project just broke ground, and an upstart social media company just announced plans to move its headquarters to the island as part of a $50 million plan.

But despite years of conversation at the town level and a measure of cooperation between the town and both counties on a laundry list of recent projects — and discussions about even more — both commissioners whose districts include the town say a switch isn’t likely soon.

If ever.

“I don’t see it changing,” Van Ostenbridge said. “As much as I would love to bring Longboat Key into Manatee County, I think that it is far too cumbersome a task to pull off.”

Ziegler said such a plan needs an influential leader to navigate the fiscal, political and organizational obstacles at the state levels, not to mention the county level on both sides of the border that runs essentially west from University Parkway on the mainland through the island just north of Bayfront Park, splitting the town roughly two-thirds in Sarasota and one-third in Manatee.

“You need someone to champion the next step, right?” he said. “You really need someone strong to push it through.”

STATE REPORT DELIVERED

At the town’s request, the state’s Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability delivered a report on Oct. 4 about the challenges Longboat faces in its two-county existence, for the first time organizing them in one document.

The 34-page report makes no recommendations, simply stating three options: n Maintain the status quo as a twocounty town, like several others in Florida. n Consolidate into Sarasota County n Consolidate into Manatee County.

Mayor Ken Schneier added a fourth: “I would say the fourth option is to not make any firm decision on which direction to take.”

And it’s not like the town population is clamoring for change. Longboat Key receives receive high marks each year among the residents who fill out the town’s annual citizen survey, a process started under Town Manager Tom Harmer to help set priorities.

cult picture of Longboat Key trying to make itself go into one county, whether Sarasota or Manatee, that the process would be difficult — partly due to finances and partly due to politics,” Schneier said.

At the center of the issue are winners and losers. A one-county switch without some kind of financial settlement or land swap, as has been done in other towns in Florida, would ultimately cut into either Manatee or Sarasota’s bottom line.

“I would have liked to see a little bit of a path forward of, ‘Do this and then this and this’ to advance the discussions and the options and the recommendations, but they didn’t go down that path,” Harmer said of the state report, adding that all there is left is to continue discussions on both sides of the border, like the town has since then-Town Manager Dave Bullock raised the idea in 2017.

COUNTY TAX RATES

In 2020, Manatee County levied $32.2 million in taxes on Longboat Key properties, and Sarasota County levied $61.5 million, though Sarasota’s millage rate is lower.

For a Gulfside property with a $1 million tax value, the Manatee County assessment would be $16,992, and the Sarasota County assessment would be $14,904.

“In that example, you would have two homes in the same town paying two different tax rates,” Ziegler said.

“So I understand why there would be a concern.”

Van Ostenbridge explained the rationale for Manatee County’s higher rates with some of the services the county provides. He said it includes islandwide red tide cleanup and upgrading sewage lines.

“Different counties are producing different levels of service,” Van Ostenbridge said.

While Manatee County handles the town’s utility water and wastewater, 911 calls in Longboat Key are directed to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

“I think it all starts with the citizens on Longboat Key need to have

their voice heard, right?” Ziegler said. “They probably play the most important role in all of this. So in the example of having one home paying more taxes than the other, once you realize that, and you start talking about it, you got to generate interest and get the word out.”

Ziegler noted a move to one county would also require getting Florida lawmakers on board. That requires legislative consensus from local and county leaders in Manatee and Sarasota.

The increased property tax rates aren’t the only financial complication Longboat Key could create if it were to move to one county.

SCHOOL TAXES

In the academic year 2020-2021, the School District of Manatee County received $13.9 million from Longboat Key property owners, representing 4.5% of the district’s property tax revenue. Sarasota County Schools received $28.7 million from Longboat Key property owners, representing 7.6% of the district’s property tax revenue.

At the beginning of the 2021-22 academic year, the town reported 71 students attend public school from Longboat Key. About 44,000 students attend public school in Sarasota; about 50,000 do in Manatee.

“For the money they contribute, I mean, we could put all of those kids on a Learjet and fly them to Dubai for a private education and bring them home every weekend, and we’d still have money left over,” Van Ostenbridge said.

Each school district receives a disproportionately high share of tax support from Longboat Key residents due to the high taxable value of properties in town and the small number of students on the island.

Longboat Key pays into the school districts on both ends compared to how few students (from Longboat attend) those schools,” Ziegler said.

However, Van Ostenbridge mentioned how Manatee County voters, including those in Longboat Key, voted to approve the continuation 1-mill property tax to help fund teacher salaries and longer school days.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS OF CONSOLIDATION

If Longboat Key were to move to one county, at least one of two things would likely need to happen: n A gradual payment from one county to the other to acquire the land, which includes the school districtrelated tax. n A land swap, though it could be difficult to find comparable land.

In a land swap, consider if Longboat Key moved entirely to Sarasota County. Property owners in the land Manatee County would receive in exchange would be subject to higher property tax rates.

Also, a one-time payment would likely be too difficult for a county to endure in a single fiscal year.

Longboat Key is one of four Florida municipalities in two counties: n Fanning Springs is in Gilchrist and Levy counties. n Flagler Beach is in Flagler and Volusia counties. n Marineland is in St. Johns and Flagler counties.

The OPPAGA report mentions a county boundary change in 2009 to transfer about 1,949 acres of unincorporated land from southwest Palm Beach to Broward. The counties also agreed to a one-time payment of $331,471.

The report also mentions a 2013 change when about 129 acres of residential land changed from St. Lucie County to Martin County. The counties agreed on a gradual payment for a 10-year period.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

“If we’re not going to take a position, what are we going to do?” Schneier asked.

Schneier said the town will continue working with the counties, which includes Manatee’s $2.69 million to the town’s beach maintenance groin project at Greer Island and Sarasota County’s $2 million contribution to open Bayfront Park a few years ago.

Harmer acknowledged how it can be frustrating for Longboat Key town staff and residents to deal with two counties providing services.

“I think (OPPAGA) validated what we previously said,” he said. “A path forward would have been good, but that’s not the way they wrote the report, so we’ll just have to further our discussions with the two counties now that we have the report.”

The Longboat Key Town Commission will continue to look familiar in 2022.

Commissioners Mike Haycock, BJ Bishop and Maureen Merrigan submitted documentation and collected enough petition signatures to qualify for the Town Commission elections.

No one else filed to run against them before the noon Monday deadline, making them commissioners-elect.

“When you run for commissioner against someone, you have to raise money, you got to ask your friends for money, (you) got to spend time advertising, and so on.” Haycock said. “So not having to do that (is) terrific.”

Haycock and Bishop’s at-large seats are for three-year terms.

“In my almost now 16 years of serving in Longboat Key both at the Planning and Zoning Board and the Town Commission, this has been one of the best commissions that I have ever had the privilege to work with,” Bishop said. “I think we have a great group, most of whom served

with me at Planning and Zoning. So I think that we have the ability to get a lot done and look at the future of this community in a very big-picture way.”

Merrigan’s District 5 seat is for one year to fill the term of former Commissioner Ed Zunz, who resigned in March after moving to a new condominium.

“I did make a commitment to finish Ed’s term, and his term goes for two years,” Merrigan said. “I think there’s really great momentum with this group of commissioners in terms of the initiatives we’re pursuing, the ability to get things done that are important for the Key.” Starting in 2023, the District 5 seat will be for a three-year term.

The town would have held a general election March 8, 2022, had anyone decided to run against Haycock, Bishop or Merrigan.

In April, the Town Commission appointed Merrigan over former Commissioner Gene Jaleski and campaign consultant Christopher Carman to fill the void left by Zunz.

Merrigan said she was appreciative of her connection to the LBK North community group, which represents 20-plus homeowner and condominium associations.

“To be able to, once a month, tap into that group and get a sense of what is an issue and what isn’t an issue is really helpful,” Merrigan said.

Schneier mentioned during last month’s Town Commission retreat that he had spoken with a family interested in the town center stage naming rights but did not specify with whom he spoke.

“It’s an enormous step forward,” Schneier said. “I realize that the town center vision started some almost 20 years ago, and it’s really beyond belief that we’re ever going to get this done with really good people and for the whole cost.”

Harmer said construction is due to start this fiscal year and that the contractor would work around upcoming events at the site. He also echoed Schneier’s sentiment, calling the Karons’ donation “huge.”

“Next year, when we’re talking about the 2023 season and events there, we’ll have a brand new stage in place, and that really will add to the type of events that we can have,” Harmer said. “It will raise the bar on the activity on the property. So the timing is great because we’re in this other process that it can run parallel with.”

Longboat Key Mayor Ken Schneier said he doesn’t know why exactly he thought to speak with Paul and Sarah Karon about the naming rights of the town center stage.

“When this first came up as an opportunity, I thought of them,” Schneier said. “And I can’t tell you exactly why it came to my mind to speak with them, but I talked to Paul and Sarah, and then they met with … Jim Brown and the (Longboat Key) Foundation, Tom (Harmer) and myself,” Schneier said. “(We) just hit it off. (We are) very, very fortunate.”

During Monday’s Town Commission meeting, Town Manager Tom Harmer announced the Karons would donate up to $500,000 to fund and design the construction of the town center stage in exchange for its naming rights.

“We’ll bring to the commission a naming rights agreement as part of the donation,” Harmer said. “Then we would look at naming the stage based on the donor, so we would work with the donor on a proposed name.”

Harmer said the Town Commission is set to consider a naming rights draft agreement during its Dec. 6 meeting.

“The commission reserves the right to name town property, and this is an opportunity, because of the significance of the donation, for them to have a naming rights (agreement) associated with their donation,” Harmer said.

Harmer said the commission would only need to vote on the measure once because it’s an agreement and not an ordinance.

Schneier said he has known the Karons for four to five years and considers them “close personal friends.”

ulf of Mexico Drive could look notably different if state and local authorities follow through on concept plans to remake the island’s thoroughfare with safety and aesthetics in mind.

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to add two new styles of crosswalk signals to GMD in the next two years, a roundabout is in the works for GMD and Broadway Street, and there are plans to add a left turn lane to access the Country Club Shores neighborhood.

Beyond those in-the-works plans, broader changes are under consideration that could change the look and experience for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

“When the FDOT is going to come in here in the next several years to do a resurfacing project along Gulf of Mexico Drive, which will be likely to come in phases, … the 10-mile corridor will not be done all at once, but it’s a good idea to be ready,” KimleyHorn Senior Planner Colleen McGue said. “Having an adopted plan and vision for the corridor really helps when that federal money starts to flow here related to that infrastructure bill.”

While the proposed crosswalk near Bayfront Park would have red lights to get cars to stop for pedestrians crossing the street, the lights in front of the Country Club Shores IV North entrance would remain yellow.

Kimley-Horn is working with the state on the design of the proposed GMD-Broadway roundabout, according to McGue. McGue joined Kimley-Horn this summer after working as the city of Sarasota’s chief transportation planner from February 2018 to July 2021.

She explained the firm’s plans using a complete streets approach to town commissioners Monday.

“When I use that term, we’re talking about a design that’s based on the adjacent land uses and also the character of your community,” McGue said. “It gives us the opportunity to address multiple problems — deliveries, congestion, safety for bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians and really improving mobility and access for all users of the roadway.”

April’s annual citizen survey found strong support for enhancements to pedestrian crossings, medians, landscaping and bike lanes. However, it had mixed support for reducing the speed limit along GMD. “Lowering the speed limit is an important consideration for a few reasons,” McGue said. “One of which is that the survivability of a pedestrian when they’re involved in a crash at 35 mph is much better than it is at 45 mph.”

McGue said there aren’t many fatal crashes along GMD, but there are many rear-end crashes. Five people have been killed on GMD since 2018: two people in a car, a pedestrian, a cyclist and a truck driver tending to his rig alongside the road.

However, pedestrian hybrid beacons are a different crosswalk style that can use red lights.

Commissioner Maureen Merrigan said she considers it a priority for the town to secure funding to build a roundabout at GMD and Broadway Street to help improve pedestrian safety. She also agreed with citizens on the need to improve the town’s bike lanes.

“Our bike lanes are totally not adequate,” Merrigan said.

In the future, commissioners would need to decide on different possibilities for GMD, which could include a cycle track, a trail, a sidewalk, lighting and enhanced lighting.

“If you make it so wide for bicyclists, people might drive in it as well,” McGue cautioned.

Monday’s Town Commission discussion with Kimley-Horn representatives did not include a conversation on when the state plans to replace Longboat Pass Bridge, which was built in 1957.

Earlier this year, the state started collecting feedback from the community about the bridge.

in all of Anna Maria Island because most of that is 35 mph,” Schneier said. “And (the golf carts) can’t go 35 (mph), but they’re allowed to go on a 35 mph road, so they have people going nuts up there.”

Schneier said Anna Maria leaders are trying to figure out ways to limit golf carts to side roads. However, Schneier acknowledged Longboat Key doesn’t have as many side roads to use as alternate routes.

Vice Mayor Mike Haycock, who serves as the town’s representative on the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization, explained his vision for GMD. “I’m making the assumption that if it’s 45 mph, we’re going to have red traffic lights all the way up and down the island,” Haycock said. “If we have places where it’s 35 mph, and we get this design right with the yellow flashing, then potentially we could have slow-down areas where we have pedestrians.”

In October, FDOT representatives explained that rectangular rapid flashing beacons can’t use red lights because they are a proprietary product to serve as an advanced warning to drivers to yield to pedestrians.

Attack on doctors’ oath Vaccinating children is emblematic of the war on the Hippocratic oath: government vs. doctors.

e knew they would come — the rebukes, the citations disparaging the doctors, the “shame on you” for printing such low-level misinformation and trash.

We’re printing this week some of the letters we received from readers in response to last week’s report on the Florida Summit on COVID-19, which we headlined on this page: “Do not vax your children.”

We knew that headline would trigger strong recoil. But we did it on purpose. It was, in fact, the most significant news and message coming from the speakers at the Florida Summit on COVID-19.

And we did it with the hope that readers would take note and do what we encouraged them to do — to do more research, to give consideration to the fact there are other voices, points of view, and credible evidence and research than that of the establishment in Washington at the CDC, NIH, FDA and WHO. Too many Americans have succumbed to the idea that whatever the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, it must be true and infallible. They forget the incredible ingenuity, inventiveness and discoveries that have always bubbled up from great minds outside of government. Galileo was not a government-paid astronomer.

Louis Pasteur was not a government chemist. Thomas Edison was not a government inventor.

But as the adjoining letters attest, they see and hear the mainstream media narrative that no one is credible except the establishment elites.

We’ve said it before: We are in a civil war with many raging fronts — the progressive, Marxist takeover of America; the cancel culture against free speech and religion; critical race theory in schools; and the war on COVID-19.

The war on COVID-19 is much more than fighting the killer virus. It’s a war in which the huge, taxpayer-financed, unaccountable public health bureaucracies — CDC, NIH, FDA, WHO — and Big Pharma companies have unleashed their forces in a way that defines the war like this: The ruling, public-health elites and Big Pharma are snuffing out the Hippocratic oath, the sacred covenant that has guided doctors for 2,500 years: First, do no harm. Prescribe only beneficial treatments to the best of the doctor’s abilities and judgment.

In other words, let doctors be doctors, not automatons.

How to treat COVID-19 is at the crux of this clash.

The doctors we quoted last week are among thousands of doctors and other health care providers all over the world who have been saving lives, preventing hospitalizations and curing COVID-19 patients with early treatment protocols.

But the public health agencies, Big Pharma, hospital corporations and national media outlets refuse to accept and acknowledge the effectiveness of these treatments, the legitimate data that supports their effectiveness and the doctors pioneering these treatments. Earlier this week, Dr. Paul Marik, the most published critical care doctor in medicine, developer of early treatment protocols for COVID-19 and disparaged in one of our letters, sued his hospital for preventing him from prescribing life-saving drugs

READERS RESPOND TO NO VAX FOR KIDS Your vaccine polemic was appalling Your Nov. 11 editorial, entitled “Do not vax your children,” relied on material presented during the Florida Summit on COVID-19 in Ocala.

You found the event to be persuasive and wrote that “you could not have left … without being convinced that if you had children or grandchildren, you will not let them be vaccinated for COVID-19.”

A possible reason you were so impressed is that the so-called summit was not an inclusive event of world experts but instead was presented by a narrow slice of vaccine deniers, both on stage and in the audience.

As the Gainesville Sun noted the next day, “Several of the doctors who spoke have drawn criticism for pushing misinformation.” No other points of view were included.

This summit was really a fringe pep rally and not a serious search for truth. The basic assertion, made without any credible data, was that the vaccine is dangerous for children and that COVID-19 is not.

This is the opposite of the truth.

As a physician and grandparent of three granddaughters in the 5-11 age group, I was appalled at the way you presented this meeting and at the important facts you omitted from your polemic.

For folks deliberating what to do for their own kids, I offer some of the reasons why our nation’s experts have been urging childhood immunization: n COVID-19 is not innocuous for kids. Often the disease is mild, but it is important to know that thousands have become seriously ill, and hundreds of children have died from COVID-19. This is far fewer than other groups, thank God, but it is a continuing tragedy nonetheless. n Thousands of children and their families are dealing with longlasting symptoms of “long-haul COVID-19,” often after mild initial illness. n Thousands of children have had their education disrupted due to recurrent school outbreaks. n Many children have become seriously ill with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and continue to require prolonged hospitalization and care. n Children continue to spread the virus, even when they themselves do not get seriously ill, often passing it to those at much greater risk, including grandparents and other loved ones.

Contrary to your assertions, research has shown that the vaccine in kids is safe, with no serious long-term problems. The myocarditis referred to is vastly more serious and problematic in children who get COVID-19 itself.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association reported there were 107,000 proven cases of COVID-19 in children for the week of Oct. 29 to Nov. 4, after 101,000 the previous week. This infection is still circulating and mutating.

Vaccinating ourselves and our children is the one way we can most effectively protect those we love. My three granddaughters all got vaccinated this week, and I am so happy they could be. Let’s protect all of our kids.

In fact, this summit was a continuing education event for physicians, nurses and other health care workers. The founder of messenger RNA technology in the development of vaccines, Dr. Robert Malone, presented the science of a DNA and RNA technology in a manner that rarely has been seen these past two years.

Similarly, we had presentations on immunology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, which were all highly technical and free from a pharmaceutical bias, which is a basic requirement for all continuing medical education.

It is indeed regrettable that so many in the medical profession have chosen to follow directives from the Center for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration or their hospital employers rather than use their God-given intellect to further their knowledge of this disease and help their patients make informed decisions.

Wearing a mask while strolling down the vacant hallway of a hospital displays blind obedience rather than intelligence. Similarly, the imposition of vaccine mandates as a condition of employment is a fundamental denial of the basic human right to make one’s own personal health care decisions.

And vaccinating our children without understanding the nature of these new vaccines and having access to the complete safety profile of each is a violation of the basic Hippocratic tenet, “First, do no harm.”

‘No vax for kids’: Full of distortions Last week, I received a text and picture from my 6-year-old granddaughter proudly holding up her COVID-19 vaccination card.

Although I understand an opinion piece often tends to distort facts, I was deeply disturbed and angry by the misrepresentation of information, the use of highly discredited sources and the dangerous disregard for scientific evidence.

Your opinion piece holds up Drs. Paul Alexander and Peter McCullough as COVID-19 experts when in reality both have been rebuked by their peers, their professional associations and their employers. In fact, Alexander was kicked out of his role as the White House because of statements like these: “So the bottom line is if it is more infectiousness (sic) now, the issue is, who cares? If it is causing more cases in young, my word is, who cares?” (Forbes Magazine) Equally irresponsible are your list of “resources,” including the Front Line COVID Critical Care Alliance. Did you actually check their resumes or licenses?

Founder Paul Marik was reprimanded by the Virginia Board of Medicine after he was caught prescribing controlled substances to people who weren’t his patients.

He currently has a University Limited medical license. The other members of this group are equally suspect and clearly not front-line COVID-19 experts.

And just who recommended the vaccine for my granddaughter?

Choice of ‘experts’ is concerning I am distressed that you again chose to use your bully pulpit to misinform your readers. Scaremongering costs lives, and your choice of the “experts” is again concerning.

Both experts essentially are recommending allowing children to become infected with COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity.

Both of them choose to view COVID-19 deaths as limited to the elderly and those with comorbidity. They conveniently ignore the fact that a significant number of otherwise healthy younger people die or become seriously ill from the disease.

In addition, the myocarditis study quoted by Dr. Peter McCullough has been debunked as flawed.

We willingly vaccinate our children against a dozen childhood diseases to protect the community. Vaccination against COVID-19 helps protect the vulnerable who come into contact with children and removes the reservoir of the virus that could cause infections in the future.

You have a responsibility to present a reasoned view to your readers.

Dr. Peter McCullough responds: I repeat what I said at the Florida Summit on COVID — preclinical, clinical and peer-reviewed studies have shown the vaccines cause myocarditis in adolescents 12-15. That is fact. And I repeat: Dr. Tracy Hoeg’s study found that the risk of an adolescent age 12-17 of being hospitalized with vaccineinduced myocarditis far exceeds the risk of hospitalization with COVID-19 illness while wisely declining the vaccine.”

Hoeg, furthermore, told Politifact in September there is “a specific concern about post-vaccination myocarditis in boys that needs to be studied further.”

Finally, because all the vaccines are investigational, good doctors cannot promote vaccination since that action violates the Nuremberg Code of medical ethics.

AN ALARMING MORNING 7:18 a.m., 6400 block of Gulfside Road Alarm: A residential intruder alarm attracted the attention of police, who went to the home to investigate, finding a door leading to the property’s primary bedroom open. The pair of officers looked around and found nothing suspicious. A check of the door revealed it would not latch properly. With no sign of a forced entry, the officers concluded the door could have blown open in the wind.

A property key holder confirmed the officers’ observations that nothing seemed suspicious inside.

TOWED AND TICKETED 9:40 a.m., 6900 block of Bayside Road Abandoned vehicle: What started as a report of an improperly parked vehicle on town property ended with the car being towed and a parking citation issued. Police received a call about the vehicle parked partially in the roadway and learned from several citizens that it had arrived around 2:30 a.m. carrying several, apparently intoxicated, occupants.

No wants or warrants were associated with the Toyota, which was registered to a Bradenton man, but it was obstructing traffic. A wrecker was called, and the vehicle was towed away, with information about the officer’s actions left on the car’s passenger seat.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME 12:36 p.m., 3400 block of Bayou Sound Suspicious incident: A call to police regarding the high-pitched sound of some kind of motor at a residence prompted an officer to investigate.

The officer discovered the sound was that of a pool pump. The officer told a neighbor that for reasons of liability he was not empowered to shut off the equipment for the home’s residents, who were out of town. The neighbor said he did not have a means to contact the residents but would contact the neighborhood association to determine what can be done.

SATURDAY, NOV. 6

WE’RE GOOD 7:07 p.m., 500 block of St. Judes Drive Rescue assist: Police responded along with fire-rescue personnel to a report of a fall at a business. The responding officer was advised police assistance was not required, and he returned to patrol duty.

SUNDAY, NOV. 7

NOT SHOT 3:41 p.m., 4200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Suspicious incident: A resident who thought a glass door had been struck with a bullet called police. Officers determined no shot had been fired, but they discovered a glass tabletop on the residence’s thirdfloor beachfront balcony had blown over in the wind, hitting the door.

Damage was estimated at $4,000.

NAVIGATION SITUATION 10:17 a.m., 500 block of Ketch Lane Boating call: The police department received a copy of a complaint filed with the town’s code enforcement office regarding a large vessel moored to a residential dock. The complaint focused on the size of the vessel and the remaining space in the canal for boats to safely pass.

The town’s marine patrol officer took the police department’s 32foot patrol boat to the canal, noted the location and size of the vessel in the complaint and was able to safely make passage in and out of the canal. The officer reconnected with the person who made the initial complaint and relayed his findings, noting the matter was not a police concern but rather one more suited for the homeowners’ association.

The officer said the resident was welcome to contact police or code enforcement for any further issues.

NO TROUBLE 10:57 a.m., 600 block of Halyard Lane Alarm: Police came to a home in response to an activated intruder alarm. Officers learned the alarm had been inadvertently triggered by a nearby construction crew. Nothing suspicious was found.

HELLO, DARKNESS, MY OLD FRIEND 10:17 p.m., 500 block of Putter Lane Suspicious incident: An unknown caller to police reported seeing flashlights moving around at a nearby residence. When an officer arrived, he learned from the property owner there had been some kind of power failure at the home and that an electrician had been called on an emergency basis. The homeowner was advised of the town ordinances regarding contractors working past 5 p.m., and the work ceased.

TREE TROUBLE 9:13 a.m., 5200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Citizen dispute: An officer was sent to the scene of a dispute between two neighbors regarding tree cutting and property lines. The officers learned that both parties had no documentation of tree ownership or land boundaries. The officer was told the ongoing issue would be brought to the attention of the homeowner association leadership because no criminal offense had been committed.

BIRD RESCUE 11:36 a.m., Longboat Key Club Moorings Animal complaint: The town’s marine patrol officer, while in the area of the Longboat Key Club’s marina, spotted a cormorant acting unusually. It appeared injured, lethargic and unable to fly. The officer was able to capture the bird and brought it to Save our Seabirds. Staff there retrieved the bird from the police officer and said the its condition was consistent with a reaction to red tide conditions.

UNCOVERING THE PROBLEM 7:38 p.m., 600 block of Norton Street Citizen assist: An officer learned from emergency dispatchers that a resident called authorities to report an interruption in water service. An employee of the town’s Public Works Department told the officer there had been a nearby issue with underground utilities, which had required a localized water-service shutdown,

Clients were advised to make arrangements for a safer location in advance, before the truck arrives.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR 12:48 p.m., 1400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive Traffic hazard: A caller reported to police a tractor-trailer rig parked in the safety zone in the middle of Gulf of Mexico Drive while delivering a vehicle, a violation of state law. The truck and its driver were cleared of any wants and warrants through a national crime-information database. The driver was cited for the infraction and explained his options for unloading and delivering the vehicle.

Town leaders consider next steps for rising seas Environmental consulting firm plans to complete Longboat Key’s sea level rise study by June 2022.

Disturbance flooding: More than 1 foot of water on the road where it is dangerous to drive.

n engineer working with Longboat Key on a four-phase study of sea level rise and what to do about it told commissioners on Monday the town is ahead of other coastal communities in preparing for the future of phenomenon.

“You’re asking the right questions,” said engineer Samantha Danchuk, of APTIM Environmental and Infrastructure LLC, an environmental and engineering consulting firm.

APTIM and the town are in the second phase of the study that will one day implement remedies for the expected environmental changes.

The second phase is entitled “Define Impacts” after the initial assessments phase. “(There are) already ongoing projects that are going to upgrade your system, so you’re already actively making the investment,” Danchuk said. “You’ve already submitted grant applications for the state money and are ready for the federal infrastructure money that’s coming in, and you’re asking the right questions.”

In August 2019, the town received $45,443 from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for its sea level rise plan.

“The next opening of the grant cycle will be Sept. 1, and it’s an opportunity to request funding, but also the state is in the middle of developing its own resiliency plan with priority projects across the state,” Danchuk said. “You want your vulnerabilities recognized, and you want to make sure they know what projects are moving in place so as they start to dedicate funding, you’re

right there at the top.”

Among the initial impacts discovered in phase one, APTIM found the town’s Public Works Complex, Recreation Center and Fire Station 92 are subject to nuisance flooding whereas the Mid-Key Water plant is subject to more serious disturbance flooding.

APTIM’s report found the police station, Town Hall and South Key Water Plant have unlikely shortterm risks from flooding.

The report found that the Mobil gas station, the town’s only filling station, is prone to disturbance flooding. However, other commercial businesses, such as the Bank of America, Suntrust Bank complex, Cannons Marina, Harborside Marina, are subject to nuisance flooding.

APTIM found that the post office, the Publix, Mediterranean Plaza, First Bank and CVS Pharmacy have unlikely short-term risk.

Phase three is called “Adaptation Strategies.” It is meant to determine engineering, protective measures, policy initiatives and approaches to land use, as well as how to pay for these components.

Phase four, “Implementation Plan,” will execute phase three’s strategies.

June of next year that we have a plan ready for your review and get it ready before your budget cycle,” APTIM engineer Douglas Mann told town commissioners.

Danchuk recommended the town “get in line” with the Sarasota/ Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization for its resilient corridor study to make road improvements to the north end of the island along Gulf of Mexico Drive in areas prone to flooding.

“The Florida Department of Transportation is actively looking across the state at evacuation routes that are vulnerable to hightide flooding, so they’ll start to look at what they need to do — either to elevate those streets to add drainage or to add pumps,” Danchuk said.

The town has committed funding this fiscal year to conduct an assessment of flooding and drainage issues

in the Buttonwood Harbour neighborhood and the Sleepy Lagoon neighborhood.

Commissioner BJ Bishop expressed her concerns about the sea level rise issues that Longboat Key faces.

“I’m glad there are some public members here, but quite honestly, this is going to need to be a dog and pony show, and I think the town is going have to continue to bring the rest of the residents in because they need to understand this information,” she said.

“And it’s not just magically we’re going to put in another pump in their neighborhood, and they’re saved forever, so I think we have some more work to do.”

APTIM’s report also acknowledged other areas of the island that are prone to flooding, such as Longbeach Village and Gulf of Mexico Drive near Zota Beach Resort.

“It was a great report,” Mayor Ken Schneier said. “It’s a scary report.”

Mann said once capital improvement projects are planned, some town ordinances will have to be adjusted to accommodate.

“Town staff, town attorney (and) the Town Commission need to work over the next couple of months to tweak the ordinances so that they reflect sea level today and they reflect sea level in 10 years,” Mann said.

Citing her experience as an assistant director of Broward County’s Resilience Department from 20142021, Danchuk said Longboat Key already has a strong Town Code to help address sea level rise issues.

She recommended making changes to establish minimum and maximum heights for seawall elevations along with changes to drainage designs, wetland proximity and other factors involved in negating flooding effects.

Teeing off the season

N

o ifs, ands or putts about it: Golf is back on Longboat Key for the winter. The Key Niners celebrated their first round of the season Nov. 9 and gathered for lunch afterwards.

About four dozen women gathered under the trees at the Links Golf Course at the Longboat Key Club for lunch after coming in from their first round. The women’s nine-hole golf association also welcomed five new members this winter, and the golfers spent time mingling and catching up before finding their seats for lunch and to find out who won the day.

Club President Noreen Ackerman thanked her members for being there. This will be her last season as president, and Amy Price will take over next year. Some golf goodies were raffled out, including golf balls, shoes and a golf bag, before the leading foursome was announced. Lynn McBrier, Price, Jackie Tilton and Zoey Zakovec topped the leaderboard.

Pamela was born on August 15, 1950 in Newburgh NY. She lived most of her adult life in Cincinnati OH and Longboat Key FL. She met her husband Mark Douglas Ketchum while attending Cornell University, and they married in 1973. Pam and Mark were both husband and wife and best friends for over 48 years. Pam obtained her degree from Cornell, majoring in Early Childhood Development. This subject remained her passion; from her early involvement in the Head Start program, to years of teaching elementary school and art, to raising her two children, and being fully in the lives of her five grandchildren.

Pam loved the beach, her flower gardens, community involvement and travel. She was proud to have stamps from over 30 countries in her passport, and enjoyed putting together photo albums to chronical each new location. Her favorite repeat destination was Italy, true to her Italian heritage; and she enjoyed being the “Italian tour guide” for family and friends. Pam and Mark shared a love for Cornell University that resulted in

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in many places, but the prettiest sight to see was the St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 13.

The morning started with a large crowd that ebbed and flowed throughout the day as attendees filed in to check out handmade ornaments, decorations, gifts and baked goods, as well as many secondhand items.

Barb Sikora, who was keeping an eye on the wreath section, said she had to replace purchased wreaths quickly to keep the wall populated with greenery.

Parishioners and others made cheerful conversation as they got into the mood for Christmas cheer. Decorations were a

C

ompared to the rest of Florida, Longboat Key has a relatively high percentage of veterans at 14.7% of the population, nearly 6 percentage points higher than the state average.

So it only makes sense that several events on and around the Key were organized to celebrate those who have served in all of America’s military branches.

From Plymouth Harbor to Longboat Island Chapel, the voices of veterans and the thank-you’s of the community were heard loud and clear.

“It’s nice to see and recognize other people like myself that I’ve known before and after I came here,” Air Force veteran Allen Jennings said.

the refrain among the 42nd was, “I can’t believe it.”

For years, Palmeri didn’t discuss much of his time at war. However, as he got older, he realized he wanted his children to have what he never did: a history of the family. He started writing notes, then more notes.

Then it piled up, and he really began writing the book.

“Once I got into writing, I was enjoying what I was doing, and I felt it was important,” Palmeri said. “I forgot so much that as I read back through my notes, more stuff came on, more things came up.”

FIRSTHAND ACCOUNTS

Although the number of veterans who can deliver firsthand accounts of World War II is diminishing, Longboat Key resident and World War II veteran Chuck Palmeri made sure his story will stick around. The 95-year-old published a book, “Boy Solder: Recollections of World War II,” in 2019. On Veterans Day, he gave a presentation with his editor, Liz Coursen.

Coursen began the presentation with the history of Dachau, Germany, a village northwest of Munich. It was known for its school of art before Heinrich Himmler became police chief in Munich and began imprisoning his and Adolf Hitler’s political enemies in a Waffen SS compound in Dachau. It quickly overfilled and became the concentration camp.

“As the war was winding down, the Allied armies were all racing towards Munich because it was feared that if the remnants of the German army was able to get through Munich, they would break into the hills where they would live to fight another day,” Coursen said. “Elements of the 45th, which was north; the 42nd, which was to the middle; and elements of the Third Army were all converging towards Munich, and they are all headed right towards Dachau.”

The 45th engaged the Waffen SS soldiers while the 42nd went to the gates of Dachau. They found 32,000 prisoners and scores of people who had already died.

me and said: ‘I want you to watch things going on around here because I’m leaving. I’m going to see something. … There’s something like a concentration camp,’” Palmeri said.

“He came back later that day, and … I thought he was exaggerating. … I went three days later, and as we approached in the open air Jeep, you can smell a terrible, terrible odor.

You can’t describe it. Dead men.”

Palmeri walked through the camp with his fellow soldiers tasked with liberating those who were still alive.

Even after they saw it, Palmeri said

Veterans Day ended on Longboat Key with a concert at Longboat Island Chapel. Vocal duo Siren Song performed a slate of operatic and patriotic songs to an audience of about 70 people. Church members attended with their families, but there were several veterans in the audience as well. Chapel member Bill Evanko came dressed in his Navy whites that he wore from 1971 to 1977.

Robyn Rocklein and Johanna Davis, backed on the piano by Donna Smith, wowed the crowd with a bevy of opera songs, including “Le Nozze di Figaro,” which was featured in “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Rocklein noted how opera has often been used as a symbol of freedom in movies and how one character in the 1994 film said he had no idea what they were singing about in Italian but that he felt free.

Of course, the evening wouldn’t have been complete without a tribute to the armed forces, so the iconic medley of U.S. military songs paired with Siren Song’s rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Chuck Palmeri

More than 40 of Plymouth Harbor’s veteran residents were honored in a pinning ceremony on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Veterans, their families and guests gathered at Plymouth Harbor for the ceremony, which was in partnership with Tidewell Hospice. Over the years, Tidewell has pinned more than 7,000 clients in ceremonies like these. Each branch of the military was represented, with 17 Army veterans, 11 Air Force veterans, nine Navy veterans, four Marine Corps veterans and two Coast Guard veterans, and each attendee received the Hospice Veterans Partnership Pin. “There’s a lot of representation sitting in this room, and it is an honor and privilege to be here with you today,” Tidewell volunteer and Air Force veteran Terry Purcell said.

Plymouth Harbor residents have served in every conflict from World War II to the Korean War to Operation Desert Storm.

Sallie Van Arsdale was in the September 1944 class of Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.

She never saw conflict during World War II but held the title of ensign, was in WAVES for a little under two years and received a pin Nov. 11.

“I think it’s always nice to be rewarded, congratulated, thanked for the time you spent,” Van Arsdale said.

Four volunteers went into the audience to pin veterans who could not walk to the stage, and each veteran was thanked and saluted after the pin was secured to their lapel.

Temple Beth Israel welcomes members back

A

feast and friends were on the docket for Temple Beth Israel as dozens of members gathered for Shabbat services and supper on Nov. 12.

The event was celebratory, as many attendees got to see friends they hadn’t seen since before the pandemic. Before dinner, Rabbi Stephen Sniderman recognized the work and effort that went into getting the congregation back together, as well as the serious losses of the community over the past year.

The temple also recognized a dozen new members to the congregation who were in attendance at dinner, though more have joined since the last big gathering before the pandemic.

Most newcomers were recently minted full-timers and had already been coming to the temple for years. One new member, Alan Freedman, is the son of two founding members of Temple Beth Israel.

Democratic Club meets for first luncheon

Republican Club meets with town leadership

Members hear from expert on dialogue and how she’s worked around the world.

The Republican Club of Longboat Key met for its second time of the 2021 season on Nov. 9, hearing from town leaders.

Before dinner, club president and Air Force veteran Scott Gray recognized Veterans Day and asked fellow veterans to stand and be recognized.

He also provided a quick update on the Miracle on the Key project, which is bridging the gap between the Republican Club and the Democratic Club. Members have met to discuss their differences and found that they’re not all that different.

Gray is among those linking the two.

“It’s a small step, but we hope it sends a message to our elected officials that it’s time to put our differences aside,” Gray said.

After dinner, Town Manager Tom Harmer was the first speaker of the evening. He briefly discussed his background in the Marine Corps and as a 9/11 dispatcher, firefighter, fire chief, city manager and county administrator before he came over the John Ringling Bridge and became Longboat Key’s town manager.

He gave an update on big-picture goings-on in the town, including a rundown of the 2020 census. The town’s year-round population of about 7,500 hasn’t changed much in the past 10 years, thanks to the island being mostly built out. The citizen survey from 2020 also revealed high satisfaction from residents, 99% of whom said that the quality of life on Longboat Key is “good or excellent.”

“We started this three years ago, and we asked the residents how they feel about the town,” Harmer said. “And the numbers really scare me because they’re so high, and it’s hard to live up to that. When I was first hired, we set a goal of meeting

The Longboat Key Democratic Club met for the first time since before the pandemic on Nov. 2, gathering at Sarasota Yacht Club for lunch and to hear a talk from Racelle Weiman, an international scholar in Conflict and Genocide Studies.

After lunch, Weiman, who is the executive director of the Dialogue Institute at Temple University, gave an overview of her work in genocide prevention.

The first point was that it’s important to know when dialogue is impossible. One experience Weiman had was with a perpetrator of the Rwandan genocide.

“When it’s gone beyond the extremes of humanity, there’s places where dialogue doesn’t exist,” Weiman said. “There is no dialogue.

There’s only putting people on trial for justice.”

The next type of dialogue she discussed was another absence of it.

Once, Weiman was scheduled to talk with Muslim and Christian scholars in Bangladesh for interfaith work being done there. Bangladesh is historically antisemitic, and Weiman is Jewish. Her visa never came, but the one for her Christian colleague did.

“Sometimes not dialoguing would have been better,” Weiman said. “It’s interesting because he did get on the plane without me. … And eight years later, the Muslim scholar called me, and he said that was the biggest mis-

take that ever happened. He said: ‘I was hoping he wouldn’t do it so that would force our government to change. Change did not happen.’”

Dialogue by trust and tit-fortat dialogue were the next two that Weiman discussed; the first relying on trust between parties and the second being the idea that if something worked here, perhaps it will work in this new situation. The final point of discussion was talk-down, which is when two groups are made to sit down and start at the beginning to talk things through.

“The greatest part of coming to dialogue is the ability to admit errors,” Weiman said.

Before ending the discussion, Weiman emphasized the courage to confront fears and asked participants to write down what scares them most about what’s happening in the country and world today and then where they could find the courage to confront it.

“Where are we going to find those resources of courage to be able to address your fear?” she said.

Weiman is also the facilitator for the Miracle on the Key project, which is bringing members of the Democratic Club and Republican Club together to discuss common ground, engage in dialogue and work through differences.

The clubs hope the project will provide a blueprint and wake-up call for elected officials to engage in similar across-the-aisle discussions.

with 100 residents my first 100 days, but the thing that came out of that was they all said: ‘OK, so you’re the new town manager. Don’t ever mess up our town.’ That’s kind of the mission that I was given four years ago.

So we’re really trying to do that as we go forward.”

Commission priorities include finalizing phase two improvements at the Town Center Green and working on programming for the center.

For citizens concerned about the roundabout project on Gulfstream in Sarasota, he provided some context.

“Ultimately, this work is supposed to occur through this season,” Harmer said. “Some of us are concerned about January, February, March when traffic is the heaviest, but before next season, they’re supposed to have this in place with all the improvements done. So we’ll hopefully keep our fingers crossed.”

Harmer ended with ways citizens can get involved, including through the Citizens Academy in January, the annual citizens survey, volunteering, attending town meetings or working to get onto an advisory board. He was followed by the leaders of the three biggest departments on Longboat Key: Fire Chief Paul Dezzi, interim Police Chief George Turner and Public Works Director Isaac Brownman.

ongboat Island Chapel is warming up for season, and members started with a welcome back coffee hour on Nov. 9.

They gathered in the Friendship Garden, which will soon be full of Christmas trees for the chapel’s Christmas in the Garden event, for coffee, cinnamon bread and camaraderie. Pastor Brock Patterson started the morning with a prayer to welcome part-time residents back before attendees picked a mug to keep from the Lord’s Warehouse for that morning’s coffee. Volunteers made the rounds in the gazebo, making sure everyone’s plates were full of cheese, deviled eggs and cinnamon apple bread.

Volunteers from the Lord’s Warehouse thought up a game for their attendees, too. They had nine items that had been donated to the warehouse, and the task was to accurately name what each thing was. The cryptic contributions included a book holder, an angel food cake cutter, a watermelon slicer and a watermelon dicer. Virginia Luke won with six correct guesses and took home a plant for her guessing greatness.

ith their long legs; wide, rounded tails; iridescent feathers; and long, slim necks, wild turkeys are impressive, if slightly peculiar, looking birds.

They’re sizable, too: Wild turkeys can weigh up to 20 pounds, with wingspans up to 5 feet.

To conserve energy and due to their foraging style, turkeys spend most of their time on the ground.

Traveling in fast-moving flocks, they can be heard clucking and purring, communicating among themselves as they peck for acorns, nuts, berries and insects.

When they must, wild turkeys are incredibly fast on their feet, with running speeds of up to 25 mph. And although they’re not long-distance fliers, they are capable of speeds of up to 55 mph in the air. For safety from ground predators, wild turkeys roost in trees at night.

Like many birds whose chicks are born precocial (feathered and

able to feed themselves) but not yet able to fly, wild turkeys nest on the ground. After a short courtship, the toms wander off, leaving the hens to build a nest, lay eggs and then raise the newly hatched chicks (known as poults) on their own.

Nests are merely scratched depressions in dead leaves at the base of trees, under brush piles or in thick shrubbery, and they are extremely vulnerable to predation. Hens dutifully incubate their eggs for about 28 days, leaving the nest rarely to feed.

A few hours after the nine to 13 poults hatch, the hen leads them away, teaches them to find food and keeps them warm under her wings and tail, until they can fly and fend for themselves. And thanks to conservation efforts and protected lands, native turkeys still thrive in the wild.

Wild turkey populations plummeted in the early 20th century because of hunting and loss of habitat. They have since recovered, thanks to conservation efforts.
