Hotel project looms for Resort at Longboat Key Club CURRENT KEY CLUB

Longboat Key Club General Manager Jeff Mayers is waiting for resort owner Ocean Properties Ltd. to unveil plans for a new $100 million hotel at the resort, but Mayers says he isn’t worried.

“Work on it hasn’t started yet,” Mayers said.

Voters have already OK’d a request by Ocean Properties Ltd. to convert the use of 300 units, via a May 2015 referendum, which will allow the resort to build the new Longboat Key Club Hotel.

“They requested, and the voters approved, a conversion from residential density to tourism density,” said Director Alaina Ray of the Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Department.

It was not a density increase request, she emphasized.

Since then, island residents have shown reticence to approve new projects for fear they will generate more traffic woes.

On Nov. 8, Longboat Key voters nixed owner Ryan Snyder’s plan to raze a portion of Whitney Beach Plaza on Gulf of Mexico Drive to build up to 18 homes. That same day, voters quashed Oscar Parsons’ quest to regain simultaneous residential and business use of 4,200 square feet of penthouse office space at Harbour Square.

Those decisions followed on the heels of an Aug. 30 vote that put an end to Floridays Development Co.’s plans for the North End Hotel and Beach Club.

General Manager Jeff Mayers has guided the Resort at Longboat Key Club through a complicated summer.

Properties Ltd. will seek approval for its expansion plan.

Ocean Properties has yet to submit a site plan to the Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Department, Ray said.

Once it does submit a plan, it will be reviewed by Ray’s staff, then go to one public hearing before the Planning and Zoning Board and one public hearing before the Longboat Key Town Commission.

If the site plan is approved, building construction plans must be submitted to the Building Department for review.

Mayers said nothing in the plans has changed since the project was approved by voters in the town’s first mail-in referendum. A 259-unit hotel, expanded

meeting space and about 93 condominium units are still in the works, although designs have yet to be finalized.

Ocean Properties Vice President Mark Walsh did not return calls for comment from the Longboat Observer on when a site plan might be submitted.

While the new hotel is being designed, work on another major resort project continued through the summer. Mayers said renovations to resort golf courses, ongoing for the past three years, could be completed soon.

“The White Golf Course (part of the Harbourside Golf Course), the last nine of our 45 holes under renovation, is to be completed by the end of this year,” he said. “It was a very significant investment

in the millions of dollars.”

This summer at the resort was much more complicated than simply dealing with the usual tourism lull during the hottest months of the year, Mayers said.

The club entertained guests even while red tide, beach renourishment and hundreds of sand truck hauls came on property during the past few months.

Mayers, 54, in his fourth season heading operations at the 440acre Resort at Longboat Key Club, said the timing of the challenges worked in the club’s favor.

“Once you get in August and September, it is the slowest time of year,” he said. “That’s when red tide hit, so it really worked out.

Unfortunately it happened, but it had minimal impact.”

High marks ... and a question mark Commissioners praise town manager and attorney in their reviews, but they note concerns about the town’s long-term leadership.

own Manager David Bullock still needs to work on his delegation skills to better train successors for his eventual departure, Longboat Key commissioners say.

They also say Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale, 42, needs to develop sharper leadership instincts.

Those themes ran throughout the performance reviews Bullock and Mooney-Portale received Monday at the Longboat Key Town Commission workshop.

But despite his high marks, there’s an ongoing concern about Bullock.

Mayor Jack Duncan — who describes Bullock as a great hands-on manager — knows the town manager will leave someday, and the commission must prepare for that reality.

“If Dave left tomorrow, who on the staff could replace him?”

Duncan said. “We should be able to identify a successor if we were doing good succession planning.

Duncan is concerned because he believes Bullock doesn’t delegate well — so he ends up doing a tremendous amount of work.

“We need to give staff members and particularly his direct reports, as much responsibility as they can,” Duncan said. “It’s just good succession planning. Dave could get a hit by a bus any time. If you are really doing it well, you’d have a couple people behind every department head ready to move up. Dave has to delegate, too.”

Duncan expressed his concerns in his written review of Bullock, who recently celebrated his 66th birthday, saying Bullock takes too much on himself and needs to better develop management talent under his leadership.

“My concern is the same as last year,” wrote Duncan. “Giving more exposure to subordinates is critical. You must push the babies out of the nest.”

Bullock’s employment agreement calls for the commission to evaluate his job performance and set objectives annually.

Other commissioners expressed similar concerns at Monday’s workshop. “(He’s) perhaps a bit too much hands-on,” Commissioner Jack Daly said.

Vice Mayor Terry Gans said results are good under Bullock, but he questions what will happen once he retires.

“I don’t know how prepared the town is in the long run, particularly at assistant manager and public works,” Gans wrote.

Bullock, who earns $180,000 annually, turned down a $7,200 performance-related raise in November 2015 but accepted 15 extra vacation days. He now has seven weeks of paid vacation valued at $24,220.

Bullock gave a five-year commitment when hired in October 2011. He has said he is not yet ready to retire but is now taking it day by day.

He admits to having a tough time delegating work to staff members.

“That’s a personality flaw,” Bullock said. “An area to be improved. It’s my weakness, not theirs.”

Bullock indicated concerns over who might succeed him are overblown. He said many qualified applicants, on and off his staff, will apply once he retires.

“I’m pretty sure there would be a host of folks that could take over and do far more than I am capable of,” he said. “There will be a lot of folks here or other places who want to take this over.”

Budgeting prowess, decisionmaking skills, sound judgment and cognizance of complex issues facing Longboat Key earned Bullock plenty of praise.

Mooney-Portale’s review format was different than Bullock’s.

Commissioners had four choices for ratings in 11 categories: excellent, fully satisfactory, satisfactory and unsatisfactory. She was rated excellent or fully satisfactory in the vast majority of all categories by commissioners and earned perfect reviews from Commissioner Armando Linde and Irwin Pastor.

The positive reviews indicate Mooney-Portale has mended the rift between her and the commission, which caused her to resign in May 2014 after she faced criticism from commissioners over issues such as her handling of a nuisance hearing involving Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

She eventually withdrew her resignation after much discussion with the commission.

Commissioners Phill Younger and Ed Zunz reviewed MooneyPortale more critically than fellow commissioners.

Zunz said Mooney-Portale failed to properly advise the commission on its legal obligations while it was considering how best to pay for moving all overhead utilities underground. The result: The funding mechanism for the project has been roundly criticized as unfair and is still being developed, and the “55-foot rule,” a controversial standard the town has used to determine assessments for underground utilities based on how far a property is located from overhead utilities, has been criticized as an arbitrary measure and not a legal benchmark, according to Zunz.

Younger gave Mooney-Portale a half “unsatisfactory” and half “satisfactory” rating in three categories: personal characteristics, job knowledge and legal counsel responsibility.

Pastor, however, summed up the general tone in most of Mooney-Portale’s reviews with this comment: “Our town attorney on all occasions has proven to be accurate and technically correct on existing legal issues.”

“I’m pleased,” Mooney-Portale said. “I enjoy working for the commission. And there’s always room for improvement.”

Larry Grossman has filed to run again for the District 4 Longboat Key Town Commission seat in the March election.

Grossman, 68, filed Nov. 10 to take on incumbent District 4 Commissioner Jack Daly, 80, who has already announced he will run for a second term.

It will be their second headto-head race after Grossman lost a 2015 election to Daly by 1,295 to 505 votes. He also ran in 2013, when he unsuccessfully challenged Mayor Jim Brown, losing 1,395 to 1,094.

Grossman said the town needs new thinking, particularly on issues such as redevelopment of the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

“It seems that the voters on the different referenda are not happy with any kind of density increase,” he said. “I don’t know if that will extend to the Colony.

The main thing is, you have to have a plan. I don’t see any planning here. There’s scattered decision making.”

Grossman said Tuesday that his candidacy has not been certified by the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections, and it might not be by the noon Monday deadline for all candidates to present 10 signed petitions from voters residing in their districts.

certified, that makes two former mayors, one current commissioner, one former commissioner and a former commission candidate in the running.

“We need new faces and fresh blood,” Grossman said. “It’s a new race. It’s up to the voters.”

The seven members of the commission serve two-year terms.

Former Commissioner Gene Jaleski, 75, who last served on the commission in 2010, will oppose former Mayor Jim Brown, 70, in the race to succeed At-Large Commissioner Phill Younger.

Former Mayor George Spoll, 82, is so far unopposed for the District 2 seat held by Mayor Jack Duncan.

Both Duncan and Younger will reach term limits in March 2017.

Whitney Plaza owner seeks new referendum route It took Ryan Snyder just one day to ask for another vote — and a new plan.

It did not take long for the owner of Whitney Beach Plaza to ask for another referendum after Longboat Key voters rejected his request to convert the property’s zoning from commercial to mixed use.

Plaza owner Ryan Snyder, of Bradenton, wanted to raze a portion of Whitney Beach Plaza in the 6800 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and build up to 18 homes.

Of Longboat’s 6,267 registered voters, 5,063 cast ballots in the Whitney Plaza referendum with 3,055 voting against the project and 2,008 voting for it.

In a letter to Longboat Key Mayor Jack Duncan the day after the Nov. 8 vote, Snyder said his business, Whitney Plaza LLC, wants to redevelop Whitney Beach Plaza into an all-residential subdivision.

Duncan said he did not expect the request.

“I’m very surprised he has asked for another one as quickly as he has,” Duncan said.

posals in a row, including a hotel proposed by Floridays Development Co. and redevelopments for Whitney Plaza and Harbour Square on Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“Residents of Longboat Key are incredibly concerned about traffic,” Duncan said.

Snyder requested a new referendum be set at the earliest date possible to allow the town to consider a conversion to residential use with a maximum density not to exceed six units per acre.

“Something has to change,” he said. “I’ll keep doing it until something changes. The other option is to let the center go into disrepair.”

Snyder said he decided to take his property all residential after receiving postelection feedback from residents who said they don’t like it being mixed use.

“We’ve already got commercial,” he said. “It’s not working, and until somebody comes with an alternative idea, we’ll keep trying.”

Plaza storefronts include: Bayou Tavern, 21st Century Investors Advisors Corp., Beach Fitness, Longbeach Café, Organic Dog Food Treats, Design 2000 for Hair and Nails, Caswell Legal, Island Adventure Outfitters, Rip Current island wear and LBK Liquors.

Snyder said the maximum number of homes he would build is somewhere between 18 and 21, which would match the zoning

density in surrounding areas.

As another option, Snyder said he would like to retain some commercial property up to a maximum of 15,000 square feet.

Of the businesses open in the 45,000-square-foot plaza, some have leases up to 10 years, he said.

“Ultimately, if we can get something approved there, it’s my intent to leave it with some commercial if we can,” he said.

The town charter requires voter approval before adding density uses in excess of limits specified in the comprehensive plan.

Because the plaza’s commercial status does not allow for density, Snyder needs voter approval.

Snyder said he would cover all costs of another referendum and requested the vote date be set by the Town Commission rather than pursuing the option of obtaining 10% of voter signatures on a petition.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale would need to review any proposed referendum language before it goes to the commission for final approval.

The town has a general election scheduled for March 14, and the city of Sarasota may have a runoff election May 9, Town Clerk Trish Granger said.

The Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections reports the earliest date for a stand-alone referendum or all-mail ballot would be sometime next June.

Adams says ‘no’ to Colony proposal ... for now Majority unit owner Andy Adams has voted against an Orlando developer’s plan to redevelop the resort.

Approval of the proposed buyout offer for Colony Beach & Tennis Resort condo unit owners was always going to come down to majority owner Andy Adams.

Adams, a Tennessee developer, controls 75 units, and his vote alone could block the proposal, which requires 90% approval — 216 of 237 condo unit owners.

And, at least initially, he has voted against Orlando developer Chuck Whittall’s offer to buy out his condo units and all others on the former tennis resort.

Jay Yablon, president of Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association Board of Directors, has targeted achieving at least 91% approval from owners for a purchase and development deal with Whittall’s Unicorp Acquisitions LLC. Yablon said such a majority would give the association “safe harbor” from any possible legal challenges.

As of press time Tuesday, a total of 119 unit owners voted yes and 36 voted no so far, according to Yablon. The association requested unit owners vote by Nov. 10.

Owners can still rescind or even change their votes.

the next 24 hours, 30 of those ‘no’ votes will be withdrawn,” Yablon said. “Out of 36 ‘no’ votes, only six came from individual owners who do not control large blocs of units.”

Whittall confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Adams cast 30 of the “no” votes, and he continues to be in talks with Adams in hopes of changing his 30 “no” votes into “yes” votes. Adams also has 45 votes he has yet to cast out of his total of 75.

“Talks are going good,” Whittall said. “All I can say right now is Mr. Adams and I are having good discussions.”

Adams’ rejection could block Whittall’s plans. Florida law on termination of a condo association states: “If 10% or more of the total voting interests of the condominium have rejected the plan of termination by negative vote or by providing written objections, the plan may not proceed.”

Before the vote, Adams said he did not wish to discuss his position on the redevelopment proposal until after it is settled.

“I’d really rather not get into it right now,” Adams said. “I just don’t want to negotiate in a public forum.”

He did say he was ready for negotiations to conclude successfully.

“I just wish we could get to a point where everybody is moving forward and we could have a more detailed discussion,” Adams said by phone from his home in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Condo unit owner acceptance of the association’s proposed purchase, sale and development deal with Unicorp Acquisitions LLC would trigger a $1 billion

redevelopment of the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive. A series of bankruptcy filings led to the closure of the resort in 2010, following a dispute between longtime resort owner Murf Klauber and unit owners that began in 2004 over who was responsible for paying for a series of repairs.

The 86-page deal was mailed to owners Sept. 15. Notarized votes were to be returned by mail

by Nov. 10, but Yablon said votes coming in after the soft deadline will be accepted.

“There really is no deadline per se,” he said. “As long as we have not opted out of the development agreement and Unicorp has not opted out of the development agreement, we can take the time to vote.”

The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association Board of Directors wants at least 91% approval from owners for a development deal with Orlando-based Unicorp Acquisitions LLC. Why Trump won here Historical trends pointed toward a Hillary Clinton victory in Florida. Three factors beat her: third-party/independent voters; her own party’s turnout; and Trump’s message.

he Rust Belt states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan became the story of the Nov. 8 election. But we Floridians know that, had Hillary Clinton won Florida early on in the night, that would have forecast an entirely different outcome.

Florida was the bellwether.

As it has been.

Because of Florida’s incredibly diverse demographics — socially and ethnically, demographers say Florida is the closest state in the nation that reflects national demographics. And because of that, how Florida votes is a darn good bet on how the rest of the nation will vote.

Indeed, if you look at the voting maps above, they look much like the election maps of the United States — predominantly conservative geographically with a few pockets of high-density, urban, progressive strongholds.

In spite of that imbalance of predominantly red conservatism, the nation has been seen as being split almost 50-50, leaning a few percentage points either way.

As this election approached, the pollsters expected the popular vote to be leaning left. They saw Florida that way, too, but they also saw Florida to be, once again, too close to call.

At a glance, Florida appeared to live

up to expectations: Donald Trump: 49.02% Hillary Clinton: 47.81% But here’s the news: It was not as close as it looks.

When Barack Obama won Florida in 2012, he eked out a victory with 50% of the vote to Mitt Romney’s 49.1% — a 74,310-vote difference.

Trump’s margin of victory, while close in percentage, was 114,455 votes.

Here’s what made the difference: When Barack Obama won Florida in 2012, only 0.86% of the vote went to third-party candidates. In 2016, Trump won the same percentage of the vote as Romney, but 3.16% of this election’s vote went to third-party candidates, not to Clinton. These were Obama votes in 2012.

Here are more telling statistics: n Total registered Republicans: 4,550,311 n Total votes for Trump: 4,615,910 That’s 65,599 more votes than registered Republicans. n Total registered Democrats: 4,877,749 n Total votes for Clinton: 4,501,455 That’s 376,294 votes fewer than registered Democrats.

You draw the conclusion. It should be obvious.

Florida’s vote pretty much followed historical patterns.

Clinton dominated in the traditional Democratic urban counties: MiamiDade, Broward, Palm Beach; Orlando (Orange and Osceola counties) and Tampa (Hillsborough County), plus the liberal university centers in Gainesville (Alachua County) and Tallahassee (Leon and Gadsden counties).

With the exception of Hillsborough, she won all of those strongholds with 58% to 70% of the vote (Hillsborough was 52%).

But to illustrate how Clinton was unable to match Obama’s perfor-

But Trump’s margin of victory was the smallest in the past three presi-

dential elections.

Even during in Barack Obama’s two victories in Florida, in 2008 and 2012, the Republican candidates — John McCain and Mitt Romney — garnered wider victory margins than did Trump over Hillary Clinton.

McCain beat Obama on Longboat Key with a 544-vote margin, 62% to 38%. And Romney beat Obama with an 815-vote margin, 70% to 30%.

Turnout this year was more than twice the number it was in 2012 — 5,296 votes, or 84.5% turnout, versus 2,069 votes, or 33.1% turnout in 2012.

mance, of the nine counties she won, and won them handily, Clinton nonetheless won by margins that were less than Obama’s in 2012. What’s more, Trump was able to flip four counties that voted for Obama in 2012 (see “Counties Trump Flipped” above).

Conversely, while Clinton was unable to improve winning margins in Democratic shoo-in counties, Trump improved on Romney’s margins in 47 of the 58 counties that Trump won.

Consider the eight counties lining the west coast of Florida — Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier.

Trump increased his winning margins and Clinton increased her losing margins in six of the eight counties.

Only in Hillsborough and Collier did Trump have a smaller winning margin than Romney.

The most surprising shift was Pinellas (St. Petersburg, Clearwater).

Pinellas voters two decades ago and before were among Florida’s staunch conservatives. But in the four presidential elections since 2000, Pinellas voters chose Al Gore, Obama twice and nearly voted for John Kerry over George W. Bush in 2004. In Bush’s dominating victory in 2004, he beat Kerry by only 226 votes in Pinellas.

Given that history, and the fact Pinellas voters backed newly minted Democrat Charlie Crist in the 2014 gubernatorial election with 52% of the vote, Pinellas appeared to be and should have been a lock for Clinton.

So much for conventional wisdom.

And to give you one last piece of evidence that also debunks conventional wisdom, consider what is often referred to as the I-4 corridor — typically the Democratic counties of Hillsborough, Osceola and Orange; and the typically Republican counties of Polk, Seminole and Volusia. Pollsters and pundits often say whoever wins the I-4 corridor wins the state.

George W. Bush won the corridor twice. Barack Obama won it twice.

This year, the I-4 corridor voted decisively for Clinton, beating Trump by 133,187 votes. And yet, Clinton lost the state.

The moral of all this data: Florida is indeed a microcosm of the U.S. electorate. And like the U.S. electorate, even though Florida Democrats and Republicans typically vote party line, they also vote, or don’t vote at all, on past performance. What’s more, that growing swath of non-party affiliated voters — now 27.6% of Florida’s total — votes for the candidate whose message best resonates in their hearts and minds. That’s what happened Nov. 8. Win Florida, you win it all.

The Sarasota Police Department’s marine patrol provided the owner’s name, which was entered into the statewide derelict vessel database by the Longboat Key Police Department.

POOL PROBLEMS 12:03 p.m. — 6900 block of Longboat Drive South Suspicious Circumstance: A contractor installing a pool and deck reported a backyard fence was knocked down, a breaker powering pool pumps turned off and a discharge hose disconnected after he left the job site.

The result: Several weeks of work lost, and an inspection had to be rescheduled. As the officer was taking the report, the only nearby neighbor came out and waved.

The officer went next door and knocked on several doors but was unable to locate the neighbor.

New Save Our Seabirds mobile app takes flight

LOST AND FOUND 6:59 p.m. — 50 block of Twin Shores Boulevard Public Service: A man reported his wife was missing. She had gone out to eat but was unfamiliar with the area, and he said she frequently loses her way. The wife returned home safely as the officer was taking the report.

She told the officer she had gotten lost and ended up in Parrish before being helped by another motorist.

About two years ago, Sean Morris, of Mixed Viz: Educational Product Development, heard that Pilston wanted to create an app for SOS. The two collaborated, and on Oct. 20, the app went live.

All users have to do is download the free app, connect to Save Our Seabirds’ free Wi-Fi and choose English, Spanish or German.

“The central message is making a tool that would make it fun for them to learn and easy to remember what they can do in their dayto-day lives to help these particular species,” Morris said.

When users unlock the tour tool, it gives them a virtual look at a species’ habitat. For example, at the sandhill crane exhibit, the app gives them the option to tour the animal’s natural habitat — in this case, a golf course. Users can tilt their phones for a broader look around the habitat before they reach a video screen.

“The ultimate goal really is for the app to be a megaphone for what issues Save Our Seabirds deemed important,” Morris said.

Save Our Seabirds’ mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick and injured wild birds.

But another part of its mission is to educate the community about the birds and their habitats.

Save Our Seabirds Interactive, the organization’s new iPhone and Android app, takes the organization’s education mission one step further. When guests approach a bird cage, they can open the app and hold their phone’s camera up to a sign and their phone will unveil videos, habitat tours and more. Recordings will explain how people can keep birds out of harm’s way. For example, when you approach an owl’s cage, the video explains that throwing food out the car window can draw owls close to the road, putting them in danger of getting hit.

“We want to make the education experience here as interesting as possible,” said David Pilston, Save Our Seabirds’ CEO.

This was more than an idle thought during a traffic jam. On Nov. 3, Adkinson attended what he’s dubbed the “Veggie Market,” a weekly produce sale at the Lido Pavilion that he helped organize.

That was no easy task. When Adkinson asked if it was possible to get a market on Lido or St. Armands, people told him no.

They were thinking in a traditional sense — based on the cost of land on the islands, it’s not cost-effective for larger grocers to open stores.

Adkinson drew from his own experience to devise another option. He served in the Army, where various vendors — selling things like produce, baked goods and dairy — would come onto the base daily. He thought it must be possible to do something similar on Lido.

Working with the Lido Key Residents Association, he got Brown’s Grove Citrus and Produce to agree to bring fruits and vegetables out to the barrier islands every week.

After navigating some logistical challenges with the city, the Lido residents got approval to hold the market at the Lido Pavilion, located near the public beach at 400 Ben Franklin Drive.

ike most residents on Sarasota’s barrier islands, Mike Adkinson has a lot of time to kill while sitting in traffic.

Last season, Adkinson found himself stuck on the John Ringling Causeway and taking stock of what led him to this unpleasant situation. He realized he couldn’t

avoid going to the mainland altogether, but he started wondering if it was possible to cut down on the number of trips he took over the bridge.

“I really was going over to get things to make salad — cucumbers, lettuce,” he said. “I came back, and I had the conversation with a couple of people: Can’t there be some way we have a fresh market out here?”

farmers market on city property isn’t without precedent. City spokeswoman Jan Thornburg pointed out that Newtown set up its own farmers market earlier this year, and she said the city would attempt to work with other residents interested in setting up something similar.

Thornburg said she was impressed with the market.

“They really had a good turnout and a steady stream of customers,” Thornburg said.

For Adkinson, the market represents more than just an opportunity to avoid a few trips over the Ringling bridge. He wants to foster a sense of community on the barrier islands, uniting people on Lido, St. Armands and Bird keys to address common interests.

During the veggie market, he saw an egalitarian bonding experience among the customers.

People were getting to know their neighbors, talking to one another in a public space — a remarkable feat in this day and age, Adkinson thought. This, more than anything, is the value of an event like this to him.

“We just want to have an activity that’s healthy and good for the community, to come together once a week and shake hands and enjoy socializing like we did this morning,” Adkinson said following the first day of the market.

Already, residents were asking him about what’s next for the veggie market, but Adkinson is warding off the idea of expansion. Eventually, he might like to see a baker or dairy salesperson come in — but for now, he thinks it’s perfect as-is.

“We don’t want to grow it right now,” he said. “We want to enjoy it. We want to keep it like it is.”

Longboat Key Club Tennis Association honors Larry Straff

F

or the past 18 years, Larry Straff has been a dedicated member of the Longboat Key Tennis Association.

And on Nov. 14, he was recognized with the Robert T. Ruff Award at the association’s Fall Frolic at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Dining Room. The award is given to an individual who helps promote and help the association, President Larry Coleman said.

The nine-member board unanimously voted Straff as this year’s recipient. Straff accepted his award to a standing ovation from the 120 members present. Upon his acceptance, he joked with Bob Ruff, whom the award is named after, about having an award in his name.

Ruff laughed and said he had no say in the vote.

Straff, a past board member himself, was surprised by the honor.

The family that Trots together stays together The Brenner family held their annual Turkey Trot a little early this year.

The family gathered Nov. 6 for their run and celebration of Maggie Brenner’s 80th birthday. The family jogged on Gulf of Mexico Drive between the 2300 block and the 4600 block. They have been running Turkey Trots since 2009, usually in the Philadelphia area. But because of Maggie’s special birthday, they changed the time and location. Their trot is open only to family members and spouses.

“If you’re not a Brenner or married to a Brenner, you don’t make it,” Dave Brenner said jokingly.

Lucia Blinn captures history in poems to late husband The Longboat Key resident’s memos to her late husband range from the O.J. Simpson trials to the iPhone craze.

The poem calls our world a bizarre one, not a brave one. It talks of shootings and global warming, terrorism and the presidential election.

The way Lucia Blinn reads it, though, is soothing. It’s as if she’s reading a book to a child.

She says she writes for herself, but this poem is for her late husband, Marty.

It’s called “Memo to Marty 2016,” and it recaps political, cultural and personal events that Blinn’s late husband has missed since the previous “memo” she wrote him in 2013. He died in 1993, and Blinn wrote her first memo to him in 2004. That memo recalls 9/11, the O.J. Simpson trials, Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ death and Martha Stewart’s stock trading scandal.

These memos, along with two others, are in “Memo to Marty,” her fifth book of poetry, which was published in the spring. The book contains other poems that she’s written throughout the years, as well.

Blinn spent her career in advertising in New York and Chicago.

She knew she’d burn out one day.

Advertising is a young person’s game, after all, she said. Instead, she decided she would write.

“You know, writing is a huge satisfaction for me,” she said. “I mean, I made my living writing advertising, and now I’m writing for myself, which is just a terrific blessing. But sharing my work is a huge part of it as well.”

Blinn didn’t plan to be a poet.

Yes, she had written poems for other people for special occasions, but it wasn’t until she attended a poetry workshop after retirement that the “aha” moment hit her. She calls writing poetry the career after the career.

“Retiring to nothing is certainly not an option, and the fact that I had this craft to turn to has made a huge difference in my life,” she said.

Blinn’s ideas come from the world around her.

“It was such juicy material that I thought this is a way to contain it,” she said, “to put it in a memo to somebody who isn’t aware of all these interesting things that have happened. So it was a lucky literary conceit.”

Each memo crafts the briefest of history lessons for Marty Blinn. Cultural, political or personal, Lucia Blinn made sure to include important details since her husband’s death.

From the iPhone craze and the evolution of technology to tightened airport security and e-cigarettes, Blinn’s memos flow swiftly through the years.

“There’s a whole history since

2004,” she said. “Twelve years of what’s been going on this country, which is plenty.”

Blinn said her earliest memory of writing is from fourth grade when she won a poetry contest.

Today, she spends time with two writing partners, fellow Longboaters Pat Owen and Marelyn Oberman. The three say they find comfort in writing.

“It’s really nice to get lost in writing,” Owen said. “When

you’re focused and when you’re part of a creative process, you’re involved in it. You’re not focused on other things.”

The trio gathers at Oberman’s house. The chatter is rare. Writing is abundant. Distractions can’t permeate their minds. They compare it to having a workout or walking partner.

“The quiet and just being around another person or persons that are devoted to just the solitude of writing their thoughts, it’s sort of a luxury because you don’t have (a lot of) down time or quiet time,” Oberman said.

JAMES E. ‘JIM’ FELTON

Jim Felton, 89, of Sarasota, died Nov. 6.

He was born in Minneapolis.He was a World War II veteran who served in Europe, attaining the rank of sergeant. He attended Shattuck Military Academy and Gustavus Adolphus College.

In 1952, he and his wife, Shirley, moved to Longboat Key. Before retiring, he owned Felton Asphalt Maintenance. Jim and Shirley owned the Hunters Bay Resort on Woman Lake in Longville, Minn., and the Holiday Beach Resort on Longboat.

He was an avid golfer and patron of the Masters Tournament for more than 50 years.

He is survived by Shirley; sister, Carol Beatty; son, David; daughter, Jan; their spouses; and grandsons, Timothy and Patrick.

A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18., at Incarnation Catholic Church, 2901 Bee Ridge Road. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota.

Memorial contributions can be made to one’s favorite children’s or veteran’s charity.

WILLIAM GARDEN

Bill Garden, 87, of Longboat Key and Sarasota, died Oct. 27.

He was born in Toronto to William A. Garden and Jean M. Garden.

In 1966, Bill moved to Sarasota with his wife, Nancy, and two sons, Cody and Gene.

His third son, Kip, was born in Sarasota. Nancy died in 1990, and Bill remarried in 2002 to Sharon Byer.

From 1966 to 1999, Bill operated WRG Enterprises. He toured the world as a photographer and hosted fishing expeditions and tournaments in many places. He enjoyed nightlife and often threw lavish parties in his Longboat home that had a fullscale disco on the second floor.

While at Purdue, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the height of the Vietnam War. He was awarded a medal for valor and vowed to never sleep in a tent again.

Jerry had a legal career in Washington, D.C., working for RCA Licensing and Patent Operations. When General Electric Corp. acquired RCA, he became vice president of licensing. He was a marathoner, pilot, road cyclist, a two-time Porsche Sport Driving School graduate and a skier.

He is survived by Ron and Amy Lanyi and their children, Ronald and Lyn, Jo Banks and her children Chris and Maria Conroym and their children, Dennis Conray and Sandae Bonare and their children.

VETERANS The Longboat Key Rotary Club’s third annual Veterans Day Parade brought 150 veterans together for an afternoon of patriotism.

I

t might be called the world’s shortest parade, but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in pride.

The Longboat Key Rotary Club’s third annual Veterans Day Parade and Honor Program brought about 150 veterans together Nov. 11. The quarter-mile parade route was lined with residents, family members and friends cheering for Longboat Key’s bravest. American flags lined the path, as well.

The veterans marched by era: Persian Gulf War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Korean War and World War II. Family members followed.

“It’s a good recognition of the years of service put in by many residents,” U.S. Army veteran Barbara Rowe said.

As Tom Finnegan, a U.S. Army

veteran, looked around at the crowd gathering before the parade, he said he is always amazed at how many people served. For him, the parade is more about remembering his comrades than receiving thanks from residents.

“I appreciate it very much, but I always pray for the guys that got killed that didn’t come back and I went in with,” he said.

This year’s grand marshal was Harold Ronson, a Navy veteran who served from 1944 to 1946. Following the parade, he was the first speaker during the honor program. He said that when he looks at all the negativity in the world, he just thinks of the good men with whom he served.

Before Ronson spoke, Longboat Key Rotary Club President Jack Rozance welcomed the crowd. He said that whether the veterans in attendance served for two years or 28, they made a difference.

“It’s the most inspiring thing we’ve done to be a part of this,” Rozance said. “ I am totally inspired by our veterans and their families.”

Bacchus on the Beach celebrates food and wine

s the sun set, the wine kept flowing at the sixth annual Bacchus on the Beach.

The Stone Crab Celebration & Wine Auction Nov. 11 brought about 325 guests to the Longboat Key Club for an evening on the beach. The event benefited Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge and SCUBAnauts International.

Along with stone crab, chefs from the Longboat Key Club made dishes such as shrimp and scallop tacos. Various wineries were present offering samples from their vineyards, as well.

Sandra Rios, director of marketing and communications for the Resort at Longboat Key Club, said the event is a good way to celebrate all that Longboat Key has to offer.

“It represents the beginning of a new season,” she said.

embers of the Key Niners Women’s Golf Association enjoyed lunch and a show at their opening luncheon Nov. 1, but not before a round of golf.

Following a lunch of cold-poached salmon and herb-roasted chicken, Longboat Key Club Director of Golf Terry O’Hara announced the winners for the round

of golf and handed out raffle prizes, including a golf bag and shoes.

After, five members modeled clothes from the Longboat Key Club’s two pro shops in a short fashion show. Key Niners President Carol Meese welcomed back members and gave a briefing on the organization’s upcoming events.

ith the event named Doggone Good Time, the expectations were high Nov. 5 at Cedars Tennis Resort.

The event sold out in advance, and more than 150 were in attendance, according to organizer Sandra Ceshker.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit Donte’s Den, which specializes in finding homes for dogs when they no longer have anyone to care for them, extended care for animals when owners are ill, military boarding while owners are deployed and pet trusts.
