Mote volunteer celebrates 96th Coming to work on your birthday might not be an ideal way to spend the big day, but Mote Marine Aquarium volunteer Dwight Davis happily showed up for the morning briefing on Sept. 28, his 96th birthday. Davis, who formerly wrote a column with Virginia Sanders for the Longboat Observer about goings-on at Mote, got cake and a birthday card at the volunteers’ morning briefing on his big day. Mote President and CEO Michael Crosby came by and started up a second round of “Happy Birthday” to congratulate Davis.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce is a family business — or rather, in the business of family. Christine Rothberg, the chamber’s director of marketing and development, received a call at the end of a recent Business After Hours event that her husband had been in a traffic crash. Despite the familial crisis, she couldn’t have been in a better place as her fellow members jumped to action. Kevin Flankey, a chamber member and the owner of boutique transportation service Ghosts in Motion, was on site and offered to chauffer Rothberg to her husband’s side. He even drove the couple safely home afterwards. Rothberg’s husband is recovering.
