Jaleski returns for fifth commission run TERRY O’CONNOR NEWS EDITOR

Former Commissioner Gene Jaleski, 75, is ready for his fifth race for a seat on the Longboat Key Town Commission.

Jaleski won one of those races in 2009 and served on the commission for just more than a year, resigning midway through his two-year term in 2010.

Since then, Jaleski has remained active in island politics and often attends commission meetings.

“I’ll do this as long as I think people should hear all sides of the issues,” Jaleski said. “We need a vibrant electoral process.”

Jaleski will oppose former Mayor Jim Brown, 70, who is the chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board, in the race to succeed Younger, who will reach his term’s limit in March. Ironically, Younger was first appointed to the commission to finish Jaleski’s vacated term.

Jaleski, who considers himself a watchdog, says his campaign will revolve around preserving the residential way of life on Longboat Key. He said he’s the obvious choice for voters who want tourism limits.

“We are a residential neighborhood, and tourists and people who are residents don’t share the same place in terms of lifestyle,”

Jaleski said. “Jim Brown always says we need more tourists to support our local business. I’ve always disagreed. I’m on the right side of the issue.

“Basically, it comes down to tourism. He’d be for more, and I’m for less tourism.”

Jaleski made his first bid for the commission and lost to incumbent Robert Siekmann in March 2008 before defeating Randy Clair in March 2009.

After his resignation in May 2010, he lost bids in March 2013 and March 2015 to Commissioner Phill Younger.

Jaleski’s resignation came shortly after he made controversial remarks in an email about the former Longboat Key Public Interest Committee, including: “It seems that PIC may well be an acronym for People with Impaired Cognition.”

Although Jaleski apologized for his comments in his May 2010 letter of resignation, he attributes his resignation to other factors, including the $400 million proposed Longboat Key Club project that the commission was reviewing in public hearings at the time.

The commission went on to approve the project, which was then quashed by the 12th Judicial Circuit Court, and later, the 2nd District Court of Appeals.

“I no longer felt my goals were

compatible with the ‘Key Club Commission,’” Jaleski said. “I left that commission for moral reasons. I did not leave the community and have worked very hard for the community. I quit for the right reasons.”

Jaleski is the latest candidate to announce his bid for a commission seat opening in March.

Brown announced his campaign in September.

A week ago, George Spoll, 82, announced his campaign, so far unopposed, for the District 2 seat now held by Mayor Jack Duncan, who is at the end of his term’s limit.

Younger said he would endorse Brown as his successor.

“Jim Brown is a calm and wellreasoned person,” Younger said.

“He thinks very carefully before he makes a decision. He’s well respected in the community, and I totally support him.”

Incumbent District 4 Commissioner Jack Daly, 80, has announced he will run for a second term. Town Clerk Trish Granger received notification Daly’s candidate petitions have been certified by the Manatee Supervisor of Elections, which makes him the first official candidate in the March election cycle.

On Monday, Spoll’s candidate petitions were certified, making him the second Longboat Key commission candidate to qualify officially.

The deadline for candidates to file to run for all commission seats is noon Monday, Nov. 21.

Younger: Town needs code board changes Commissioner Phill Younger’s remarks were sparked by a recent $49,106 fine levied against a homeowner.

ncensed by a $49,106 fine levied against an absentee Longboat Key homeowner, Commissioner Phill Younger is calling for changes in the way the Code Enforcement Board does business.

Younger, who sat on the code board for roughly three years before becoming a commissioner, said the fine is just the latest evidence the Code Enforcement Board is ill-equipped to do its job.

“The bottom line, and I mean no disrespect to anybody who serves on the board, is it’s not working. It hasn’t been working,” Younger said. “We need to take a different approach.”

Younger said possible solutions include reducing the number of board members from seven to five, or having a magistrate operate the code board. The magistrate could be a lawyer who knows land-use laws and understands the codes, he said, although it does not have to be an attorney.

“Even while I was there, I realized there are people serving on it, although fine people, who weren’t really qualified to be doing what they were doing,” Younger said.

“That has continued to happen over the eight years I’ve been gone from them.”

Randy Mann, of Mount Sterling, Ky., received the $49,106 fine for alleged code violations involving a deteriorating fence, roof and drainage issues and unsound stairs. Mann accrued a $100 daily fine for the fence violation for 160 days, plus another $100 daily fine for the roof and drainage issues and a $50 daily fine for the staircase problems, both for a total 219 days. Administrative and recording fees were also added to the total.

It is by far the largest lien recorded by the town since 2000, according to Sandi Henley, budget analyst for the Longboat Key Finance Department.

The previous record was set in 2009, when a $13,250 lien

was attached to a Longboat Key homeowner’s property, according to Henley. That is the only code enforcement fine of more than $10,000 in the past 16 years, according to Henley’s research, with a few others topping $5,000.

Code board fines are converted into liens for collection purposes.

The commission will be asked to rule on whether it will wipe out the lien, reduce it or let it stand at its 7 p.m. Nov. 7 meeting, according to Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale.

Code board member Beverly Shapiro said she hopes the commissioners will “have their back” and uphold the fine, which she said was fair. She blames Mann for the bill, saying he ignored all inspection and violation notices.

“He waited until he was ready to make the changes,” she said.

“He wasn’t willing to do it for the town. I don’t think the town should lower the fine. I don’t feel sorry for the man.”

Shapiro said the code board’s biggest concerns are correcting safety issues and ensuring code compliance so one neighbor doesn’t interfere with another’s property.

“He thumbed his nose at the town,” Shapiro said.

The code board rejected an appeal from Mann, who was represented at the Oct. 10 hearing by real estate agent Tom Hanly, of Sarasota. Instead, the board recommended that the commission uphold its original fine.

Younger indicated the lien amount could be changed by commissioners.

“I have questions about the validity of some of the charges that were brought,” Younger said.

“That’s strictly my opinion. It is an unusually high lien.”

Hanly said his client is looking to lower the lien.

“What he said to me was when I told him the decision: ‘Should I get an attorney?’” Hanly said.

“It’s just a ridiculous amount of money.”

Through Hanly, Mann requested the lien be cut in half, which would still make it the largest code enforcement violation in Longboat Key history.

Mann wrote in a letter to Mayor Jack Duncan in September that said he began to work to correct violations shortly after learning the property was in violation.

“I just don’t know why it took so long to do the repairs,” Hanly said. “To me, that’s a mystery.

Once he contacted me, I got estimates. He said the house would be improved. He approved the estimates, and we did everything very quickly.”

Mann did not return repeated calls for comment from the Longboat Observer.

“Sitting on the other side, the amount that is involved … $50,000 is an awful lot of money considering the violations,” Hanly said. “There are many houses that were much, much worse eyesores than this.”

Mann’s home at 549 Hornblower Lane is now listed for sale at nearly $1.9 million. Mann bought the home in a short sale in 2010 for $1.2 million.

HOW THE CODE ENFORCEMENT PROCESS WORKS VIOLATION

Code enforcement staff receives a complaint or observes a potential violation and investigates. If a violation is found, the property owner is notified.

Longboat Pass renourishment hits target The Longboat Pass beach renourishment project hit its sand targets almost exactly, according to Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa.

The town contracted to place 205,000 cubic yards on the eroded beach. The final volume measured, or the amount the contractor was paid to place was 204,702 cubic yards. The gross placement volume, or total amount placed was 215,409 cubic yards.

The Longboat Key Police Department investigated a string of vehicle break-ins reported between 5:54 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. Oct. 16, on the north end of the island.

A boat owner visiting from Lakeland reported $2,150 worth of gear was taken sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 4:30 a.m. Sunday from his vessel in a Longbeach Village parking lot.

Police could not check for prints because it had rained overnight and all surfaces were wet, according to the report.

At 8:53 a.m. the same day, a Bradenton Beach man reported that someone entered his covered gray Mercedes-Benz that was parked in the 300 block of North Shore Road. The vehicle was unlocked, and the battery was disconnected. Nothing was reported missing.

2016 Ford convertible, too, but did not gain entry.

Six prints were processed from the passenger door of the Mercedes, according to the report.

While investigating these vehicle burglaries, a Longboat Key police officer found a white 2002 Suzuki SUV in the same parking lot with an unlocked passenger door and contents from the glove department strewn on the seat, according to a report. The vehicle’s owner was out of state and could not be reached.

All prints had been wiped, the report states.

Absentee ballot request deadline is Nov. 2 The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 8 election is Wednesday, Nov. 2.

The ballot includes two referendum questions that will determine whether the owners of the Whitney Plaza and Harbour Square properties can add density, in addition to national, state and local races.

Brown expresses doubts about Colony TIMELINE

Planning and Zoning Board Chairman Jim Brown isn’t sure there’s room to grow the property’s footprint.

Planning and Zoning Board Chairman Jim Brown has his doubts about plans to redevelop the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort.

“We really haven’t been shown what he’s going to do,” said Brown, referring to Orlandobased developer Chuck Whittall, who is working with the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association’s board of directors to redevelop the property. “I have great fears he can’t do some of what he’s proposing to do because there’s not enough land.”

Brown, who served six years on the Longboat Key Town Commission, including four years as mayor, told the Longboat Observer that the Colony Resort redevelopment is one of the last major Longboat Key projects given the island is 98% built-out already.

“Put it in terms of zoning: There is currently no zoning on Longboat Key that allows hotels and residential (on the same site),” Brown said. “We know the Colony is proposing to do that.

We are looking at that to see if it will be allowed or how it can be allowed.”

“We’re going to control density,” Brown said. “We do not want to be a congested built-up place like others are, and we’re trying to protect that.”

Whittall said his project features only 60% of the new Zota Beach Resort’s density, with 24 units per acre for his Colony proposal compared with more than 40 for Zota, the former Hilton Longboat Key Beachfront Resort.

Brown pointed out Whittall’s

proposal calls for 180 new building units, which he doesn’t believe will be possible given the 65-foot maximum building height in the town codes.

Meanwhile, Whittall praised the planning board for amending the town’s comprehensive plan at its Oct. 18 meeting at Town Hall.

The ordinance repeals and replaces plan elements such as conservation and coastal management, housing, capital improvements,

stormwater and recreation and open space – all of which affect Whittall’s plans.

Brown said the update was long overdue and not directed at the Colony Resort project.

“We legally are warned, ‘Do not talk about specific projects,’” Brown said. “It applies to all the properties. Mr. Whittall was at our meeting. Yes, it affects him, but it’s not about him.”

Columbia president reveals plans for Pattigeorge’s site Richard Gonzmart plans to invest $3 million to $4 million to build a new restaurant at the location.

The former Pattigeorge’s Restaurant on Longboat Key will be torn down and redeveloped as a 200seat eatery yet to be named by the

Columbia Restaurant Group.

CRG President Richard Gonzmart, 63, said the new 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot restaurant will cost from $3 million to $4 million to build. He paid $1.9 million for the property.

Site plans have been filed with the Longboat Key Planning, Zoning and Building Department, according to Director Alaina Ray. An estimated 100 employees will be on payroll, Gonzmart said.

Gonzmart said he appreciates the beauty of the island. Synergy with the Bayfront Park improvement project just south of the property at 4120 Gulf of Mexico Drive helped him settle on the

site, despite resistance from those close to him who had reservations about the location and the aging 54-year-old structure on it.

“The city seemed very committed to preserving waterfront dining in Longboat Key,” he said.

“I was encouraged by that.”

The application was filed Oct. 6 by LBK Real Estate Holding LLC of Tampa. The architect is Jeffrey Shannon of Tampa.

The new facility will be flood protected, promote public access to the waterfront and offer pedestrian and bicycle access to Bayfront Park, according to Matthew Campo, of Campo Engineering in Tampa. Campo said he is unsure when construction will begin because variance requests have yet to be approved.

The application seeks variances to eliminate the Sarasota Bay waterfront yard, which means the new restaurant will be situated on the shore without hanging over the water as it does now, and reduce the size of parking spaces from 10 feet by 20 feet to 10 feet by 18 feet.

Gonzmart said he’s not yet ready to reveal a name or a concept for his new dining space.

The goal is to use produce, seafood and fruits harvested and grown in the United States, he said. Sometimes, it’s not easy.

“Most of our shrimp comes from the Gulf of Mexico,” Gonzmart said.

Gonzmart said he’s in it for the long haul on Longboat Key. “We don’t do projects for short-term gain,” he said. “Some people say I’m crazy, but to me, short term is 10 years or less.”

Vern Buchanan How would you articulate what you advocate the country’s energy policy to be?

Our country needs a comprehensive, balanced energy plan that keeps consumer prices and costs low and reduces our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. An all-of-the-above energy policy that encourages the development of all types of fuel keeps us safer and will make us more prosperous. The average Floridian pays nearly $130 per month to power their home — 14% higher than the national average. I oppose new energy taxes because I want to reduce these costs.

How, specifically, would you reform our tax code?

We need a simpler and fairer tax code that reduces taxes on ordinary Americans and eliminates corporate loopholes. The tax code is five times as long as the Bible. As a member of the U.S. House’s tax-writing committee, my goal is enact policies that help grow our economy and create jobs here at home. That means easing the burden on small businesses, which employ more than 3 million Floridians. Energy policy has many elements, but three goals appear to predominate.

Reducing dependence on foreign oil is a major energy and foreign policy goal. Every drop produced in this country as opposed to abroad means more jobs, economic growth and reduction of trade deficits.

Reducing energy costs and its flip side of increasing efficiency are fairly obvious.

Climate change is a major consideration. The 2015 Paris Agreement is a step forward, but it consists more of aspirations than firm commitments and lacks effective enforcement mechanisms.

How, specifically, would you reform our tax code?

With regard to individual taxes, the rallying cry by our opponent for tax “simplification” is deceptive ... Flat rates and the like typically mean that the rich pay less, and the middle class and working poor, more.

While on paper United States corporate taxes are among the highest in the world, effective rates are quite different. A recent prominent study found that for each dollar the 50 largest companies paid in federal taxes between 2008 and 2014, they received $27 in boons.

Put aside the candidates’ sins and flaws. Think instead about the best path forward to lighten the next generations’ debt burden and improve their standard of living.

he comments are universal: Everyone is exhausted, exasperated, sick … sick of the depths this election cycle has fallen.

Neither major political party’s presidential candidate has the character nor the temperament that Americans want in the Oval Office.

George Washington must be weeping in his grave.

So try putting the leading candidates’ character traits and past sins aside. Put a hood over their heads, or one over your own head and think of that vote atop your ballot as a vote for the future direction of the United States of America.

Forget the personalities. Think about what you want for your children. For your grandchildren. Your great-grandchildren.

That is the decision to be made.

Who — not just in the presidential race, but among all of the candidates — will best represent, promote and defend the best path for our nation and future generations?

If you haven’t voted yet, set aside your emotions, and start your analysis pragmatically. Put your emphasis on economics, on our nation’s financial well-being.

To be sure, all of us know about money. And all of us know about debt. And we know that when the interest on our debts — credit cards, auto loans, home loans — consumes larger and larger shares of our income, we know we are poorer, weaker and less secure. Less secure to be able

to handle that unexpected health crisis. Less secure for the flood. Less secure when the economy collapses and we have no job. Less secure for retirement.

This is the path we are on in the United States — $20 trillion in debt, $76 trillion if you include all of Medicare and Social Security’s unfunded liabilities. And it’s growing. Our nation is growing weaker and less secure by the minute. And we are passing this burden on to the next generations, sentencing them to lower standards of living. Admit it: You know this in your heart.

What’s more, here is one of the ugliest, most destructive parts of traveling this path: Few Americans realize that this debt is a pernicious daily tax, a spreading cancer that is destroying their standard of living even today. Every day, the federal government prints more money to fund the federal government’s spending, that additional money supply devalues every dollar in your and your children’s pockets. It makes all of us poorer than we realize. It also makes us less free. When you owe, you are in bondage.

Is that the path you want for your grandchildren, to leave for your heirs?

When the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they established what they believed, with all their hearts, with their blood, to be the moral foundation for a free society. Thomas Jefferson expressed it in those words that Americans still value and defend with their lives today: “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness …”

Leave us alone, they said; tyranny from a ruling power will never be tolerated. The passion for liberty was so great in parts of the country after the American Revolution that many wanted no government at all.

Fifteen years later, the Founders followed the Declaration of Indepen-

dence from British tyranny with the Constitution — enumerating limited powers of a new federal government.

Today, few of us — liberal or conservative — could argue that over the past 240 years, our representatives in Washington, unfortunately too often with voters’ consent, have emasculated and strayed from the limits the Founders placed on the federal government in the original Constitution.

Just look at the size and extent of that government — more than 5 million employees, $3.8 trillion in annual spending (20% of the entire U.S. economy) and $76 trillion in debt.

Or look at the vicious and spreading assaults on the First and Second Amendments — codified among our unalienable rights.

If you believe in the Declaration of Independence and what the Founders succinctly spelled out in Amendment X in the Constitution — e.g. “The powers not delegated to the United States … are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people” — then examine closely the paths that the two presidential candidates have laid out for our future.

Which one prescribes a fiscal path that will lighten the destructive burden on future generations? Which one prescribes a path that will give the next generations greater freedom to pursue happiness? Which one prescribes a path that more closely aligns with the Founders’ visions of a free society in the Declaration of Independence and a restrained, limited government in the Constitution?

Go to the websites of the presidential candidates. Read their plans.

Put your emotions aside. Keep the bags over the candidates’ heads and character flaws. Conduct your own dispassionate litmus tests for whose policies will lead to more freedom or more serfdom. Draw your own conclusions.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is right about this: There is “A Better Way.” Think of what we’re leaving the next generations.

The pivotal issue in this year’s Charter Review Board race was obviously and without question the attempt by a hardright wing of the Sarasota Republican Party to convert the board from an elected to an appointed board.

The five Democrats who formed our slate did so chiefly to combat this nondemocratic, nonpopulist move, and we won!

We were able to shame Bob Waechter and his supporters on the current board, which included Jody Hudgins and five of the other board members (excluding Pat Wayman and Donna Barcomb) into finally voting this ill-conceived proposal down. On Sept. 28, they unanimously agreed to drop this proposal.

Now, we are all fighting for a fairer, healthier, more democratic election process, which we believe could be achieved by single-member district voting.

But rather than address the real issues, you once again just ride your high horse and spout the tried and untrue nonsense about supporting “freedom” — waving the flag and attacking Democrats wholesale.

Todd Barton What qualifies you for this elected position?

I have spent my entire career in court system administration, some 40 years of experience.

For 21 years, I served as clerk of the court in Kings County, Calif.

I have managed staffs of up to 600 people, budgets of upward of $15 million and revenues of over $100 million ...

This included shepherding our office through the recession in 2007 and 2008, where we were able to cut our budget by almost half with no loss of services to the citizens and no layoffs of staff.

In 2012, I led that administration in a major building project wherein we were able to trim $39 million (almost onethird) from the cost projections on a new county court administration complex.

We had an annual staff turnover consistently under 6%, which is a huge cost-saver and stands in stark contrast to the current 16% turnover in Sarasota County.

If elected, what would be your top three priorities?

First, there is the problem of poor culture, employee dissatisfaction and high turnover that needs to be addressed.

After two political newcomers defeated incumbents in the primaries for the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board, the executive-rich governing body may soon include more health care workers.

On Nov. 8, voters will decide who will fill five seats on the board that oversees Sarasota Memorial Hospital in races that include four nurses.

Susan Tucker defeated Hospital Board Vice Chairwoman Marguerite Malone in August, and Sharon Wetzler DePeters beat incumbent John de Jongh.

Tucker will face a fellow registered nurse, Cheryl Brandi, while Wetzler DePeters is running against Democrat Kevin Connolly, president of a local shade structure company. Former physician Miglena Entcheva is vying for the second at-large seat against local banker Tramm Hudson, while Jody Davenport, a registered nurse and Democrat, faces incumbent former IBM executive William Noonan.

ing Committee called potential voters and went door to door to promote the four Democrats and no-party-affiliation candidate — none of whom is an incumbent.

“NNOC endorsed all five Democratic candidates running for the board because we are deeply committed to improving staffing levels and patient safety at Sarasota Memorial,” Davenport said in a news release.

The move to unseat current board members runs counter to comments from the head of a political action committee cre-

ated in 2014 to push for SMH to remain public when rumors swirled that Gov. Rick Scott planned to lobby for the sale of the hospital. In fact, none of the 11 candidates has said he or she would support privatization.

“The hospital has been on a very good run the last few years,” said Morgan Bentley, spokesman and co-founder of Save Our Community Hospital, which has raised more than $147,000 since its inception. “We typically will congratulate and support incumbents that make that happen.”

The PAC has sent out two mailers supporting incumbents Hudson, Noonan and Meister.

As SMH moves to expand into south county, the Hospital Board will oversee decisions regarding potential sites in Venice and North Port, along with the tax rate residents pay to maintain the health care system.

SMH also plans to open a facility in Newtown, along with a $50 million, 44-bed rehabilitation facility that is under construction at its main site.

What’s your stance on the county’s pursuit of a comeas-you-are homeless shelter and a jail diversion program?

With the past several years of struggle, the Sarasota City Commission and the County Commission together have developed plans that, at some point, will be the best in the state of Florida. These plans got disjointed during the public discourse, but I believe the need for a come-as-you-are shelter and a jail diversion program are both integral parts to meeting the needs of homeless men and women in our communities. Critical to the model will be mental health and substance abuse counseling, as well as life skills, budgeting, etc. Collaboration between the governments, and public-private partnerships will make the difference in this mission.

What does the county need to do to help create more affordable housing?

The county should address this need first by holding those who choose to develop new property to the requirements the County Commission approved many years ago.

I have a 19-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son. My daughter is off to college, and my son will be off within the year. The statistical odds of them coming back here and having a career here are very concerning to me, which led me to run and bring more economic diversity and career creation here.

What does the county need to do to help create more affordable housing?

First, the county doesn’t create anything. Government doesn’t create anything. The free market entrepreneurial world creates things. The government can either enhance that or create hurdles. I think we need to have a very, very thoughtful discussion as a community here that we need to be a little careful that the most well-intentioned ideas could hurt the people we are trying to help.

For example, you have a subdivision that is approved for 100 homes, and the government forces affordable housing on 15 of them. We have to be careful that the developer trying to get a proper return on investment on the property would increase the price on the other 85 homes, and we’re hurting the very people we are trying to help.

What’s your stance on the county’s pursuit of a comeas-you-are homeless shelter and jail diversion program?

My vision, hopefully, is going to be a little bigger than that. I think as a community, we need to have at least some thoughtful discussion about putting together a special purpose district here, which would be a voter referendum that would provide a long-term funding strategy. We could come with the most wonderful idea of how to deal with homelessness, but at the end of the day we have to figure out how to pay for it. With a voter-backed referendum for long-term funding, I think it would serve two different purposes. What are the top three issues facing Sarasota County that the commission would have to address in your term?

I feel the most serious problem facing our county is the result of the disrespect shown to the 2020 and the 2050 comprehensive plans, as carried out by the actions of our present County Commission. These actions do not support a smart growth philosophy. To correct this, I would first go back to these plans and re-evaluate them with citizen input. I would also plan for sustainable economic goals by implementing jobs and by not overdeveloping the land.

Sarasotans need to be able to live where they work; housing that is affordable to residents at all ages and stages of life is important to the balance in any community. We will need to work to increase the affordable living spaces so people employed in our county can enjoy the benefits of Sarasota’s quality of life.

It should come as no surprise that Bob Graham, the Democratic former U.S. senator and governor, is supporting Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential contest.

Graham spoke to a crowd of approximately 120 at the Longboat Key Democratic Club’s meeting Tuesday.

Graham joked about his upcoming 80th birthday and noted that club President Murray Bluegrass will be celebrating one as well.

And while he said he appreciated the applause, he said the two of them would happily accept cards or gifts.

Graham told the crowd that because they’ve been dedicated to supporting Clinton, the state of America has improved, but said their work isn’t finished.

He evoked the memory of Sidney J. Catts, a Democrat who won Florida’s 1916 Democratic nomination for governor until a recount was ordered. He came in second. After that, Catts formed the Prohibition Party and won the election. This example served to keep the focus on Clinton until the end of election night.

“Let’s don’t sit on our laurels until after the polls close on November the 8th,” he said.

Florida holds a powerful position as a swing state in the 2016 election, and Graham said Florida Democrats should look to California for inspiration on turning the state solidly blue. Only in the past 20 years has California has consistently voted for Democrats.

Following the speech, Graham signed copies of the book he wrote with Chris Hand, “America, the Owner’s Manual: Making Government Work for You.” Graham has been visiting Longboat for more than 50 years and said he is impressed with how it continues to grow.

He also offered a bit of advice.

“As a citizen you have the capability to make changes, and the key is to be motivated and skilled in terms of how to do that and be persistent,” he said.

She was born and raised in Pittsburgh to Samuel Morante and Stella Bell and was a Longboat resident for the past 25 years.

She loved vacationing with her husband, Carmine Durzo, daughters and granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, John Bell. She is survived by her husband, daughters Laura Indovina Bendtsen and Debra Indovina Akerley; their spouses; sister Helen Tortorete; and four grandchildren.

He was born Sept. 25, 1926, to the late James and Catherine Bowen.

He graduated in the class of 1944 from Hudson High School, where he played hockey and baseball. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a seaman first class aboard the USS-ABSD-6. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal.

Mr. Bowen began dating his future wife, Jean, shortly thereafter. The two married in 1956 and spent their days perfecting the jitterbug.

Mr. Bowen was town assessor for Hudson for 25 years and founded Hudson Youth Hockey.

In recognition of his more than 25 years of service to the town he was awarded Official Citations by both the Massachusetts House and Senate in 1981. In 1966, he began coaching hockey to Worcester Polytechnic Institute and was actively involved in sports. He worked at the Lamson Lumber Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1986.

Upon his retirement, Leonard and Jean spent their winters on Longboat Key and summers on Hampton Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; brother P. Bowen Jr.; and sister Eileen Mills.

He is survived by sons Leonard Bowen Jr., Thomas Bowen, Brian Bowen, Robert Bowen and their wives; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hudson Youth Athletic Association, c/o Hudson Recreation Department, 78 Main St., Hudson, MA, 01749.

MICHAEL GIORDANO Michael Giordano, 51, died Oct. 18.

He was born April 5, 1965, to Samuel and Carmela Giordano.

He managed his own lawn care businesses and was the grounds supervisor at the Beach Harbor Club for 21 years.

He will be remembered for his wit and charm throughout the community.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, and daughter, Gabriella.

ALFRED WOLKENBERG

Alfred Wolkenberg, 92, of Lido Beach and Long Island N.Y., died Oct. 18.

He graduated from Long Island University and Brooklyn Law School and was a practicing attorney for 60 years. He was a World War II veteran and was a past president of the Long Beach Lawyers Association. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel on Longboat Key. He was preceded in death by his brother Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Alice; son, Joey; daughter, Carol Wagner; their spouses; two grandchildren; siblings Joan Biller and Barbara Solomon; and nieces and nephews.

The group held its welcome back luncheon Oct. 18., and some attendees dressed up in their Halloween best, including witch and pirate costumes. After attending a service at the church, the women enjoyed lunch and desserts before guest speaker Virginia Holleran took the stage. Holleran is a representative from the Christ Child Society.

Each attendee was asked to bring an item to donate to Casa San Juan Bosco II, a project of Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice Inc. Through the project, a community center and 44 singlefamily homes were built. Donated items included blankets, linens and cleaning supplies.

lthough it’s still a few days away, those at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium Oct. 21 were already feeling the Halloween spirit.

From princesses and superheroes, to policemen and mermaids, there were all sorts of characters at Mote’s annual Night of Fish, Fun and Fright.

The Halloween celebration invites kids and their parents to dress up for a night of fun that includes trick-or-treating, live music, underwater pumpkin carving by staff, face painting and various Mommy and Me sessions.

Gus Owen, 4, who moved to the area in May with his mom, Michelle, said he was most looking forward to the games.

Jamie and Scott Jalwan attended in celebration of their son Connor’s first Halloween. This year, the family of the three was dressed as a chef, steak and lobster.

One thing they’re excited about for future Halloweens: “Dressing up in coordinated costumes,” Jamie Jalwan said.

The Jalwans weren’t the only ones to coordinate costumes. Between families of ghosts and Ghostbusters and moms and daughters dressed as Elsa and Anna from “Frozen,” it was clear the event was centered around family.

Trinity Lemurian, 6, dressed as a mermaid, while her mom, Lisamichelle, posed as a net that was trying to catch her.

This was Trinity’s fifth time attending the event.

Circus by the Sea brings big top to Mote

hile Sailor Circus Academy students juggled, roller-skated, flipped and performed aerial silk routines, guests of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium looked on in awe.

The students performed as part of Circus by the Sea, an event hosted by Mote and the Circus Arts Conservatory as part of InspireSarasota!, a twoweek celebration of arts and culture in Sarasota. The students performed twice Oct. 22, giving Mote visitors an extra treat during their walk through the aquarium.

The Sailor Circus Academy is the oldest youth circus in America. Students range in age from 8 to 18.

Bird Key unveils new marina

I

t was two years in the making, but Bird Key Yacht Club’s new marina is now complete.

The club unveiled the multimilliondollar expansion Oct. 22 at the MarinaFest celebration. About 260 people attended the event that included bagpipers and a Champagne christening of the new docks.

The new marina wasn’t the only thing to celebrate, though. Event chairman Bill Jacobs said the club will bring back the Sarasota Bay Cup Regatta in April. This year, the regatta will support a charitable organization: Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.

Michael Crosby, president and CEO of Mote, said Mote will participate in the race on a 1982 72-foot Catalina sailboat.

Crosby described the significance of the partnership, noting that many of Mote’s restoration efforts occur on Sarasota Bay, which Bird Key overlooks.

The new marina boasts 780 linear feet of new seawall, 48 boat slips, 18 boat lifts, a double kayak lift and other amenities such as Wi-Fi and security systems. Duncan Seawall Dock and Boatlift was the primary contractor.

Brian McCarthy, project manager for the new marina, said the original marina was built 54 years ago at the same time as the club and had reached the end of its life.

“It’s a great milestone for the club,” McCarthy said.

Food and wine lovers have a reason to celebrate: The sixth annual Bacchus on the Beach is near.

The stone crab celebration and wine auction will bring winemakers and producers together Nov. 10-11 at the Resort at the Longboat Key Club. The event benefits Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge and SCUBAnauts International.

The two-night event begins with wine dinners on Thursday night. The second night is all about stone crabs during the Stone Crab and Winemaker Auction. About 600 pounds of stone crab will be laid out for guests to

Longboat officials putt for Bayfront Park project

F

ive Longboat Key town officials took a swing at raising money for the Bayfront Park revitalization project.

During Ocean Properties Ltd.’s annual charity golf tournament Oct. 15, the officials took turns putting on three holes on the Longboat Key Club’s putting green. Each hole-in-one earned $1,000. A two putt was worth $500, and a three putt was worth $250.

Overall, the town received $10,000 from Ocean Properties to go toward the revitalization of Bayfront Park.

Ocean Properties also donated a total of $300,000 to eight charities through the tournament.
