Heron about town There’s a tall, mysterious fellow who keeps popping up around Longboat Key. He hangs out with the anglers, sits for a spell on the bay and goes for long walks on the beach. You might have seen him — or maybe one of his relatives. Henry the Heron, as he’s been dubbed by his fans, has been popping up on Longboat Key over the past year. It may or may not be the same bird every time, but watchers have spotted him trying (unsuccessfully) to get a handout from anglers, assimilating into a family on the beach and reigning over mid-island. If you see a blue heron, chances are it’s our guy.

A new kind of Amore

70 students in Longboat Although there’s no accounting for students who attend private school or are officially home-schooled, the town recently learned how many Longboat Key children go to public schools in Manatee or Sarasota counties. The answer: 70 — 32 in Sarasota County Schools (including four enrolled at charter schools) and 38 in Manatee County Schools.
