Edith Barr Dunn’s legacy continues Last week, the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club received an anoynmous $5,000 donation toward the Edith Barr Dunn Scholarship for students in the nursing field.

“Edith had a longtime relationship with the Kiwanis Club and helped out at fundraisers with her 50/50 raffle,” the donor said. “This is on Edith’s behalf, and she would be very pleased even though she’s no longer with us.”

Crowd fails to unplug utilities plan BOATHOUSE FIX FLOATS

It was 1:13 a.m. Jan. 5, when the Longboat Key Town Commission’s 7 p.m. Jan. 4 meeting adjourned. Yes, the meeting lasted six hours and 13 minutes — a possible record, according to Town Clerk Trish Granger.

The crowd filled commission chambers — where a maximum 80 seats are allowed — and the lobby and antechambers, where another 70 seats were set up with TV screens nearby.

And just in case the crowd exceeded 150, the town had a plan to move the meeting to Temple Beth Israel down the road.

Dozens of people spoke to either support or denounce an ordinance that contains referendum language for a neighborhood and side street project to bury above-ground power lines.

If voters approve it, the plan will eliminate aerial wires islandwide.

Despite pleas for a more equitable funding formula from residents with above-ground power lines, the commission voted 5-2 to continue with a referendum that will ask voters March 15 if the town can issue bonds not to exceed $23.85 million for the project.

Commissioners Phill Younger and Pat Zunz voted against it.

If approved, property owners with existing underground utilities would pay for 18.5% of the project’s cost; owners with above-ground utilities would pay for 81.5% — $8,500.60 if they paid upfront or $527.36 annually

“We don’t want it and we didn’t ask for it,” said Longbeach Village resident Allan Luke. “Give us the ability to opt out of this.”

Sleepy Lagoon resident Jules Rauch said many residents on a fixed income can’t afford it.

“Whenever we get a heavy rain, our streets flood,” Rauch said.

“That’s our problem. Not the electric. Most of us are retired, and I don’t think it’s fair or equitable.”

Former Mayor and current Revitalization Task Force Chairman George Spoll and board member Lenny Landau presented a universal funding solution in which every parcel owner would pay $143 annually for 30 years for

the neighborhood project, plus costs of upgraded connections that could be needed.

But the majority of the commission didn’t budge.

“If you think you can push these (property owners with buried power lines) people to pay any more than what we’ve proposed, I think you’re wrong,” said Commissioner Irwin Pastor.

Owners of 149 boat slips at the Boathouse on Longboat marina, 408 Gulf of Mexico Drive, who voiced opposition in the last 10 days to being charged assessments of $1,660.52 each for a Gulf of Mexico Drive undergrounding project that voters approved in November got good news Monday night.

The Longboat Key Town Commission reduced the original assessment of $2,494.77 per owner to $29.68 up front or $1.94 per year over 30 years at a 4.5% interest rate.

Although the Boathouse is set up as a condo association, the boat slips are nothing more than air and slats of wood for boat storage. The new configuration assesses slips as a single parcel.

The town will use part of a $570,000 contingency fund to recoup the $170,000 the town won’t assess due to the modification.

There hasn’t been a more outspoken advocate of the town’s much-discussed referendum to bury Longboat Key’s power lines and utilities over the last year than Country Club Shores resident Bob Gault.

Gault, the former CEO of Universal Studios Orlando who retired in 2006 from a 42-year career in the entertainment park industry, pushed strongly in meeting comments and emails to residents and commissioners to convince people that a referendum to bury Gulf of Mexico Drive power lines and utilities is the first of two steps to keep Longboat Key “a top-notch premier community.”

Voters approved that $25.25 million referendum in November, but for Gault it was just the first step.

The day after voters approved the referendum by 562 votes, Gault emailed the Longboat Key Town Commission, informing all seven commissioners that Country Club Shores is prepared to bury its own wires and utility lines through a special assessment district if the town doesn’t do so.

Gault requested meetings with each commissioner individually to discuss the approach, but he never had to meet with them.

Gault’s proactive approach, along with input commissioners received over the last few months from other constituents, led the commission to proceed with another referendum early Tuesday morning that asks voters to approve a $23.85 million neighborhood and side street project that will eliminate every pole and above-ground wire on Longboat Key if approved by voters.

The commission previously discussed a neighborhood project once estimated at $18.8 million that would only be voted on and funded by residents of above-ground communities. But commissioners wanted to find a fairer, more equitable way to fund that project.

“From a Country Club Shores standpoint, we want to get our neighborhoods done next, as expeditiously as possible, to reduce the cost if it’s done along with the GMD project,” Gault said.

He thinks residents need to understand that the second referendum gives the island a leg up in several areas.

“It’s critical to make us competitive, and it’s clearly a benefit for us in terms of the real estate market,” Gault said.

commissioners individually over the phone about the importance of the second referendum and continues to advocate for its importance to any registered voter willing to listen.

“Our top priority is to help get out a ‘yes’ vote in March,” Gault wrote in an email Tuesday to residents. “This will be a monumental improvement to our beautiful island, again benefiting all aesthetically as well as improving electric and digital service,” Gault said.

Gault, though, is still working behind the scenes to see what’s necessary to bury his community’s wires if the referendum fails in March.

Gault plans to meet with Town Manager Dave Bullock soon to discuss what needs to be done to hold a referendum in August to create a district to bury the community’s wires.

“I believe it will pass to the benefit of all with our continued support,” Gault wrote in his email. “But we need to be prepared should the referendum fail to get approval.”

If you’re involved in anything on Longboat Key, chances are you know Susan Phillips.

The busy assistant to the town manager is also president of the Longboat Key Garden Club and chairwoman of the scholarship committees of both the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key and the Garden Club.

“I feel so blessed to live and work here, and I just want to give back,” Phillips said. “I love building a better community and building relationships and support for community issues and projects. I just get a kick out of that and seeing some positive results for the town I love so much.”

Last year, with Phillips at the helm, the Kiwanis Club awarded $66,500 in scholarships to 35 local students, and the Garden Club awarded $10,275 to three students.

“I’m so proud of helping our future, which is our children,” Phillips said. “It is a huge undertaking to raise the funds and administer the scholarship process. I plan to work with both the Garden Club and the Kiwanis Club to raise funds and award record numbers of scholarships to local students and grants to nonprofit organizations this year.”

As president of the Garden Club, Phillips looks forward to its many upcoming community events, including the Taste of the Keys and Fashion Show Jan. 27 and the 40th annual Home & Garden Tour March 5.

In April 2015, Phillips chaired the first combined event between the Garden Club and Kiwanis Club. The Dinner and a Movie, a drive-in event on the Longboat Key Club Islandside golf course, raised $7,000 for scholarships for both clubs. It will be held again April 30.

Professionally, Phillips plans to continue finding ways to better the community.

“We strive to provide exceptional service to our citizens, and I believe we make a positive difference every day,” she said. “I’m excited about our management team completing many projects we have worked on so diligently over the past year and moving forward with new initiatives of high priority to the Town Commission.”

Phillips moved to Longboat Key in 1998 and has sat through more Longboat Key Town Commission meetings than any commissioner. She has served as assistant to town managers Dave Bullock and Bruce St. Denis.

One of Phillips’ proudest achievements of 2015, which combined her professional and personal life, was the future Bayfront Park. Both the Kiwanis Club and Garden Club raised money for it, and she has worked behind-the-scenes at Town Hall.

“Bayfront Park demonstrates how our community comes together to support a common cause,” Phillips said. “It will commence soon and once completed will be an exceptional community park, exceeding everyone’s expectations.”

Thanks to Carol Erker, the dogs of Longboat Key will have one more reason to wag their tails in 2016.

Last summer, Erker, president of the Rotary Club of Longboat Key, pushed the club to raise $10,170 for an off-leash dog park at the new Bayfront Park.

“I think it will be a great place for residents of Longboat Key to congregate with their pets,” she said.

Longboat Key’s Rotary Club has advocated for a dog park since its founding in 2014. It raised money at its Hot Diggity Dog parade, which was part of the town’s Fourth of July celebration, and an anonymous donor donated several thousand dollars in September.

Erker hopes part of the funds will go toward a water station.

“I hope to have a water feature that dogs will find refreshing in the hot climate,” Erker said. “I felt the water was not something some dog parks have done well.”

Erker, a former real estate attorney, moved to Longboat Key from Barrington, Ill., in 2014. A Rotarian since 1987, she joined Longboat Key’s chapter when she moved.

Welcome to the dais, District 1 Commissioner elect Armando Linde and District 5 Commissioner elect Ed Zunz.

Linde or Zunz didn’t have to campaign for office, because they had no challengers. But the newest Longboat Key commissioners, who will assume their new roles in March, are up for a challenge that requires lots of volunteer time with no pay or benefits.

Linde will serve in the seat Commissioner Lynn Larson will leave in March after three consecutive two-year terms. Term limit requirements prevented Larson from running for another term.

Zunz, a retired litigation attorney, steps into the commission seat his wife, Pat, has held since 2011.

The two commissioners couldn’t be more different on many topics.

Zunz lives in Lands End, and his main priority is revitalization of the north end, which includes several structures that have been vacant for years. He questions the town’s effort to bury aboveground utilities islandwide and thinks the commission should have handled the issue differently.

in Country Club Shores, and his main wish for the Key is that voters approve a second referendum to bury power lines in neighborhoods and side streets in March.

Zunz wants a roundabout at Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway as soon as possible.

He thinks it was a mistake to put all of the town’s BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement money — approximately $968,000 — into pension funds.

Linde thinks the revision of the town’s land-use development codes and comprehensive plan — and doing it more efficiently than the town has over the last three years is more important than a roundabout at the north end. And the retired economist from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) supports the decision to use the town’s BP settlement to pay down its $23 million in pension debt.

But there’s one thing the new commissioners from opposite ends of the island both agree on: “I’m committed to serving this island the best I can and am up for the challenge,” Linde said.

Zunz shares that commitment.

The town manager has millions of dollars in capital projects to oversee in 2016, but none is as important to him as obtaining permits to renourish the island’s shoreline.

No one has more Longboat Key projects to oversee in 2016 than Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock.

He recently started his fifth year as town manager, but Bullock, the former deputy county administrator of Sarasota County, expects 2016 will be his busiest year to date.

“There’s a lot of stuff to do,” Bullock said. “It keeps me busy, and I enjoy what’s going on.”

On his to-do list for fiscal 2016: three beach projects totaling more than $23 million; implementing a $25.25 million project to bury power lines on Gulf of Mexico Drive and overseeing a March referendum for a $23.85 million neighborhood and side street undergrounding project; construction on a $3.11 million revamped Bayfront Park; and negotiating contracts with the Longboat Key police and fire unions.

But Bullock says none of those projects is as important as bringing approximately 200,000 cubic yards of sand apiece from passes on the north and south ends of the Key’s shoreline and approximately 250,000 cubic yards of sand to the middle of the Key. Whose development project proposal will Colony Beach & Tennis Resort unit owners select? All unit owner eyes are on Manfred Welfonder and Chuck Whittall in 2016.

Welfonder vs. Whittall: In Colony Beach & Tennis Resort speak, it’s the latest battle in a larger eight-year legal war to resurrect the shuttered resort.

In 2016, the one thing that’s close to certain for the dilapidated resort at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive: Unit owners will decide whether to support a development proposal by either Manfred Welfonder or Chuck Whittall — or opt to auction off their 15 acres of units to the highest bidder as bankruptcy litigation and appeals are resolved.

Whittall, president of Orlando-based Unicorp National Development LLC, has been working to develop the resort for two years. He has a contract to purchase the assets of Colony Lender LLC, which include 2.3 acres of recreational property in the middle of the vacant resort.

Whittall presented a $30 million all-cash proposal to unit owners Dec. 15 that offers most owners $126,000 for their units or 30 days of guaranteed use at the resort each year, plus an extra $200,000 payout to owners of beachfront units.

Whittall’s project calls for a 360-unit project with 180 condos and 180 hotel rooms in towers with heights to be determined.

Town officials, though, warn that Whittall’s residential units are an issue.

Whittall says he will do nothing that jeopardizes the property’s existing density. If he has to, Whittall says he’ll seek a nine- to 12-month referendum process to ask the voters to allow for residential-only condos.

On the other side of the ring sits Welfonder, principal of Longboat Key-based MW Development Group and his partner, Naples-based The Lutgert Cos. Welfonder has been seeking to redevelop the Colony for more than seven years.

The MW/Lutgert duo is proposing a $195 million project of 400 tourism units in a main midrise building near Gulf of Mexico Drive and in two- and three-story villa buildings that complies with all current Longboat Key building codes and won’t require a referendum.

Welfonder, though, has yet to present a hard-figure offer to unit owners for their units like Whittall, other than noting that past sales of units have fetched an average price of $50,000.

Welfonder said he and his development partner are prepared “to make a cash total buyout offer” to unit owners when the board meets again early 2016 at a date yet to be determined.

Matt Walsh’s inanities should not be allowed to stress the fact that “the percentage of Americans in the work force still hovers at historical low levels, a persistent pall throughout the Obama years” (the result of an aging retired population) without also mentioning that job creation during the Obama years has been 8 million, versus 1 million under Bush (most excess funds went to speculation) and 23 million under Clinton.

Clearly, he was more interested in catering to his bigotry than presenting real trends. I would nonetheless be the first to stress that correlation is no proof of causality, but facts are facts, and one would not be allowed to select them to fit his prejudices. I read thoroughly Matt Walsh’s editorial on the word for 2016. It seems Mr. Walsh is very wise to have chosen a key word for this year, it being an election year. However, I noted the last several years’ words chosen — “freedom,” “revelation” and “aspire” — also could fit into 2016, and in fact, should be coupled with the word for 2016, “wisdom.”

For years I have defined wisdom thus: the meeting of knowledge, experience and common sense at a singular point in time to solve or deal with an issue or problem, the most important of these three being common sense.

And that is what I believe is sadly lacking in our world of today — common sense.

Knowledge is available in abundance largely through the Internet, a tool I find very useful for researching issues.

Experience comes from doing repeatedly any job or task worth doing, of finding new and better ways to improve that job or task to make it more meaningful and valuable.

But this world is in very short supply of common sense,

and this dearth is not limited to us common folk. No, it seems to be the great failing of our leaders, that they lack the common sense of the Founding Fathers (and Mothers).

First, we need to reteach the true meaning of the word “freedom.” It does not mean I can do anything and everything I desire. Freedom comes with the responsibility to choose the action I am taking in the name of freedom, that that action is beneficial to my well-being, that of my family and/or community and nation.

Second, we do need a “revelation” of what freedom is and how our voice and vision can promote and ensure freedom, freedom from unnecessary government/state interference in our lives, hopes and dreams, yet allowing us to reach our fullest potential.

Third, we do need to “aspire” to greatness. This is what built the greatest freedom engine in the history of mankind, the United States of America. Over 250 years later, thousands still aspire to come to our shores seeking their dreams, hopes and freedoms to become more than their forbears.

There will be “winners,” and there will be “losers” in the arena of life, but that should never stop anyone from “aspiring” for better, for greater, for freedom to hope, dream and achieve.

Yes, I agree with the choice of the word for 2016 — “wisdom.”

I hope others read Mr. Walsh’s editorial in the Observer and “aspire” to “freedom” with “wisdom” in 2016 … and beyond. From a scholastic point, Mr. Walsh’s editorials should be required reading in all our schools.

John Adams, a devout Christian, agreed with his fellow Founding Fathers in the separation of church and state, and James Madison in 1819 said, “The civil government… functions with complete success…by the total separation of church and state.”

Newt Gingrich, former Republican speaker of the House and a 2012 presidential candidate once told Larry King on CNN that you have to realize that this is a Christian country that tolerates diversity.

In my opinion, he was so wrong. We are seeing right now in one of the leading Republican presidential candidates, as we’ve seen over history, how the toleration of diversity when religion and government are intertwined can be fleeting with terribly harmful consequences.

In my opinion, the United States of America is a SECULAR nation, and we are much stronger for it.

Concerned about the lack of primary health care on Longboat Key? Bob Simmons plans to bring a dose of medicine to the island in his role as chairman of the Longboat Key Foundation.

In June, the foundation launched a $1.6 million campaign for a new medical facility on the Key. Funds will pay for a building lease, the build-out of the facility and startup costs and two years’ operating costs for running the facility year-round.

“Having this center is a necessity to Longboat,” Simmons said. “We don’t have a primary care doctor on the island. It’s an underserved need.”

Proposed services at the center include family medicine, women’s health, behavioral health, an onsite lab and imaging and specialist services.

The statement of community need for the center reads: “We must restore and enhance the health care services available on Longboat Key to better serve residents and visitors, improve our self-sufficiency as a community and enable residents to remain on Longboat Key as they

age.”

Longboat Key has not had a family care physician since May 2014, when Dr. Pamela Letts, owner of the Centre Shops Family Practice and Urgent Care, retired.

The Longboat Key Foundation was established in late 2013 through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County to help donors address community needs. Since its inception, establishing a new medical center has been a top priority.

“We can’t say who or where, but we’ve chosen the site, and we’ve chosen the doctor,” Simmons said. “It’s a matter of formalizing both of them. We’ve really moved this plan along and are getting closer to our dream of opening a new medical center on Longboat Key.” Simmons hopes to open the medical center, called Longboat Key Center for Healthy Living, by the end of the first quarter of 2016, and it will be on or near the vicinity of Bay Isles Road and Bay Isles Parkway. The lease and the agreement with the doctor are being finalized.

Simmons, who moved to Longboat Key full time three years ago, has a background of working for various health care suppliers, which helps him plan for the medical center.

“We’re very excited, and we’re getting closer to making it happen,” Simmons said. “We’re inching toward the goal line.”

The food pantry is held every other week. At the first pantry, the Simmonses served 23 families. Now, the pantry has grown and regularly serves around 100 families. Between January and May 2015, the food pantry served 13,556 total pounds of food and 11,296 total meals.

“Things are going great,” Simmons said. “We just keep getting busier. The turnout is wonderful, and it’s really something to help these people.”

MICHAEL CROSBY Mote Marine Laboratory CEO and President Michael Crosby will continue Mote’s $50 million fundraising drive as part of its 2020 vision plan.

Michael Crosby, CEO and president of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, is excited to be nearing the completion of the largest fundraising campaign in the history of the organization.

That wasn’t necessarily a high bar to clear, because it was also Mote’s first comprehensive fundraising effort. Still, the research institution set an aggressive $50 million goal when it announced its Oceans of Opportunity campaign in early 2015. Already, it has raised more than $40 million, including eight gifts of $1 million or more.

For Crosby, the new year offers an opportunity to put that pot of money into action. Mote has adopted a series of goals for growth it hopes to achieve by 2020, and the Oceans of Opportunity campaign will help bring those goals to fruition.

“Twenty-sixteen is going to be a time when we’re going to renew and even strengthen our focus on the next generation,” Crosby said. “That’s really what the campaign is about — it’s about the future.”

Mote seeks to expand all arms of its operation, which includes five campuses across Florida.

In December, the organization received a $2 million donation toward a new facility in the Florida Keys that will focus on coral reef research and restoration.

Crosby is focused on making Mote’s research facilities a center for innovation in marine science, and hopes to capitalize on academic efforts to create practical products as well.

He highlights the 2015 Gulf Coast Innovation Challenge as representative of the type of work in which Mote can specialize. There, Mote scientists contributed to projects focused on sustainable fish farming, water filtration and advances in medicine.

“The support that comes in is absolutely vital if Mote is going to continue as an independent organization, so that we have the freedom to conduct extremely innovative and potentially transformative science,” Crosby said.

On a local level, that means hiring 10 additional Ph.D. scientists to work in its City Island facility. Mote hopes to nearly double its economic impact of $86.8 million in Florida, $70 million of which is concentrated in Sarasota County.

“A strong Mote means a strong community here in Southwest Florida,” Crosby said. “We’re

a very significant component of the overall economic engine already.”

Expanding research work at the City Island facility necessitates moving the aquarium to a new location, Crosby said. In 2013, Mote attempted to secure bayfront land near the Van Wezel for a new aquarium but was rebuffed by the city. At the time, Crosby said the organization would move swiftly to find a new location for the aquarium.

More than a year later, there’s still no update on where that new aquarium might be located. Mote has determined the Sarasota mainland is best for attracting visitors to the informal science education center. As the city works on developing a master plan for the bayfront land Mote sought, Crosby is no longer ruling out a bayfront aquarium as a possibility, although alter-

natives exist.

“There are also other options that we must look at, keeping in mind the goal is not for Mote to build its new science education and aquarium campus on a particular location,” Crosby said.

“It’s to select the one that will help us best achieve our goals and will best serve our community.”

Although speculation about an aquarium site often generates the most attention from the public, Crosby said each element of the organization’s 2020 vision carries its own significance.

“When you have a strategic plan, you have to stay focused and be very methodical,” Crosby said. “We can’t get sidetracked and go off on tangents. It’s like building a new house — you have to build it brick by brick by brick, lay a good, strong foundation.”

MARGUERITE COFFEY

Marguerite Coffey, 92, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key, died Dec. 15.

Born July 25, 1921, she graduated from the Barnard School for Girls and Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She met and soon became engaged to Lt. Richard Coffey, of the Army Air Corps. Their plans were waylaid when he was shot down over Germany and spent 18 months in the German Stalah Luft 3. After the war, they married, and she gave birth to three sons and raised a family in Scarsdale, N.Y., where she served as chauffeur nonpareil and as a dutiful ice hockey mom. In 1969, the Coffeys moved to Longboat Key, where they shared many happy years and were regulars at the Longboat Key Club and Café L’Europe.

Mrs. Coffey lived on Longboat Key until Mr. Coffey’s death in 1989. She then moved to Sarasota Bay Club, where she spent the rest of her life.

Mrs. Coffey is survived by her three sons, Bryan, Dennis and Patrick; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Dec. 22.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.

and her husband, Jay, lived in Great Neck, N.Y. She is remembered for her intelligence, wit and outsize generosity.

Mrs. Kramer was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, in 1996. She is survived by her son, Michael; daughter, Laura Lowell; and one grandson.

THEODORE TILTON

Theodore Lake Tilton Sr., 74, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 1.

Born Aug. 17, 1941, in DeKalb, Ill., he graduated from Rochelle Township High School. He held a Bachelor of Science from Cornell College and was a lifelong active member of Delta Phi Rho fraternity. He also obtained a master’s degree in mathematics from Northern Illinois University.

Mr. Tilton worked for many years as vice president of First National Bank of Rochelle, where he also sat on the board of directors.

Mr. Tilton is remembered as a positive, loving man who lived life to the fullest. He loved skiing, tennis, swimming and playing the guitar. His zest for exploring the world and love for biking led him to take several bike trips around the U.S. and Europe with his wife. Integrity, compassion, gratitude and kindness guided his life and led to his involvement in many charities, including Village of Progress, H.O.P.E. and Rotary International.

Mr. Tilton is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra; children, Alexandra Robson, Ted Tilton Jr. and Sarah McGee; four grandchildren; and brothers, Ronald and David Tilton.

The family will hold a private memorial service on Longboat Key.

Katz had big purpose despite small stature

Whether she was conducting the choir at Temple Beth Israel, volunteering at Jewish Family & Children’s Service, meeting with friends or running errands, Florence Weisblat Katz was never seen without heels.

“She loved dressing up,” Judy Vigder, Katz’s daughter, said. “As a little girl, she only had one pair of shoes for a short period of time, some boots. When she became an adult and could wear heels, she went crazy. She always got dressed up, putting on her little pearls and high heels, no matter where she went.”

Katz, 100, of Sarasota, died Dec. 26.

She wore size 6 1/2 narrow shoes and stood just 4 feet, 8 inches tall.

But the size of the crowd — nearly 300 — at her memorial service Dec. 30, at Temple Beth Israel, showed the big shoes she wore in the community.

“Our sanctuary was completely filled,” said Temple Beth Israel Rabbi Jonathan Katz (no relation).

“She is so woven into the fabric of our congregation’s life and history and always will be.”

Katz, a member of Temple Beth Israel since its establishment in 1979, was the temple’s first choir director, a position she held for 23 years.

“It was her charismatic personality that drew people to her and her choir, and they were very loyal to the choir for all the years she conducted it,” former Rabbi Michael Eisenstat said. “She’ll

“There is no such thing as being just an acquaintance of Florence Katz,” Karen Bokor, Katz’s granddaughter, said. “Everyone was her friend. She made everyone feel like they were important, and when she was with you oneon-one, you never doubted for a minute that she was completely focused on you. She touched everybody in a very special way.”

Along with her heels, Katz was seldom seen without a smile.

“Her ability to always see the bright side of everything was really something,” Helen Sherman, Katz’s friend of almost 20 years, said. “She was a very positive person and knew things were always going to be OK.” Katz was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and son, Nathan. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Robert Vigder; daughter-inlaw, Denise Katz; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

always leave that legacy at the temple.”

When Katz wasn’t making music, she was giving back. Until her last several months, she volunteered twice a week for the Senior Outreach Services (SOS) program at the Jewish Family & Children’s Services in Sarasota, which gives homebound senior citizens the chance to socialize with others on a weekly basis.

“Everything she did, she wanted to make it as nice as possible,” director of Senior Services Pam Baron said. “She just genuinely cared about what she was doing and had such a respect for helping others. She found a purpose and truly mattered.”

Born July 9, 1915, in the small town of Coshocton, Ohio, Katz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from Oberlin College in 1937 and a master’s degree in music from Ohio State University in 1939.

Katz developed a lifelong love for music on her sixth birthday, when her father bought her a violin.

“She was so talented that she would actually create pieces for our family to play together,” Vigder said. “My father would play the trumpet and saxophone, I played the piano, my brother played drums, and she would play the viola or violin. It was so much fun.”

In 2013, Katz was named Florida’s winner of the Salute to Senior Service, an honor Home Instead Inc. gives annually to seniors who have had a positive impact on their communities.

“She always told me that giving is better than receiving, and she told everyone who would thank her for her service, ‘Oh no, you’re serving me,’” Vigder said. “She felt that every day, she should help somebody, and helping others helped her.”

Through all of her involvements, Katz created bonds and friendships with those she met.
