A SHIFT IN PARKING

The “Protect and Serve” message on Longboat Key Police vehicles apparently extends to turtles. On Sept. 6, marine patrol Officer Joshua Connors found a turtle floating in a residential canal on the island and rescued it. To return the favor, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium named the loggerhead Connor and treated the animal for four months, releasing him Jan. 13 on a town beach. Connor has a satellite tracker on his back now, so Mote will be able to keep an eye on him.

The property’s 14.7 acres will cluster the residential units on the southern two-thirds with the hotel on the north side.

Leave it to a track club to move quickly. The Manasota Track Club has adopted a stretch of Gulf of Mexico Drive beginning where the Rotary Club of Longboat Key’s area ends, going south of the Chart House, over the New Pass Bridge and halfway to St. Armands Circle. And on Feb. 6, the members will participate in the first of the club’s quarterly cleanup projects along the highway.
