Walkway upgrades

The first pedestrian hybrid beacons are now up on Longboat Key. Two of the hybrid beacons are on the island, one at Bayfront Park over to the beach access and another near Country Club Shores. The pedestrian hybrid beacons are crosswalks with masts that extend over the roadway. Pedestrians press a button that causes the signals on the mast to flash yellow before turning red, telling cars to stop. Director of Public Works Isaac Brownman said as of April 1 the beacons were operational after crews worked out a few minor issues. Brownman also said there are talks of a small “celebration” in the works to commemorate the crosswalks.

Fun Fore Friars

The Friars golf group hosted its annual dinner, “Fun Fore Friars” on March 26 at the Harbourside Ballroom at the Longboat Key Club. “Friars” stands for Friday Afternoon Recreational Society. There were 168 guests in attendance. Elaine Dabney started planning the event in June. The event had a whimsical theme based on the movie, “Caddyshack.” For the event, Dabney built a replica of Rodney Dangerfield’s golf bag from the movie. Friar Frank Sulzman stepped down after leading the Friars for six years. Chuck Eldridge is taking over for Sulzman. “This is the biggest turnout we have ever had at this event,” said Sulzman. “We have grown a lot this year. We just enjoy playing together and getting to know everyone.” Honorees at the event included Sulzman and Matt Vito, who is the only founding member still playing with the Friars. The Flinter award was given to Harold Seegmiller for being the most outstanding Friar.
