Team clean

The Rotary Club of Longboat Key continues to help keep Gulf of Mexico Drive clean. Every quarter, the club walks a total of three miles on GMD and picks up trash as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. The most recent cleanup saw the removal of 40 pounds of trash, 10 golf balls and a dollar bill. Early in the club’s history, members wanted to find a way to get permanent signs on the state road. Through the AdoptA-Highway program, as long as the club made regular cleanup efforts, a sign would be posted on each side of the road. The cleanups are always a good time, says club Director Nancy Rozance. It’s a time of laughter and camaraderie. On Oct. 17, the club celebrated its ninth anniversary.

Challenge met

The OPL Putting Challenge was a big success. The town of Longboat Key and OPL Charities partnered in a putting tournament on Oct. 20 at Islandside Golf Course Putting Green. The challenge raised $25,000 for SRQ Vets. SRQ Vets is a veterans-led nonprofit organization with a focus on local veterans helping other local veterans. The organization is 100% volunteer-based, providing resources such as VA assistance, PTSD/traumatic brain injury assistance, job placement and education, health care, home modifications, auto repair and maintenance, help with homelessness and suicide prevention. Susan Phillips, assistant to the town manager, said it was a fun event and was proud of how much money was raised. The town, in partnership with the Longboat Key Foundation, is continuing the fundraising campaign for SRQ Vets to award them at the Longboat Key Veterans Day Observance on Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Karon Family Pavilion. To donate, send a check to the Longboat Key Foundation, P.O. Box 8297, or visit LBKFoundation.org.
