A gem of a snowbird Ruby-throated hummingbirds are nature’s snowbirds, wintering in Central America and summering in the Eastern United States. Along the way, many play it safe and fly around the Gulf of Mexico shore along the Texas coast, but at least one brave (or perhaps misguided) bird found its way to Longboat Key during the recent migration season. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, rubythroated hummingbirds beat their wings 53 times per second. They can travel 30-60 mph without stopping for traffic or a restroom, a speed and stamina that can propel the tiny birds 500 miles over the Gulf. HummingBirdCentral.com tracks sightings and migration routes. The map of sightings shows a ruby-throated hummingbird was spotted near St. Judes Drive North.

Honoring the Queen Like cities and towns around the country, Longboat Key lowered flags to half-staff last week in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. In keeping with protocol, the town will keep its flags in the honorary position until sunset on the day of the queen’s interment, which is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19. Across Sarasota, flags were likewise lowered to half-staff.
