Former Longboat Key Police Lieutenant Chris Skinner served food to public safety personnel out of his new food truck, Native Fish & Grill last week. “It was a good experience for me because it was our first time actually working out of the truck,” he said of the initial steps of bringing a 15-year dream to fruition. The orders of his former colleagues gave him the opportunity to get a better feel for popular menu items and feedback before his next outing. Serving his former colleagues was a way that Skinner felt that he could give back after 11 years serving the town himself. He retired from the town in September 2021.

‘Oy, what a woman’ July 31 was Mimi Horwitz Appreciation Sunday at the Longboat Island Chapel, and the congregation cheered, “Oy, what a woman!” The crowd laughed and celebrated Horwitz’s 16-year tenure as Pastoral Care Assistant with prosecco and cake. Extra champagne flutes were pulled from the kitchen when 50 weren’t enough to serve everyone who came to toast Horwitz. She was given a basket filled with thank you cards and letters. Former Chapel Reverend Bill Friederich called her a “mensch,” Yiddish for “good person.” “She’s someone we all want to be like,” he said.
