Trading shells for smiles The Beach Harbor Club became a more colorful place to live when Joan Gill moved in five years ago. Gill was inspired by the Kindness Rocks movement when she found some painted rocks on a beach in California. “I thought I could do that with shells,” she said. So Gill began collecting, painting and scattering large quahog and cockle shells around her condominium complex to make her neighbors smile. They can be found on window sills, in garden beds and along pathways. Gill doesn’t keep track but estimates she’s left more than 100. “I like to see people’s reactions,” she said. “It’s fun; it keeps me occupied.”

Let’s get ready to march Mark your calendar for 9 a.m. July 4 on Bay Isles Road. Freedom Fest, featuring one of the most-spirited parades in the country, especially if measured by distance, will step off for its annual march. Town commissioners on Monday waived (as they almost always have) the $100 fee for a public event. Canceled in 2020 over COVID-19 and brought back in 2021, the 2022 version will include all the usual trappings, such as fire trucks, police cars, dignitaries in convertibles, dogs in costumes and more. Stay tuned for word on the event’s grand marshal, which should be announced soon.
