Kitty Michael tees it up on Islandside It was almost time to get their game faces on, but golfers from Panama, Puerto Rico, Florida and other locales hit the practice green to put the final touches on their putting and chipping skills. The Kitty Michael International Invitational got to a swinging start on May 3 as more than 100 women set out for a practice round. The eight golfers from Curacao got ready to head out for the practice round of the tournament, adjusting bags and straightening the flags on their carts. “Curacao hasn’t participated in this tournament since 1999,” golfer Angelique Schoop said. “We’re back after 22 years.” Teams will play 54 holes on the Longboat Key Club’s Islandside Golf Course, enjoying one round a day until May 6. The tournament started in 1979 as a way for founder Kitty Michael to invite friends from different clubs and countries to play together in Puerto Rico. Now it’s on its 42nd installment and brings golfers from Central America, the Caribbean and North America.

Though turtles already have started showing up on the south end of Longboat Key, the mamas on the Manatee County side took their time. Turtle nesting season started May 1, and the first Manatee County nest of 2022 on Longboat Key was found during turtle patrols May 3. Mike Herron, a longtime Longboat Key Turtle Watch member, traced the tracks to a nest and marked it with the yellow-painted stakes that will soon become commonplace throughout the area. The first nest of 2022 in Sarasota County was found April 25.
