“I love coming out,” Klotz said. “It gives me a great deal of satisfaction, and all my dear friends are right here with me.”

This is Klotz’s first year ringing the bell with the church, but she used to participate in the event at another church for a couple years before that — meaning she only picked up bellringing after she turned 100 years old.

Accolades for Jordan Longboat Key’s own Michael Jordan has done it again, nabbing yet another accolade.

Our MJ is talented on a page rather than on a court, and he recently won another Royal Palm Literary Award, this time a Gold Award for his unpublished thriller, “A Desperate Race.”

The award was announced at the virtual Florida Writers Association Conference, and Jordan topped the list of 549 submissions.

Jordan previously won a Silver Royal Palm Literary Award for his debut novel, “The Company of Demons.”

He said he will continue to work on his “A Desperate Race” manuscript and hopes to publish it.

Chiles Group moves forward with historic cottage purchase

The owners of Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant are moving forward with the purchase of a historic cottage from the Longboat Key Historical Society.

The Chiles Group plans to move the L-shaped cottage down the street from where it sits on Broadway Street to 6920 Gulf of Mexico Drive just north of Whitney Plaza.

“We’ve been part of the community there since 1989, and we kind of liked the idea about helping to maintain the historical aspect and sustainability of the community,” Chiles Group CEO Chuck Wolfe said.

Before the cottage can move, the Chiles Group needs to become the official owner and then would need to receive several approvals from the town’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department. It includes a temporary-use permit for the temporary relocation of the structure, a moving permit and a site development plan

amendment for consideration by the Planning and Zoning Board.

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons said the site plan amendment would need to contain the landscape plan, civil engineering plan and other details. The board could consider the proposal as soon as January.

Parsons said the temporary permit would allow the Chiles Group to temporarily move the cottage from where it sits until a decision is made by the P&Z Board. Temporary-use permits are generally approved for six months with the opportunity for extensions, according to Parsons.

The Chiles Group planned to build a 98-spot parking lot and 300-square-foot office on the land near Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive. If the P&Z Board approves the amendment, the historic cottage would replace the 300-square-foot building.

“It would be our hope that this building would become the focal point of that property,” Wolfe said.

It’s unclear what kind of impact the cottage would have on the parking.

“We haven’t received any sitespecific details yet, so we don’t know how the parking may be impacted by the larger structure,” Parsons wrote in an email. “My

The cottage is one of two at 521 Broadway St. Historical Society President Michael Drake was tasked with moving the cottages because the landowner is looking to sell the property.

Wolfe said the Historical Society must move the smaller cottage before the Chiles Group can move the larger one.

“Maintaining that kind of Florida history, maintaining a sense of old Florida has been a part of Ed [Chiles’] ethos since he first started,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe said he hopes to move the larger cottage in 2021.

“That’s kind of an extensive process unto itself, getting the approvals,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe estimated the total cost to be between $50,000 and $100,000 to buy, move and set up the larger cottage.

Earlier in November, JB Holding Co. owner James Brearley submitted a $45,000 bid to purchase the larger L-shaped cottage. However, Brearly and a friend did not feel comfortable with the amount of road noise coming from Gulf of Mexico Drive on their preferred lot in Longbeach Village and backed away, but agreed to make up the difference between the next-largest bid. That was the Chiles Group’s bid, at $31,000.

“When we got the call from Michael Drake, that we were the second-place bidder and that it was still available, we were like, ‘OK, great. This is going to work out after all,’” Wolfe said.

T

he golf courses at Longboat Key Club have remained open and have provided some sense of normalcy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Golf Director Terry O’Hara said he’s seen an increased demand with the winter season approaching and snowbirds beginning their months-long stay on the island.

“With all the new members we’ve had, a lot of people coming back, a lot of people never left, it just was like, ‘I gotta do something,’ ” O’Hara said.

Golfers who didn’t live in the same household had been required to ride solo in a golf cart, putting a crimp in the supply of the vehicles as rounds increased, often sending out four carts with a foursome instead of two.

O’Hara and club Managing Director Rick Konsavage decided to install see-through plastic dividers on 110 of the Key Club’s golf carts to make sure golfers are adhering to social distancing guidelines. If the Key Club needs more dividers, O’Hara said he would order more.

Because many of the Key Club members have their own golf carts, O’Hara said he didn’t have to worry about installing the barriers earlier this summer or fall.

He’s slowly seen an increase in the demand for carts as more people want to golf.

“We were still running out of carts, and we had a lot of frustrated members because they would come over here, and they couldn’t get a golf cart, so we had to come up with something because we’re not even in season yet, and we had a problem,” O’Hara said.

O’Hara ordered the dividers from Illinois-based Wittek Golf Supply.

He said the order cost between $7,000 and $10,000.

“It’s not really a thing about making money,” O’Hara said.

“It’s a cost of keeping people safe.

That’s all it really comes down to.”

Last week, O’Hara and Key Club employees installed most of the dividers.

Not all of the club’s golf carts will have the dividers with a total of 115 golf carts available on the Harbourside course and 85 on the Links course.

The Key Club tried the dividers for the first time two weekends ago, installing 10 dividers to carts.

O’Hara was pleased to receive positive feedback.

“Hey Terry, thank you for your courtesy earlier today and providing Rodney and I with a plastic separation shield between the seats of our golf riding cart,” the Key Club golfer wrote in a review.

“It served effectively as another arrow in the club hygiene protocol, and I must say gave both of us comfort that our safety is on your mind.”

Many country clubs and golf courses throughout the country

have installed similar dividers on their carts to limit people’s physical contact. In Michigan, where an order reopening golf courses last spring specifically banned carts, some courses installed the barriers as a means of getting around the rules.

The Key Club is set to get a new fleet of golf carts on Dec. 15. O’Hara said it would take Key Club workers about a day to take the plastic dividers from the old fleet to install them on the new one.

The decision for the Key Club to install the dividers comes after town of Longboat Key staff received “several complaints

from residents about the lack of precautions at the Key Club properties,” according to Town Manager Tom Harmer.

“I did follow up earlier today with Rick Konsavage, the Managing Director of the Key Club to discuss some of the concerns,” Harmer wrote in a Nov. 20 email to town commissioners. “He said he is aware of the town’s mask ordinance and social distancing requirements. He said he has the mandatory mask notice posted at all club facilities.”

Ahead of season, Konsavage wrote a Nov. 20 newsletter about the importance of COVID-19 precautions to ensure safety among members and staff.

“Physical distancing, wearing a mask, washing your hands are still a mandatory practice,” Konsavage wrote. “We do not want to let our guard down for any reason.

Our island has not experienced any serious cases in over three months, and we would all like to keep it that way!”

Town commissioners have expressed their concerns as more people arrive on the island with season getting underway.

The Florida Department of Health’s COVID-19 data uses a person’s permanent address. It means someone who has a permanent address outside of Florida wouldn’t be reflected in the state’s data.

As of Monday morning, the state data shows Longboat Key’s 34228 ZIP code has fewer than five positive cases of COVID-19 on the Sarasota County side of the island and 80 on the Manatee County side.

hat was once the most expensive real estate listing in the area has become the most expensive residential property sale ever in the region.

Longboat Key’s Serenissima estate – “most serene” in Italian – sold recently for $16.5 million, eclipsing the previous record selling price by a dollar less than $3.5 million. A home on the northern end of Longboat Key in July sold for $13 million + $1, breaking the previous record by $1.

Michael Molton of Michael Saunders & Co. handled the sale, which closed Monday, for owners Michele and Mike McKee and was the property’s only listing agent.

The buyers were not disclosed, and the sale has not yet been recorded on public documents.

Situated on 1.18 acres in Regent Court, Serenissima made waves in March 2017 when it went on the market for $26.5 million, higher than any previous residential property in Sarasota, Manatee or Charlotte counties. The most recent price was $19.75 million.

The McKees purchased the property in 1998 for $2.15 million, and the home was built in 2005.

Two doors to the south, Villa del Sogno (825 Longboat Club Road) sold this month for $10.5 million.

That home had once been listed for $20 million in 2016 and had been most recently on the market at an asking price of $12 million.

According to a November report of the Gulf Coast luxury market, there have been 89 sales of single-family homes over $3 million across the Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte counties this year.

Moulton represented the sellers throughout the entire time the property was listed.

“That alone speaks to the caliber of service Michael offers to his customers,” said Michael Saunders, founder and CEO of Michael Saunders & Co.

Harry’s expansion plans move forward The Planning and Zoning Board approved a special exception for Harry’s Continental Kitchens.

Harry’s Continental Kitchens has continued with plans to expand its dining area and increase the number of parking spaces at its establishment.

Longboat Key’s Planning and Zoning Board voted 6-0 on Nov. 17 in favor of a special exception submitted by Harry’s owner Harry Christensen and agent Robert Rokop.

“This action by the Planning and Zoning Board is considered final,” P&Z Chair David Green said. “This is not a recommended action. It does not go to the town commission for further action.”

The exception allows for the expanded use of Harry’s restaurant and outdoor dining in the existing structure at 535 St. Judes Drive. Harry’s plans to remove the yellow structure next door at 547 St. Judes Drive to allow for additional parking in keeping with the town’s new parking standards that require one parking space for every 150 feet of indoor and outdoor space.

The homes are in a commercially zoned area, currently used for storage, and were built in 1946. Christensen and his wife, Lynn, established Harry’s in 1979.

Harry’s uses the yellow house’s lot at 547 St. Judes Drive for staff parking, but customers are not supposed to park there. During the season, there are times customers have no choice.

“You can see kind of the existing overflow parking that occurs

at this property presently to serve Harry’s when season is in and a lot of traffic and folks are wanting to dine in this location,” Town Planner Tate Taylor said.

After the proposed redevelopment, the lot would include an additional 12 parking spaces and two handicapped spaces.

Christensen spoke before the P&Z Board about why he’s planning to expand Harry’s.

“The whole reason for doing this expansion is basically

because of the COVID that happened [in] March,” Christensen said. “We’ve been shut down and locked down and 25% capacity and 50% capacity.

“And, I’ve started this process back in May to try to get my seating that we’ve lost so I can keep my employees and have the people that have been working for me and their families capable of surviving.”

Christensen said he wasn’t sure how long the COVID-19 pan-

demic would last, and how long his establishment would need to accommodate social distancing.

Rokop, who is an agent representing Christensen and his special exception application, claimed the plans would also improve stormwater management on St. Judes Drive, which is often problematic.

“This is an issue I always pay particular attention to on every project,” Rokop said. “Our intent is not to contribute additional stormwater to the street, but rather contain it on-site.”

P&Z Board Vice Chair Phill Younger explained why he is in favor of Christensen’s proposal.

“I think that it’s certainly trying times for all business and particularly restaurants, and I think it’s commendable that he is trying to improve the facility and provide Longboat Key with a greater dining option, and do so within compliance with our codes,” Younger said.

Before Longboat Key’s new parking rules took effect in June, the town previously required one parking space for every four seats.

On Oct. 15, Harry’s received approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment for a variance to reduce the required distance of the proposed parking area surface to the street from 20 feet to 6 feet.

Harry’s next step is to submit a site development plan for the P&Z Board to review. It could happen as soon as Dec. 15, which is when the board is scheduled to meet next. The plan will not go before the town commission.

lori Roberts was always ahead of her time.

The Sarasota philanthropist wore many hats throughout her life and wore them well. She was a successful businesswoman in a time when women were rarely prominent in industry. She was one of the grande dames of Sarasota’s philanthropic community — a grandiose performer who loved the limelight. She was a loving parent, doting grandmother and, for many, a good friend.

After decades of pioneering and making the most of life, Roberts died on Monday, Nov. 23. She was 91.

Roberts was larger than life, though she was small in stature.

The cosmetics industry icon who established an enduring makeup company producing a high-quality line of products for women of color had a lasting legacy well before she moved to Longboat Key in 2003.

“Up to then, there was nothing that wasn’t patronizing,” her son, Bruce Roberts said. “Her vision of the line was it would make no compromises in quality or sophistication while still being very much proudly targeted to Black women.”

She was committed to her company even as she raised her two children, Doug Roberts and Bruce Roberts, with her husband Dr. Craig Roberts in Deal, N.J. Though she was more the type to be traveling for work than organizing the school bake sale, Doug Roberts said her professional and personal life never clashed.

She was always home for dinner and spent the weekends with her family, and they were a tight-knit group as a result.

She and her husband sold Flori Roberts Inc. in 1993.

“She mentored a lot of women, particularly Black women, and it seems like she continued that even after she retired as well and was an icon for a lot of people,” Doug Roberts said.

Molly Schechter, a colleague in the fundraising scene, admired her hard-earned fortunes and business acumen as being hard to come by for women — especially in the era in which she grew up.

“She had not one, but multiple successful businesses,” Schechter said. “She thought like a businesswoman, acted like a businesswoman and approached philanthropy like a businesswoman. That was very unusual in this community.”

Her need to help underserved communities carried over to Sarasota, where she threw herself into the work supporting nonprofits.

Some local figures donate widely, but Roberts preferred to focus her generosity on a handful of groups, particularly those in the arts and in the human services field helping minority groups. In her time she was closely involved with the YMCA Foundation of Sarasota, Asolo Repertory Theatre, the American Jewish Committee and others.

Brian Lipton, director of AJC West Coast Florida, first knew of Roberts from her makeup and cosmetic items — his mother always wore the Roberts dark shade of lipstick. He grew close to her during her time as an AJC board member. In time, he considered her a mentor.

“For a little person she packed a huge package of style, energy and personality,” Lipton said. “... She had so many life lessons — not gossiping, always look your best, always have a smile for people.

She was known to make a fashion statement when attending the various fundraisers and functions across Sarasota — Lipton said she had a new wardrobe for every season that, when combined with her sparkling blue eyes, lit up a room.

Her performer’s spirit paired well with the philanthropic scene’s grandiose atmosphere.

Well before she was a staple in the business world, Roberts, a native of Brooklyn, was an enthusiastic stage actress after studying drama at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. One of her fond Broadway memories was performing in the popular “Lend an Ear” revue as Carol Channing’s understudy. When Channing stepped out of the role, it was Roberts who took over on stage.

It was no surprise when she soon became involved with supporting Asolo Repertory Theatre upon her arrival in Sarasota.

Something her children admire most about Roberts is how she never really stopped growing.

From launching a makeup business for women of color in the ’60s to keeping on top of developing technologies and social media, she always wanted to see what was ahead.

Life was good, and she wanted to make the most of it.

“She was human, but she would just keep moving forward, and I think that’s what she really would want for us as well,” Bruce said. “... She didn’t look necessarily at her death as an end but just as another step in moving forward.”

Roberts is survived by her children Doug Roberts and Bruce Roberts, and her grandchildren Elizabeth, Alex, Jenna, Daniella and Cecilia. A celebration of her life is planned for the future.

Florida bounces back Despite the struggles in hospitality, Florida indeed has seen a V-shaped recovery. But questions remain about early 2021.

ack in August, we doubted Florida would experience a “V”-shaped economic recovery, given the crash in the state’s hospitality and retail sectors.

But based on the most recent data from the Florida Office of Economic & Demographic Research, and the picture of what has occurred, you can say Florida indeed has experienced a “V”-shaped recovery over the past six months, with the exception, as predicted, in the hospitality sector.

Florida lost a stunning 1,178,100 jobs from February to April, sending Florida’s unemployment rate to 13.8% in April, well above the 10% that persisted during the 2008 recession.

But since then, the state has regained more than half of those jobs — a remarkable 699,700 in six months. The unemployment rate has dropped by almost half, to 6.4% as of the end of October.

Nationwide, Florida’s unemployment rate ranks the state in the second tier — at 32nd. All things considered, that’s not all that bad, especially knowing that when the U.S. economy crashes, Florida crashes harder than most states because of its reliance on tourism. Certainly, it could be worse: The worst unemployment rates in the nation: Hawaii, 14.3%; Nevada, 12%; New York, 9.6%; Louisiana, 9.4%; California, 9.3%.

The lowest unemployment rates: Nebraska, 3%; Vermont, 3.2%; Iowa, 3.6%; South Dakota, 3.6%; Utah, 4.1%.

Ever since hitting bottom in the spring, Florida’s economy has been recovering at a steady pace. That trend continued this fall. From September through October, Florida added another 61,100 jobs.

The largest increase in those recovered jobs came in Florida’s important leisure and hospitality sector: 29,600.

But that sector is still decimated vis-à-vis most others.

Compared to a year ago, hospitality employment is down 16%, roughly 200,000 jobs. No other sector comes close.

With Florida’s struggling restaurant and hotel industries still the most visible signs of the pandemic’s effects, it’s difficult to celebrate Florida’s recovery.

Nonetheless, the state’s economy is proving its resiliency when you look at October tax collections. They’re another indicator of the “V” recovery.

The state’s overall tax collections in October matched those of October 2019 — totally unexpected. What’s more, for the three months of August, September and October, state tax collections beat the state’s revised pandemic forecasts by $719.6 million.

According to the Office of Economic & Demographic Research’s October report: Nearly 92% of the gain in state revenues came from sales tax collections. “After plunging

The economic story for the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metro area pretty much mirrors that of the state.

The local region has made a remarkable recovery in employment since the spring — dropping unemployment from 14% to 5% and bringing back

As is the case for the state, the unknown is what will happen in the first quarter of 2021.

We know the Canadian snowbirds won’t be back, but what about our U.S. snowbirds who are so important to the region’s economy?

Other tax categories worth noting that beat October 2019: n Documentary Stamp Tax, which is collected on real estate transactions, increased 32% above October 2019, a gain of $27 million for the month and evidence of the state’s robust residential real estate market. n Beverage Taxes — up 39.6%, or $6 million, an indicator of more drinking by quarantined consumers. n Insurance Taxes — up 19.8%, or $3.3 million, an indicator of insurance underwriters passing

along double-digit percentage rate increases to recoup losses from 2019 weather catastrophes.

And reinforcing the struggles in tourism, tax receipts from restaurants and hotels declined 17.6% in October compared to the same month a year ago.

Altogether, you could say the past three months have generated a lot of positive signs. Given the crash in the state’s economy, it’s remarkable that year-to-date tax collections for the first four

months of the fiscal year are down only 2.7% compared to the same period a year ago.

Unfortunately, tempering optimism going into the high tourist season of 2021 are two factors: 1) How the recent spike in the pandemic will affect the economy; and 2) How long the recession in tourism will persist.

For now, look on the bright side. Florida has made a huge comeback from the disastrous spring.

On Nov. 11, Hurricane Eta flooded many homes on Longboat Key. I learned recently that all the baseboards must be removed immediately and if the wood underneath is wet, then it seeps into the drywall - which then develops mold.

In many cases, the walls will begin getting black 5-10 months later with an incredibly dangerous and highly toxic form of mold.

This is the kind of mold that destroys lungs and can ultimately kill.

I live on Fox Street, which had some of the worst flooding, and am meeting neighbors walking around the village who are still unaware of the problem. When I ask about their flooding, they say “Ours wasn’t so bad. We only got about 2 or 3 inches and we just have to paint the baseboards.”

In other words, they have no idea of the very high likelihood that behind the baseboard are 2x4’s that got plenty wet, in which case any drywall touching those boards are also wet and that water is now traveling upwards and create highly toxic mold.

If water flooded your house, you must remove the baseboards and look for moisture.

Nashville musician returns to Sarasota HARRY SAYER

ohn Salaway has picked up plenty of musical knowledge in his time.

The 43-year-old multiinstrumentalist musician has called Nashville his home for 17 years, and in that time has found a comfortable spot performing at BB King’s Blues Club and a number of other venues.

But he cut his teeth in Southwest Florida. Salaway is returning to Sarasota to perform Americana music at Blue Rooster on Dec. 10.

“I love coming back (to Florida) and seeing old friends,” he said. “I feel like I need to be by the water as often as possible.”

Salaway grew up in Englewood with a father who played drums.

His first love was also the drums — he discovered the craft during a lazy summer when he was 10, reigniting his father’s passion for drumming. His father taught him everything

John Salaway is drawing on his love of The Beatles for his new psychedelic-inspired Americana album being released next year.

he knew, and Salaway said he caught on quickly. There was a therapeutic element to drumming he liked, a kind of peace that he found while playing that stayed with him when the music ceased.

“(Drumming) is really the driving force of all music,” Salaway said. “It all started out with tribes using drums in Africa, centuries and centuries ago … it’s the root of all music, it’s the most important instrument.”

He was playing in a jazz band with other students in his high school in Englewood by 15. The group — called Mystic Blues — played in Englewood, Sarasota and Boca Grande, but Salaway liked the idea of creating music all his own.

Solo shows can be a tricky business, especially for multiinstrumentalists, but Salaway has a process for his performance he started early where he loops musical tracks together. He’ll record music live on stage and then play on top of

that to create a larger, fuller sound. He’ll be on stage alone but thinks audiences will hear much more than what they’re accustomed to.

“That’s kind of my thing that I do when I’m not producing or playing drums,” he said. “...

When I’m solo I do the oneman-band show with all those effects.”

He’s spent much of this year recording new music in his studio with his next album planned for the spring. The album — which will incorporate psychedelic 1960s-type sounds into his typical Americana style — will feature guest musicians from the Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and more.

As he’s continued further into his career, he’s found it less stressful and more enjoyable.

“It’s all about the heart that I put into it,” Salaway said.

“As long as I’m coming from that place and really wanting to put out something beautiful and heartfelt then it all feels so great.”

Sarasota’s Nik Wallenda, who of late has thrilled millions with his televised high-wire walks, will join four other circus veterans on the St. Armands Circle landmark.

The induction ceremony, normally a staple event of the new year, will be postponed because of COVID-19 concerns.

“With this class of inductees, The Circus Ring of Fame Foundation embarks on a global quest to honor the best of the best. It is our goal to grow the stature of this award and make Sarasota a premier destination for the worldwide circus community to gather on an annual basis,” said Bill Powell, foundation chair.

The other inductees, culled this fall from a list of 14 nominees, are: ■ Tina Winn: Performing as Galaxy Girl, the seventh generation performer began her circus training as a child with her family and has performed for decades.

■ George Carden: A Missouribased circus producer who has raised millions of dollars for charitable causes through his circus and sponsoring organizations.

■ Willie Edelston: He signed with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as a trapeze artist and performed extensively

Ruth and David’s son, Buck, followed his mother’s footsteps. After earning his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University, he became a professor of English and taught at a college in Vermont.

Ruth Dearing Beliles, born March 11, 1929, in Urbana, Ill., passed away peacefully on Nov. 24, 2020.

Ruth was valedictorian of her Urbana High School class. She won a full scholastic scholarship to the University of Illinois.

There, she joined and has been a lifelong member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Graduating in 1951, Ruth found employment on her hometown daily newspaper, The Urbana Courier, as assistant society editor.

That is where she met and eventually married her husband of 67 years, David A. Beliles, who, at the time was working in the Courier’s circulation department. The family joke is that Ruth took David “out of circulation.”

Shortly after marriage, she moved with her husband over the next 30 years to Independence, Mo., York, Neb., Arkansas City, Kan., Hannibal, Mo., and Grand Island, Neb., where David served as editor and publisher of the local newspapers.

After Ruth’s two children entered high school, she renewed her teaching certificate and taught English to college-bound seniors. She earned her master’s degree and completed graduate work at Wichita State University. While she lived in Grand Island, she was an adjunct professor at Kearney State College (now University of Nebraska at Kearney) and taught freshman English for nine years.

Ruth and David’s daughter, Lisa, lives on Longboat Key and followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming the third generation in the newspaper business. She met her husband, Matt Walsh, while in journalism school at the University of Missouri. In 1995, Matt & Lisa Walsh along with David and Ruth acquired the Longboat Observer.

For many years after that, Ruth served as a copy editor and proofreader of the Longboat Observer without pay. She frequently instructed staff members about proper usage of the comma. They framed a big comma and presented it to her, naming her the “Comma Queen.”

Ruth and David have lived at Plymouth Harbor since 2010.

Ruth is survived by her husband, David; daughter Lisa (Matt); son Buck; and has four grandchildren — Emily Walsh, a fourth-generation newspaper publisher; Kate Honea, principal dancer and assistant ballet mistress with the Sarasota Ballet; Brian Walsh, a major with the U.S. Marine Corps in Virginia; Jessica Beliles, a graduate of Smith College and an editor and dance instructor. Ruth has three great-grandchildren — Rhys Parry, 10; Maeve Walsh, 3; and Jackson Walsh, 4 months.

Ruth was a member of All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church on Longboat Key for 25 years.

SERVICE: A small family service will be held in late January 2021 at All Angels Church.

Religious leaders host Thanksgiving service Longboat’s faiths came together to share the message that the act of thanksgiving isn’t impossible, even in 2020.

he church was nearly halfempty, but spirits were full as Longboat Key’s communities of faith gathered for their annual Interfaith Thanksgiving service Nov. 24 at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church.

The tradition continued, as most things in 2020, with a mix of in-person and online attendees. Even so, Longboat’s leaders of faith brought a harmonized message of giving thanks.

Rev. Ken Blyth of St. Armands Key Lutheran Church (SAKLC) welcomed all those in attendance, virtual and in-person, Rabbi Stephen Sniderman from Temple Beth Israel started the service with Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation to make Thanksgiving a holiday, followed by a prayer from the Rev. David Marshall from All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church.

give thanks,’’ he said. “You don’t need to rehearse all the different ways this pandemic has disrupted our normal lives … but we’re reminded that thanksgiving, even in these difficult times,

is not impossible.”

Patricia Berns, who attends Church of the Redeemer Episcopal, attended the interfaith service for the first time.

“It was very diverse and yet still connected in terms of the bottom-line message,” she said. “I enjoyed the way they put America, religion and the pandemic all together in a way that makes it feel like someone understands how tough this all is. It was very easy to walk away feeling better.”

Differences brought on by the pandemic were palpable. The church was mostly empty with about 55 in-person attendees, something clergy and worshippers are accustomed to by now, and there was no buffet and fellowship after the service. Blyth said that was his favorite part of

the evening and missed it terribly.

“I went away with such a feeling of gratitude,” Longboat Island Chapel member Carol Peschel said. “Even through all the pandemic, there’s so much to be thankful for.”

For Peschel, it was important for her to be in person for the service. She had also been looking forward to hearing Rev. Brock Patterson, the chapel’s new lead pastor. Patterson and Father Robert Dziedziak of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church were both newcomers to the service for 2020.

Typically, the newest member of the group gives the sermon, but since Patterson has been in town a couple weeks, Pritchard gave it.

“It’s an important service,” David Calahan said. “I’m glad they continued to have it.”

The musical portion of the service, led by Temple Beth Israel’s music director Ann Stephenson-Moe and SAKLC’s director of music Michael Bodnyk, got high marks from attendees. The consensus was that it was one of the best years for the music.

“They were really just exceptional,” Marlene Wilkening said.

Eight singers made up the choir, and all kept their masks on as they sang.

Several had a mask made of thick fabric that protruded from their face (creating a sort of duck billed look) that allowed them to sing without worrying about breathing the mask in and kept the audience safer.

ot even a pandemic would keep Santa Claus, his elves and a pair of stray southern reindeer away at Christmastime, so at the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce’s second annual tree lighting on Nov. 28, all were present and spreading cheer.

“I was not going to go a year, no matter how bad this year has been, without lighting the tree,” Chamber President Gail Loefgren said.

New residents Dahlia and Robby Reid attended for the first time.

They like going to these types of ceremonies to kick off the season, Robby said.

“It just shows how hungry we are for connection,” Loefgren said. “We got a pretty decent crowd for doing nothing. All we were doing was lighting the tree.”

Indeed, there was nothing extra to do besides wait for the lights to come on — no food trucks or local club activities or even sitting on Santa’s lap, like there was at last year’s inaugural event — but the attendees milling around enjoyed the fresh air and the physically distanced camaraderie.

“It felt like there was a good hum around here today,” Rotary Club of Longboat Key President Brad Marner said. “People were talking a lot.”

At 6:30 p.m., Loefgren called for everyone’s attention prior to the lighting of the tree. A cluster of oak trees was wrapped in blue and white lights, courtesy of the hard work of Mark Meador from Casa Del Mar and Danielle Beatt from Grant’s Gardens.

This year, the lights climbed 15 feet higher up the trees than last year.

“Our goal is to someday get to the very top of all the oak trees,” Loefgren said. “That will be a spectacular evening.”

Mayor Ken Schneier was given the honor of lighting the tree.

“I hope that this park and our new Town Center can signify what binds us as a community, a year from now, when Phase Two of the center is complete … God willing, the virus is a memory,” Schneier said.

“We’ll look back on 2020 is the year our community came together as one.”

Temple collects items for lonely seniors F

or a donation drive that turned out to be part-charity event, partsocial event, a group of Temple Beth Israel members gathered Nov. 29 to collect items for lonely seniors served by Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS).

A small group formed by the temple’s membership and social action committees gathered in the parking lot just south of the building.

Two hours into the three-hour drop-off window, the group had collected 16 bags, putting them close to their goal.

The gift items included pens, pads of paper, candy and fun fuzzy socks.

SPARCC golfers swing for support

arasota’s Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) hosted its annual golf tournament at the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Golf Course on Nov. 16, drawing more than 100 participants and supporters.

Instead of a buffet lunch, golfers grabbed boxed lunches and ate in their carts before hitting the course.

“As you can imagine, it’s been a difficult year for fundraising, so we thank you all for your generosity,” auxiliary president Sandy Keir said.

Church gets into the spirit of Christmas

A

gang of merry masked elves worked in and around St. Armands Key Lutheran Church on Nov. 21, putting pumpkins to rest and filling every corner with Christmas cheer.

The church held its annual decorating day as members unloaded boxes, untangled lights and hung garland with care.

About 20 people took part.

Typically, the church doesn’t decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving, but in 2020, you need all the cheer you can get.

“We do it every year, but this year we did it earlier because people need to be cheered up,” Amy Blyth said. “Why not enjoy it for longer?”

Scarecrows and pumpkins were summarily stowed in corners as angels and poinsettias were pulled out of boxes.

There was much discussion about which ornaments to hang on which tree, and of the placement of angel ornaments on the church’s entryway tree.

As everyone worked, Christmas music played faintly over the church’s speakers, thanks to an iPad placed near the choir’s microphones.

ith stunning turquoise eyes, dark orange throat patches and a downturned hook at the end of their bills, double-crested cormorants are the most widespread cormorant in North America. Named for the two small tufts (or crests) of feathers on either side of their heads (most clearly seen in mating season), you might spot them swimming, with only their head and neck above water, foraging for fish in freshwater and saltwater.
