And so do butterflies, bees, hippies, hula dancers, Barbie dolls, cowboys and all the rest who dressed up for the Longboat Key Club’s Tennis Gardens’ annual Halloween round robin Oct. 29.

Players came dressed in full costumes, often in themes with their doubles partners or quartets. After making the rounds with friends and figuring out who was who under each mask and makeup, the group played several rounds of tennis to find the day’s winner.

The Buttonwood Harbour neighborhood could be getting two new homes in the near future.

Unofficial totals Tuesday night show Longboat Key residents voted to approve a request to establish residential density on a 0.86 of an acre parcel at 597 Buttonwood Drive.

Brista Homes founder and president Mark Ursini plans to build two residential homes at the site, which is zoned officeinstitutional. Tuesday night, he said he is grateful for the support of the voters.

“We are excited to begin designing two new homes that will complement the neighborhood,” Ursini said. “We’re also ready to begin working with the town and Buttonwood Harbour Association on a stormwater management plan that will truly help the longstanding drainage issues in the community.”

Permission to build two homes in the neighborhood still requires further town approval, including from the Town Commission.

Longboat Key has a long history of failed density referendums, which includes the proposal to put a 120-room Floridays hotel in 2016.

Overall, Manatee County voters approved the measure 47,206 (69.3%) to 20,946 (30.7%).

Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie won re-election also by more than 2-1, defeating David Galuska 241-106 (69.5% to 30.5%).

“It was obviously a big hurdle, but in the end, I really thought it was best for everyone, so that’s why I took on the challenge,” Ursini said.

While it’s not part of the referendum, Ursini’s preliminary design also calls to build a 16,000-square-foot commercial plaza along Gulf of Mexico Drive.

“It’s really time to get to work,” Ursini said. “Now that we know it’s going to be two homes, we’ll start the process on getting those lots approved in the referendum as well start the site plan approval for the commercial center.”

he Longboat Key Town Commission listened for hours Monday to northend residents opposed to a plan to replace a group of six apartments with four singlefamily homes before rejecting the proposal unanimously.

The plan to redevelop the property at Longboat Drive North and Broadway Street would have been the first to use provisions of the Conformance Overlay Redevelopment District.

CORD, which took years to develop in the town, was approved in 2019 as a means for owners of properties that no longer conform to town planning standards to rebuild in a way that meets modern-day market expectations.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney and town staff are expected to bring back a development order on Nov. 15 to formally explain the Town Commission’s rationale for the denial.

“The order will be written explaining why it was being denied so that the applicant and the affected party and others can have access to the rationale in case they want to take any other action,” Town Manager Tom Harmer said.

The commission spent hours Monday discussing and reviewing the proposal, ultimately deciding the developer didn’t meet three of the CORD review criteria: n Consistency with the intent of the CORD; n Whether the request is compatible with the character of the surrounding area, which is the Longbeach Village neighborhood in this case; and n Whether development is not contrary to the interests of the town and/or does not adversely impact or affect the public interest.

“As far as I’m concerned, and as a 15-year chairman of the Planning and Zoning (Board) that developed this, there was no way that I ever would have thought that this project that came to us today would have been eligible for the CORD,” Commissioner BJ Bishop said Monday.

Attorney Richard Lawrence of SRQ Property Law represented Cypress Cash during Monday’s commission meeting. Lawrence read verbatim from an opinion from the Florida Second District Court of Appeal on rights of ownership in support of his client’s

proposal, saying there was nothing in town code that specifically should set his client’s plan aside.

“Since zoning regulations are in derogation of private rights of ownership, words used in zoning ordinances should be given the broadest meaning,” Lawrence said. “When there is no definition or clear intent to the contrary, the ordinance should be interpreted in favor of the property owner.”

One of the prime arguments leveled by Longbeach Village residents was that the six apartments had long been vacant, so any new residential activity would make for a sudden change in the comings and goings of the neighborhood.

Lawrence and attorney Robert Lincoln argued against residents’ claims that the property was abandoned.

“The fact that nobody was living there simply isn’t abandonment,” Lincoln said. Town officials produced records of utility payments throughout 2021 and evidence of water usage in October.

Although no tenant lives in the building now, Mooney said courts have maintained that intent is often necessary to prove abandonment.

Fox Street resident Thomas Alvord is among the Village residents who sent emails to commissioners opposing the 551 Broadway proposal.

“The biggest complaint I have is their rental agreement that they had is basically bogus,” Alvord said. “I mean, sure, it may be legal as far as the rental agreement, but there has been nobody living, sleeping there, moved anything in there to become an occupant or resident there.”

Several Longbeach Village residents voiced their opinions on Monday, including Carla and Pete Rowan. The Rowans bought their Broadway Street home in 1980.

“The look of the four houses squeezed just don’t fit into the neighborhood,” Pete Rowan said.

“Two houses would be ideal.

If they put three houses down there, those three lots, I guess that would be acceptable, (but) squeezing four is just too much.”

In a phone interview with the Observer, Village resident Fred Kagi expressed his concerns about the potential flooding impact of adding four homes.

“Once you open this neighborhood to condos, it’s just opening up a bag of worms as far as I’m concerned,” Kagi said.

Architect Bob Rokop, who served as a consultant on the proposal, also spoke before the Town Commission on Monday.

“I would submit that four modest homes of 2,500 square feet would be more sympathetic to the Village than one large 10,000-square-foot home on that corner, which could in fact be constructed without any community input,” Rokop said.

Rokop, who was a resident of the Village from 1994-2014, said he presented Cypress Cash’s proposal to about 10 community members in March at Whitney’s.

In September, the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously in favor of a plan amendment, rezoning ordinance and site development plan.

Lincoln wouldn’t answer questions about what comes next for his client’s plans, referring questions to Lawrence. Lawrence had not responded to requests for an interview by publication.

On Monday, Village residents agreed with the Rowans about their preference for two homes at the site.

They argued the developer could make just as much money building two homes instead of four if they are properly built.

Ultimately, most residents said they wanted to see something new built at 551 Broadway St., though.

“They made the case of ‘We want one big house,’” Pete Rowan said. “I wouldn’t mind one big house. It’s on the water.”

Property records show 551 Broadway St. was built in 1946, with a renovation in 1981. It was initially called Lerfald Landing.

Including the two Longboat Drive North addresses, the property is about 19,635 square feet or about 0.45 acres.

Town documentation shows each of the four proposed homes would have been two stories and would have had about 2,500 square feet of living space.

The office building listed in state records for Rumble is one of three buildings in Sailboat Square, according to a listing for the property on commercial real estate website Loopnet. The two-story, 8,200-square-foot complex, built in 1981, “boasts the ability to take your boat to work and dock at a private dock outside your office,” states the listing, from Ian Black Real Estate.

New pole regulations receive initial approval Town staff is working with Verizon and AT&T to improve cell service on the north end of the island.

The Longboat Key Town Commission this week granted initial approval of proposed changes to regulations of pole-mounted equipment that will open the door for better cellphone reception on the north end of the island.

Monday’s 7-0 vote, and a second Nov. 15, clears the way for the town’s Planning and Zoning Board to hear a special exception application from Verizon Wireless on Nov. 16. Verizon’s proposal calls to install up to nine small-cell poles and antennas to boost chronically spotty service on the island.

“We are looking to make some minor adjustments to our laws to make this offer a reality, so that’s what’s going on here today,” Mayor Ken Schneier said.

Monday’s vote was necessary to allow equipment that doesn’t meet town size standards for installation on poles.

The town is planning to increase the maximum size of equipment attached to utility poles to 6 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep from 4 feet by 1 foot by 1 foot.

said, ‘These are the acceptable facility examples,’ except our dimension standards when we did them were wrong,” Town Planner Tate Taylor said.

The proposed changes also address how close poles can be from each other. The proposal calls for the poles to be no closer than 60 feet from adjacent lighting built by the town or another free-standing wireless pole.

“The other thing that this tweak does today is make sure that we don’t have two poles next to one another, so that the spacing is addressed as well,” Schneier said.

Town Attorney Maggie Mooney explained how wireless carriers will need to abide by the proposed changes should they receive final approval later this month.

“If you want to come to our island to put up your poles, you

have to be substantially similar in size, shape, height and some other aesthetics requirements,” Mooney said.

Schneier said the cell facilities will link up with the town’s underground utilities to improve aesthetics and cell service.

“Cell service on parts of the island … remains terrible,” Schneier said.

It’s unclear yet where specifi-

cally the Verizon’s poles will go.

Plus, the town is still waiting to hear AT&T’s plans to add smallcell capabilities on the island.

“Personal wireless facilities are going to differ from that town lighting infrastructure,” Taylor said. “(The) separation may be individual poles in discrete locations rather than a series of poles at the regular intervals on the right of way.”

The goal is to improve spotty cell service on the north end of the island. The Town Commission has discussed improving signal on the north end of the island for safety purposes when someone needs to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Also, people need to make phone calls for personal reasons and if they’re working from their north-end properties.

“The most important thing is we have a carrier — thank God,” Commissioner BJ Bishop said.

“I know every time I travel to Bradenton, when I get to Whitney Plaza, I have to say, ‘And I’ll be hanging up now because I’m going to lose all my coverage.’

“So for those of you who are on the north end and fight that every single day, hopefully this is going to make a big difference in all of our lives.”

The Town Commission’s approval follows the P&Z Board’s unanimous approval of the measure Oct. 19 .

The measure now heads to the Town Commission’s Nov. 15 meeting for a final vote.

Anyone wanting to set up a new mobile home in Longboat Key or renovate one beyond 50% of its value will soon be subject to new height requirements.

The Town Commission voted 7-0 on Monday to eliminate a height exemption for mobile homes and make them follow similar elevation rules as sitebuilt homes. The changes take effect in 2022.

“There are things that happen to a mobile home that is near salt water with the salt air that is a natural deterioration process,” Fenwick said. “And sometimes those have to be replaced to the tune of as much money as it would cost to buy a new unit, so you buy a new unit.”

Longboat Key has 263 residences at its two mobile home parks, Gulfshore and Twin Shores.

The new heights could reach 8 or 9 feet above existing heights, which range from about 1-3 feet, depending on location.

“This is only going to be painful if the people in your communities do not maintain their properties or if, God forbid, we have a bad storm,” Commissioner BJ Bishop said.

ost of the 50.6 million K-12 students in the U.S. are assigned to their public school. Students’ geographic residence inside their school districts often determines to which school they are assigned.

This means that many families’ public education options are limited by where they can afford to live, which leads to unequal education options for children because housing and schooling options have long been intertwined.

As the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee reported in 2019, “Despite public education’s promise of being a free, inclusive and equalizing force, families are faced with the reality that attending a highperforming public school often requires paying more for housing, and many students’ educational opportunities are limited as a result.”

Attendance zones and district boundaries place geographic limitations on the education options available to children that all too often reflect historic racial and socioeconomic divisions.

A straight-forward policy reform — open enrollment — eliminates or weakens school attendance zones and district boundaries so families’ education options are not tethered to their geographic locations. With open enrollment, students can enroll in any district-run school so long as the schools have available capacity.

Open enrollment ends the monopolies districts maintain through residential assignment and forces district-run schools to compete with one another. In fact, a 2016 report by California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office showed that a robust education marketplace can have positive effects for students and school districts.

Of the 10,200 students participating during the 2014-15 school year “more than 90% of students (transferred) to districts with higher test scores than their home districts.”

At the same time, California school “home districts” (school districts that lost students) improved their instructional offerings and expanded efforts

to engage with their communities to better compete with other school districts.

As school districts responded to market forces, many home districts experienced an increase in student test scores over time.

California’s open enrollment program showed that competition between school districts can encourage improvements.

Research indicates that increased competition from school choice options, such as charter schools or private school scholarships, can also incentivize district-run schools to improve.

Recognizing the advantages of a vibrant education marketplace, Florida’s public school choice program — Controlled Open Enrollment — is one of the most robust in the nation.

In fact, nearly 10% of students enrolled in Florida’s districtrun schools did not attend their assigned school in the 2018-19 school year.

Controlled open enrollment allows Florida children to enroll in any public district-run school with open seats since 2016. Not only does COE allow students to cross attendance zone boundaries inside the school district (intradistrict open enrollment), but students can also attend any school in another school district (interdistrict open enrollment).

Parents, however, of students participating in COE must often provide transportation to their children’s new schools.

All 67 school districts in the state are required to participate in COE and annually report the number of available seats to the Florida Department of Education. All COE policies must abide by a variety of requirements, including adhering to all federal desegregation requirements and permitting parents to declare school preferences including placement of siblings in the

same school.

The state requires school districts to ensure preferential admission to transfer applicants who currently reside in the school district or who relocate due to foster care, a courtordered change in custody due to a divorce, their active-duty military parent receiving a new station assignment.

If there are more COE applicants to a particular school than available seats, the district must implement a lottery to determine transfer student admission.

Florida, however, can make its COE program even better.

Specifically, state policymakers should require the Florida Department of Education to publish data on transfer students. This change would ensure that schools don’t reject transfer applicants without good reason.

Nonetheless, Florida’s COE remains a prime example of how families exercise public education choice and should serve as a model to other states.

In the first three years of the program, more than 787,500 students participated in Florida’s COE. The fact that nearly 55% of COE students participated in the federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch program during that time shows that COE gives low-income families access to education options outside their geographically assigned school.

Sarasota County Public Schools has participated in COE since the program’s beginning in 2016. By the 2018-19 academic year, the school district’s number of COE transfer students increased by nearly four times more than during the program’s first year there.

Almost half of COE students between 2016-17 and 2018-19 also participated in the Free and Reduced Price Lunch program.

During that time frame, most

of Sarasota County Public Schools’ 8,977 transfer students were intradistrict transfers, with only 1.4% of transfer students living outside the school district.

During the 2018-19 school year, Sarasota County Public Schools accepted the most interdistrict transfer students when compared to five other Florida school districts of similar size (Escambia, Lake, Marion, St. Lucie and St. Johns).

However, both Escambia County School District and St. Lucie Public Schools gained more intradistrict transfers that year than Sarasota County Public Schools. In fact, approximately 66% of students enrolled in St. Lucie Public Schools as intradistrict transfers during the 2018-19 academic year.

These enrollment patterns illustrate how families, especially those from low-income households, are willing to vote with their feet when unfettered from geographic attendance zones and district boundaries.

K-12 open enrollment laws can break down the lingering effects of antiquated policies that intentionally divided communities based on wealth and race. Most importantly, they are studentcentered, letting families make the education decisions that are best for their children, regardless of where they live.

Profit might respond to free-market libertarianism, but truth does not.

After weeks of clear beaches, Longboat Key last week started seeing and smelling the effects of red tide again with foul odors and some accumulation of dead fish along the gulf beaches.

Streets, Facilities, Parks and Recreation Manager Mark Richardson said Longboat Key’s dead fish accumulation wouldn’t normally have warranted a pickup, but the town received assistance from Manatee County.

“When I came onto the island . . . I could smell it, so I was like, ‘Oh boy, here we go again,’” Richardson said, adding that the odor typically associated with red tide is the bloom itself drifting ashore on west winds, not the dead fish.

The conditions prompted the town to call Manatee County for help, according to the county’s Natural Resources Division Manager Mike Elswick.

Richardson said a Manatee County worker went from north to south with a tractor and a beach raker to pick up dead fish.

Elswick said crews are limited to picking up areas where their equipment fits.

“There are some places, obviously, where there’s hardened seawalls that prevent access, but then there are also areas where the escarpment … makes it unsafe for the tractor to operate,” Elswick said.

Since July, red tide conditions have fluctuated in Longboat Key. Also since July, Manatee County began using its drone program to help the town monitor beach conditions.

Longboat Key allocates $50,000 each year for red tide cleanup. However, the town’s policy typically requires three to four tidal cycles and a moderate level of dead fish accumulation before it initiates a cleanup of a specific area.

I was disheartened to read on the Oct. 21 opinion page that Matt Walsh opposes the Local Journalism Sustainability Act. Before I explain why the LJSA is a critical piece of legislation, allow me to provide some background on the LJSA and to make some factual corrections to Walsh’s column.

The LJSA is a standalone piece of legislation with tremendous bipartisan support — from Rep. Ro Khanna and Rep. Val Demings on the left to Rep. Lee Zeldin and Rep. Vern Buchanan on the right. As Walsh noted, the LJSA proposes three tax credits: one for local journalism organizations, one for citizens and one for small businesses.

The draft of Congress’ reconciliation bill, however, only includes one of these three tax credits: the credit for local journalism organizations. This tax credit provides a 50% credit in year one and a 30% credit in years two through five against the first $50,000 of a local journalist’s salary. It is not an automatic $25,000 credit per journalist.

Walsh also asks: “Why not credits for small retailers?

Restaurateurs? Small grocers?

Construction companies?”

What a great idea, Matt! To pro-

vide some support to the small businesses that are the engine of our local economies during an unprecedented global pandemic!

Luckily, that’s exactly what the LJSA’s tax credit for small businesses does. It provides a tax credit to small businesses to market themselves and spur local commerce.

Importantly, as Walsh correctly implies, the national media and local media are very different beasts. The former seems to be as much about entertainment as anything else, whereas the latter provides communities with the objective reporting and information needed to function. In other words, local news organizations provide truth.

That’s why a recent Poynter poll found that Americans trust local news more than any other media channel by far.

And for good reason. There is now empirical data showing that communities without a source of local news experience increased political polarization, increased public corruption, increased cost of municipal borrowing and increased toxic environmental emissions.

These communities also experience decreased voter turnout, decreased civic engagement, and decreased transparency and accountability of elected officials and business leaders.

I was also disappointed to see Walsh call local news organizations a “special interest.” Nothing could be further from reality.

In fact, it is the role of local news organizations to keep special

interests in check, and local news organizations do a damn good job of it. Just last month, for instance, the Observer broke a story about potential illegal land development, leading to the director of the building department’s resignation. There are countless more examples like this. Local news is all about getting as close to the truth as possible on the issues that affect the daily lives of you and your neighbors.

Yet, sadly, one-quarter of all newsrooms have shuttered since 2004, and 60% of U.S. counties now have zero or only one source of local news. If this trend continues, the consequences to our local communities and to our democracy writ large will be devastating.

The LJSA would provide the temporary support to local news organizations that is needed to reverse this trend.

The LJSA’s clear-cut eligibility standards mean there is no ability for government officials to weaponize this legislation, and perceived “right-leaning” and “left-leaning” local media outlets will benefit equally. The biggest beneficiaries, however, will be our great nation’s citizens through the preservation of our democracy.

Fright Night fills up Circle with the statues around the Circle that had been magically spook-ified during the day to look like a skeleton surfer, a pumpkin head, a demon and more.

Even many outdoor diners at restaurants around the Circle, including Crab and Fin and Cha Cha Coconuts, dressed up and had bowls of candy to contribute to the cause.

Costumed traffic slowed at times as bottlenecks formed around candy bowls, but die-hard kids in search of a sugar fix pressed on.

t. Armands Circle got extra spooky on the 13th anniversary of its annual Fright Night on Halloween. Trick-or-treaters of every stripe, every age, several species and even other galaxies descended upon the Circle, but luckily participating stops had plenty of candy to dole out.

Although the event officially started at 6 p.m., the Circle was already filling up with characters by 5:45 p.m. Candy bowls full of treats appeared at the entries of shops where the employees dressed up, too. Families took selfies

Or rather, bazaar, thanks to volunteers at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church. The merry elves of Longboat Key are busy making gifts and decor items to be sold at the annual Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 13.

“If the elves came, they could just pick out everything they need to deliver,” co-Chair Clara McGonigle said.

The Father Edward Pick Fellowship Hall has been populated every Tuesday morning for a couple months by a group of women whose efficiency at Christmas decor rivals Santa’s workshop.

Now, days before the bazaar, the tables are stacked with decorations, extra lights and ornaments left over from tree decorating, secondhand gifts for every member of the family, tree toppers, handmade decorations, stockings and knitted goods. Hanging on the walls are wreaths that have been beribboned over the months. McGonigle said there will even be a “granny’s attic” section stocked with Christmassy linens and household items.

The showstoppers are the trees, which were all decorated by volunteers and will be available for purchase, fully festooned. No matter if you want a full-size, 6-foot evergreen or a condofriendly tree that fits on a tabletop, there’s a fir for you.

McGonigle said. “There are some young people who’ve been coming, so it’s breathed new life into the group.”

Last year, the Christmas Bazaar was only open to congregation members because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing, but it’s reopened to the public again this year. It is bringing baked goods back and hoping to see as many holiday shoppers as possible. All the proceeds from the bazaar will go toward the annual St. Mary’s charity donations, as in past years.

ome restaurateurs offer wine pairings with dinner courses. Others, like Joe DiMaggio Jr.’s Cafe BarBosso, offers its guests a 17-member jazz orchestra to complement the many Italian dishes it offers.

The pandemic took its toll on Sarasota’s area restaurants, many of which had to close, offer only takeout or morph into something creative like DiMaggio did with Cafe BarBosso. Tucked away in the southeast corner of Palmer Crossing Shopping Center off Clark Road, Cafe BarBosso was a thriving business for five years until COVID-19 quashed the ability for patrons to dine indoors.

DiMaggio, the chef and owner of Cafe BarBosso, who as a kid worked in the kitchen of a popular Italian restaurant in Little Italy in New York City, had an idea that worked: Offering family-style takeout and hiring local, wellknown music groups to play on an adjacent vacant lot to the processions of cars waiting to pick up “the goods.”

The music included the Sarasota Jazz Project, a 17-piece jazz ensemble that plays popular and original compositions; Shift Change Band; and a Saturday night rock ‘n’ roll band.

The idea spread. Soon after advertising affordable Italian family meals, the throngs of people arrived, some with folding chairs and tables. Others lined up in the parking lot for tailgating parties.

DiMaggio, having researched the price of a meal for a family of four at McDonald’s, Burger King and Chick-fil-A, offered his guests an alternative for $29.95: a meal of spaghetti and meatballs

and salad for four to six people.

“To date, I have over 180,000 orders,” says DiMaggio, who also offers “a pricier family ver-

“It’s been magical and beyond my expectations to be so supported and embraced by the community,” he says.

When patrons began to eat indoors again, DiMaggio decided to play it safe and renovate the outdoors of his restaurant to include a large, covered seating area so diners could continue to listen to music played outdoors.

He also revived the concept of showcasing area artists who were hired to paint on canvases indoors and interact with the patrons,

explaining the techniques they use in their “artwork in progress.”

The walls of Cafe BarBosso are lined with finished paintings from a number of artists — among them Tom Ruthz, Charlotte Jordan, Gary DeStafano and Cortney Wall — who might not have an opportunity to exhibit their art at popular galleries in Sarasota. All art is for sale.

“I’m providing homemade, delicious Italian food; a forum for talented artists to paint; an art gallery; and a stage for prominent musicians,” DiMaggio says. “It’s the perfect blend of art, music and food.”

Supporters of the nonprofit, which raises money to provide diapers, wipes and other essentials to families in need, filled the club for the lunch fundraiser event. Guests bid on silent auction items and participated in raffle baskets before sitting down to eat.

Mote brings back the magic

M

ote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium brought the magic back to The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota with its returning Oceanic Evening fundraiser Oct. 30.

More than 500 of the organization’s supporters took part in the event, which missed 2020 because of COVID-19, mingling and catching up in the Ritz ballroom. This year’s fundraiser had a “Magic of Mote” theme with a darker color scheme as well as a wizard hat that adorned every table.

Attendees later sat for dinner and to hear more about Mote’s mission of conserving natural resources and researching cures, coral restoration approaches and solutions for ocean threats.

BLUES PIG: THE SOUNDS OF THE BLUES In a Blues PIG show, your ears will get a trip down the Mississippi before hanging a hard turn west into Texas.

They’ll start with Chicago blues, go on down to the Big Easy with some New Orleans styles and end up in Texas with tributes to the greats of Texas blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Freddie King.

You will even hear the same era-accurate sounds you might have heard back in the day. Mislyan and the rest of Blues PIG play vintage instruments from the 1950s and 1960s to play their sets, such as old tube amplifiers and Mislyan’s custom Stratocaster guitar from the 1960s. The goal is to make it sound like the songs did when they were recorded.

“We’re playing American roots music,’’ Mislyan said.

“Rock ‘n’ roll came from the blues, and we try to pay tribute to that and capture the same sound, the same tone, by using the vintage instruments.”

Steve Mislyan, a former Longboat Key police captain, heads the blues band and has since 1997.

t’s probably safe to say the Blues PIG band is as ingrained in Longboat Key’s music scene as sand in island car floor mats.

If you’ve been to a Kiwanis Club Lawn Party, you’ve heard them.

If you set foot in a popular island bar, now closed, you’ve heard them. If you’ve been to a Longboat Key Historical Society Old-Fashioned Fish Fry or parties around town, well, you get the idea.

“We have been playing Longboat a long time,” said Steve Mislyan, the band’s frontman and a former police captain in town.

“There used to be a place called Tiny’s Lounge in Whitney Beach Shopping Mall, and it was a little smoky hole in the wall, but it was a real blues bar. We had quite a following there.”

Although the band also regularly plays on Anna Maria Island and elsewhere in Sarasota, the roots in Longboat Key are deep since the band formed in 1997.

The name refers to “passion, inspiration and gratitude” but also connects to Mislyan’s love of “pigging out on the blues.”

Mislyan retired from the police department in 2009, and another band member is James Linkogle, who works for the town’s Public Works Department.

“He can play guitar, he can play bass, he’s a songwriter, a super talented sound person, lighting person,” Mislyan said.

Mislyan and the crew will be back to play the Lawn Party on Dec. 4 this year, which Mislyan said will be at least the 10th time.

“John Wild, a longtime Longboat Kiwanian, he was the one that recruited us to start playing the luncheon,” Mislyan said.

“He’s a big Blues Brothers fan, so he likes our set list because we’re

kind of like a Blues Brothers type band, or we hope to be.”

One of the first times they played on the island was at a retirement party for a Longboat Key firefighter, and about 10 years ago, Mislyan and crew took their instruments to sea to play for the employees of Euphemia Haye on the restaurant’s 30th anniversary.

“D’Arcy and Ray (Arpke, owners) closed the restaurant, put all the employees on a bus, and they went out on a boat for an employee appreciation thing,” Mislyan said. “We cruised around Sarasota Bay when an electrical storm moved in. And I’ll never forget being out on the roof of this boat, plugged into a 100-watt Fender, but the people kept dancing, and we kept playing. God looked out for us that day.”

t’s often said that brunch is always a good idea. The members of Temple Beth Israel took that to heart and got together Oct. 31 to celebrate the ability to be together again.

The theme of the day was that happy days are here again, and more than 60 in attendance were plenty happy as they laughed, ate and caught up with friends they hadn’t seen either since last season or since before the pandemic. Before everyone settled

in, attendees meandered through the crowd and sampled cookies homemade by Sylvia Pastor, who planned most of the brunch. Attendees were reluctant to go to their seats and break off conversations, but the promise of gazpacho and multiple courses to followed helped them along.

“May this be the first of many happy celebrations we have together,” Rabbi Stephen Sniderman said before the meal.

ate October brings cooler weather up north and a mass migration of those seeking warmer climes here in Florida. With wingspans up to 9.5 feet, American white pelicans are definitely among the largest, and the most spectacular, of our snowbirds.

They are two to three times larger than Florida’s brown pelicans, which live here year-round.

And as their name suggests, white pelicans are mostly white with a yellow-orange bill, pouch, legs and feet. Their flight feathers have black on the underside and tips of the wings, which is easily visible in flight.

Unlike brown pelicans, which plunge-dive to forage for fish, white pelicans feed on the surface of the water. In an impressive display of teamwork, pods of white pelicans will often coordinate their swimming to form semicircles on the water surface. They herd the fish closer to the banks, where they can more easily use their massive pouches to scoop prey out of the water.

An American white pelican is able to hold 3 gallons of water in its pouch. Frozen lakes are not conducive to their foraging style, which is why thousands of these massive birds migrate south from the mountains and plains of the U.S. Northwest before the first frost each year.
