A good kind of traffic Longboaters typically aren’t shy about complaining about traffic, either on the island or elsewhere. But no one was likely griping on Monday morning as hulking grapple trucks scooped up Paul Bunyan-esque tree trunks, limbs, branches, leaves and other detrius left behind by the town’s close call with Hurricane Ian last month. In some cases, Gulf of Mexico Drive was down to one lane as the town’s contracted teams cleared away piles of the stuff. As a reminder, normal bluebin recyclable collection is suspended for the time being, and the town asks residents to keep their bins stored until collection resumes.

Feeding those in need Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub served more than 700 meals to residents and workers in Charlotte County. Chiles Hospitality also owns The Beach House on Anna Maria Island. The two restaurants, along with Gamble Creek Farms, partnered with World Central Kitchen, an organization that provides meals to communities in crisis. In total, more than 2,000 meals were served in three days in Englewood and Port Charlotte. “Volunteers heard damage reports about roofs being ripped off and flooding,” spokeswoman Deborah Cooney said. “Most people wanted a hot meal and cold water. They served meals to linemen and contractors as well.”
