The town of Longboat Key is nearly finished with a mid-Key truck haul that has expanded island beaches.

Longboat reaches for federal beach money For the first time in its history, the town may get help from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to renourish its beaches.

In 1984, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined the town was eligible for federal renourishment funding for about 2.5 miles of beach near the county line. Yet more than 30 years later, the town hasn’t received any funds.

But this year, the federal agency wants to spend $1.5 million to study the feasibility of undertaking a shoreline restoration on the Key, which Town Manager Dave Bullock said the municipality will match. If the study ultimately leads to both sides agreeing on a beach project for the island, the town will secure federal funding

for 50 years.

“I think we’ve gotten farther now in the last couple of months than we have in the years I’ve been here,” said Bullock, just minutes before speaking with Army Corps project manager Brandon Burch Thursday morning.

During the call, Burch outlined plans to include the town in the Army Corps’ Fiscal 2017 budget.

Despite the agency identifying the stretch of shoreline worthy of federal money three decades ago, it’s still uncertain whether the town currently has shorelines that currently qualify for much funding.

“So much has changed since then,” Bullock said. “They were

worried about Gulf of Mexico Drive washing out, we didn’t have quite the beach accesses we have today, and I’m not sure the criteria is the same.”

According to Army Corps spokeswoman Susan Jackson, the federal government has already approved Longboat for a beach project, but a new feasibility study must be undertaken before anything can move forward.

The town has stumbled in the past dealing with Army Corps, mostly due to staff promotions and turnover within the agency.

For example, Longboat had previously worked directly with Milan Mora, who is now Burch’s supervisor.

But Mora has remained involved with current conversations with the town, giving Bullock hope this time will be different.

In determining how much of a municipality’s renourishment project it funds, the Army Corps uses a sliding scale of criteria, including the number of public beach accesses, the number of parking spaces those accesses have, the frequency of public openings and the number of transit stops along the shores and other variables.

“We have a lot of transit, but not a lot of parking,” Bullock said.

Further, Bullock believes the town fits perfectly into the Army Corps’ primary mission to protect infrastructure: Longboat has a main road that sits right next to its shores and several side streets, such as Broadway at the north end, that dead-end at the beach.

“We also have a wastewater collection system that is heavily exposed and has become inundated from time to time,” Bullock said.

Still, the federal funding will be a crucial puzzle piece in the town’s renourishment strategy in the future, as sea-level rise and scarcity of sand sources sends renourishment costs soaring, said Robert Young, director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Western Carolina University.

“It’s going be a problem that lots of localities will be facing,” Young said.

In Fiscal 2017, the town is slated to spend $18.9 million out of its beach capital fund, which will be left with about $721,000 at the end of that period.

“If there were a federal match, that definitely eases the burden on our taxpayers,” Bullock.

RON JOHNSON: A LIFE IN FOCUS Former Mayor and avid volunteer Ron Johnson died Monday night. He was 84.

usan Phillips zoomed in on Ron Johnson when she needed an artist to serve as a celebrity bartender earlier this year for the Taste of the Key and Fashion Show.

He was best known as a former Longboat Key mayor and eightyear town commissioner.

But he was also an avid photographer. At 75, he’d resumed the passion for photography he’d developed as a teenager but didn’t pursue.

In typical Johnson fashion, he accepted the bartender-for-anight gig at the Longboat Key Garden Club’s largest annual fundraiser without a splash of hesitation.

“Sure,” he told Phillips, who is president of the Garden Club and assistant to the town manager. “It sounds like fun.”

“He was out of his comfort zone probably,” Phillips said. “But he’s always a great sport, and he’s always willing to help out for anything.”

Johnson, of Bradenton and formerly of Longboat Key, died Monday night. He was 84.

When he was first elected to the commission in 1998 with 65% of the vote, he summed up why he ran for the commission on election night after votes were tabulated to the Longboat Observer.

“I’m sure I can make a significant difference on Longboat Key,” he said.

To see how Johnson made a difference, look at what got done in the town between 1998 and 2006.

Town Hall was renovated. The Public Safety Complex and Public Tennis Center were built.

There was a major dredging of the island’s waterways and canals.

The town created a website and streamlined its permitting.

Throughout all those projects, Johnson was one of the seven individuals at the dais working through the details during countless meetings.

But to see how Johnson made a difference on the Key, zoom out beyond Town Hall.

Look at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts. He was a volunteer and board member who coordinated the construction of a new building and the renovation of the campus.

Look at the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key. He was a past president who co-chaired the group’s St. Jude luncheon (now the Longboat Key Gourmet Lawn Party) with his wife, Jinny.

And look at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. He held multiple leadership positions, including president of its volunteer organization of more than 1,200 members at the time, and also served as an adviser on key projects such as the Keating Marine Center.

“He was kind of the volunteer leader, and even after he wasn’t president people looked up to him,” said Kumar Mahadevan, president emeritus at Mote.

“When we needed volunteers, he was always the guy who knew how to get the groups going.”

Born June 4, 1932, in Akron, Ohio, Johnson’s father was a manager at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.; his mother, a homemaker.

As a teen, he developed a love for photography, shooting with a twin-lens reflex camera.

After high school, he followed his father to Goodyear and spent four years training to become a journeyman die-maker.

It was his uncle who helped Johnson see his potential beyond a career at the tire company.

At 22, Johnson enrolled at Akron University, working days as a die-maker while taking classes at night to earn his business degree.

Johnson spent five years working in computer sales for IBM, then began working in the housing industry, rising to the role of president in various companies.

“No matter where he went, he always went to a leadership position,” said Johnson’s wife of 37 years, Jinny. “I think it was his kind-heartedness and his ability to bring consensus around any kind of situation.”

With a busy career and five daughters, Johnson had little time

for volunteering or photography.

But after he and Jinny moved to Longboat Key in 1996, three years into retirement, Johnson got involved by becoming president of the Longbeach Village Association. He successfully ran for commission two years later at a neighbor’s urging.

On the commission, Johnson worked to look beyond Town Hall.

He built connections with other local governments, including both counties, according Webster, who was vice mayor during Johnson’s two years as mayor.

“He was really one of the first who started getting us involved with all the contingency agencies,” Webster said. “He attended a lot of meetings. I used to wonder if he ever stayed home. He knew it was important to know what was going on around us so we don’t make decisions in isolation.”

“It made communications between communities easier and better because we could learn about what did work from them and what did not,” said John Kerwin, who served on the commission for four years with Johnson.

Johnson was one of the town’s most vocal advocates for the construction of the John Ringling Bridge, which was completed in 2003. At the bridge’s opening ceremony, he was the town’s representative — which he described as

his proudest moment in his eight years on the commission to the Longboat Observer in 2010.

It was one of the many times he served as the face of the town.

He was there for virtually every event — chamber breakfasts, fish fry cookouts, pancake breakfasts — usually volunteering.

But while Johnson was highly visible in the community, he wasn’t big on the spotlight.

“He did not talk a great deal, but when he spoke, he had something to say,” Kerwin said. nnn

Post-commission, Johnson pursued his longtime dream of becoming a photographer, beginning with a downtown Sarasota photography group he and Kerwin joined together. He didn’t buy a camera until 2010.

Four years later, he was honored for his photography with an Ageless Creativity award from the Arts Center — one of many awards he won for his work.

By that time, he told the Longboat Observer, he had taken more than 20,000 pictures, some in locations as far away as South America and Italy.

But he was most proud of one he took of the Ringling Bridge about three years ago.

“It was very spontaneous,” Jinny Johnson said. “He woke up early, saw it was a foggy morning and decided to see what he could capture.”

Like most of his favorite photos, its focus was on the community he worked to better for two decades.

“My best pictures don’t come from those trips,” he said when he won the Ageless Creativity Award. “I find so much interest here.”

he said Tuesday as he awaited word that his company’s purchase of Pattigeorge’s was completed.

“I believe in being a good neighbor. I don’t envision this being a monstrosity,” he added.

But here is what it will have: “It’s going to be Florida food. Real food that everyone will enjoy,” Gonzmart said. “I don’t want to give away what I’m going to do.

But there will be great seafood and great hormone-free beef from Myakka City” — a reference to the beef his company buys from Jim and Renee Strickland, owners of the Strickland Ranch and Gonzmart family friends for three generations.

And it will have homemade ice cream. “We make all of our ice cream,” he said.

Gonzmart oversees a restaurant

empire that includes four of the historic Columbia Restaurants; two Columbia cafes; Cha Cha Coconuts next to the St. Armands Circle Columbia; and two recent additions — Ulele in downtown Tampa and Goody Goody, the restoration of a Tampa restaurant landmark expected to open in August.

Now add to the list Pattigeorge’s — although it will have a new name. “I’m still thinking about it,” Gonzmart said of the name.

It was an unexpected purchase.

The son of one of his Columbia Restaurant vendors in Tampa showed Gonzmart a flier about two months ago, a listing for the sale of Pattigeorge’s. Gonzmart remembered advice from his father, Cesar Gonzmart: “Never turn down the opportunity to build on the water in Sarasota.”

“I immediately went there,” Gonzmart said.

It was 2 p.m. midweek; the restaurant wasn’t open. Gonzmart remembers everyone’s advice about Pattigeorge’s: “It was too far north (on Longboat Key); too seasonal; the building too old.

They told me everything that couldn’t be done.”

When he pulled into the parking lot: “I immediately fell in love.”

He toured the inside. “I looked at the carpet, and then I looked beyond what I was looking at,” he said.

You know what he wasn’t saying; the 54-year-old building needed new life, new investment.

A few days later, Gonzmart took his wife and daughter to see Pattigeorge’s. Said Gonzmart: “They thought I was crazy. That was a good sign.”

Gonzmart declined to disclose the purchase price of Pattigeorge’s, acquired from long-

time owners Tommy and Jaymie Klauber. But he knows that what he paid is just the start of a much bigger investment.

Gonzmart has a lot of ideas swirling — such as building a glass-floored structure over the boat ramp next to the existing building. He envisions installing sea lights under water so they attract fish while guests eat, drink and watch the fish. “I’m just fascinated by fish,” Gonzmart said.

Expect the new restaurant to be one-story, without the live-in apartment upstairs where Klauber and Pattigeorge’s founders, Patti and George Neofotis, lived when they owned and operated the restaurant. And expect an outdoor dining deck — subject, of course, to town approval.

The final version of what is to come, Gonzmart said, will depend to a large degree on his team of architects and engineers and, as always, on what the town of Longboat Key will permit.

Gonzmart recently turned 63 and went through a prostate procedure. He has been working in the family business since age 6.

Over the past 20 years, he said, he and his family have invested millions upgrading and updating their Columbia flagships.

And in the past four years, Gonzmart has taken on the development of Ulele, a downtown Tampa restaurant that has a brewery attached to it. He purchased the Goody Goody restaurant and is near the completion of its renovation. And before Pattigeorge’s, he recently purchased a former macaroni restaurant behind the Ybor City Columbia, with plans to take it back to Sicilian roots.

Why all the new ventures at age 63? “I’m crazy,” Gonzmart said. “I feel like I’m in my 30s. It’s my destiny. It’s something I have to do. It’s something my father asked me to do. It’s for the next generation. That’s why.”

Emily Walsh, chief digital officer for the Observer Media Group Inc., has been named publisher of the company’s four Sarasotabased newspapers, magazines and website.

Observer Media Group CEO Matt Walsh — Emily Walsh’s father — announced her appointment to the company’s staff at its recent annual employee meeting.

Effective immediately, the younger Walsh, 36, will serve as publisher of the East County Observer, Longboat Observer, Sarasota Observer, Siesta Key Observer, Season magazine, LWR Life magazine and YourObserver. com. She will also continue to head up the company’s overall digital strategy and operations.

Emily Walsh, a 15-year employee at the company, is succeeding her mother, Lisa Walsh, as part of a succession plan in the familyowned business. Matt and Lisa Walsh, along with Lisa’s parents, David and Ruth Beliles, started the company 21 years ago when they purchased the Longboat Observer.

“When Emily started with the company 15 years ago, she expected it to be a part-time gig, allowing her to earn enough money to move to New York City,” said Matt Walsh. “But much to our surprise, and hers, Emily fell in love with the business.

She also previously served two years as a director of NARSAD. At age 26, Emily was one of the youngest recipients in Girls Inc.’s history to receive the “She Knows Where She Is Going” award.

Hooray for the Brits!

The U.K.’s vote to exit the EU comes at a propitious time. As we celebrate the 240th anniversary of our independence, Brexit reminds us of the meaning of liberty.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE The following are the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence, adopted unanimously on July 4, 1776, by the 13 American colonies:

ome readers, and some of my colleagues, tell me: Don’t comment on national and international issues. We’re local, they say.

They also say, “You make our advertisers mad.”

Yeah, OK. But every year, when Independence Day approaches, the patriotic urge is too great. Stories about our nation’s founding are important. Sometimes we reprint the Declaration of Independence. Everyone should read it … every year. We also publish our annual special section, “Spirit of America.”

All of this is with the intention of reminding ourselves of who we are, how we came to be and of our nation’s founding principles. And all of this needs to be repeated — again and again. It’s essential to the preservation and flourishing of our heritage, culture and liberty.

This year, the Independence Day story is in real time. And just as it did in 1776, this year’s story involves Great Britain and the United States.

They are central characters in an overarching drama, except that this year, they are separate players with separate, albeit similar, circumstances.

You might say the events of each nation may turn out to be what popular author Malcolm Gladwell would call the “tipping point” — that moment when an idea, trend or social behavior crosses a threshold and dramatically changes the trajectory of events. Or, as historian-author Jon Meacham said in a speech last weekend at the Leadership Florida annual meeting at Walt Disney Resort: When Thomas Jefferson sat in his revolving Windsor chair in 1776 in the upstairs parlor in Philadelphia to write the Declaration of Independence, “he was creating the embodiment of huge cultural trends.”

Jefferson penned in that room not only the summary of preceding decades of events and relations with the Motherland and its King, but he crystallized what became the fundamental premise of American life, then and thereafter: We have the right to create our own destiny.

And that is Brexit. And, to a degree, that is Trump, or perhaps more precisely, the Trump movement.

Brits and Americans are reaffirming they want back the right to create — and control — their own destiny.

Indeed, how wonderful it would be if, on the 240th anniversary of the Colonists proclaiming their independence and every man’s inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, every American would step back and soak in the profound statement British voters sent June 23 to exit the European Union.

Fraser Nelson, editor of Spectator, clearly illustrated in the Wall Street Journal the impetus behind the Brexit vote through the words of Michael Gove, Britain’s justice secretary.

Gove said he constantly dealt with edicts and regulations framed by the bureaucrats in the European Union in Brussels. Gove said these were rules

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

“We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,

and regulations “that he doesn’t want and can’t change. These were rules that no one in Britain asked for, rules promulgated by officials whose names Brits don’t know, people whom they never elected and cannot remove from office. Yet they become the law of the land.”

Oh, what a familiar tune.

Here in the United States, of course, under the auspices of a despot-like president and the entrenched, selfserving Congress, the unelected, unaccountable rule makers go by acronyms of EPA, IRS, SEC, OSHA and the Departments of Labor, Justice, Health and Human Services, Education and on and on. They are our Brussels, making rules and laws that constrict your freedoms, as if you’re being body-wrapped in a rope.

And increasingly, America’s producers and silent middle class — those whose wealth is confiscated to fund our own Brussels — are feeling helpless and angry, unable to stop these runaway government takers from burrowing ever deeper into our lives.

These conditions in the U.K. and here at home have parallels with what Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence wrote of the British king’s “history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.”

Mind you, neither Brussels nor our own federal government has risen to the ultimate obscene levels of King George during the 1700s. As of now, neither EU President Jean-Claude Juncker nor President Obama has gone so far as to send “swarms of Officers to … eat out their substance,” as Jefferson described. Nor have they sent into Britain or the U.S. “large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages …”

But if you read down the list of Jefferson’s 27 egregious charges against the king, many of them resemble actions that have been executed against citizens in the U.K. and U.S. over the past decade and longer.

Remember the North Carolina convenience store operator from whom

laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.”

the IRS snatched — unannounced — $107,000 from his bank account because his niece made cash deposits that exceeded federal limits? You could fill a book of “usurpations.”

Millions of Americans and Brits are today’s Howard Beales — mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

On top of the usurpations, in both countries, out-of-control and lawless immigration is provoking equal anger and frustration.

The EU’s immigration laws became such an illogical, open-border system that it wiped out any hope of immigrants assimilating and accepting the culture, mores and values of their new homes. It was as if a foreign guest moved into your home and brazenly rejected your family’s habits, customs and traditions. Brexiteers said: Enough. We are Brits; we want to remain Brits; we want control of our borders and our country.

Americans have similar sentiments. As a nation of immigrants, we welcome them. But the message of the “Trumpians” is: Immigrants can pursue life, liberty and happiness as long as they do it by the law. Get in the legal line.

So when the British sent the second shot heard round the world June 23 to leave the EU, they affirmed and shouted a familiar call. The same call that millions of Americans have been shouting ever since the Tea Party movement spread like a western brush fire in 2009 and beyond.

In both nations, voters are shouting laissez faire — “leave us alone.”

They are rejecting the political class smothering their lives with despotic rules, and they want restored their self-determining sovereignty, their liberty and the preservation of their nationhood, heritage and cultures.

In the high-rise offices of the global elites, they see Brexit and the rise of Donald Trump as hedgehog-like movements of isolationist nativism.

But talk to regular people, and they will tell you Brexit and Trump are the embodiment, continuation and reassertion of what Jefferson proclaimed: That we — not the EU, not Obama, not the IRS — have the right to create our own destiny. We are endowed with the rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

The world is a better place since the 1950s and ‘60s, for better or worse — you can be the judge about this.

Ali was named the athlete of the last century and professed peace in his later years. He got 10 pages of coverage in the New York Times, maybe because of this.

Town OKs Mar Vista expansion By the end of next summer, the iconic Key restaurant will have a second story, renovated interior and even a working water tower.

At 61 years old, Ed Chiles is ready to stop building.

In the last decade, the restaurateur and developer revitalized an Anna Maria Island business district with the Pine Avenue restoration project and completed multimillion-dollar renovations at the Sandbar Restaurant on Anna Maria and the Beach House Restaurant on Bradenton Beach.

Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub owner Ed Chiles hopes renovations preserve the iconic restaurant for generations to come.

Now, after five years, Chiles will undertake his last major redevelopment project at Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub on Longboat Key. The Chiles Group will spend about $2 million to add a second story office and storage space, expand the kitchen by 37% and redo the interior.

Last week, the Planning & Zoning Board unanimously approved a site plan amendment and special exception allowing the work, which also includes reducing indoor seating for retail space, and expanding seating under the covered porch area from 54 to 90 seats. The plans also add an additional eight seats under the trees.

“The waterfront view, under the trees — it’s whimsical,” Chiles said.

The larger kitchen will allow Chef George Quattromani to expand the restaurant’s offerings and do more special tasting menus. For example, when the new kitchen debuts next season, Quattromani could offer oysters with mignonette sauce with two other cold dishes, then three hot dishes.

“You’ll get six looks and they’ll just knock your socks off,” Chiles said.

who worked with Chiles on renovations to the other restaurants, has created plans for a water tower feature along with the second story and other changes. But diners shouldn’t expect a different feeling when they walk through the restaurant.

“We wanted to keep it as Old Florida as possible,” Schimberg said.

In 2013, Chiles proposed renovating the historic Rufus P. Jordan House to include space for weddings and small events. Residents feared the project would produce large crowds, changing the character of their neighborhood.

“There are folks who will be against everything, and they will do their best to put obstacles in your path” Chiles said. “And if you don’t have a certain fortitude, you won’t get through the process. I think it teaches me patience and humility.”

He recalls a quote from his father, the late Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles, about business.

“He said, ‘Son, if you’re ever going to try to do something really important, you’re going to have to go down into the pit,’” Chiles said. “There were sometimes when I was so far down in the pit I didn’t ever know if I was going to get out.”

Chiles withdrew that plan and pursued another to add a second story. He declined to pursue more seating and was approved to move some indoor seating to a new second story.

But when he stood on the roof of Mar Vista earlier this year, he decided the view wasn’t good enough to justify second-story dining, and changed his development plans to their current form.

Chiles’ aim is to bring the restaurant up to shape so it can last another 25 years, as he has with the Beach House and Sandbar.

“In the scope of time you don’t own anything — you’re dust,” Chiles said. “So we want to be good stewards of these properties.”

Jack Daly back on the dais Despite receiving a heart valve replacement June 2, the commissioner hasn’t missed a beat at town meetings.

Not even heart surgery can stop Commissioner Jack Daly from serving Longboat Key. Daly received heart valve replacement surgery June 2, and just four days later, he was already back to work.

“It confirms what I already knew about him, which is he’s a remarkable man,” said Assistant to the Town Manager Susan Phillips. “He’s a great man and a very effective commissioner. I couldn’t be happier to have him back on the dais.”

Daly was released from the hospital June 5 and participated in the June 6 commission meeting by teleconference.

“That meeting was important to me because, among other things, on the 6th, we approved 4-3 the firefighter’s union contract, which I was very pleased to

support,” said Daly.

A well-known robotic surgeon performed surgery on Daly, in Atlanta.

“I saw him on Tuesday, June 7, and he said, ‘Jack, everything looks so good. You’re OK without any restrictions,’” Daly said.

“He has given me a pretty good prognosis and that cardio-wise, I should be good for the long haul.

This was my first hospitalization for surgery ever, and I can’t say enough about the surgery and the outcome.”

Daly attended the June 20 Town Commission meeting in person, but is currently staying in a family cottage in Mystic, Conn. He will return for the July 5 meetings and then spend the rest of his summer in Connecticut., where he can relax and continue to recover.

Daly’s biggest concern is getting back to playing tennis, which he hopes to do in the next several weeks.

“I think he looks younger than ever,” fellow Commissioner Armando Linde said. “He’s one of the most devoted, dedicated commissioners, not only on this commission but in the past four or five years.”

Cedars hosts youth tennis clinic

edars Tennis Resort hosted a tennis clinic for students from Sarasota’s Newtown June 22.

Seven students ages 13 to 16 enjoyed a morning of tennis followed by lunch and swimming.

The students are part of a summer camp with Brothers and Sisters Doing the Right Thing.

“We try to expose them to outside a 10-block radius,” said founder Alice Jones. “They’re trying new activities in addition to networking. It’s a positive thing for them.”

WILLIAM KAPLINSKI William Kaplinski, 66, of Longboat Key, died June 16.

Born July 11, 1949, in Savannah, Ga., he graduated from Council Rock High School and received his Bachelor of Arts in communications from University of South Florida.

He married Catherine Kaplinski on Dec. 20, 1975.

He worked in sales and marketing for Eastern Airlines and Vantage Travel. He was a member of the Resort at Longboat Key Club, Field Club and Tesla Club and had a passion for family, cars, travel, talk radio and people. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine, and children, Anneliese and Andrew.

A service was held June 28.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Kindness Florida Inc., to the victims of Orlando or to the charity of choice.

Johnny Horne, 26, of Longboat Key and formerly of Holland, Pa., died June 10.

master’s degrees in the biological sciences from Florida State University, where he belonged to the Phi Gamma Delta “FIJI” fraternity and was a trapeze artist in FSU’s Flying High Circus.

He loved helping others, and he used his academic knowledge while working with the organization Grow4Vets to provide free alternative medications to veterans suffering from PTSD or other debilitating conditions.

In addition to being an extraordinary son, brother and friend to so many, his beautiful smile and tender spirit never let anyone feel like a stranger. His loved ones will remember his love for nature, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, camping, hot sauce and craft beer. He will be missed dearly by so many, but their memories and love for him will never fade.

He is survived by his parents, Neal and Jennifer Horne; two brothers, Clark and Preston; one sister, Emma; and grandparents, Ron and Doris Burns and Neal and Carol Horne.

Andrew “Pete” John Frankel, of Longboat Key and Greenwich, Conn., died June 13.

He attended Trinity-Pawling School, Oberlin College, Juilliard and Columbia University. He was also an officer in the U.S. Navy.

His 50-plus year business career involved acquisition, development and disposition of various manufacturing, service and entertainment businesses.

From 1966 to 1971, he served as executive vice president and director of Warner Communications, now Time Warner. He resigned to become chairman and CEO of National Kinney Corp., which involved parking, real estate, building-maintenance and construction subcontracting. In 1998, Mr. Frankel took the company private, and it became Frankhill Associates.

He ventures also included the Palladium nightclub, in Manhattan, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, Anita; sister, Linda; three children; and three grandchildren.

“Charlie, your paranoia is getting worse.”

“Yeah, but paranoia can save your life. Who’s your best friend?”

“Good to hear from you, Jake.”

“You’re sure I’m me?”

“Pretty sure. Nobody else would know that I’m one of your best friends. What did you want to talk about?”

“The Canadian peacock killer.”

“Bad guy.”

“At the workshop, it looked to me like you two were friends.”

“All part of my plan, Jake.”

“What plan?”

“My plan to infiltrate the Canadian-Bradenton Beach cabal.”

“There’s a cabal?”

“The good people of Bradenton Beach recalled their mayor, didn’t they?” Charlie asked.

“Yeah, but a few months later they voted him back in.”

“See?” “See what?”

“The Canadians are calling the tune up there. We need that border wall.”

“How’s the infiltration going?”

“Pretty well. I’ve got them convinced I’m a Canadian.”

“How did you do that?”

“I started saying ‘aboot’ instead of ‘about.’”

“Charlie, do you know anything about more of the peacocks disappearing from the Village?”

“Not really.”

“One of the Village peacock lovers called about the disappearance of some of the birds. She said

there had been no sign of the peacock catchers hired by the town, but there are fewer birds than there were a few days ago.”

“Jake, have you noticed that the wings they’re serving at the Longboat Hooters are extra large?”

“They’re buying bigger chickens, I guess.”

“Did you know that peacocks taste a lot like chicken?”

“No. How do you know?”

“I ate some of those extra large wings while I was over there ogling last night.”

“And they tasted like chicken?”

“Yes.” “Then what makes you think they weren’t chicken wings?”

“I think the Canadian-Bradenton Beach cabal is catching the peacocks and selling their feathers. You can’t have a bunch of plucked peacocks running around the Village. That could get those people in another uproar. So they just kill the pesky things and sell the wings to the mayor to use at her Hooters franchise.”

“I still don’t see how you connect the extra large wings that taste like chicken to the alleged disappearance of peacocks.”

“I found a peacock feather still attached to one of my wings.

Almost ate the darned thing, but it tickled my nose when I started to put it in my mouth.”

“You weren’t paying much attention to what you were eating?”

“I told you I was ogling. They got some pretty girls working there.”

“This is starting to sound like a case for the major crimes division.”

I got dressed and went to meet the Village peacock-

lover who was concerned about the disappearing birds. I knew her. I’d once arrested her for siccing her Rottweiler on a peacock. At first I couldn’t prove it, but after hiding in some bushes across the street from her house for three days, I saw a peacock slip into her yard and peck her car. She had been hiding in some shrubbery at the corner of her house and immediately gave an attack signal to the dog.

The peacock was old and sickly and couldn’t run very fast. The dog was on it in a flash. Goodbye peacock. Three days later the dog died from a disease often found in sick peacocks. The old woman was so traumatized that she began to protect the peacocks.

She didn’t want any more of them to get sick and pose a threat to her new dog, a nasty little Chihuahua.

We dropped the charges.

“I think my neighbor is behind the disappearance of the peacocks,” she said after we were seated in her living room with a pot of lukewarm tea.

“Why do you think that?”

“She and I used to be part of the anti-peacock movement. When I changed sides, she stopped speaking to me. She always sticks her tongue out at me when I see her in Publix.”

“Do you have any evidence that she’s involved in getting rid of the birds?”

“Well, she used to be married to a Canadian. Or maybe he was a Michigander. They’re all the same, you know.”

I left her house, intending to interview her neighbor, but events cascaded into more chaos, and I was called to the scene of another blown-up portable toilet at the crosswalk at the south end.

awoke with a start. I’d been dreaming about Charlie Goins and the Canadian peacock killer. I rolled out of bed and went to the kitchen for coffee. I sat on my balcony overlooking the bay, sipping from my mug and thinking about my dream.

My job as the head of the Longboat Key police department’s major crimes division is to keep the islanders safe from terrorists, car burglars and the occasional rabid raccoon.

It had been three days since I’d seen Charlie and the Canadian peacock killer slipping out of the Town Commission’s workshop, obviously enjoying themselves and each other. I was beginning to think that the two of them were in cahoots and were fomenting the chaos that seemed to have overtaken the island. I had stayed clear of the town politics, which were at times more byzantine than even the Florida Legislature’s.

The mayor had finally given in and ordered a portable toilet to set up near the crosswalk at the Centre Shoppes where the Occupy GMD people were encamped.

Somebody blew it up the first night.

A jurisdictional issue had erupted between the town and the Florida Department of Transportation over who should clean up the mess. The town’s position was that GMD was a state road and therefore not the town’s problem.

FDOT took the position that this was a sewage matter and therefore within the town’s purview.

Stalemate ensued, and the mess had remained for the past three days. The good news was that the demonstrators had moved on to another crosswalk, but the bad news was that the Centre Shops

There are some survivors, though, a lucky few that are not being torn down, but rather, brought back to life with the respect — and panache — they deserve. One of the most successful examples is the Hawthorne Street home of Henry and Susanne Rodriguez. Here one can glimpse at what Sarasota was like back in 1925, when the town turned, almost overnight, from fishing village to fashionable resort.

As grand old homes go, the Rodriguez residence is hard to beat. It’s both beautiful and historical. It was designed by Alex Browning, Sarasota’s first architect, who has the added distinction of being a descendent of one of the pioneer Scottish families that first settled here in 1885.

After a stint working for Frank Lloyd Wright, Browning returned to Sarasota and designed several of the buildings that gave the town its signature look of the mid-1920s, including The Frances Carlton Apartments on Palm Avenue.

But the home on Hawthorne has more than architectural significance. It has been owned by a succession of prominent Sarasotans — the Booroms, the Littlefields — who have shaped the town in one way or another. In 1967, it was purchased by Bill and Judy Axe and for decades was one of Sarasota’s premier party houses, the epicenter of the town’s “artist colony” days. The Axes, who met as students at Ringling College, were the leading interior decorators. Judy also was a prom-

inent artist, a founding member of the famed Petticoat Painters.

By the time Judy died at age 91 in 2013, the house on Hawthorne Street was worn and tired. It had been remodeled and updated many times over the decades and, by then, its magnificent 1920s Spanish bones were showing their age. It went under contract twice, but each time the deal fell through as the would-be new owners got cold feet.

That’s when the Rodriguezes entered the picture.

Henry Rodriguez grew up in South Florida.

“As a teenager, I would drive my dilapidated old car around Miami, up and down A1A, and dream of someday living in a Mizner house,” he said.

After selling his successful business in Puerto Rico in the late ’80s, he and Susanne moved first to Tampa, then to Casey Key,

where they bought the old Lippincot estate, home for years to the famous publishing family.

But the lure of a Mizner house was still with him, and when he discovered the Axe home was on the market, he leapt at it. It may not be authentic Mizner, but it was authentic Browning, and thus, pretty close. It had all the attributes of a grand old Spanish home and just needed a little prodding and tweaking to bring it to its full glory.

The façade and floor plan of the home are surprisingly symmetrical; in fact, there’s a strong Italian element to the design. Inside, the rooms are spacious without being overwhelming, and in the redesign, most were left as-is. Exceptions were the kitchen, a circa 1970s extravaganza of bright blue counters and garish wallpaper.

In the original dining room — now used as a family room — the fireplace mantel is decorated with shields and crests.

An unobtrusive outside stairway leads to an attic storeroom, where artwork by the previous owner was discovered.

The swimming pool is new, but the grass that comes right up the edge reflects the elegant style of the 1920s. The backyard also boasts a fish pond and lots of shade.

Vintage or new? A ceiling fan looks very much “of the period” but is actually a modern reproduction.

Much of the hardware in the house is original.

A wooden medallion sculpted by former owner Judy Axe fits perfectly over a doorway.

Now, with a vaulted ceiling and a lot more natural light, it’s crisp and completely up to date.

The Rodriguezes didn’t want historical accuracy to get in the way of modern creature comforts, and that meant a brand new master bath had to be installed. They solved the problem by adding a wing to the west side of the home, with two walk-in closets and a room-size bath with a standalone tub. French doors look out on an emerald green lawn at the rear of the house, toward a pristine white hammock hanging under the palms.

The most important part of the renovation was all the mechanical aspects. Replacing and updating everything was a daunting task; the entire process took more than a year and a half.

The attention to detail is noteworthy: The window hardware and light switches are in the style of the 1920s — new, but reproduced to mimic the old-time versions. Even the doorknobs are special — high-end modern reproductions, some glass, some metal. The doorknobs to all the bathrooms are white porcelain, as was the custom back in those days.

“They had great taste back in the ’20s,” Rodriguez said.

Two other major changes: The awkward sunroom at the front of the house was repurposed as an office, entry foyer and coat closet/powder room — the same sort of arrangement you would find in a home of the period. And

in the once-overgrown backyard, a pool was added. It’s like a pool from the 1920s — rectangular, with a carefully clipped lawn that comes right up to its edge. The effect is old Palm Beach glamour at its finest.

Dappled sunlight streams in through the original awninglike shutters, and the furnishings evoke the glamorous look of South Florida — large in scale, with many mirrors and much marble.

Reminders of the Axe era are everywhere. The two sofas in front of the fireplace in the living room were inexplicably left in the house by the Axe heirs. The Rodriguez had them reupholstered. And the wooden medallions over the doorways were found in the attic storeroom. They were carved by Judy Axe. The success of the Hawthorne Street house has put Rodriguez on a roll. After years of real estate development, his new projects are more personal.

“I have a passion for historic structures,” he says. “People are afraid of renovating them. They don’t have to be.”

As if to prove his point, he’s just finished remodeling an old house on Siesta Key. And he’s putting the final touches on a 1950s motel on Stickney Point Road that’s being transformed into a 21-room luxury boutique hotel called the Siesta Key Palms Resort. Here, the theme is a blend of Old Florida and the Caribbean, supplemented by five-star amenities.

It’s another journey into Sarasota’s past that will — hopefully — point the way to its future.
