In April, Irina La Rose was on the phone scheduling appointments as usual when a car pulled onto the curb in front of her salon, Design 2000. The car inched closer and closer until it knocked a giant planter into the window. The driver was having a medical episode and had to be transported to the hospital. The window was replaced with plywood while cracks in the building are assessed. In May, La Rose turned an inconvenience into art. Artist Stephanie Troxler used the blank plywood as her canvas to paint a pink and turquoise rendering of the island. La Rose is calling it the new Longboat Key selfie spot.

Reggie Gurland has achieved a status most of us will not: She is officially a semi-supercentenarian. In other words, she turned 105 on June 23. About 25 of Gurland’s friends and family threw a potluck dinner to celebrate. Gurland has slowed down a bit of late. She can’t make the ceramics she once loved creating because they’re too heavy to lift now. But her wit doesn’t age. When asked about her new status, she held her hand out like the queen of England and asked, “Would you like to touch me?”
