Putting the two together might seem like a stretch.

But all across town, yogis are unrolling mats at their favorite brewery.

And it’s not just yogis who are following their workouts with some liquid carbs. Several clubs dedicate themselves to following a good workout with a good pint.

In Lakewood Ranch, for example, runners hit the road for a 5K before enjoying a few beers at Craft Growlers to Go and Tasting Room, a weekly activity known

as the Brew Crew Run. Business owner Jeanne Dooley asked Rob Tucker, who now leads the Brew Crew, to have a trial run with a group around the neighborhood for a fun run 5K. Now it brings people together every Thursday to enjoy their love of running and craft beer.

“It’s a good time,” said Jason Crowell, an employee and member of the Brew Crew. “You get your exercise and good beer.”

Because alcohol is a diuretic, make sure to drink your water first, said Gudrun Novak, a registered dietician at HealthFit, part of the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Novak suggests that within 30 minutes after a workout, you make sure to down a water or sports drink before hitting the bar.

Next up on your body’s priority list is to replenish its glycogen, or energy that fuels muscles during exercise. The ideal source is lean protein and good carbohydrates — of which alcohol is not an ideal source.

Just because beer is brewed using grains, that doesn’t mean it is a source of nutritional carbohydrates.

“Alcohol has 7 calories per gram with no nutrition,” Novak

said. “You want a lean protein or carbohydrate with 4 calories per gram that is full of nutrition.”

Eating also helps counter the absorption of alcohol in the system, so, as Novak recommends: “If you’re going to drink post workout, make sure you have it with some food.”

Novak stresses that it also depends on how much you drink.

Anything more than the daily recommended amount can actually be detrimental for maintaining muscle. For women, the daily amount is one glass of wine or beer. Men can have between one and two glasses of wine or beer per day.

“First focus on replenishing what you burned off, then take into consideration how much you’re drinking,” Novak said. “As always, everything in moderation.”

In Sarasota, JDub’s Brewing Co. and Tap Room has put a twist on the concept. Yoga enthusiasts unwind with a brew while they fold into a tree pose or downward dog. The weekly yoga class on Wednesdays attracts a steady stream of 30 participants.

The laid back, backyard location is a stark contrast to the mirrored classrooms most yoga studios offer.

“A lot of people who might be kind of intimidated to go to a yoga studio can come here as an introduction to yoga,” said Meg Metcalf, instructor at Yoga Shack.

The class is open to all levels of experience and ranges of motion.

Metcalf leads the class and tailors it to each participant with tips to make a position easier or more difficult depending on his or her experience level.

If that isn’t incentive enough, the brewery offers a 10% discount to customers who participate. The option to drink while exercising is entirely up to the participant.

Nahely Guerrero and Will Barnett attended the class or the first time on a whim. They both practice mediation yoga but had never considered mixing it up at a brewery.

“I enjoyed a passion wheat during the class,” Guerrero said.

“I didn’t know what I was getting into, but the experience allowed me to relax and drink a beer at the same time.”

It’s certainly fun to follow a workout with a libation, but what are the health effects of a brew on the body?

Estimated cases of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the U.S. by 2020

ith more than 2 million people in the U.S. diagnosed, chances are you know someone who suffers from age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The condition causes blurred or lack of vision and is the lead-

ing cause of vision loss in those 60 and older. Until now, there was no at-home monitoring system for the progressive disease.

The ForeseeHome AMD Monitoring Program allows patients at a high risk for developing wet AMD, the more severe form, to monitor their progress at home.

It is approved by both the Food and Drug Administration and Medicare.

“It’s the only FDA-approved device for any kind of eye condition,” said Dr. Joshua Mali, a retina specialist at the Eye Asso-

ciates in Sarasota. “It’s exciting.”

Since it was approved by Medicare in February, Mali has written more than 50 prescriptions for the device.

Qualified patients usually have dry AMD, which makes up 90% of AMD cases. The dry form can progress to the more severe wet form, which the machine tries to catch in its early stages.

“With AMD, you can lose vision pretty quickly,” Mali said.

“If we catch it early, we’re able to preserve vision.”

ing device at least eight times per month. While looking into the device, a white dot appears, which the patient should focus on. Then, a line appears with some distortion, and the patient has to click on the warped part of the line. The process takes three minutes per eye.

If the device catches any sort of change, it notifies the doctor immediately.

“Our technology has caught up with us,” Mali said. “We’re not relying on a lined piece of paper anymore. It’s like going from a bike to a car.”

There are several risk factors for AMD, advancing age, genetics and smoking all increase the risk of developing AMD. The condition also tends to affect a greater portion of fair-skinned

patients.

“I think after age 40, everyone should have a dilated eye exam,” Mali said. “It’s the first step to evaluate, and we go from there.

The earlier we can find AMD, the better. I also encourage all of my patients to stop smoking. Diet and exercise are also key.”

Sarasota resident David Peirick, 81, has been a patient at Eye Associates for five years and has used the ForeseeHome machine for six months.

“I’m a painter and a sculptor,” Peirick said. “I don’t want to lose my sight. It’s a good thing Medicare approved it, so you don’t lose your vision. If I didn’t have this, I would be more at risk.”

Peirick is spending his summer months in Maryland, and because the machine notifies

Mali of any changes, he is still able monitor Peirick despite being 1,000 miles away.

“It’s helping because I can stay in touch with the doctor even when I’m not here,” Peirick said.

Peirick, whose left eye has wet AMD and right eye has dry AMD, uses the machine every day.

He leads a healthy lifestyle and walks three miles each morning and eats all organic food, but because one eye is wet, his other eye has a high risk of also turning wet.

“He’s just doing fantastic,” Mali said. “He’s an artist and sculptor, and he needs his vision. My job is to keep it that way. Keeping people like David productive helps society. This gives him the best quality of life possible.”

Risner earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering before pursuing medicine. He found family practice a little too monotonous for his liking, and instead decided to focus on emergency room medicine, where he could treat everything from blood pressure issues to trauma.

It was while treating a patient in the emergency room one day that he came up with the idea for Ignito. The patient had a blood blister under his fingernail.

“The treatment is to burn a hole in the nail,” said Risner, who added doing so allows the blood to drain and relieves the pressure.

To do so, physicians use a tool that looks much like a pen, but the end burns hot. Risner put on his engineer’s thinking cap.

When he got home, he took apart a radio-controlled motorcycle his daughter, Sunny, had given him.

He disassembled it, figuring out which of two wires made the back wheels spin. Then, he placed the wires into penlike tool and when the antenna received signal, the circuit was closed and the tip of the pen glowed red hot.

“If nothing else, I really impressed my wife,” Risner said.

Risner brought the idea to a patent lawyer, who referred him to an engineer, Lisa Fitzgerald.

She gave him the first prototype about four months later.

“Her job was to design it and my job was to test it until it broke, then take it back to her,” Risner said. “That took a good three years.”

They had to figure out which plastics could tolerate temperatures of 800 degrees Fahrenheit

inside, and how to keep ash from building up and breaking the circuit after multiple uses, among other engineering problems.

The product, which is good for more than 50 uses, debuted at two fireworks stores in Tampa July 2014. It went on amazon.com last Fourth of July.

Although only 120 Ignitos have sold, Risner hopes the product will become popular for providing consumers with a safer way of using fireworks. He said even for smaller fireworks, it’s recommended to be as far away as possible, at least 20 feet for fountain-style fireworks and 40 feet from aerial fireworks.

“That’s why I made this,” Risner said.

There are as many as 10,500 injuries from fireworks per year treated in emergency rooms in the United States — and that’s just the figure actually reported to Consumer Product Safety Commission. Risner said the actual number is more.

“I’ll feel good as an ER doctor to see those injuries go down,” Risner said.

e’ve all heard the adage, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the

day.”

And, it really is. It literally means breaking your fast from dinnertime.

“It’s brain food,” said Corista Williams, a registered dietitian with Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. “If you’re not eating it, you’re not going to have the energy to do what you need.”

“On a workday I have whole grain cereal with nuts and an apple, sometimes some toast. On the weekends, I’ll have oatmeal with fruit or a poached egg and a piece of toast,” Kathy Namolik.

So what should you be eating for breakfast?

Both Williams and Kathy Namolik, a registered dietitian at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, said to make sure the first meal of the day includes a good source of protein.

Both agreed, eggs are a good go-to food.

“They’re pretty much the ideal food,” Namolik said.

Sitting down to eat isn’t always an option for everyone on a daily basis.

When rushed, Williams suggested finding a granola bar or nutritional bar with at least 15 grams of protein and not lots of sugar. Her favorite, echoed

sugar than other brands.

They both said people have more reasons to eat a healthy breakfast than just giving the body energy. For those trying to lose weight, eating breakfast can play a vital role.

“When someone is trying to cut back for weight loss and cuts breakfast, in the end they eat more in the evening,” Namolik said. “Your body is driving you to eat to provide the energy it didn’t have during the day, and it can accumulate as body fat.”

Sarasota coach carries healthy lifestyle to practice ABOUT JOHN

A

native of Sarasota, John Stevenson played soccer, baseball and golf through middle school before focusing his attention solely on golf in high school.

It was more about competition than healthy living.

Stevenson, who graduated from Sarasota High in 1999, wasn’t as big or as fast as the other kids he played alongside in Babe Ruth, so golf proved to be the perfect alternative.

It wasn’t until Stevenson was studying at the University of South Florida that he started jogging and began hitting the gym.

“I wasn’t really a runner,” Stevenson said. “I was just trying to lose the weight.”

few miles in before heading in to school.

“It helps start the day,” he said.

“I try to get the legs going. The morning runs are tough. You just have to put one foot in front of the other.”

Stevenson’s workout doesn’t end there.

After school, Stevenson, who coaches Sarasota High’s crosscountry and track teams, often runs with the boys team on their easy and recovery days. If it’s going to be an intense workout, Stevenson will get a couple miles in before practice and then warm up and cool down with the team.

He’ll also often jump in during the Sailors’ offseason summer workouts.

In a typical week, Stevenson will run between 35-40 miles during the season and 60-65 miles during the summer.

“During workouts, I know they are faster than me,” Stevenson said of the boys. “On those easy days, it’s fun to not have to think about running. We’re able to talk and develop those relationships.”

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH

Stevenson took over as Sarasota’s girls cross-country coach in 2010 before taking over the Sailors track program two years later and the boys cross-country program last year. During each practice, whether he’s running alongside them or watching from a distance, Stevenson reminds the Sailors they’ll get results based on what they put into each workout. If you put the work in, eat well, sleep and recover, than more often than not you’ll perform well.

“As you get older, you have to exercise differently and do what you can to stay fit and healthy,” Stevenson said. “Your body also will tell you what you crave, so the more in tune you are with your body, the more you’ll know what you do and don’t need.”

LISTENING TO YOUR BODY

As he gets older, Stevenson has learned to put more emphasis on stretching before and after each workout. Stevenson does strengthening exercises, targeting his back, hips and glutes, while focusing on flexibility and recovery.

In years past, Stevenson would complete a rigorous biking session and then jump right in and start running with the team.

Those days are behind him.

Stevenson was 24 years old when he ran his first 5K. He was in his first year teaching chemistry at Sarasota when former crosscountry coach Kyle Mendenhall approached him about doing a run together. Without any formal training, Stevenson won his age group, which was one of the smaller age groups. Following the race, the two runners went out for a beer. At that point, Stevenson knew he had found his sport.

Stevenson began training for a marathon, completing his first one three years later at 27.

He eventually transitioned into triathlons; and in 2012 at 31, Stevenson completed his first Ironman where he finished 50th overall.

“I was definitely happy with that,” Stevenson said.

His love of the triathlon was sidetracked as his family grew in size. Stevenson hasn’t been back on his bike since the birth of his two sons, Ben, 2, and Luke, 5 weeks, but he’s hoping to change that this summer.

“That’s my mission,” Stevenson said. “I definitely feel like my legs are weaker having not been on the bike for two years.”

While biking was suspended, he continued to work out.

Diet: Breakfast consists of peanut butter with a granola bar, breakfast biscuit or a bagel. Mid-day snacks include carrots, trail mix, pita chips, peanut butter crackers or cheese. Dinner consists of pasta with pesto and chicken or other protein or a homemade pizza.
