fter surviving breast cancer, Angela Long wanted to give back to fellow survivors.

She just never imagined giving back would require a life jacket.

Long was diagnosed with late stage two breast cancer in 2004.

In her mid-30s, she was considered among its younger victims.

The National Cancer Institute says one in 227 women in their 30s will be diagnosed with the disease. Those odds increase as women age. Women in their 70s have a one in 26 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Long says her disease consumed her life during her treatment, and afterward, part of her just wanted to move on with a life that didn’t revolve around cancer.

But the other part of her wanted to help others.

“Some of my doctors would say ‘I have a young patient. Would you mind talking to them?’” Long said. “I know it’s a hard thing for others to reach out. I wanted to at least offer myself up.”

The part of her that wanted to give back ultimately led her to a meeting for the International Dragon Boat Festival for breast cancer survivors, which was being hosted in 2014 in Sarasota.

The sport had become popular among the breast cancer community in 1996 after a Canadian doctor conducted a study to test if exercise could mitigate the occurrence of lymphedema in women who had undergone surgeries associated with breast cancer.

Lymphedema is a swelling of the arms and legs that is associated with cancer survivors due to the frequent removal of lymph nodes in the treatment process.

Popular medical advice at the time advised against strenuous upper body activity, which was believed to cause lymphedema.

Dr. Don McKenzie, whose interest then was sports medicine and exercise physiology, put 24 women in a boat and taught them to paddle. He found that the exercise did, indeed, help mitigate the onset of lymphedema, and the women involved in the experiment found that dragon boating could be a useful mechanism to raise awareness about the disease.

The women kept racing and the sport spread among breast cancer survivors worldwide.

By the time Long was invited to

to compete in the International Dragon Boat festival.

The team, dubbed Survivors in Sync and affectionately called SIS, practiced in Tampa for the three months leading up to the festival. Of the 100 teams at the event, SIS finished in the top 50, despite team members limited time practicing with each other.

Shortly after, Nathan Benderson donated a boat to the team, making their new home in at Nathan Benderson Park.

the meeting, several dragon boat teams already had started in Florida, but none in Sarasota.

“At the end of the meeting (the captain of the Miami team) said ‘Well, we would really like Sarasota to have a dragon boat team,’” Long said. “It seemed like everyone turned around and looked at

me. I was the only Sarasota survivor in the room.”

She was hesitant at first. She had two kids. She was involved in other organizations. Did she really have the time to start a dragon boat team? What was dragon boating anyway? (It's a humanpowered boat traditional to the

Pearl River Delta region of China.)

“When I first got on the boat in the first couple minutes I was like, ‘This is crazy, what am I doing, this is so hard,”’ Long said.

But that feeling didn’t last long.

Long, along with about 15 other breast cancer survivors, committed to the sport and entered

In Florida, getting bit by anything is usually cause for alarm, but not for the Survivors in Sync.

Jacki Mori has been with the group for nearly two years. She’d never heard of dragon boating before she stumbled upon the International Dragon Boat festival in 2014 at Nathan Benderson Park. She was driving by with her sisters and decided to stop.

“I ended up spending the entire day there. I never left,” Mori said.

“I wasn’t sure it was a sport that I would even like, but, as they say, you get bit by the dragon, and I certainly got bit by the dragon.”

It’s a phrase that’s floated up and down the boat.

Each survivor has her own story to tell about when she got “bit” and how the sport has changed her. Even though breast cancer is what brought many of them to the dock, it’s not what has kept them in the boat.

“SIS is about sport and support. We are a dragon boat team.

There are other support groups.

Our focus is really on dragon boating.” Long said.“It's about people who want to leave cancer on the shore for the afternoon and paddle, and they in turn become athletes.”

Fighting inflammation fights chronic disease

hen Dr. Chippy Nalluri consults with her patients, the first thing she focuses on is inflammation.

“Truly for modern diseases, inflammation is the common link that ties pretty much every disease together,” said Nalluri, a cardiologist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. “Even if you think of some certain autoimmune conditions, inflammation is still the pathway. For example, a person didn’t do anything to develop rheumatoid arthritis, but how they live their life will have a dramatic impact on the expression.

For heart disease, how you live is going to be fundamental.”

Inflammation is the body’s response to fight illness or infection. But if the condition becomes chronic, the body begins to damage itself through the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, or other conditions.

As it relates to cancer, the more chronic the inflammation, the greater the chances that a cell divides incorrectly and a cancer cell forms and multiplies.

Dr. Miguel Pelayo, of Florida Cancer Specialist’s Lakewood Ranch office, said recent studies of breast cancer patients shows that if they can keep their body mass index under 25, they are 17% less likely to have a recurrence of cancer. Obesity is considered a BMI of more than 30.

Additionally, colon cancer is prevalent in the United States, while gastric cancer is more prevalent in Asia, where individuals consume more smoked foods with additional nitrates and other

nutrients. Pelayo said that speaks to the importance of a person’s diet as it relates to cancer and overall health.

“Diet really is becoming more and more a topic of conversation,” he said.

So what can you do to fight inflammation?

Nalluri, the cardiologist, points to studies by Dr. Dean Ornish,

whose program is used at Sarasota Memorial.

Ornish's research has shown that how you eat, how you exercise and how you manage stress can reverse heart disease.

“What you eat is fundamental,” Nalluri said.

Generally, patients who follow a plant-based diet are better able to fight disease. With the plant-

based diet, individuals consume protein in the form of whole grains, beans and legumes, certain soy products, nonfat dairy and green leafy vegetables.

“That plate has a tremendous amount of protein and that protein will serve to fight disease,” Nalluri said.

Nalluri recommends filling your plate with color — kale,

spinach, arugula, watercress, red cabbage, acorn squash and sweet potatoes. Avoid processed foods as much as possible. Instead of eating bread, try quinoa, amaranth or ancient grains.

“We want to see grain in its natural state,” she said.

Corista Williams, clinical nutrition manager at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, agreed.

“Dietary fiber helps to keep the heart and gastrointestinal system healthy,” she said. “The highquality nutrition found in these particular foods can help maintain adequate levels of vitamins and minerals that are associated with a healthy immune system.”

Williams recommends limiting red meat to once a week. And, when you do eat meat, try fish like salmon and tuna, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Nalluri said some data even shows that meat, particularly red meat, can promote the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels.

“Limit saturated fats, such as fried food, chips, cakes,cookies, pie. They can actually increase inflammation in the body,” Williams said.

Step two is exercise.

“You don’t have to be that person who runs the marathon,” Nalluri said. “Low to moderate exercise gives you that antiinflammatory benefit.”

Stress reduction also is important, and often is a byproduct of exercise. Studies show exercise can be as effective as one antidepressant for treating moderate to mild depression.

And then there’s sleep.

“The body has the ability to heal if you give it a chance,” Nalluri said. “The goal is we all die healthy. Getting sick is not the natural process of aging.”

“They are scared and concerned,” said Devolder, who leads the Look Good, Feel Better class offered by the American Cancer Society to offer support to newly diagnosed cancer patients.

She saw those looks for 10 years, then she lived it herself.

Four years ago, it was Devolder who walked through the door. She was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

“I've been through it, and I know what they are going through,” said Devolder, who teaches clients “tricks” to deal with hair and makeup.

“Everything is just positive,”

Devolder said.

Classes are held the first Monday of the month at 2 p.m. at 2970 University Parkway in Sarasota.

She passes along one of the tricks she used after her head was shaved and she didn't want to take the time to wear a wig.

“I would cut off an extra large T-shirt,” she said. “I would cut off the sleeve and put it on my head.

Then they have these hairpieces with little bangs that attach with Velcro. You get yourself a baseball cap, attach the hairpiece and you look like a million bucks.”

Beth Hayes, program manager of mission delivery for the American Cancer Society, oversees the program.

“What I find is that they are not feeling very confident in their new normal. But they talk, tell stories and laugh. It's pretty magical,” she said.

Each person who attends the free class receives a makeup kit valued between $250 and $300 and instruction from volunteers.

The class shows those who attend how to apply makeup because their skin tones change.

Part of the program involves trying on turbans and scarves. The class offers complimentary wigs and has products for those who have gone through a mastectomy.

“These are all newly diagnosed patients who are on chemo or radiation,” Hayes said. “They come in lackadaisical and feeling defeated, but the program helps in a lot of ways.”

Those fighting cancer who would like to look good and feel better also have other alternatives, such as In the Pink boutique at 1727 Fruitville Road in Sarasota.

Rachel Armstrong said In the Pink is one of a few mastectomy boutiques from Fort Myers to Tampa. She said the cost of prod-

ucts, from prosthetics to bras and other clothing, to wigs and hair products, are usually covered by medical insurance.

“We see them through stages,” Armstrong said of her clients.

“They come in overwhelmed.”

Most clients hear about the boutique from their doctors.

“When I help a client, I think the hardest part for them definitely is losing hair,” Armstrong said. “But it is harder for them to just let their hair fall out than to take control. We have head shaving parties, either after hours or any time of the day. They choose their music.”

She said the key is that In the Pink knows how to treat each client with empathy and how to be patient through the process.

“A lot of them are terrified,” Armstrong said. “We consult with them because they have no idea what this entails. We know they are going to be emotional through the entire process.”

Armstrong said the boutique offers “styling for success” hair care and focuses primarily on mastectomy services and clothing, such as bras and swimwear.

Those who come through the doors also find a lot of wigs.

Although Armstrong said the majority of their clients are over 55, they help patients of all ages.

“This is not about sales,” said Armstrong, who quit a lucrative career to work in the boutique. It’s about spreading the word.

“Some women slip through the cracks,” she said.

Paula Morris was one of those who almost went unnoticed.

“As many things go, In the Pink and I had been moving in separate universes,” she said. “As a yoga therapist, I had trained to sooth people going through chronic illnesses to manage their symptoms and recover quality of life and greater health. As a nonprofit boutique of offerings for women living with cancer, In the Pink

existed for that same mission.”

In February, Morris was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had three surgeries in six months, including a double mastectomy and lymph node removal.

Although yoga helps with her lymph gland function, she was referred to In the Pink for a compression sleeve.

As Armstrong measured Morris for different styles of sleeves, she discovered her personal story.

Although In the Pink offered free yoga classes, the instructor had just moved on.

The two planned a new series of yoga classes taught by Morris that began Oct. 5.

“As a woman surviving cancer who is also self-supporting, self-employed and significantly set back by an inability to work much this past year, I found that in a mysterious, synergistic way, people who truly help people heal and recover come together,” Morris said.

Bounce back quickly from surgery These techniques help bodies balance, hydrate, align and energize.

Life post-surgery is more of a journey than most expect.

Soreness, stiffness and overall discomfort are some of the most common downsides. But with some techniques, those sore spots and discomfort can recover more quickly.

The MELT Method, qi gong and tai chi are different techniques that can help a body prevent, prepare or recover from surgery.

THE MELT METHOD

This method works to create better hydration, alignment and communication through the body’s connective tissue.

After surgery, bodies go through the process of scarring, which causes surrounding tissue to stiffen and dehydrate. When the connective tissue is dehydrated and stiff, the timing in the muscles isn’t right.

That causes our body to overcompensate, which can lead to injury, said Shannon Willits, who is certified through advanced levels of STOTT Pilates.

“So, let’s say someone has been compensating a long time, and they’ve had the surgery, so by creating better connective tissue and hydration we can then work on the underlying issue of the

neuromuscular timing because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about,” Willits said.

MELT’s major focuses are the four R’s: reconnect, rebalance, rehydrate and release. The four goals help hydrate the connective tissue system, which supports, protects and stabilizes the body. When the connective tissues is dehydrated, chronic pain becomes an issue.

A major benefit of the MELT method is that its techniques work indirectly, meaning you don’t actually have to work on the problem spot. MELT works to sleuth out the cause of the pain, Willits said.

Think of the body as a house.

“Your feet would be your foundation,” she said. If you’re foundation is not level, your house will fall down.”

QI GONG

The system of traditional Chinese medicine is based on the idea that a body is healthiest when it has abundant and flowing energy.

Qi gong is an ancient practice that believes health, vitality and longevity can be improved in simple ways, instructor Nancy Saum said. Qi gong integrates physical posture and breathing techniques with the intention of opening energy blockages in the body.

It uses the same meridian system as acupuncture, but without all those needles.

It’s "one where we move in a relaxed body, and we breathe, and we have a focused attention to what we’re doing, and the ben-

efit and the bottom line for all that is it allows us to enter into a state of relaxation," Saum said.

“It improves [your] mood and your ability to sleep,” she said. “It improves digestion, so if you’re absorbing nutrients better, you’re going to heal better.”

“Qi gong is easy to learn, immediately relaxing, even in the first class, and it’s not stressful at all,” Saum said.

TAI CHI

Tai chi is a little more complicated than qi gong, but based on the same idea. It can help improve balance and prevents falls.

Tai chi focuses on the upper half of the body moving differently than the lower half of the body. Since that can be difficult for some, Saum said one of her teachers created tai chi easy, which teaches upper body movements and walking separately before merging them.

It has different styles that have 100 different forms, which can cause stress. But the movements are gentle and rarely have negative effects.

“You get the benefit without the downside of the wearing down that happens with things like jogging,” Saum said.

n preparation for her 16th marathon, Lakewood Ranch’s Joan Novak, 65, woke up at 4 a.m. on a recent Saturday. She began with her normal stretching routine, then took off to meet fellow members of the Lakewood Ranch Running Club near her home at the intersection of Clubhouse Drive and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard.

Novak, a 10-year senior member of the running club and 19-year breast cancer survivor, ran 22 miles that morning. She went to the gym afterward, and it’s safe to say she’s well surpassed the finish line to recovery.

“Running keeps me fit, it keeps me young and it keeps me motivated — staying healthy is important,” Novak said. “When I go out and run, it’s a good thinking time, and it’s a time to make you strong. For many women who have jobs and children, that’s their time, they run. That’s a personal time that can’t be taken away from you. It makes you a better person because you’ve had that time.”

“It (running) made me feel normal, that I had some control over my life rather than being so scheduled and my whole life revolving around going for chemo, or going to a doctor’s appointment or blood work, etc.,” Novak said. “Exercising helped me focus on getting well.”

Novak’s treatment didn’t impede on her workout routine.

Cure during her treatment. If anything, it only persuaded her to exercise more. But it didn’t make treatment easier.

“I can’t say that I didn’t want to give up after session two during chemo, because I did,” Novak said. “Anyone that’s going through it, I would say, do something for yourself — something that makes your day feel normal.”

Novak and her husband, Terry, 65, moved from Illinois to Lakewood Ranch in 1998, about nine months after chemo and radiation. Moving away from her previous medical support team was worrisome for Novak. Running helped keep her healthy and stay “one step ahead,” she said.

Novak has been a part of the Lakewood Ranch Running Club for at least 10 years. She’s participated in 15 marathons across the country, and come March, she will have reached 20 years free of breast cancer.

Novak said she feels lucky to have had a swift recovery. However, talking about her battle hasn’t always been easy for her, but she was clear in that running played a big part in her recovery.

“For a long time I wasn’t open about my diagnosis or my recovery, because you never know if it’s going to come back,” Novak said. “But now, if I can help someone else in any way, or encourage them in any way, I think I’ve done a good thing.”
