Another happy day for the Knights Mike Mahan, a member of Our Lady of the Angels’ Knights of Columbus, presented a $15,000 check to Lakewood Ranch’s Dave and Anne Parker for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on Jan. 18. The Parkers have been volunteers for St. Jude for four years. Dave Parker said it was an honor to accept the check on behalf of St. Jude. “It’s amazing to be able to support an organization like this,” he said. The Knights of Columbus raised the funds through a car show held in November. During the check presentation, Anne Parker told Knights of Columbus members that their donation will go toward the approximately 8,600 children St. Jude serves per year. Since the hospital opened seven years ago, its survival rate of children with cancer has increased from 20% to 80%, Anne Parker said.

A century, plus another four With the dining hall decked out with purple plates and four shades of purple balloons, Poet’s Walk celebrated Carmen Barrett’s 104th birthday on Jan. 22. The celebration at Poet’s Walk, the assisted living facility where Barrett resides, actually was held three days late, on Jan. 25. Barrett wore a purple top to match the decorations because it’s her favorite color, and the staff dolled her up even more with a gold sash and tiara. Barrett’s family, friends and the former mayor of Sarasota, Liz Alpert, were all in attendance to wish Barrett a happy birthday. “We’ve been friends for over 30 years,” Sarasota’s Gloria Collins said. “We used to play tennis together.” Barrett played tennis into her 90s.
