In honor of our veterans Every Thursday, former Army Corps of Engineers E-4 Specialist and Tara resident Jack Sydor (above) eats breakfast at Bob Evans with a group of more than 30 veterans. On Nov. 9, he made a second stop at the Lakewood Ranch-Sarasota Elks Lodge to have lunch. The Elks hosted a free lunch for local veterans. Sydor ate a hamburger and caught up with friends. He’s been an Elk for 45 years, but all veterans were welcome. In 1965, Sydor was drafted into the Army for six years, but in a twist of fate, President Lyndon B. Johnson intervened in the Dominican Civil War, so Sydor spent two years overseas in the Dominican Republic mainly working construction. “We lived in a 12-man tent for a year,” Sydor said. “But I was extremely fortunate that I didn’t have to go to Vietnam.”

Students participate in monumental ceremony
Decked out in red, white and blue, Braden River Middle School’s Hannah Thai and Malia Ho (above) were ready to honor community veterans. During a Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 9, Braden River Middle School unveiled a mosaic that copied the Marine Corps War Memorial national monument. The border has tiles naming veterans and when they served. It’s tradition for a mosaic to be completed each year. The celebration also included orchestra and band performances. Members of the Braden River High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps presented the flags. Several other East County schools hosted Veterans Day celebrations as well.
