Wellness fair gets blood pumping After getting their blood pressure checked, Crossing Creek’s Sara Zavos and her husband, Robert Zavos, decided to have a little competition using the heart-shaped stress balls they received for free from LECOM. The couple wanted to see who could squeeze the stress ball more in a minute. Sara Zavos was able to squeeze the ball 75 times, beating Robert Zavos, who only squeezed it 68 times. “She’s better at this than me,” Robert Zavos said. Sara and Robert Zavos visited the 55 vendors at the Senior Wellness Fair at the Lakewood Ranch YMCA on Nov. 2 to see what other local organizations could offer seniors. Sara Zavos said the fair was excellent, and she appreciated being able to see services including assisted living, financial planning and healthcare. “I know I’m going to eventually be looking for these services to use myself,” she said.

Gardening knowledge grows at Greenbrook After Petra Pearsall moved from Pennsylvania to her new home in Greenbrook two months ago, she hoped she could have a garden like her previous one. Pearsall said her Pennsylvania garden had “everything” including papayas, grapes and pumpkins, and she is hoping to learn how best to grow plants in Florida. She attended the Vegetable Gardening 102 course at Greenbrook Adventure Park on Nov. 2. The class was presented by Lakewood Ranch Community Activities to prepare residents for the reestablishment of the Adventure Park’s community garden. Mack Lessig, community gardens program assistant at the University of Florida Extension Office, provided demonstrations of seed planting and offered other tips. Pearsall said found information on planting dwarf fruit trees.
