Age is just a very big number Ralph Hoey and Kay Oberstar, who are residents at Cypress Springs Gracious Retirement Living in Lakewood Ranch, celebrated their 102nd birthdays with a big cake Aug. 26. “I didn’t expect to get here, but I did,” Hoey said about turning 102 on Sept. 1. Oberstar, who turned 102 Aug. 26, said age is just a number. “It’s more about how you feel so far, and I’m feeling OK,” Oberstar said. Oberstar and Hoey said the keys to a long life are staying active, exercising and not eating a lot of sweets. Hoey said he liked to swim every day.

Louis finds new nest on the Ranch KaDee and Bill Blake found Lakewood Ranch a fitting place to live with their fictional friend, Louis the Pelican, so they moved here from Louisiana in 2021. They also found a second home for Louis at UTC’s Night Market, where they began selling Louis items that include T-shirts and drinking glasses. The couple created Louis to adorn the cover of their Christmas cards at their previous home. They eventually expanded, selling cards with Louis on the cover at a local market. Although pelicans are the state bird of Louisiana, the Blakes had never had the chance to be around them until moving to their new home in Lakewood Ranch. “Every time we see a pelican, we say, there’s Louis,” KaDee said. The UTC Night Market takes place from 7-10 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The next market will be held Sept. 15, with music by the Keith James Band.
