Cascades residents donated so much in school supplies, it overflowed out of a back area of the East County community’s ballroom.

In addition to the dozens of backpacks and countless pencils, highlighters, notebooks and rulers, the community donated $1,630 in cash.

Ruth Dweck (above), the chair of the Cascades of Sarasota Women’s Club school supply drive, used $810 of the $1,630 raised to purchase more school supplies, and all the supplies and remaining cash was donated to Hope 4 Communities, a nonprofit that serves families in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

“Our Cascades community has been so generous,” said Millie Fischer, a member of the women’s club. “Every time we have a drive like this, everybody just comes through.”

Her only regret was that she couldn’t take home the store’s fluffy and mild-mannered dog, Trixie.

“We’re just trying to make it a special day for people to get out and enjoy themselves,” said Michelle Bridges, the owner of Fantasy Flowers.

Bridges said the shop tries to host a different event every month to bring people to Main Street at Lakewood Ranch.

He said often that communication can result in restored power to most customers in less than a minute.

“Instead of having 2,000 customers waiting for a repair, you only have 300 to 500 waiting for a repair,” he said.

Bennett said it was back when Hurricane Charley (2004) and Hurricane Wilma (2005) hit Florida that FPL decided it needed to make advancements to be more prepared for natural disasters.

“Those storms in a short amount of time led not just FPL, but I think all of Florida, to reexamine, and make upgrades to our systems,” Bennett said.

Teigland said about 85% of the switches are on above-ground lines, and about 15% are underground, although the company is now focusing more on building them below ground.

He said the newest switches have the capability to send out a low-level pulse of electricity to identify problem areas. That low-level pulse does not affect the system’s ability to provide power to homes. Previously, in checking for problems, power was toggled to neighborhoods, which would affect a home’s power.

Barry Lawson, a production lead with FPL, said 10 years ago the company began upgrading its power lines to better withstand hurricane-force winds. The University Parkway pole was an example of the newest design.

According to FPL Spokesman Marshall Hastings, poles in the Manatee and Sarasota County area are required to withstand winds up to 130 miles per hour, as required by the National Electric Safety Code’s standards.

Lawson said the process of upgrading power lines is known as “hardening.” He said the steel and concrete poles used for the transmission lines – or mainline power lines – are installed primarily because of the

tanding next to a 6,000-pound steel and concrete pole Florida Power & Light was erecting at the eastern end of University Parkway, FPL spokesman George Bennett talked July 27 about his company’s technological advances.

It was part of FPL’s effort to show local residents how it is upgrading its main power lines to withstand hurricane-force winds and deal with potential power outages caused by severe storms.

The new pole at the end of University Parkway includes an automated “smart” feeder switch, a device which during a power outage can send information back to FLP staff on the location of the outage. The switch also has the ability to reroute power around the affected area.

FPL now has 200,000 such devices throughout its coverage area.

Along with showcasing the sturdier pole and smart switch, FPL also demonstrated how it uses more than 200 drone flights a day to assess its power lines and equipment. Bennett emphasized how drones would be used after a severe storm to identify problem areas, and to get “the right crews and the right equipment to the right place to help speed restoration.”

Also present at the demonstration was Rick Teigland, a manager of grid automation with the company, who said the ability of the automated feeder switches to direct the flow of power has been a game-changer.

He said the smart switches actually have the ability to communicate with each other in an effort to direct power around a problem area. While the problem area might not have restored power until a repair, the areas beyond that problem area can continue to have their flow of power.

Bennett said other components of hardening include spacing power lines more closely together, something which decreases their susceptibility to damage. He said another important component is management of vegetation, with trees blowing into lines being a leading cause of power outages.

He said measures are taken to prevent flooding from storm surge in substations that manage power from below ground.

He said pole inspections are now conducted every eight years.

Once the poles are installed, they require constant supervision, an obligation which Lawson said is made vastly easier by the use of

drones, which they started using 10 years ago.

Lawson said the company used to perform what was known as climate inspection, which required its staff to be physically present to check the wires, using a bucket lift truck.

“That’s a very slow, tedious, and time-consuming process,” he said. “(Using drones) is better, quicker, and safer.”

FPL drone pilot Matthew Harvey said the drones use a 30x optical (telescopic) zoom. He said although each pole is different, typically the optical zoom is sufficient to uncover any issues. The drones are also equipped with the ability to zoom an image digitally and also can transmit an infrared view to staff members.

Lawson said the infrared technology allows engineers to detect, and respond to, damage which is not externally visible, and can only be observed through heat levels.

“Climbing the pole, you’re not going to see those heat-related issues until there’s substantial damage,” he said. “This technology will pick it up well before any damage occurs.”

He said some components which often experience failures include the lightning arresters, which divert the energy from lightning strikes away from the power lines and into the ground. Lawson said these devices are important for protecting customers from electrical surges and can become damaged internally.

“That’s pretty important,” he said of ensuring those devices are operational. “We have a lot of lightning around here.”

He said another concern is damage to electrical wiring, indicated by “hotspots” where increasing heat levels are observed.

Drones identify woodpecker damage to insulators, which is a frequent problem. Drones also spot other concerns that include rusted screws, bolts and insulators, along with loose wiring.

If a drone is within sight of a pilot, it can be used to examine power lines up to two miles away. FPL is now attempting to obtain a license which would allow it to operate the drones outside of their line of sight.

IS PREMIER POOL SIZE SHORTSIGHTED? Commissioners say they aren’t in too deep to change length of planned pool.

fter more than a dozen Lakewood Ranch area residents attended a July 28 budget meeting of the Manatee County Commission, advocating for a 50-meter swimming pool at the future Premier Park project in Lakewood Ranch, instead of the previously proposed 25-meter pool, a county staff member confirmed such a change is feasible.

Angela Honts, a project manager with the county, said the park’s plan is “conceptual” and could accommodate an increase in length, with no impact to other facilities.

Those opposed to a smaller pool were pleased.

“We feel the commission listened to the citizens and to the swimmers,” said Panther Ridge’s Maggie Mooney.

County Administrator Scott Hopes said during the commission meeting altering plans from a 25-meter pool to a 50-meter pool would cost approximately $770,250.

He was confident he could work with Interim Chief Financial Officer Sheila McLean to find the money.

Mooney said not only will the pool benefit residents, but it would also be a revenue generating operation.

The county is planning other facilities at Premier Park such as an amphitheater, gymnasium, baseball and softball complex, bike track, basketball courts, volleyball courts, clay tennis courts, and a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office district office and fleet facility.

The county’s Capital Improvement Plan for Fiscal Years 2023-2027 has $28,450,083 budgeted toward Premier Park’s sports facilities.

SWIM COMMUNITY ORGANIZES

The commission meeting drew speakers from five families whose children are involved with area swim teams, as well as Samantha Presley, a swim coach with the Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team.

Mooney said her interest began six months ago when she learned about the pool length, due to the investment of her two children, 11-yearold Payton Portale and 8-year-old Teagan Portale, in swimming.

The two children are both on the Tsunami Swim Team.

Mooney said based on the number of meets the Premier campus attracted for soccer, she was excited by news of a pool until she realized “it was an undersized pool that certainly wouldn’t generate comparable revenues and frankly, would still leave the county with a void of a 50-meter pool.”

She said the push for a longer pool became a collaborative effort involving not only the Tsunami swim team, but others including The Lightning team of the Lakewood Ranch Swim Association. She said a petition had around 1,400 signatures by the time of the meeting.

A 50-meter pool, which is an Olympic-level size, is the standard for competitive swimming. Mooney said practicing for these competitions in a 25-meter pool is difficult, for it requires swimmers to become accustomed to performing a flip turn

at the wall.

As her girls have progressed in the sport, it has become increasingly difficult to accommodate their swim practices from their home in Panther Ridge. She said they currently swim mainly at John H. Marble Park in Bradenton, a 25-meter pool, but on occasion are able to visit G.T. Bray Recreation Center and Arlington Park & Aquatic Complex in Sarasota, both 50-meter pools.

Mooney said the journey from Willis Elementary to John H. Marble Park involves rush hour traffic.

“It’s stressful for the kids, it’s stressful for parents, but this is a sport that your children love,” she said.

Mill Creek’s Ava DiPasquale spoke to commissioners about her passion for the sport.

“A key to my success is I have been going to Sarasota since April, every opportunity I get, to train, and swim, in the 50-meter pool,” she said.

“Swimming has taught me motivation, dedication, time management, and how to deal with success and loss.”

Her father, Derek DePasquale, said she ranks among the top five swimmers in the state in the 100-meter butterfly in her age group (10 and under).

Speaking at the commission meeting, Teagan Portale described the journey as “always a hustle,” saying it sometimes made the family late for the practices.

Derek DiPasquale said the DiPasquale family regularly makes 22-mile trips to Arlington in Sarasota. He said the minimum number of practices required at Ava DiPasquale’s level is five a week.

“The increased gas costs, the time, it’s a tremendous commitment,” he said.

Ava DiPasquale also said the practices are difficult to arrange, with her having to put more effort into finding time for tasks like completing homework, as well as carpooling with other swimmers to make the trip.

Former U.S. Olympian and gold medalist (1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, 4×100-meter medley relay), Tripp Schwenk advocated for a larger pool based on what he said were needs for water safety through more pool space.

COMMISSIONERS SYMPATHETIC

Commissioners expressed support for a larger pool with some also cautioning residents about the ability to fund the project.

District 5 Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said, “I am on board, I will push this,” stating she would flag the project for further review, pointing to her history of advocating for a competition-length pool.

Baugh said she was “all in from day one.”

She also said, “Then, we need to make sure that it is quote, unquote, a Premier Park.”

She said the county has “ample” reserves for the project but needed to confirm whether it was feasible.

At-large Commissioner George Kruse said he thought Premier was an important asset for Manatee County, explaining the Premier Park complex might be competing with, or working in conjunction with, locations such as Robinson Preserve and Nathan Benderson Park.

“I want Premier to be a worldclass facility,” he said.

He said he would favor having commissioners and engineers determine the additional costs.

“I don’t want to do something else halfway, especially at that location.”

At-large Commissioner Carol Whitmore called Premier a place where Olympians “would come from all over the world” and described it as a fitting location for a 50-meter pool, while calling for a clearer picture of the cost.

District 1 Commissioner James Satcher said he would support the pool based on the county’s current reserves.

“I am a guy that is in favor of lower taxes whenever possible, but at this point we have this money that is already taken in, and it seems like a smart investment, to make it someplace that people want to come, from other areas.”

Commissioner Kevin van Ostenbridge said the pool at G.T. Bray Recreation Center, which is located in his district, was currently “bursting at the seams,” with county staff dedicated to ensuring sufficient staffing for the numerous high school and college teams using the facility.

He said the board needed to ensure sufficient funding.

Commissioners Reggie Bellamy and Misty Servia also expressed support, but also described concerns around funding.

According to county records, the pool is currently budgeted at $13.59 million. During the meeting, both Servia and Whitmore expressed interest in using tourist tax to fund the project.

Hopes said based on his research and conversations, the facility needs a 25-meter pool, a warm-up pool, a 50-meter pool, and a therapy pool.

“If we have all that on that complex, I believe people won’t be talking about going to Charlotte County,” Hopes said. “They won’t be talking about going to Orange County.

They’ll be talking to go about going to Premier in Lakewood Ranch, the fastest growing community in the country.”

RESIDENTS PLEASED

Advocates for the pool said, following the commission meeting, they felt optimistic about the proposal’s future success.

Samantha Presley, a swim instructor with the Tsunami Swim Team, said she found the meeting “very successful.”

“I was pleased to hear the outcomes from the commissioners themselves,” she said. “All of them, from what I’ve heard, were on board.

Hopefully, we’re going to get what we want, and find our money for it.”

Central Park’s Catherine Gates, whose 8-year-old daughter Julia Gates belongs to the Lakewood Ranch Lightning, said she felt that the meeting brought positive results for the group.

“Judging by what was said, I think they are on our side,” she said.

She said that a 50-meter pool would be needed in the community at some point, a view which had also been expressed by Kruse.

“If they don’t build it now, they will have to build it later,” she said.

“Just build it now and we’ll be out of your hair, and then you can move on.”

Jen DiPasquale said that while the commission emphasized the topic of money, she had spoken at the meeting to emphasize that the pool itself could bring in revenue.

“We were trying to make that point today,” she said. “You build a pool like this? It is going to be an economic driver for the community.”

Mooney said it was the economic factors, and not only the turnout, that led to the success of the advocacy. “It’s not just about people turning out,” she said. “It’s also that this makes sense.”

More steps still await the project before it could be realized.

However, Honts said the project has not yet begun its design phase and, therefore, proposed revisions would be included in the 30% plans submitted at the start of design. She said there could be an increase in design fees, and a design contract change, and that those alterations would require approval by county commissioners.

Current time estimates, she said, including final design completion in September 2023, ground-breaking for the project from December 2023 to January 2024, and completion in April 2025.

Honts said in the case a change order to the contract is requested, it could add one to two months to the design completion timeline.

Guy Grimes, the principal of Freedom Elementary, and his staff were celebrating when the Florida Department of Education released his school’s grade.

Freedom Elementary School received its first A rating since Grimes became principal six years ago. The last time the school received an A rating was in 2014.

“As a principal, I’m proud of all the hard work of our students and our teachers,” Grimes said. “It’s kind of like a proud parent when you see your children succeed. It’s so much joy to see all their hard work pay off.”

Several schools across the School District of Manatee County, including seven in East County, saw a fluctuation in their school rating compared to 2019 when the Florida Department of Education last gave official school ratings.

School grades were not given in 2020 as a result of schools having to move to virtual learning due to the pandemic. In 2021, school grades were optional, and only eight Manatee County traditional schools and six charter schools opted to receive a grade.

The School District of Manatee County overall received a B rating for the 2021-2022 school year, maintaining its rating from 2019.

Laurie Breslin, the executive director of curriculum and professional learning for the district, said the district was three percentage points shy of receiving an A rating.

The school district now is ranked 25th in the state, the highest ranking in the district’s history.

“We’re excited our schools did so well,” Breslin said. “We saw a lot of gains in areas that the previous year were under expectations probably due to COVID learning loss, and we found we’ve made up that ground.”

For example, Breslin said the district saw gains in fifth grade reading.

“We saw stronger results than we’ve ever seen in fifth grade reading,” she said. “Our students are heading into sixth grade with strong reading skills that benefit not only in the category of reading but all of their academics.”

Breslin said in the coming school year, the district is focusing on the new Benchmark for Excellent Student Thinking standards in English Language Arts and math. She said the district is focusing on preparing and supporting students, their families and teachers for the implementation of the new standards.

Breslin said the district has offered training every week over the summer except for two weeks to help teachers and administrators prepare for the new standards.

“We’re all using the same materials, accessing the same standards and learning and growing together to build that collective efficacy,” Breslin said. “We’re going to see stronger results districtwide and have a level playing field for all our students to succeed.”

In East County, five schools dropped a grade in their ratings, two schools saw an increase in their ratings and nine schools maintained their ratings from previous years.

Ten East County schools have an A rating, three schools have a B rating and three schools have a C rating.

Grimes said Freedom Elementary School has been making steady progression to its A rating since he became principal. When he started at the school, it had a C rating.

He said when the 2021-2022 school year started, the staff established its values and specific academic goals.

The common thread among staff was the focus on relationships.

Grimes said building relationships gives staff an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and be there for each other as resources when someone needs help.

“It’s like you know each other’s hearts,” Grimes said. “If I did well, we celebrate together. If I’m not doing well, who’s my resource to help me. There’s no shame, there’s no blame. When you own something, you’re more willing to ask for help and receive help knowing that the help you get is going to benefit your children.”

In the 2021-2022 school year, Grimes and the staff focused on ensuring students were growing academically because they saw students in the school’s lowest quartile weren’t progressing.

They incorporated strategies in language arts and math classes to help the students who were struggling the most make gains in their academics. For example, Grimes said the school has a partnership with Acaletics, which is a math program to improve math achievement.

Students are grouped based on their abilities in math to work on their math skills. Every six weeks, they are evaluated again and moved to a different group based on their progress.

She said not consistently having the face-to-face teaching and attendance gaps due to testing positive, quarantining or any other reason caused students to fall behind.

Teachers saw students were catching up, but it wasn’t enough for the school to maintain its B rating.

“We accept our C,” she said. “We are proud of our C. We’re proud of the work that we’ve done. We’re proud of the work the kids have done, and we’re going to move forward.”

In the coming year as construction on the renovation and addition of the school is completed, ZenonRichardson said a newly renovated school will provide a great learning environment for students.

“We will continue our high expectations for all students and will continue identifying those gaps in learning,” she said. “We will also dig a little deeper into our students’ social and emotional learning needs

and make sure they have the skills and tools they need to be able to continue learning and moving along at the right pace.”

Zenon-Richardson said teachers and staff will focus on rigor, relevance and relationships as they maintain their high expectations, ensure learning is relevant to students’ experiences and build positive relationships with students.

The school also will provide more leadership opportunities for students to help them feel empowered and part of the school community.

Academically, the school will have a main focus on reading because it’s needed in every subject.

“We have a schoolwide approach to reading,” Zenon-Richardson said.

“Every subject, even our electives, participate in reading instruction or providing that opportunity for students to read, write, listen and speak in every single class. That is how students build their reading ability and learn from others with collaboration. They’re writing their thoughts and that kind of helps us understand their thinking.”

Although school grades can be a large factor for parents choosing schools, Breslin said parents also need to consider what else the schools have to offer such as school culture and climate, extracurriculars and programming.

were proficient in science. Grimes said this was a result of fifth grade teachers doing more hands-on science lessons with students and using WOZ Ed lessons, which are STEM lessons from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

In the coming year, Grimes said staff will look at data to determine what the school’s next specific goals will be, especially in language arts and math. Students will have extra time in class on language arts where students will be grouped based on reading abilities and matched with a teacher who can best help the student progress. In math, Grimes said many of the school’s third and fourth graders will be in advanced math where they will get all of the fourth grade math curriculum and half of the fifth grade math curriculum in one year.

Other schools, like Braden River Middle School, will be working to increase their school rating after seeing a drop this year.

Braden River Middle was rated a B in 2019 but fell to a C this year. Principal Kimberlain Zenon-Richardson said the rating wasn’t ideal but some students experienced significant learning losses during the two years since the last rating due to the pandemic.

It’s not a game show, or the lottery. This is simply people leaving their wallet on the clerk’s office floor.

They are owed money, and obviously, they don’t know it.

Unfortunately, the clerk’s office knows who they are, but they just don’t know where they are.

On July 26, the Manatee Clerk and Comptroller’s office released its annual unclaimed funds list.

Whether you believe it or not, the clerk’s office doesn’t want to keep your money. Really.

In all, it’s $28,251.21 that belongs to citizens who don’t have a clue their money is in peril. If not claimed by Sept. 1, all that money will be forfeited. The clerk’s office will then turn it over to the fine and forfeiture fund, which goes to the state.

Brandon Bunker, you’re losing $332.50 in a month. Chase Bank, you’ll be down $1,000. Of course, you probably have all the money you need. Emily Gay has $600 on the line.

Dylan Kuebler, you can probably do something fun with the $1,500 that you are owed. Renters Warehouse Florida is owed $3,890.

A lot of citizens are owed $15 for jury service not collected. Hey, pick it up and go to the movies.

“We put this out every year,” said Jennifer Linzy, Colonneso’s public information officer for the clerk’s office. “If you don’t collect by Sept.

1, the money is gone.”

The money owed is for the calendar year 2020 and it all is court-related funds. Linzy said the $28,251.21 is about the average amount unclaimed during a calendar year.

Linzy noted that all payments to jurors for their service or those owed court-related fees are paid by check, mailed to the address the clerk’s office has on file.

Funds become unclaimed when a check is returned to the clerk’s office or simply never is cashed. Perhaps that check went into the garbage

One of those reasons might be why the Palmetto Pines Golf Course didn’t pick up the $478.08 it is owed.

Or why Joseph Viverious hasn’t collected his $215.

Walgreens might not be interested in the $511.50 it is owed. Benrima Zimmerman has $220 on the line while Vincent Williams can pick up $200 if he so desires.

Once the funds go into the fine and forfeiture fund, the cash is out of the clerk’s hands.

Linzy said owed vendor payments are when vendors are hired by the clerk’s office for service and they never have cashed their check. She said court settlements are funds that end up in the unclaimed funds list. And whenever citizens are owed for making overpayments, a check is automatically paid to the person owed (unless the amount is for less than $10).

She also noted that checks mailed to customers with explanations are in English.

Linzy said it all shows the importance of keeping a good address on file with the clerk’s office, whether that means with your driver’s license, or through a voter registration or some

other form of identification.

For those wanting to claim their money, they should reach out to the clerk’s office at ClerkAccounting@ ManateeClerk.com. The person collecting must file a written request for the money and that request must be notarized. Linzy said the clerk’s office will help anyone with the procedure. The form must be returned by the Sept. 1 deadline.

That means you Arctic Air, if you want your $100, or Deborah Frey, if she wants to collect her $164.98, or Dilcia Montes, who has $500 on the line.

“We put a notice (in the media) and on our website,” Linzy said. “But it can be hard if you don’t know you have money owed to you.”

Linzy also said citizens can check FlTreasureHunt.gov in the search for other unclaimed funds, although those funds have no connection to the clerk’s office.

If elected, James Golden says literacy, employee compensation and continuity of education will be his focus.

Incumbent Golden faces two challengers

Tatem said he would work with other school board members to direct the district to make changes to the budget to ensure salaries solely come from the general fund.

“It might take a couple of years,” Tatem said. “It’s not something you can just snap your fingers and make happen.”

To ensure curriculum transparency, Tatem said parents and the community should have “maximum transparency on academic materials” such as class syllabi.

He said he wants to continue working with parents to determine what that transparency looks like in schools.

Tatem said school board members should set up regular meetings with the public and show up at events people would expect to see them, such as sporting events, the opening of new schools, and school advisory committee meetings.

As for the superintendent search, Tatem said he would look for someone with skills in leadership and management and someone who has experience in education and high ethical standards.

“I’m not promising a nationwide search, but I’m not against somebody who might show up who has the skills we would want in Manatee County,” he said.

hree East County residents are vying for the seat to represent District 5 on the School Board of Manatee County.

James Golden, the incumbent, is running for reelection

against Chantal Wilford and Richard Tatem.

Candidates talked about what their focus would be if elected, including their take on employee salaries, and the search for the School District of Manatee County’s next superintendent.

Here is what the candidates had to say.

JAMES GOLDEN

James Golden said his four years on the School Board of Manatee County, eight years on the Bradenton City Council and years of serving on boards for organizations and nonprofits make him the best candidate.

“I’m the best candidate to continue the level of civility, stability and continuity we want to achieve not just over the next four years but going forward as we serve the next generation of parents, learners and educators,” Golden said.

If reelected, Golden said he wants to focus on literacy, increasing employee compensation and ensuring there is continuity within public education over the years.

Golden said he wants to increase salaries for all employees including support staff, teachers, principals and administrators.

To pay for salaries, Golden said the district has to work with the funds available. Employee salaries are funded from the district’s general fund and a supplement through the 1-mill property tax referendum.

“Until and unless we change the perspective of the Legislature in Florida with respect to public education, we cannot reasonably expect to see changes,” Golden said. “If there are no changes to the legislation, then it is up to the imagination and innovation of local boards to try to be competitive in terms of offering fair compensation to all the elements of their districts.”

In addition, Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said she plans to retire when her contract expires June 30, 2023, which means the school board will have to search for the next superintendent.

Golden was not willing to say whether he would want the school board to conduct a national search because it’s a board decision, and he wants to discuss the matter with other board members.

Golden said he wants a superintendent who is committed to the district and will not use “the district to further their political ambitions.”

“I would want a superintendent that enjoys a favorable reputation amongst other superintendents,” Golden said. “I would want a superintendent who is fearless, who is not going to be swayed by every wind that blows or who is so inflexible they are afraid to use their imagination to

bring innovation into the district. I want someone who can keep us on an upward path under the superintendent we have risen from.”

If elected, Richard Tatem says he will focus on employee compensation, curriculum transparency and increasing school board members’ interaction with the public.

RICHARD TATEM

Richard Tatem wanted to continue to serve after he retired from the Air Force.

He said he looked at his skillset of leadership, management and academic experience and thought serving on the School Board of Manatee County would be a good fit.

“There are lots of people who have leadership experience and management experience and there are a lot of educators around, but I have the combination of all three of those,” Tatem said. “I understand the constitutional principles of America, and it’s important that public officials who take a constitutional oath understand what the constitution is about.”

Tatem said he would have what he calls “patriotic gratitude” if elected.

“It is the idea that I am grateful to the society I live in and to the citizens of that society for the opportunities I’ve had so far in my life,” Tatem said.

If elected, Tatem said his priorities will be making sure all employee salaries and benefits come out of the district’s general fund, ensuring curriculum transparency and increasing the school board’s interaction with the public.

If elected, Chantal Wilford says she’ll focus on literacy, recruiting and retaining teachers and expanding programming for students.

CHANTAL WILFORD

If elected to the School Board of Manatee County, Chantal Wilford said she wants to use her 14 years of experience homeschooling her children to bridge the gap between the homeschool community and the district as well as be a voice for students and teachers.

Her four children transitioned into the School District of Manatee County when they entered fifth grade.

If elected, Wilford said she wants to focus on literacy, recruiting and retaining teachers, and expanding programming for students.

Wilford said she hopes to increase reading scores and have more students reading at grade level by emphasizing the learning of phonics, giving teachers the ability to use programs they think will work better for students and encouraging students to read topics that interest them.

“To my mind, it doesn’t matter if that’s a Lego catalog or a comic book,” Wilford said. “If they’re reading, they’re reading. If they’re interested, they’re invested in that activity, and that’s how they’re going to learn.”

To address teacher retention and recruitment, Wilford said the district needs to conduct face-to-face exit interviews to learn why teachers are leaving. She would like veteran teachers to be paid more and have the years they were teaching in other counties or states to count toward their position on the pay scale in the School District of Manatee County.

“We are losing teachers who live here, who want to teach here because we don’t count their years when they’re not in Manatee County,” she said.

Although she supported the 1-mill referendum, Wilford said the district shouldn’t have salaries tied to the referendum.

“It’s extremely frustrating to have your salary determined every four years by a community vote,” Wilford said. “I’d like to see that change. I don’t know if that’s within the power of the school board because I know previous candidates have wanted to do the same thing and it hasn’t happened yet.”

With the potential for a new superintendent, Wilford said the school board should conduct a national search to find the next leader of the district.

“I think a national search does not preclude anyone local or at the state level,” Wilford said.

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

Perfect space for student’s career goals I f Karyn Cravens wanted her daughter, Kathleen, to pursue her dreams, she didn’t need to wish upon a star.

She just needed to show them off.

More than a decade ago, the elder Cravens helped set her daughter’s course by taking her out on the front lawn of their Cumming, Georgia home whenever something unusual was happening in the sky.

“My mom had a star tracking app,” said Kathleen Cravens, who now is a 17-year-old rising senior at Lakewood Ranch High School. “The app would send notifications when there were different star events, such as shooting stars. We would go out at 2 a.m. to watch a meteor shower.”

It wasn’t long before Kathleen began waking her mom up for that trip to the front lawn.

“I was the one who would ask to go,” she said. “I was fascinated by the stars.”

So fascinated that at 7 years old, Kathleen attended the Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

While many kids like to go to the fair to ride the Gravitron, where you spin so fast you stick to the walls when the floor drops out, Kathleen’s cup of tea was a zero gravity training device that prepares astronauts for a trip into space.

Call it sophisticated spinning.

She came out dizzy, tipsy and astounded.

“That definitely sparked my interest (in space),” she said.

As time progressed, Kathleen absorbed all she could about space, but her desire to be an astronaut gave way to another interest — building things.

“My parents called me ‘the little tinkerer,’” Kathleen said.

When those interests combined, she began to imagine working on rockets. It intensified when she got to Lakewood Ranch High as a freshman and joined the StellarXplorers

She also has pursued internships the past two years and just returned from a two-week internship — Student Enhancement in Earth and Space Science at the University of Texas’ Center for Space Research.

Students worked with scientists and engineers on projects that tasked them with doing research and collecting data. The program is sponsored by NASA’s Texas Space Grant Consortium.

More than 1,100 applications for the program were received and whittled down to the 92 students who were selected. The program actually started in May as students worked remotely with scientists until they arrived on-site in July.

When she was 7, Kathleen Cravens attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

fact experiments don’t always go as planned.

She worked on a weather balloon that was sent 1,000 feet into the atmosphere to test different types of technology. The balloon was supposed to collect data every 50 feet, in which it would stop for 45 seconds. However, the temperature that day was 105 degrees and the heat fried the technology being tested, plus the balloon ripped on the way down.

“We think it overheated,” she said.

Nonetheless, Kathleen and her team prepared a presentation that was given virtually to about 3,000 engineers and scientists.

Trial and error will be part of her life once she lands a job following college. She has just begun the application process and is inter-

ested in the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and Georgia Tech University.

Georgia Tech is ranked No. 2 in its aerospace program behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

While Kathleen, who lives in Country Club East, isn’t sure she eventually will land a job with NASA, she notes that “NASA hires mechanical engineers.”

Karyn Cravens isn’t worried her daughter won’t have options when she decides a career path to follow.

“She is a Renaissance girl,” said Karyn Cravens, who noted her daughter plays saxophone in Lakewood Ranch High’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz bands, and also is the goalie on the Mustangs’ lacrosse

team.

She might be one of Lakewood Ranch High’s most academically gifted students, but she has a tough streak as well. When she went out for her lacrosse team in junior high, most of the other girls on the team already had their positions. Nobody wanted to play goalie, so that’s what she decided to do.

Now during lacrosse season, “I am covered in bruises,” she said.

Kathleen, who started competing in robotics when she was 7, noted that if she doesn’t land a job in the aerospace industry, having a mechanical engineering degree can give her plenty of other options to satisfy her building desire.

“But I am pretty confident I want to work in the aerospace industry,” she said. “I think rocket propulsion is cool. It would be great to see a rocket that I worked on getting launched ... to see your work going up in space.”

And she still goes out on the front lawn to look skyward.

“There was a super moon a few weeks ago,” she said. “I went out and watched that about midnight. I thought it was really cool.”

If she does launch into an aerospace career, the moon isn’t likely to be the target.

“I like the whole concept of exploration,” she said. “It’s humanity pushing its limits. It the curiosity.

“There is going to be another space race. But it’s going to be Mars.”

The School District of Manatee County plans to purchase land from Schroeder-Manatee Ranch Taylor Ranch for a future elementary school.

The 20 acres of land is about 1.25 miles east of Bourneside Boulevard and adjacent to the extension of 44th E . Avenue East in East County.

“It keeps us in compliance with the growth that we are seeing in the county and ensuring parents are going to have a quality school, a quality building, a quality facility and quality staff,” Saunders said.

Mike Pendley, an executive planner for the School District of Manatee County, said from the Heritage Harbour community eastward and from south of the Manatee River to State Road 70, there are 12,214 dwellings approved that have yet to be built.

Pendley said there are 17,254 more dwellings in the entitlement process as well.

“It’s likely that would be at least another year, two years before they get all their approvals and are ready to pull permits,” Pendley said. “A lot can happen in that timeframe.”

Pastel postcard in time Six paintings by Enomoto Chikatoshi form the heart of a Ringling Museum exhibit that depicts a brief era before World War II.

hese six paintings have come across an ocean and across a continent, and collectively they represent a world that only existed for a brief moment in time. Perhaps most interestingly, this marks the first time that they’ve been shown together in the same place in about four decades.

Ballroom Florida, an exhibit at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, attempts to re-create the Jazz Age in Japan. The centerpiece of the display is a series of paintings

by Enomoto Chikatoshi that depict women who may have frequented the dance hall that lends the exhibit its title.

These works represented a diversion in the mores of Japanese art, which had famously portrayed women in traditional poses and outfits. But Chikatoshi painted contemporary women in Western garb as

glamorous, and he captured the brief moment of the Jazz Age in Japan.

Rhiannon Paget, curator for Asian Art at the Ringling Museum, says Chikatoshi’s paintings are an example of the Japanese art style of Bijinga, which depicts beautiful people.

“That’s a genre that goes back hundreds of years,” Paget says of Bijin-ga. “But what’s interesting about Enomoto Chikatoshi is rather than doing this kind of demure, oldfashioned women as a lot of his peers were doing, he made them fashionable. He put them in contemporary western clothes. He gave them bobs.

He made them look like they were doing cool stuff that modern women wanted to, representing kind of an aspirational lifestyle.”

Chikatoshi, while working in the ’20s and ’30s, was very much an artist of his time.

Because of the chaotic nature of the world at that point, it was a time that wouldn’t last.

and Paget says the scene would disappear as quickly as it emerged.

That makes Chikatoshi’s paintings more than just art; they’re historical postcards of a wrinkle in time.

“In the late 19th century, there was a period of really rapid westernization,” says Paget of Japan’s development. “By the 1930s, their relationships with a lot of Europe and America are getting [strained].

ernism. They’re setting their own natural identity, which means they can enjoy these westernized lifestyle aspects. Women are enjoying a lot more social freedom.

“They’re still very Japanese. They keep their own traditions and create new traditions. They’re quite nationalistic at this point of time.”

Paget says the women in the paintings were likely taxi dancers who worked at the ballroom and would dance with men for a fee.

Some of the women are depicted wearing jewelry. One of the women depicted appears to be a singer, and another sits next to a ticket booth as if she’s waiting to greet a customer.

The unifying element is that these are young people who are dancing to Western music quite similar to the way people did across the Pacific.

“It was the hottest place in town,” says Paget. “Then basically all the

clubs close within a short period of time. I don’t know if that was within a few weeks or months.

“It all came to an end. With the war effort, it was no longer deemed becoming of a good Japanese citizen on the homefront to be dancing to American jazz music.”

So what do we know about the people depicted in the paintings?

Paget stresses that the identities of the women in the paintings are not clearly known, but she’s able to make an informed guess about what life may have been like for them.

For women in Japan at this point in time right before World War II, there were limited options for working outside the home.

“This is not a job for a young woman of a good family unless she’s a complete rebel,” says Paget. “It’s like bar work. It does occupy quite an ambiguous territory.

“In a changing world, this offered a range of options to women who wanted to or had to support themselves. Maybe it was better than working as a waitress in a cafe. And maybe it wasn’t.”

Even the name of the club is a bit of an anachronism. You may wonder what exactly people in Japan knew about Florida in 1930, and the answer is probably not much.

The name Ballroom Florida came from a popular club in Paris, and Paget says it had a double meaning.

“It’s an idea of the exotic,” she says. “Why do you call it Ballroom Florida after a Parisian nightclub, which is named after Florida state?

“I think there’s an element of escape and glamour; it encourages the sort of Parisian chic and also this promise of a tropical world. There’s all these good things — what a great place to go and enjoy a night out.”

What else can we see from the paintings? Each of them is in the shape of a fan, but Paget says they wouldn’t have been used that way.

They were too large and unwiedly for that. In fact, the only way you could see these paintings was by looking up toward the heavens.

Paget says they adorned the ceiling

of a famous Tokyo hotel called the Meguro Gajoen until the mid-1980s, when they were taken down as part of a renovation project.

They were sold to a private art collector at that point, and later found their way to the Ringling’s collection.

The paintings had fallen out of favor.

But all these years later, they’re back in vogue.

“They went through a stage where these kinds of paintings of modern women were not fashionable in Japan,” says Paget. “They might’ve thought, ‘That is tacky. That is an abomination.’ They wanted to see beautiful women in kimonos.’

“But now, everyone would love to have these. But they can’t have them because we have them.”

The artworks, so precious and so rare, are on display through Sept. 25, and Paget says after that they will be placed back into storage for five years to preserve them.

That’s a necessary step because light can damage them over time.

Interestingly, these six paintings have not been displayed together since their time in Japan.

Paget said three of them were part of a touring exhibition in 2012, but to have seen all six of them together, you’d have to go back in time to Meguro Gajoen decades ago.

The paintings aren’t the only artifacts from Japan’s Jazz Age. Paget said the museum was able to acquire some of the actual tokens that taxi dancers would be paid with, and the exhibit also houses home furnishings that would’ve been part of the same era in Japan.

The exhibit also lists some of the American musical artists and songs that would have been played in Ballroom Florida during its brief reign as one of Tokyo’s leading hotspots.

The furnishings, which all come from a private collection in St. Petersburg, include lacquered boxes and vases, and there’s even a luxury metal smoking set from roughly the same time frame in Japan.

“These are not the kinds of things that would be on display in the dance hall. This is more like for the home,” says Paget of the furnishings. “I chose these particular pieces from the collection because they sort of tie in with some of the themes that you see with the Ballroom Florida.”

Here comes the Sun King Clay Robinson, co-founder of Sun King Brewing, isn’t just opening a new venue in Sarasota. He’s moving his family here to be a part of the craft beer community.

Sun King specializes in India pale ales, with nearly half of its 10 taps devoted to that style of beer.

One of its best sellers is a Mexican-style lager named Pachanga. Another notable standout is its Cherry Busey brew, a red ale aged with cherries.

From an orange vanilla cream ale to an amber ale, the brewery offers a variety of styles and Robinson says they look forward to continuing to experiment as they embrace their new Florida location.

lay Robinson took the direct route to building his own brewery. He started at the source.

Robinson is the co-founder of Sun King, Sarasota’s newest brewery, and he’s been working in beer his entire adult life. He started at Rock Bottom Brewery in his native Indiana at the age of 24, and a decade later, he wound up starting his own brewery with friend and colleague Dave Colt.

Sun King, opened in 2009, grew by leaps and bounds and eventually spawned another six locations.

Now, Robinson is sitting in the remodeled former JDub’s Brewing Co. location on Mango Avenue — which opened on July 22 — and he’s getting ready to move his life and his family from Indiana to Florida.

“My grandparents lived in Clearwater when I was a kid. So I spent a lot of time in Southwest Florida,” he says. “As an adult, coming down and seeing it again, the area’s beautiful.

Sarasota, in particular.

“As we started talking about our lives and our growth strategies, we realized that if we could open a brewery in Florida — which has been very welcoming and enjoys our beer — then we would have an opportunity to become part of the craft beer community and grow our presence in Florida. We’re Sun King. It’s the Sunshine State.”

His life never had to take this turn.

There were no frustrating evenings spent in his garage trying to perfect his process. Robinson learned the brewery business at Rock Bottom,

and he later moved to work at Ram Restaurant and Brewery in 2005.

That’s where he began working with Colt, and as they got to know each other better, they immediately started dreaming new dreams.

“At the end of our first week together, we were having a beer and the conversation started,” says Robinson. “‘What would you do if you could open your own brewery?’ That conversation lasted three years while we worked together. After three years of talking about it, we were working on some plans, talking with some chef and restaurant partners try-

ing to figure out how to do a brewpub. We realized that restaurants and breweries cost a lot of money to open, so we decided we didn’t want to be a restaurant and brewery; we just wanted to be a brewery.”

Things happened quickly for Sun King, which just celebrated its 13th anniversary. Robinson had quit his job, cashed in his savings and made a bet on himself.

His five-year goal was to brew about 5,000 barrels a year, and that came more quickly than expected.

Sun King went from 500 barrels in 2009 to 5,000 barrels in 2010,

and it kept on expanding by about 5,000 barrels a year. Robinson says Sun King now brews about 30,000 barrels a year, and he hopes his Florida location will eventually produce 5,000 barrels of its own.

“We went from four owners working 80 hours a week (in) year one, and today we have 60-plus full-time employees, and 100 and some parttime employees between seven locations,” Robinson says.

Sun King has some Florida employees helping to build the brand.

Joe Burns, the brewery’s vice president of sales, has lived in Sarasota for 20 years, and he previously worked for Cigar City in Tampa. Tim Marshall, Sun King’s head brewer in Florida, learned the business by brewing at Rock Bottom Brewery in Daytona. Despite all their brewing

experience, the location required some work.

Renovations to the former JDub’s facility included replacing drywall, resurfacing the bar and doing some heavy cleaning, including coating and repairing the concrete floors.

“Somebody who was here the other day was like, ‘You could eat off these floors.’ That’s the point,” Robinson says.

While the construction was happening, Robinson brought his wife, Staraya, and daughter, Zaya, down to frolic on Siesta Key. The trip was all they needed to rethink where they wanted to call home.

“We went back up to the Midwest in late spring and it was so cold,” says Robinson. “We were talking and my wife was like, ‘Do you think we could move to Florida?’”

So now, Robinson is in the midst of his move that shifts his entire life.

With a son due next month, everything is coming together for Sun King in Sarasota.

“We’re living with her parents right now, so we’ve got family support while my life is crazy with getting breweries open and doing all this,” he says. “It’s a lot of moving pieces.”

FLORA IMAGINARIA It’s a tour through the annals of photography to see how images of flowers have changed over the decades.

William A. Ewing, who literally wrote the book on the history of floral photography, revisits his work to survey how things have changed over the last 30 years.

Ewing is assisted in his examination by Swiss curator Danaé Panchaud, and the result is dozens of examples of artists expanding the palette of flowers in photos. This exhibit will run until Sept. 25 at Selby Gardens.

endall Latham, a junior counselor at Foundation for Dreams summer camp, loved seeing the smiles on the campers’ faces as they experienced the many activities.

Latham watched as campers splashed around and played games in the pool at Foundation for Dreams July 28 before they went canoeing.

“I love that the campers have opportunities they usually wouldn’t have been able to have,” Latham said. “I love to see them bond with new friends.”

Foundation for Dreams’ mission is to “celebrate the abilities and develop the comprehensive skill set of children with special needs and chronic illnesses.”

She called the event “beautiful” and said her family enjoyed “being outdoors, and being adventurous.”

Lakewood Ranch’s Ryan Stephenson said the farmers market has become a local “institution.”

“It’s such a nice, fun event,” said Waterside’s Alana Turner, who stops every Sunday to pick up treats for her dog.

She said the event is an excellent way for people of all ages to spend time together.

“It’s nice to see kids, older people, all these generations,” she said.

“I come here all the time,” said Mallory Park’s Kathleen Osterberg. “It’s nice to give back to the community, buy fresh produce instead of buying from stores, and give local farmers a chance.”

t’s been hot, and at the Lakewood Ranch Farmers Market at Waterside Place, it doesn’t seem to matter.

Both customers and vendors said the summer heat doesn’t keep them away now that the market is held year round.

“I’m going to be coming every week,” Riverwalk’s Justin Woods said on July 31.

Woods said one aspect of the event that appealed to him was the availability of German brötchen, or bread rolls, which he said he had been searching for since he grew up eating them for breakfast, and finally found at the Thomas German Bakery stand.

Jen Sekel, owner of Sweet B’s Flower Truck, said she had observed an impressive growth in the market since it moved from the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center parking lot last November.

“It’s been amazing to see,” she said.

She said other sites in Florida under construction include Orlando, Miami and Jacksonville. She also said there are currently plans to grow in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Middle East and Asia.

Lobdell said the restaurant’s founders, Tom Gordon and Greg Smart, are natives of Little Rock, Arkansas.

According to a video released by the company, the two founders met as friends in high school, where they spent “a lot of time out in the woods duck hunting and fishing.”

“They said they created the menu, the same one that exists today, by performing taste tests with other friends at home,” Lobdell said.

Customers can top off a meal with the jar desserts, which are layered treats including chocolate brownie pudding jar dessert, which is composed of chocolate pudding, Heath bar, brownie, and whipped cream.

Seasonal offerings include the strawberry cheesecake and pecan pie jars.

Major effort in minors Grant McCray is on a quest to reach the big leagues with the San Francisco Giants.

rant McCray’s professional baseball career began three years ago, in 2019, when he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and sent to Rookie League ball.

To McCray, now 21, high school baseball — in which he starred as an outfielder at Lakewood Ranch High — feels much longer ago than that, given everything that has happened in the world.

In strictly baseball terms, it has been shorter. The 2020 minor league season was canceled because of COVID-19 and McCray missed approximately three months at the start of the 2021 season with a UCL sprain in his elbow.

In 2022, the timing finally feels right.

McCray, the Giants’ No. 25 prospect according to MLB.com, is hitting .295 as of July 30 for the A-level San Jose Giants. His 15 home runs and 29 steals are the most on the team and his 49 RBIs are second behind shortstop Aeverson Arteaga’s 53. McCray’s .955 fielding percentage, mostly coming in centerfield, proves he’s more than just an offensive threat, too. He, and his organization, believe he can become a wellrounded player at the highest level of the sport.

For someone of McCray’s potential, waiting for his opportunity can be the most difficult part of the path to the major leagues. Thankfully for McCray, he has plenty of people in his life who are pushing him forward, most notably his father, Rodney McCray, who spent nearly a decade

in the minor leagues before earning 14 major league at-bats with the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets.

Grant McCray said his father, who became known for running through the outfield wall while attempting to make a catch during a game against the Portland Rockies, has advised him to not think about call-ups at all.

You do that, Grant McCray said, and you lose sight of your current responsibilities, which are to help your team win and to be the best player you can be, wherever you might be. In other words, control what you can control and forget about the rest.

“Growing up around minor league baseball, I knew what to expect when I got here,” McCray said. “The hardest thing wasn’t the baseball or the travel, it was learning how to interact with my teammates. There are some cultural differences, like with guys from Latin American countries.

I had to learn how they play and how to talk with them.”

Right now, the place McCray finds himself is A-ball, a location he took to right away. Even though the start

of 2021 season was derailed by injury, he finished strong, and that success has carried him ever since. This year in particular, McCray is focused on feeling comfortable.

“I’m trying to be as minimal effort as possible at the plate,” McCray said. “When I try too hard I strike out too much. I need everything to be as easy as possible. A lot of that is mental, but I did make make a small technical change as well. My hands are now a little more upright.”

It’s working. McCray had a goal of five home runs this year; he’s already tripled that. He has also put an emphasis on steals, though that is for a more lighthearted reason.

He and his offseason trainer, Sarasota’s Jason Riley, have a friendly bet on whether McCray can reach the 50-steal mark. If he does, McCray will get a few free sessions out of it.

Even though McCray is technically a professional — he’s getting paid to play baseball, after all — he said it does not feel like that to him. There have been moments where things felt right, like McCray’s first at-bat for the San Jose Giants, which came Aug. 20, 2021 and saw him send hit a homer. But even those moments are only satisfying for a fleeting second. There is only one Giants team he dreams of playing for — and those Giants play in San Francisco, not San Jose.

McCray said his contact with his former Lakewood Ranch friends and teammates is infrequent. He simply doesn’t have time to think about much beyond his baseball life, and most of his teammates are now out of the game. It’s one of the sacrifices McCray has had to make in his quest to be the best.

Summer trip will lead to falls Fifteen Mustang wrestlers attend Ohio State camp to refine their technique.

Columbus. Loynd said he bought an Ohio State bucket hat as a memento (and a fashion piece).

“It was great as a team-building exercise,” King said. “I feel like we are now all on the same page as far as techniques go. It’s not one person learning something, it’s all of us learning together, so we’re able to practice better together (back at Lakewood Ranch). We have a talented group, and we are going to be ready to go for next season.”

The camp is paying dividends.

Loynd, King and other Mustangs participated in the Bradenton Brawl event held July 23 at Bayshore High. Loynd finished first in the 126-pound division. King finished fourth in the 170-pound division (pretty good, considering last high school season he wrestled two weight classes lower at 152 pounds).

He’s still getting his body used to his new weight class.

Lakewood Ranch is holding 90-minute open mat sessions throughout the summer to keep the progress going. A number of the program’s wrestlers have eyes on competing in the annual Super 32 Challenge event in North Carolina on Oct. 15-16. It is one of the premier high school wrestling events in the country. A Super 32 qualifying event will be held Sept. 9-10 in Kissimmee.

You can bet that the Mustangs will be using their newfound skills and mentality to give themselves the best shot at qualifying.

he Ohio State University wrestling team — perennially one of the nation’s best programs — had eight athletes qualify for the 2022 NCAA Tournament in March.

This month, the Buckeyes hosted a different kind of team — Lakewood Ranch High.

The Mustangs traveled to Columbus, Ohio, for a Buckeyes training camp July 10-13. Mustangs Wrestling Coach Pat Ancil said he has been friends with Buckeyes Coach Tom Ryan for 15 years after reaching out to him on a whim via email. The two bonded over being from Ohio and a mutual love of wrestling, not just the sport but what it can do for competitors off the mat, helping them become well-rounded people.

Over the years, Lakewood Ranch has hosted Ryan for clinics and occasionally brought a group to Ohio State for more intensive work with Ryan and his Buckeye wrestlers. This was one of those years as 15 Mustangs made the trip to Columbus.

It was eye-opening.

Rising senior Wyatt Loynd, who plans to wrestle at 126 pounds, said the camp alternated between teaching techniques and live wrestling.

Sometimes the live wrestling meant getting on the mat with some of the Buckeyes’ top athletes. Even Ryan got in on the action. It made an impression.

“The thing I noticed was how good those guys are at picking up on your mistakes,” Loynd said.

“Whenever they scored on me during the live sessions it was because I tried to score on them. They’re so good on the counterattack.”

Loynd said he is trying to be a

more patient wrestler thanks to that experience. He also said the camp helped him improve his riding techniques. It was already something Loynd was working to improve, he said, and the camp only accelerated that growth.

Rising senior Cody King had a different takeaway. King, who is wrestling at 170 pounds, said that the techniques he learned — like refining his low single leg takedown — will definitely be going into his repertoire, but it was seeing how the Ohio State wrestlers approached their craft mentally that made the biggest impact on him.

“They go out there with the mentality that they are not just going to win, but dominate,” King said.

“They do everything to the best of their ability, even this camp. They were not taking it easy on us. They did not want to have some high schoolers come into their house and score on them.”

While that desire to dominate is certainly important to the Buckeyes’ success over the years, their approach to the mental side of wrestling does not stop there. Both Loynd and King said Ryan and other Buckeye coaches talked to them about the importance of putting wrestling first in everything they do. The food they eat, the activities they partake in, the people they surround themselves with. If those things are not helping them become the best wrestlers they can be, they should cut them out of their lives. It might sound extreme, but you don’t get to become a title-contending NCAA Division I wrestler by being average.

It was four days of intense work, but the Mustangs still found time to have fun together. They went out to eat each night, Loynd said, and even found time to rent electric scooters and ride them through downtown

Dalmau threw a perfect game July 25 in the Florida Burn Tampa National travel team’s 8-0 win over the Mid Atlantic Show at the 2022 Perfect Game 14U National Championships, held July 20-27 in Hoover, Alabama.

When did you start playing baseball?

At 5 years old. I have two older cousins (Enrique Santa Maria and Alex Santa Maria) who were playing it.

They would keep telling me to try it.

What is the appeal to you?

I would say just being out on the field. It is like an escape to me. When you’re out there, there’s nothing to worry about except having fun.

What is your best skill?

Pitching. I am left-handed so pitching was always something I could see myself trying.

What is your best pitch?

My changeup is my best pitch for sure. It dives away from righthanded hitters. I utilize it to get outs when I need them most.

What have you been working to improve?

I have been trying to get bigger and stronger for my freshman high school season. I will be playing for Cardinal Mooney and I want to make sure I am ready right away.

What is your favorite memory?

It is when I was 10 and I played in the USSSA All-America Games at the organization’s Space Coast Complex in Viera. I started the championship game and threw five shutout innings and got the game’s MVP.
