Main Street offers side of culture Palmetto’s Yajahira Galindo, who came to the United States from Mexico in 2004 at the age of 14, has long had a passion for helping others learn about her culture. During a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch, she had the perfect platform. In the street in front of Casa Maya Mexican Restaurant, Galindo performed songs from the mariachi genre which originated in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. She said often music played during Cinco de Mayo consists of Latin American styles such as salsa, bachata, or merengue, and that some shows have no Mexican music at all. Her performance included dancing and attire associated with mariachi — colorful dresses from the city of the capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara. “I feel what I sing, and probably someone else can feel it too,” she said.

Schools finds harmony with student in charge Gene Witt Elementary second grader Harmony Johnson (above with Beckett Johnson) found out what it means to be in charge. In this case, her hard work as a student earned her the right to take control April 27. She followed Principal David Marshall around as Principal for the Day, overseeing all aspects of the school, even the air conditioning and electrical systems. She visited classrooms and was able to see what her teachers and staff were doing. Beckett Johnson, a student in pre-K, served as Assistant Principal for the Day. “I liked when I visited classrooms,” Harmony Johnson said. “I enjoyed seeing what the kids were doing and what the subject was, and I learned a little bit more, too.”
