Aloha to education Robert E. Willis Elementary School students lined up in back of the school May 25 with leis around their necks, waiting for the guest of honor. Rhonda Mau, the assistant principal, was shocked to see the hundreds of students chanting her name as she drove around in a decorated golf cart with Principal Katherine Price during the “Luau for Mau” celebrating Mau’s retirement. Mau retired May 26 after spending 23 years in education, including two at Willis Elementary School. “It was definitely surprising,” Mau said. “It was amazing. It couldn’t be a better send-off.” Price (above left, with Mau) said Mau wanted a “low-key” retirement celebration, and a drive around the back of the school with all the students was as “low key as they could make it while still having fun.” “It’s hard (to say goodbye),” said Price.

Despite calendar, summer’s here It’s not quite summer, but most preschools and schools are out, and children are finding ways to enjoy their vacation. Summerfield 4-year-old Giulia Basher (squatting in photo), 5-year-old Nolan Basher and 4-year-old Amelia Putianto finished their semester at Little Ranchers Learning Center and were enjoying Summerfield Park. They were waving sticks as if they were swords and climbing on the playground equipment. Moms Mona Putianto and Alessandra Basher took the kids to the park. With school out, Alessandra Basher said she is glad Lakewood Ranch has lots of fun parks. She said she has been to them all because her kids love to be around other kids. After the kids finished playing at Summerfield Park, it was off to get ice cream.
