Dog-gone cute Allie Menendez (above), a veterinary technician at Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue, helped prepare a litter of 10 puppies in need of a foster home. The puppies came in Feb. 2 in the afternoon and were placed in a foster home the next morning. Rob Oglesby, director of development for the rescue, gave a shout-out to both the rescue’s workers and the foster homes. “Puppies have low immune systems just like little babies,” he said. “By staying in a home, they stay healthy and safe.”

Veggie love Tara Elementary School fifth-grader Carsyn Evans remembers when, as a 5-year-old, her mother told her not to play with her food. But with her friend Ava Kozmits, they created a farm-themed display Feb. 1 out of fruits and veggies. They used a tomato to make a pig and cauliflower and blueberries to make lambs. “I like how it’s made out of playing with your food. It’s art,” Carsyn said. Technology Student Association students at Tara participated in the School District of Manatee County’s “Play with Your Fruits and Vegetables Contest.” Tara was among 16 participating schools.
