Pick a ‘Buddy’ poppy Retired Army Col. Gill Ruderman (above) of Greenfield Plantation will be among the members of Braden River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12055 who will be collecting donations and handing out VFW “Buddy” poppies 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at Lakewood Ranch Publix stores. The poppies signify a poem written by the late Col. John McCrae dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. who served, fought and died in France during World War I. Proceeds go to charitable programs that benefit veterans.

Candy comeback Local dentist Dr. Oscar Hernandez wants to help children have healthy teeth and give military troops overseas something sweet to enjoy. On Nov. 1-2, he bought back Halloween candy — for $1 per pound, up to 5 pounds per child — and had children visitors to his east Parkwood Dental office write letters to deployed military. The candy collected was sent to troops via Operation Shoebox.
