Time to trot out improvements Safer fields, more spectator amenities are on the way.

ames and Misdee Miller, the owners of the 158-acre Sarasota Polo Club, were talking dirt.

Well, at least James was talking dirt.

He was sitting inside the clubhouse, looking a bit anxious as workers were busy outside preparing for the Dec. 2 season opener.

“Here in Florida, it’s a harsh environment on everything,” he said. “Turf is no exception. And you have insects, disease, weeds.

You are trying to maintain an ideal surface as difficult as a golf course. You need to know what the ground is like below the roots ... it’s the most important thing for horses, because it gives stability when they take a step.”

He went rapid fire into other dirt-related subjects.

“You have to keep track when the armyworm arrives,” he said.

“They start as a moth, then they fly into the turf and go subterranean. We have people monitoring the field on a daily basis. There are good nematodes and bad nematodes.”

Across from James, Misdee sat quietly, and finally interjected.

“You see what my life has become?” Misdee said with a smile. “That’s why I begged him not to do it. It’s going to be a lot of heavy lifting over several years.”

The “it” was buying the Sarasota Polo Club in June from Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

Misdee was afraid buying the Sarasota Polo Club would turn her husband’s love of polo into a grind.

She took a big sigh.

“He is an expert on how roots grow,” she said, nodding.

Whatever side Misdee took before the decision was made, it’s obvious she is fully on board now.

She talks about the difference the two of them can make.

“We have the opportunity to create a world-class equestrian facility in one of the nicest cities in America,” she said. “It would be an amazing legacy.”

would take more than $1 million to get it into exceptional condition. That was just the fields, not the rest of the property. In the end, he said time and effort were even a tougher investment he simply didn’t want to make.

The Millers thought they would be one of the few buyers who would stay the course.

“People involved in equestrian sports often are preservationists,” James Miller said. “We have been involved in preserving the art of horsemanship. It came time for someone to shepherd this club into the next era.”

He said SMR had built a topnotch facility and maintained it well for years. However, as the fields aged, he said SMR didn’t have the expertise to keep it rolling.

The Millers, meanwhile, own the 1,400-acre Hillcroft Farm in Paris, Ky., where they anchor their polo operations along with saddlebred and thoroughbred breeding. They also grow crops such as soy beans, corn, wheat and alfalfa.

James Miller is an accomplished polo player who competes worldwide and also is the president of Lexington (Kentucky) Polo Club.

Misdee Miller is a world champion in saddlebred show horses and is one of the world’s most accomplished competitors in pleasure driving and combined driving.

They love horses.

They also love the Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota areas, once James’ love of polo brought them to the area in 2006.

“He was a fun guy, and we built a farm together,” Misdee Miller said. “But he was looking to play polo in Sarasota. He brought me down and put me up at the Ritz.

I was sold. We love this community.”

They bought their family home at the Country Club and bought two properties in the Polo Club for their horses.

their new project.

One improvement was spending $500,000 on a new threequarter of a mile training track that is 25 feet wide. He said the old track, for the horses, was like training in a sand pit.

He made improvements to the stalls in the barn areas, changed the mowers from rotary mowers to reel mowers and hired a polo turf expert to assess the fields.

“The good news is we have managed to drastically improve the root system,” he said. “The root system is more than double.

We’ve made other improvements, but we don’t want to bother the public about what goes on behind the scenes.”

A major goal is to enhance the experience for the spectators.

“We want to make the spectator experience second to none,” Misdee Miller said. “We want to build a spectator pavilion, and as a woman, I want to redo this clubhouse so it is a little more upscale.

We want to make this the place to be on a Sunday afternoon, and maybe a Friday evening. Eventually we would like to build an allweather stadium.”

James Miller said, as a player, he finds performing in Sarasota to be on a par or better than any of the top polo clubs in the world.

“Here, it’s like a green beach.

You back up, open the trunk, pull out the dogs, the chairs and the kids. You are in the sun having fun. Families are looking for something different. Here, a herd of horses comes by. Whoa!

School superintendent search takes a turn School board members might reverse their decision to prevent the interim superintendent from applying for the full-time position.

After making sure Cynthia Saunders, the School District of Manatee County’s interim superintendent, had a clause in her contract that said she couldn’t apply for the full-time position, school board members may have changed their minds.

Board Chairman Scott Hopes said his board should remove the stipulation she can’t seek the full-time job as early as the Dec. 11 board meeting.

Hopes said the district faces the risk Saunders will pursue other positions if they don’t act.

He said Saunders has proven she would be a strong candidate for the full-time job.

Hopes said it was insulting to even have the clause in her contract, which was signed in July after Diana Greene left to become superintendent of Duval County schools.

“We have new schools to open,

a new budget process and new administrators to hire,” Hopes said. “I believe Cynthia Saunders is more than capable of continuing to lead the school district and to get a new budget in place. My recommendation is that we need continue to stabilize the entire district, so existing management should be maintained.”

Saunders was the deputy superintendent of curriculum before she accepted the interim superintendent’s job.

School board member Dave Miner supported putting the clause into Saunders’ interim contract that she could not seek the permanent job, but he said he is willing to listen if his fellow board members want to remove the clause.

“I think Cynthia is doing a good job under these circumstances.

At the same time, I don’t know if we’re ready to go forward with her on a long-term contract,” Miner said. “I‘m flexible. I led the charge that said she should not be allowed to apply (for the full-time job), but I certainly have been very impressed.

“She is a very good person, but we are focused on doing whatever is best for the district, and she understands that,” said Miner.

Miner said he expects to make a decision with the rest of the board in January.

New to the discussion will be

school board member the Rev. James Golden, who was sworn in Nov. 20 after beating John Colon in the primary election. Golden said he is concerned about finding a superintendent who could unify the district.

“We are in the midst of a serious transitional phase at the board and administrative levels,” Golden said. “I would not want that process to get skewed because of a predetermined disposition of anyone, including myself, on who the new superintendent should be.”

School board member Charlie Kennedy said he would not publicly comment on the issue.

Hopes is hoping to organize a board retreat early in December to bring in experts to talk to the board about their best course of action in finding a new superintendent.

Saunders said it would be inappropriate for her to comment whether she would be interested in pursuing the permanent superintendent’s position. She noted she was focused on her day-today duties and wasn’t concerned about the board’s actions to possibly alter her contract.

“My energy and focus is fully on carrying out the duties of being the current superintendent of the School District of Manatee County,” she said through the district’s public information department.

Passed referendum causes concern Parents, some school board members wonder about the future of single district voting.

fter absorbing the aftermath of a referendum, passed by voters Nov. 6 during the general election, East County residents are worried about their ability to have an adequate voice on the School District of Manatee County board.

The referendum restricts voters to only selecting the board member who represents their particular district. The board has five members who each represent one of five districts. Voters have been selecting all the board members.

The new system goes into place in 2020.

The Rev. James Golden was sworn in this month after defeating John Colon in the primary.

He represents District 5, which includes much of Lakewood Ranch.

Voting for just one school board member in the 2020 election may be a tough adjustment for some parents.

ultimately hurt her child’s education.

“I’m disappointed that it passed,” said Patterson. “I just feel that we should all have a vote because they all make decisions for our schools and our tax dollars.”

Tara Bergstrom Merino, a parent of a Robert Willis Elementary student, said she isn’t sure the referendum’s passing will be a

good thing for the district.

“Given that the school board votes collectively to make decisions for all schools in the community, I valued the ability to vote on each member,” she said.

She said only being able to pick one voice on the board will be a problem.

“That member will not have the ability to make any decisions for (his or her) allocated zone without

the agreement and support of the full board. I appreciate that this will reduce the campaign effort and cost for candidates, which will hopefully make it feasible for additional qualified candidates to run, but I’m not sure that gain outweighs the loss of voice to our voters.”

The school board referendum vote was added to the ballot after support from school board member Charlie Kennedy and Dave Miner. School board member Gina Messenger voted against having the referendum on the ballot for the 2018 election.

“Proponents of this seem to believe it would stop special interest money from coming into the campaigns of those running for the school board,” said Messenger. “I don’t believe single districts will stop those things from happening. But the people have spoken, so I’m moving forward to accept it.”

Golden wonders whether his district will have its lines redrawn as the population continues to increase faster than the rest of the county.

“Our district is so big and expanding even farther out east,” he said. “The largest population growth is District 5. I wonder whether or not our district might get smaller.”

A district with the smallest population will have the same power on the board as the district with the highest population.

Golden said, philosophically, he

does not agree with only having one district vote on each school board member because all the members make decisions on the school district as a whole. However, he said the people have spoken.

Kennedy said the new system will help in future elections.

“There will more grassroots campaigns for candidates to run,” he said.

Candidates can concentrate on campaigns in their own districts, as opposed to trying to impress voters on the far side of the county, which can be more expensive.

Kennedy disagrees with the argument voters should be allowed to vote for all board members who make decisions that affect their children.

“Schools are funded based on need,” he said. “This is more about campaigns. The school board members races won’t be decided on who has the most money in their campaigns.”

Miner said he is glad it passed.

“Countywide elections discourage good candidates because it’s very difficult and expensive for a candidate to have a credible campaign without taking a good deal of money from their own pocket or having a developer fund them,” Miner said. “That’s a political advantage that I have because I am known throughout the whole county.”

ick, tock, what about that clock?

After a visit to San Marco Plaza in Lakewood Ranch, Evan Guido’s focus turned to its clock tower, and to the fact the

clock didn’t work.

Now, the Lakewood Ranch businessman is hoping to do something about it.

On Nov. 16, Guido opened his new financial advising company, Aksala (pronounced Ox-sala) Wealth Advisors, at 8225 Natures Way, Suite 119. And Nov. 30, he is slated to close on the purchase of the base of the clock tower, which is located at the plaza’s center and is its focal point.

“It’s part of the community,” Guido said of the clock tower. “I

would like to make the bells ring again.”

Guido will not own the clock tower, which will sit on the 200-square-foot base he owns.

Guido said everything above the ceiling of the base belongs to the San Marco Condominium Association and maintenance responsibilities for the tower fall on the association.

He said it is written in the association’s bylaws that it maintains the clock in working order, so he hopes he can help move that goal

Buying the base wasn’t easy. In talking with other condo owners, he learned it was a quagmire of back taxes, condo association dues and ownership records that went from one corporation to the next. Guido persisted with the help of his attorney, Carly Lambert, and the pair tracked down the property’s owner and negotiated a cash purchase of $20,000 plus the other money owed, close to another $20,000.

The property is owned by JLAWAB LLC, which has a registered agent, Janice Appel, daughter of the plaza’s co-developer Stanley Appel. Stanley Appel ventured with businessman Gary Moyer to build the $21 million plaza. It opened summer 2007 and was to

be anchored by the Golden Apple Dinner Theater, which went out of business in Sarasota in March 2013.

Theater owners Bob Turoff and his wife, Roberta MacDonald, had purchased the space with plans to open a second location, but the 250-seat theater in Lakewood Ranch was never built out.

Observer newspaper archives show an initial 2005 tenant list for the plaza to include “The Shop Under the Clock.”

Guido said he had been told the tower was intended, at one time, to be the theater’s ticket office.

He said owning the base of a clock tower is just one of his many harebrained ideas. He likes the idea of his children — Hudson, Savannah and Olivia — saying, “Remember when Dad …?”

There are logistical challenges for making the clock tower function from a business perspective.

It is located at the plaza’s center, within what would be a median for a roundabout with no pedestrian path around it, beside a vehicular travel lane.

Guido said he thinks the space is still usable and has been brainstorming for potential uses. A few ideas are a display for builders or local nonprofits, a valet or a docking station for a bicycle rideshare program.

“Ideas keep floating,” he said.

“I don’t have a peer group to talk about clock towers with.”

Ultimately, Guido said he hopes it can become something other than a defunct building with a nonfunctioning clock.

“What does Lakewood Ranch want it to be?” Guido said. “I don’t know what it ends up. But if it drives traffic back to San Marco, everybody wins.”

Many said: ‘You’re nuts’

When we launched in 1998, there were 650 residences in Lakewood Ranch. Twenty years later, there are nearly 14,000. Who’s nuts?

pring 1998: Our Observer company had just celebrated its third year in business. One of our advertising executives, Bob Lewis, a longtime resident of Sarasota who previously operated his own advertising agency in Sarasota and Manatee counties, told my father-in-law and me we should look east.

“You should have a paper there,” Lewis said.

It took some coaxing, but Lewis persuaded us to get out of our office on Gulf of Mexico Drive on Longboat Key and ride with him around the areas bordering the east and west sides of Interstate 75 between State Road 64 and University Parkway.

We had no idea of the extent of the home building, nor a clue of what was to come.

From what we saw out the car windows, there wasn’t much.

A lot of open space. This young development called Lakewood Ranch had a nice sales center at its entryway on University Parkway and the proverbial new Publix Super Market (always a sign that the experts know what’s coming). But when you traveled farther east, the picture became clearer.

Lewis introduced us to Schroeder-Manatee Ranch and Lakewood Ranch. “This is all going to be new homes,” he said.

Even so, at that particular moment, it made little sense to start a newspaper. There weren’t enough people or businesses that would advertise to support it. At the end of 1997, there were only 610 residential units in Lakewood Ranch. When you reached Lorraine Road on University Parkway, you thought you had reached the end of civilization.

But on Nov. 4, 1998, we launched the East County Observer.

Many people thought we were nuts.

In a way, we were. At the time, we were publishing the Longboat Observer and two other startup publications: the Gulf Coast Business Review (now the Business Observer) and Black Tie magazine.

Smarter business people would feign from taking on a third startup at once. But there was just something too alluring about what was to be in East Manatee County. Growth forecasts projected residential units in Lakewood Ranch growing to

7,220 by 2010. This was the new frontier of growth.

So starting a newspaper and being the first dedicated solely to covering Lakewood Ranch and East Manatee County presented a rush of pioneering excitement.

“Everyone tells me this was a great move,” I wrote to our board of directors then. “They say in five years, the East County Observer should be as big or bigger than the Longboat Observer.”

It was a good move. It took us five years to reach the same revenue size that it took the Longboat Observer 16 years to reach. Today, the East County Observer is the largest paper by circulation — 23,100 — of our four weekly Observers in this region (Longboat, Sarasota, Siesta Key).

What’s more, our distribution in the Lakewood Ranch area is almost eight times greater than each of the two dailies’ subscribers.

And Lakewood Ranch itself is close to having doubled the 2010 forecasts, with nearly 14,000 housing units and about 27,500 population in the two Lakewood Ranch ZIP codes alone.

It’s hard to believe, almost shocking, to realize that 20 years has passed since the start of the East County Observer.

And indeed, it has been exciting to be an intimate observer and reporter of how this region has grown and become the tightknit community that it is.

Much of the East County region’s identity can be attributed to the vision and execution of the leaders of SchroederManatee Ranch. They created Lakewood Ranch — the community and the brand. It may be east of downtown Bradenton and Sarasota, but it is a force of equal, and one day likely to have greater stature. Credit first goes to the late Mary Fran Carroll, founding CEO of Lakewood Ranch and CEO of its owner, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

Carroll was a trust banker from Northern Trust in Chicago recruited in the mid-1980s to turn the Uihlein family’s 26,000 acres of ranch and mining into a profitable business. She often told the story of how she sat in a meeting of the Ranch directors — all descendants of Schlitz brewing company in Milwaukee — and told them they faced a choice: Either develop their property or lose it to the development of a new airport.

Carroll envisioned more than a planned development. She wanted to create a community.

And that’s what she and her team did.

Carroll and her successors, first John Clarke and now current CEO Rex Jensen, painstakingly controlled every detail in the growth of Lakewood Ranch — what was developed where, when and how. Jensen told the

Observer in 2014 after Carroll’s death, the success of Lakewood Ranch can be attributed in great part to Carroll’s insistence on quality. And you can clearly see that.

You can say this about Lakewood Ranch: Since 1995, the time home sales began, the development and growth of Lakewood Ranch has been the most significant, most positive, and most transformational socio-economic contribution in the region. It was not just the vision and work of SMR, but also because of the people who live, work, play and worship in Lakewood Ranch and its nearby communities.

“Ranchers” exude a sense of pride and camaraderie. You especially see this in the charity that overflows for a Ranch resident in need; in the spirit for the schools; in the hordes of people lining Main Street cheering at the annual Memorial Day parade; and in the enthusiasm in the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, the 650-member organization that feels more like a tight-knit family than a business association.

As “observers” of all that goes on in Lakewood Ranch and East County, even 20 years into this, we still enjoy the rush as much today as we did in the beginning: of telling your unique stories; introducing you to the people making a difference; reporting the news; and connecting our advertisers with our readers.

We see ourselves in the same business as Mary Fran Carroll envisioned with Lakewood Ranch: building a community.

Indeed, our company’s mission statement embraces that goal: “To inspire our communities with extraordinary local content, and to help our partners prosper.”

We remain as determined today as we were 20 years ago.

We can’t wait to see what the next 20 years will bring, and we intend to be there whenever and wherever it happens.

DID YOU KNOW? Before the launch of the East County Observer, owner and CEO Matt Walsh took a vote of the staff on what to call the paper, East County Observer or Lakewood Ranch Observer. Walsh voted for Lakewood Ranch Observer, but was outvoted. The staff (Walsh says “wisely”) thought Lakewood Ranch Observer would be too limiting for the area that was to be covered. Walsh thought Lakewood Ranch eventually would be an incorporated city.

“They were right, I was wrong,” Walsh said.

the area faced an entirely different set of challenges.

Observer Sales Executive Bob Lewis remembered driving through Lakewood Ranch in 1998 with CEO Matt Walsh and Chairman David Beliles. “God, this looks awful,” is what Lewis remembered the general consensus to be early in the ride. “There was nothing but cattle all over the place and old roads.”

By the end of the trip, though, they realized it was going to be a thriving community in the near future, and one that would attract residents from farther away to the north, and not those sliding into the area from Bradenton or Sarasota.

“If a newspaper can get into a new community, it can make a big impact,” Lewis said. “People will feel it is their newspaper.”

Those people are you, and the East County Observer is your paper. We’ll work hard to make sure it stays that way.

Much of this has happened in three years. Are these dog years?

The concern, as the East County Observer buzzes past its 20th anniversary and forges into its next 20, is that somehow all of this becomes paradise lost.

On top of everything else, we do have growing pains.

However things evolve, the East County Observer will be here to report the pros and cons

had arrived in paradise.

It was my first day in Lakewood Ranch in September 2015 and as I drove down Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, my head swiveled to look off both sides of the street, taking in the pretty lakes — more snobby types might call them retention ponds — and every kind of bird imaginable.

I pulled on Lakewood Main Street, and no one was there.

Not a car, not a worker, nobody.

It was about 8:30 a.m. and I had my choice of parking places along the street. I popped out of the car and heard the sounds of Frank Sinatra wafting through the air. Somebody knew I was coming.

It was charming, peaceful, and the place to be, even though no one was there. Yes, I worship at the alter of Yogi Berra.

And it was just over three years ago.

So much has happened in the time that has passed since I became managing editor of the East County Observer, but besides more traffic on Lakewood Ranch Speedway (Boulevard), most things remain the same, or in many cases, even better.

akewood Ranch resident Sybil Porter understands grief and how difficult it can be to negotiate the holidays while carrying such a burden.

Porter’s granddaughter, Payton Wright, died at age 5, on May 29, 2007, of a cancerous tumor.

“We miss her all the time, but we miss her on the holidays even more,” said Porter, who is a member of Harvest United Methodist Church in Lakewood Ranch. “The holidays always bring up (the question), ‘What would she being doing now, what would she like?’”

Porter was asked last December by the Rev. Michael Pestel to organize a grief service called the Hope and Healing Worship Gathering. The event was a success, and Pestel announced the service will be held for the second time at 6 p.m. Dec. 12.

“We know people don’t look forward to the holiday season because they’ve lost children, a spouse or whatever,” Pestel said.

“This service helps them with that.”

Sometimes the service just allows people to release their emotions, especially those who recently have lost loved ones.

“We’re not saying goodbye forever, just goodbye for now,” Pestel said.

“It’s OK to be broken,” she said.

“It helps to be together with people having the same issues. This year, we’re going to have handprints made out of basal wood.

People can write (names of lost loved ones) on the hands, and we’ll make it into some sort of collage. There will also be a lighting of the candles, and possibly writing down sentiments during the service. All of that helps people release how they’re feeling.

Just the right touch Lakewood Ranch massage therapist says Nurturing Touch program has multiple benefits for young children.

inding River resident Stacy Norkin followed the directions, which in this case meant running her fingers down the spine of her 6-monthold daughter, Ava. Infant massage instructor Patricia Cadolino modeled the stroke on a doll, and Norkin and others attending a class at the downtown Central Library in Bradenton followed suit. Called Nurturing Touch, the infant massage program typically consists of a series of light strokes.

Cadolino stroked the doll’s chest, making a heart shape with her fingertips, as she talked about how to correctly complete the motion while explaining the benefits of touch.

“From the top of the head all the way to the bottom of the feet makes the baby feel neurologically connected,” Cadolino said.

“Massage is a very special bonding.”

Norkin wanted to learn about touch therapy because she and her husband, Ian, want Ava to sleep through the night.

“I want to try a new bedtime routine,” Norkin said. “This will help her sleep.”

Cadolino, a resident of Country Meadows, has spent nearly 30 years teaching the method to parents and caregivers in New York.

Now 58, Cadolino moved to Lakewood Ranch four years ago, but began spreading the word about Nurturing Touch two years ago after learning Manatee County had an opioid crisis that was putting children into foster care.

“It really struck me,” she said, noting touch therapy can help guardians bond with foster children. “Not only are these children left without a parent, now they’re in foster care. It got my passion going again.”

Foster parents Tim and Heather Pye, of Bradenton, have four children of their own and a foster child.

“Being foster parents, we don’t come equipped with the ability to breastfeed or those soothing capabilities,” Tim Pye said.

“Using what’s available to us has been helpful. The tiny babies we get will be on formula and these massages help with digestion.

We think it’s really beneficial for people in our position.”

They’ve used Nurturing Touch therapy on their own children and said it has helped them relax and even helped their 5-year-old daughter Madeline with headaches.

her mother, Concetta Sharkey, volunteered with special needs children, doing movement therapy with them.

“I saw how the babies responded to it,” Cadolino said.

In 1987, Cadolino said her newborn, Kyle, was a fussy baby. One day while Cadolino was exercising to a Jane Fonda workout video, the video ended and information followed about a European woman who taught baby massage.

“She demonstrated strokes on a baby’s stomach, belly and legs,” Cadolino said. “I just followed along. (Kyle) seemed to really enjoy it.

“A lot of light bulbs went on — wow, the power of touch,” she said. “I got to see the benefits with my son. He was looking at me more, more interaction. He was calmer. I felt empowered. I couldn’t wait to learn more about it.”

Cadolino went to massage school, graduating when Kyle was 2. She added pediatric training and became certified to teach. At Stoney Brook University Hospital in New York, she implemented programs for healthy babies and premature, medically challenged children.

Florida Turkey Trot begins its run Nathan Benderson Park’s first Thanksgiving Day event draws thousands.

hen it came to the first Florida Turkey Trot at Nathan Benderson Park on Thanksgiving morning, organizers almost had to go for a run themselves — to find more pumpkin pie.

“We thought like 500 to 1,000 runners would sign up,” said Parks Robinson, the general manager of Fit2Run, which organized the race. “We had no idea there would be this many people interested.”

The race, which benefited park manager Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, attracted more than 2,000 entrants to the Thanksgiving morning 5K. Entrants also were asked to make a food donation for the All Faiths Food Bank.

When runners finished the 5K run, walk and youth events, they were given treats such as pumpkin pie or cinnamon rolls and beverages, which for the adults included beer and mimosas.

London’s Dana Shockman flew to the area to enjoy Thanksgiving with her parents, Lakewood Ranch’s Bill and Fran Magness.

All three ran in the Florida Turkey Trot.

Elks Lodge host grand opening While a packed house celebrated the official grand opening of Lakewood Ranch Elks Lodge No. 2855’s new building, Building Committee member Darrin Simone said they were celebrating something even more impressive.

“The best thing about all of this is the membership’s growth,” Simone said. “This is why we started the push for a new building six years ago. We had about 300 members then.

Now we have 972.”

Building Committee member Randy Volkhart was asked what he thought the new lodge’s best asset would be.

“That’s easy,” Volkhart said.

“We can put more numbers in here, and that means there are more good things we can do for the community. Our long-term goal is to have bigger events.

It’s really gratifying on a day like today to see this parking lot full.”

In June 2014, the Building Committee was formed with the idea of building a new lodge on Lena Road for about $1 million. The 6,800-square-foot lodge eventually cost $2 million.

When a deputy arrived, he was told by the woman she always keeps her keys in the ignition when she shops. She said she believed she had locked the door when she left her car, but can’t remember for sure. The Sheriff’s Office has found a witness and video surveillance and is investigating.

THE STARS WERE IN HIS EYES 7000 block of 44th Avenue East, Bradenton Information only: A Sheriff’s Office deputy found a man sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of a park that was closed and had a posted sign to that effect. When the man opened his car window, the deputy could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. The deputy asked the man why he was at the park and he said he had come to look at the stars.

The deputy told the man since he was sitting in the car, he couldn’t possibly see the stars. Then he told the man it also was cloudy, so not conducive to star gazing.

The deputy then asked the man where he was keeping his marijuana. The man said, “It’s in the back seat.” The deputy located a glass Mason jar containing what appeared to be marijuana. The jar was seized and put into Property and Evidence for destruction. The

GUN CLEANER SAYS ‘MY BAD’ 8200 block of 60th Street Circle East, Sarasota Firearm accident: A man was attempting to clean his newly purchased CZ semi-automatic pistol when the gun accidentally fired. The man said the firearm must have a defect because he said he didn’t have his hand near the trigger. A deputy found firearm cleaning supplies in front of the man. The bullet went through the eastern wall of the man’s apartment and into the next apartment. That apartment was vacant. Bullet holes were found through two walls, consistent with the man’s story. Property management verified the people in the next apartment over were not home.

After a check on the firearm, a deputy was told by the man he had accidentally discharged a firearm in the past, also due to a faulty firearm. Photographs were taken of the incident. The discharged casing was put into Property and Evidence.

TURKEY TALK TURNS TESTY 3900 block of 57th Drive East, Bradenton Domestic disturbance: Deputies responded after reports of a domestic disturbance. A married couple indicated they had a verbal altercation concerning how the Thanksgiving meal was prepared. Both parties said the dispute did not become physical.

The couple agreed to discuss their issues in a calm manner and to avoid further arguments.

C

hase Maasdorp’s priority when he stepped on the Auburn University campus in August was to be a student.

The Lakewood Ranch resident and The Out-of-Door Academy graduate had no athletic scholarship and no spot on the Tigers’ basketball team. He chose Auburn despite having scholarship offers from NCAA Division II and III schools, along with Division 1 programs Georgia Southern and Arkansas State.

Auburn’s engineering program made the school his perfect choice, but he did still dream of playing major college basketball.

He also knew the Tigers earned a trip to the Sweet 16 in last year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

When Auburn coach Bruce Pearl announced open tryouts in October, the 6-foot, 165 pound Maasdorp had already been training for two months, hitting the recreational center courts for four hours every day after class, keeping his game sharp.

He was ready for the tryouts.

“They started at 6:30 a.m. and went for 90 minutes,” Maasdorp said. “There were 20 people there.

We warmed up and went through basic drills, just so coaches could see what they were working with.

Then we played three-on-three and five-on-five. That was Stage One. I played well in the five on five, and I think that is what helped me advance to Stage Two. “It was cut from 20 people down to three, and the coaches said they were going to pick two of the three to make it. Stage two, they had us practice with the real team for 10 days. That means scrimmages, film, everything.”

Maasdorp played as hard as he could for those 10 days. He also got advice from junior guard Will Macoy, a former walk-on himself, after the first stage. Macoy told Maasdorp to do the little things to set himself apart: Show up first, leave last and out-hustle everyone. Maasdorp said Macoy “helped me more than he knows.”

Going into the process, Maasdorp said doubts crept into his mind, because no one knows if they can hang with Division 1 players. As the process went on, Maasdorp realized he could hang.

When Pearl approached Maasdorp after the second stage’s final practice, what he said still took Maasdorp aback.

“He told me, ‘We are going to bring you on, we believe you can help us on the scout team right now,’” Maasdorp said. “For him to say I would be going against guys like Jared Harper (a SecondTeam, All-SEC junior guard) every day, there are no words to explain how excited I was. Just putting that jersey on is unreal.”

Auburn, partly as an extension of the No. 3 he wore at ODA, and partly to honor Larry Bird. He is running the point on the Tigers’ scout team, but he has also seen action in three of the 5-1 Tigers’ games this season. Maasdorp said his hands were sweating at the check-in table before his first regular season action Nov. 6 against South Alabama, but after his first dribble he settled into the game. He missed his only shot of the season in that game, but he nabbed a rebound Nov. 9 against then-25th ranked Washington and got a steal Nov. 14 against Mississippi College.

Maasdorp said his goal is to gain muscle mass throughout the next two years, getting on par with SEC-caliber guards. After that, Maasdorp said, his goal is to be a real contributor as a junior and senior, whether that means playing five minutes a night or 20 minutes a night.

“I do not want to stay stagnant,” Maasdorp said. “I think I can be a part of the eight or nine man rotation he (Pearl) likes to use. I want to contribute every game. I want to be subbed in when it matters.”

Maasdorp is a lot closer to that goal now than he was in August.

He is no longer just a student. He is a student-athlete.

Lakewood Ranch rower chose water over ice I

f you follow rowing, you understand most rowers started in a different sport at a young age before finding their stroke on the water.

Lakewood Ranch High senior and Sarasota Crew rower Ava Vandroff did, too. Her path to signing with the University of Louisville, as she did Nov. 14, was different than most.

Vandroff tried several sports as a youngster — basketball and soccer — but her favorite sport, the one she spent seven years of her life perfecting, starting in first grade, was figure skating.

Figure skating?

Yes, Vandroff went from the most graceful of human activities to rowing, one of the most demanding, punishing sports there is. She started in eighth grade, after trying it at a Crew summer camp. Vandroff said she sometimes leaves rowing practice with bloody hands, and her palms and fingers are home to numerous scars.

“She got in my car after her first practice, and she was filthy, smelly and dirty,” said Beth Vandroff, Ava’s mother.

There was no switch that flipped in Vandroff’s mind when she left figure skating to focus on rowing full time. She did them simultaneously in eighth grade, but that was it.

Vandroff said she still misses the ice, but she figured out as a

freshman that her skating career was plateauing, and her rowing career was just then taking off, and more likely to earn her a scholarship.

It was also tough on her parents, because figure skating practice was in Ellenton before school, and rowing practice was in Osprey after school. She had to pick one, and Beth Vandroff said he believes her daughter found her comfort zone with rowing. Ava has never been the kind of girl to obsess over

makeup, Beth said, and she joked that while Ava was a good technical figure skater, she was never as graceful as other girls.

I still could not believe it. Can you imagine Michelle Kwan getting in an eight-person scull and grinding away? What about Nancy Kerrigan, or Tonya Harding? Actually, Tonya Harding seems fit for rowing’s brutality, but the others? I cannot.

“The first time I tried it, I was like, ‘What is this big oar? There are seats in the boat? How does

this work?’” Vandroff said. “But I loved it. It just feels good (to row). I cannot explain it.

“Every rower has quitting thoughts, usually after a tough practice, but I cannot quit it.

Even though it is exhausting, it is worth it in the end. Crew is a special sport.”

Her rowing path was not without waves. Ava said her first singles race saw her flip her boat three times in five minutes.

She gained 20 pounds of muscle from rowing and never lost it.

She was not turned off by the physical nature of the sport, she said, for figure skating requires more strength than people think, especially in the legs. She has had some wild experiences too, like her boat running into a gaggle of geese in July at the 2018 Club National Championships in Camden, N.J. Her biggest challenge was size.

Vandroff is 5-foot-1, and most collegiate rowers are at least 5-foot-10. To earn a scholarship, Vandroff spent her senior year with the Crew as a coxswain, using her voice to lead her boat instead of her oars. This versatility, leadership and success — Vandroff helped her Penn Athletic Club summer team to a bronze in the U19 women’s 8+ at those club championships, the only Penn AC boat to medal or even make the finals of a race — led to Louisville offering a spot.

Hopefully she will find smooth sailing at the collegiate level. If not, Vandroff is rugged enough to handle whatever is thrown at her, and she will do it with the elegance she learned on the ice.

The Lakewood Ranch Seafood and Music Festival appeared to have a successful first run Nov. 24-25 at Main Street at Lakewood Ranch.

Jim and Chris Zuehlke just returned home to Lakewood Ranch from Chicago, and they were happy to find a new festival in the area.

Lakewood Ranch’s Chris and Jim Zuehlke are snowbirds from Chicago who were happy to attend a nice, warm seafood festival in Lakewood Ranch.

“It’s miserable back in Chicago right now,” said Jim Zuehlke, who was enjoying a beer, some fried seafood and the live music. “I’m glad to be here.”

In addition to eight live bands, seafood specialties and adult beverages, people who attended enjoyed the many crafts and arts booths.

Students salute veterans

S

eventh-grader Sophia Swim wanted to do something special for her grandfather William Koons during a Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 9 at Braden River Middle School.

The school’s students had prepared large mosaic tiles featuring the names of veterans. Swim made sure her grandfather’s name was included.

“It’s a very special service,” Koons said after he saw his name on the tile.

“When I was in Vietnam, we didn’t get any respect. All of these kids did such a great job ... it means a lot. It was a cool surprise.”

Others veterans, who were related to students or teachers, had their names included as well. The school has had a Veterans Day ceremony for 18 years.

Seventh-grader Braxton Watson beamed as his uncle, Gordon Carter, was honored for his service.

“I’m happy he came,” Watson said. “I love him.”

Carter was grateful.

“It’s a lot different than the Vietnam era now,” Carter said. “Things have changed for the better.”

The school’s choir sang in honor of the veterans while students read patriotic poems. Following the ceremony, the veterans were invited to a complimentary brunch.

line Odom and her husband, Joe Odom, along with two of their daughters, 2-year-old Luna and 4-week-old Bia, watched as daughter Stella’s acting career bloomed in front of their eyes.

Stella, who is 5, played a flower Nov. 15 in the classic “Three Little Pigs” performed by the pre-kindergarten class at Tara Elementary School.

The Odoms said they loved Stella’s small part.

“This was super cute,” Aline Odom said.

Rachel Della-Donna’s class performed the story because she had been teaching them about different materials, such as straw, sticks and bricks.
